(Civil War: Front Line#4 (fb) - BTS / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z hardcover#14: Anti-Registration Underground (fb) - BTS) - Following the Stamford disaster, where hundreds had perished during a battle between New Warriors and four Raft escapees, Iron Man (Tony Stark), Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) and others worked with US officials to develop the Superhuman Registration Act (SHRA), outlawing any crimefighting activities by unregistered super heroes. 

    Vigilante Typeface, although his identity was already known, resolved to fight a perceived assault on freedom, and he organized an Anti-Registration Underground, beginning with ex-government operative Battlestar and anti-terrorist Solo, to support super heroes who continued fighting crime without SHRA approval. Their ranks were soon supplemented by mystic-armored Freeware; bodysuit-enhanced Green Guardswoman; Masked Rose, leader of super-team T,J,A.W. (Truth, Justice, and the American Way), empowered by accidental mutant blood exposure; exoskeleton-empowered Network; and cyborg Skybolt. Via a covert interview with Alternative reporter Sally Floyd, ARU members publicized their perspective, and several other anti-registration heroes joined, including Basic Black.

(Civil War: Front Line#4) - Basic Black was present with the ARU when S.H.I.E.L.D. raided the ARU's safehouse and arrested most of its members.

    As the ARU members debated whether to seek and join Captain America (Steve Rogers)'s Secret Avengers, a better organized and equipped anti-SHRA unit, or to remain independent, armored S.H.I.E.L.D. Cape-Killers, accompanied by Iron Man, Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers), Wonder Man (Simon Williams) and at least ten unidentified flying heroes, raided the base. Caught by surprise, few ARU members managed to effectively fight back against their more powerful and organized opponents. Although S.H.I.E.L.D. captured over 40 members, the Harbormaster, the Awe-Striker, Canasta, Dahntu, the Green Guardswoman, and the Tosser evaded capture, as did the Masked Rose, who had been absent seeking new recruits. 

(Civil War: Front Line#5/2) - ARU prisoners, such as Typeface, were seen being sent to the Prison 42.

(Civil War#6 - BTS) - The Secret Avengers and the Superhuman Registration Act resistance arrived at Prison 42 to free the prisoners.

(Civil War#7 / Amazing Spider-Man I#538 / Civil War: Front Line#10-11 - BTS) - The Secret Avengers penetrated Prison 42, freeing many prisoners. When the combined anti-registration forces were confronted by Iron Man's pro-registration forces, Secret Avenger Cloak (Tyrone Johnson) teleported both groups to Manhattan. Freed ARU prisoners took part in the battle between the pro and anti-registration heroes, spanning from the Negative Zone prison to the streets of New York. In the ensuing battle, which caused severe damage, the Thunderbolts' Venom (Mac Gargan) apparently killed Typeface. Other fatalities may also have occurred. Following Captain America's surrender to forestall further civilian risk, Battlestar and possibly others avoided recapture.

    The government offered amnesty in return for registration. Although Gladiatrix rejected the offer, Network registered under the 50 States Initiative, while Solo also registered but pursued independent interests. Presumably additional ARU members followed Gladiatrix's example, others followed Network's or Solo's, and still more remained at large.

   During the production of the Civil War: Battle Damage Report (2007) writer Paul Jenkins provided Ronald with authorization to provide identities, real names for the various background Anti-Registration Underground characters, and to flesh them out as much as he wanted. Ronald provided identities and real names for the Anti-Registration Underground entry in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z hardcover#14 (2010). There wasn't room to provide much more than that in that entry. However, Ronald had backgrounds and histories in mind for these characters when he provided their names.

HISTORY: One Halloween, Bernard Van Buren and other members of his church took several of their congregation's children -- including Van Buren's niece Pam -- "trick-or-treating" and, upon returning to Our Lady of Saints Church, discovered that an unidentified party or parties on the church's "trick-or-treat" route had placed tiny fragments of a metallic/ceramic substance. The head of the congregation, Father Chris Lyons, summoned the police to investigate, but Van Buren impulsively absconded some of the fragments that Pam had collected and took them home. He spent days experimenting with the fragments, ultimately determining that the fragments, when placed with certain proximities of each other, created a pattern of unidentified energies. Van Buren sewed the fragments into the fabric of a jumpsuit, which, when he donned it, imbued him with superhuman abilities, prompting him to become active as a costumed adventurer, or "super-hero," Warbug.

    Weeks after starting his adventuring activities, Warbug, wearing conventional clothes over his jumpsuit, was dining at a Burger Trough fast food restaurant when the building was struck with an energy blast from an unidentified superhuman (who was presumably battling another one). Warbug instinctively moved to prevent the building's roof from caving in, only to be unexpectedly pulled years into the future era of 2051 in Reality-928 (resulting in the collapse of the building and the deaths of all within) where internal conflict within the antimatter universe called the Negative Zone -- an all-out attack by the Z'Nox race upon Stygorr, Vigil of Vontsalvant, and other Zone rulers -- had overflowed into the Earth dimension, unleashing extradimensional/extratemporal forces such as those which had drawn Warbug forward in time. The side-effects of this crisis, subsequently referred to as "the Negative Zone Meltdown," were being fought by several superhumans of the era, including the contemporary X-Men, led by the mysterious Del Ruiz. Appearing in the team's midst, Warbug instinctively joined their efforts, but at the precise moment that the crisis was resolved, the asteroid 99942 Apophis struck Earth's atmosphere, creating a chain reaction which rendered earthly time travel unfeasible for the next several years, preventing Warbug from returning to his home era and thus trapping him in Reality-928. Although Warbug was a baseline human, not a mutant, Del Ruiz's X-Men, impressed by his performance during the crisis, welcomed him into their ranks. At some point during his X-Men membership, Warbug married an unidentified woman, with whom he conceived four children.

    In July of 2061, over ten years after his arrival in Reality-928, during the X-Men's battle with a swarm of renegade artificial life-forms called Wave Spiders, the traveling ice-mass known as Halley's Comet entered Earth's solar system, disrupting the effects that Asteroid 99942 Apophis had exercised over Earth's atmosphere and rendering Warbug's extratemporal presence detectable by several Chronometrodes, bizarre entities that policed so-called "space-time manipulation," who judged Warbug's "intrusive" presence in Reality-928 to be unacceptable. Even as the Chronometrodes joined the Wave Spiders in attacking Warbug and the X-Men, however, a pair of gargantuan Time Eaters, trans-temporal beings engaged in battle for unfathomable reasons, briefly emerged into Reality-928. The sudden combination of variant temporal forces returned Warbug to his home era, Reality-616, at the precise second of his departure, although he physically remained over ten chronological years older. Again finding himself in the damaged Burger Trough, he successfully delayed its collapse long enough for the occupants to evacuate, saving dozens of lives. However, Warbug realized that his actions had "altered" the history that had resulted in Reality-928, meaning that it had ceased to be an accessible potential future from his contemporary perspective, and he thus could not return to it, a conclusion confirmed by consultations with the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and Doctor Strange. Heartbroken by the loss of his family and friends, Warbug could only resolve to survive until 2051, when he might at least meet an alternate reality version of the woman who had been his wife and perhaps again find happiness.

    Following the passage of the Superhuman Registration Act (SHRA), Warbug, despite his period of inactivity, was initially prepared to register but refused when he learned that, in doing so, he ran the risk of the U.S. government confiscating his super-powered costume and removing any chance, however remote, of potential time travel to the era of his wife, children, and X-Men teammates. He eventually joined Typeface's Anti-Registration Underground and was present when SHIELD raided the ARU's safehouse and arrested most of its members, including himself. He dutifully registered and was released without incident, retaining his costume, to continue his years-long wait for the future from which he had been torn.

ABILITIES/ACCESSORIES: Warbug's costume grants him superhuman strength (lifting at least 10 tons), speed, and durability; even after he has removed his costume, he retains these abilities for roughly seven minutes. His costume's "antenna" can fire rays of mystical energy, whose effects he can determine by greater than customary will power. Warbug is proficient in several fighting techniques, some which have not yet been developed in his contemporary existence.
