The Shi’ar are an avian (bird-like) humanoid race with an imperial monarchy that spans many star systems, the throneworld being Chandilar, with newly conquered planets often forced to submit to Shi’ar rule. The Shi’ar have had various wars with the Kree. Indeed, the Kree fell under the rule of the Shi’ar after the decimation of the Kree people in the wake of the Nega-bomb, detonated during the Avengers’ incursion of Operation Galactic Storm. Two rivals for the Shi’ar throne are the sisters Lilandra and Deathbird. Lilandra has been romantically involved with Prof. Charles Xavier, with the X-Men and Shi’ar meeting sometimes as allies or enemies. The Shi’ar have advanced and powerful interstellar spacecraft, and use stargates to cross huge distances within the empire.
The Shi’ar throne has its will enacted and enforced by the Imperial Guard (sometimes called Superguardians), with the purple-skinned Gladiator as one of its most formidable members. The Imperial Guard is comprised of many super-powered individuals, mostly representatives from planets under Shi’ar rule.
The Shi’ar have an intense fear of the Phoenix force and seek to destroy it. The Shi’ar have also utilized the Death Squad to eliminate many Grey family members.
The Shi’ar are, at times, opposed by the Starjammers, who are made up of rebels and pirates, and captained by Corsair (Christopher Summers), father of the X-Men Cyclops, Havok and Vulcan.
Other notable Shi’ar
include Deathcry (former Avenger) and Cerise (former Excalibur member).
