EBON
Real Name: Unrevealed
Identity/Class: Extraterrestrial (speculated to be an Eclipsian by Recorder#127, who also suspected her to be augmented; see comments)
Grekan Yaer called her a Shi'ar, but this may have just referred to her being a force for the Shi'ar Empire
Occupation: Warrior; Imperial Guardsman
Group Membership: Imperial Guard (specifically Arach, Crusher, Dragoon, Warstar
34), Shi'ar Empire,
Affiliations: Shi'ar Metal Wing Cadre, Grekan Yaer;
at least temporarily Groot, Recorder 127, Roamer, Rocket (Raccoon);
she apparently revered and likely worshipped Sharra and Kythri
Enemies: Badoon race (notably Commander Droook), Groot, Odus Hanxchamp, Rocket Raccoon, Sharnor the Accuser, Una-Ren, Universal Church of Truth (Black Knights, Cardinals (notably Navorth), Crusaders, Zania Orbal);
at least formerly Gamora, Recorder 127, Roamer;
formerly Grekan Yaer
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
formerly the Conscience of Sharra, a Shi'ar Strikebird Class warcruiser;
formerly Adjufara City, planet Adjufar
First Appearance: Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy (2017)
Powers/Abilities: A tall, young, athletic and lithe woman, Ebon is smart, intelligent and ambitious
Her primary super-power is dark
matter manipulation/projection, including forming shields and
projecting blasts which typically imparted significant kinetic
force/impact, capable of denting the Plandanium armor of a Galadorian
Spaceknight or shearing off the armored casing of a Xandarian cruiser.
Her shields could absorb many forms of energy and could also be used to
physically batter others via flying into them at great speed.
She shuddered as she summoned her dark matter, although she could form multiple shields in short order.
Even at a young age and as a new
recruit into the Imperial Guard, Ebon was an experienced combatant,
both hand-to-hand and in the use of her powers. She also used her
flight implant to boost the force of her efforts.
She was able to physically engage and hold her own against Gamora, who is reputedly "the most dangerous woman in the galaxy."
She is covered from head to foot
in a jet-black form-fitting bodysuit with delicate silver tracery of
inlaid circuits on both her skin and her suit. She wore at her throat a
silver broche in the form of the inverted triangular icon of the
Imperial Guard
She possessed standard issue
Imperial Guard flight implant, enabling her to fly at unspecified
speeds. Ebon was considered the fastest of her teammates, all of whom
were more experienced than she was.
Her optical implants could be keyed to feed directly into
her data device so that she could scan a large crowd, and the device
would flag a sought after individual with an almost one hundred
percentile certainty.
She carried a tablet able to scan
and provide data about local situations as well as accessing extensive
databases.
Height: Unrevealed (approximately 5'8" - 5'10")

History:
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter 30: "Which Contains a Certain Amount of Disagreeable
Violence" (fb) - BTS) - The highly knowledgeable considered that Ebon appeared to be an augmented Eclipsian.
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy chapter 25: "Meanwhile (Three hours later on Adjufar)" (fb) - BTS) - A relatively new recruit and junior guardsman in the Imperial Guard, Ebon regularly monitored the Shi'ar watch lists.
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy chapter 25 (fb) - BTS) - Ebon was part of an Imperial Guard squad -- led by Crusher and including Dragoon and Warstar
34 -- assigned
to the freeport of Adjufara City, the capital of the nonaligned world
Adjufar. Their mission was to locate and close down any individual or
operative buying, selling or moving Blisser, a new narco-form that
washed the user with a sense of well-being but was addictive and often
lethal; when mixed with other psychoactive ingredients, it could
trigger murderous rages.
As she surveyed the city, she was
was followed from some distance by four Shi'ar soldiers of the Metal
Wing Cadre. While Ebon believed that they should have gone in
undercover, Crusher insisted that they go in thusly in a show of
strength and authority.
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy
chapter 25) - Appreciating that it was not her place to complain nor
her right to request more glamorous duties, on her sixth fruitless day,
Ebon nonetheless silently wrinkled her nose with displeasure at what
she perceived to be a cruddy assignment to Adjufar City. In a
ten-second period in the souk (marketplace), Ebon identified forty-two
different species, many of whom would have been at war with each other
in another setting but were using its sleazy neutrality to get their
business done, no questions asked; however, a simmering undercurrent of
tension persisted.
As she traversed the souk, noting its many sights,
sounds and odors, she appreciated the sidelong glances of those
pretending not to notice her. As they were not part of the reason she
was stationed there, Ebon turned a blind eye to the endless criminal
dealings -- cheating, swindling, racketeering, illegal trade in weapons
and prohibited substances, and even cutpurses -- she saw around her.
She considered that -- while Crusher had begun to suggest that either
Adjufar was not a supply center of Blisser or that his team was doing a
bad job -- her wearing of the Imperial Guard's symbol and her being
followed by Metal Wing Cadre soldiers hindered her chances of
discovering anything.
After Crusher contacted her for a report of her lack
of findings, he summoned her back to the Juva Parade to regroup.
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy
chapter 25 / Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy chapter 27: "Retail Therapy") - As Ebon
turned to beckon the troopers, however, she briefly spotted a pair --
Rocket Raccoon and Groot -- who struck her as familiar from the Shi'ar
watch list. She punched their descriptions into her tablet.
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy
chapter 25) - After she met up with her teammates, Ebon resisted
the urge to respond to Crusher's notation that their failure of results
was not going to look good in his report. When Crusher noted an amused
look on her face and demanded an explanation, her tablet beeped with
results on her search, and she instead reported that she had found
something, "Not what we were looking for, but something we probably shouldn't ignore."
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy
chapter 27: "Retail Therapy" - BTS) - As Rocket and Groot visited Pip's
Palace, Pip informed them of an alert that the Shi'ar had identified
them and were on the way. Wishing them luck, he instructed them to get
out of his store.
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy
chapter 28: "Souk and Destroy") - Sharing the details of Rocket and
Groot's recent infractions on Xarth Three and Xandar and of their
associate with a Rigellian Recorder unit that contained data of
perceived value to the Shi'ar Empire, Ebon advised the reluctant
Crusher that they needed to investigate the situation. Support from the
more experienced Dragoon convinced Crusher, and he asked and accepted
Ebon's recommendation for airborne sweep surveillance. Crusher sent Ebon
and Dragoon out for surveillance, with himself and Warstar at the ready
to lead the Metal Wings.
After she and Dragoon split up, Ebon used her
optical implants, which she had keyed to feed directly into her data
device, to scan the crowd.
As Rocket and Groot headed back to their ship, Groot spotted Ebon above and pulled Rocket under an awning.
(Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy
chapter 28 - BTS) - Returning to their ship, Rocket and Groot learned
that Gamora and the Recorder had gone out for a drink, and so they went
out to retrieve them.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter 30: "Which Contains a Certain Amount of Disagreeable
Violence" (fb) - BTS) - Detecting the energies of Roamer, renegade
Galadorian Spaceknight Roamer who had been transported there by his
Interpolation Inserter with the goal of recovering Recorder#127 for
his then-employers, Timely, Incorporated on Alpha Centauri, Ebon
traveled to Pandubundy's Bar & Tech on Kefu Square.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter
30) - Arriving at Pandubundy's, in which Roamer was about to battle the
Zen-Whoberian and Guardian of the Galaxy Gamora to forcibly take
Recorder 127, Ebon ordered both Roamer and Gamora to drop their
weapons or she would drop them instead. She also contacted Crusher and
requested immediate back-up. When Roamer told her that the matter was
none of her affair and ordered her (and Gamora) to get out of his way,
Ebon replied that he had "said the magic words" as she shuddered and
projected a globular beam of dark matter from her right hand. The blast
smashed Roamer back into a wall, but he returned fire with his Spartoi
blaster. Shuddering again, Ebon formed a thin disk-shield of dark
matter over her crossed-arms, which soaked up the blasts.
As Ebon dove forward and levitated into the air,
Gamora leapt into her path and struck with both of her blades, but Ebon
blocked each with a small dark matter shield. Repeatedly striking with
her blades to keep Ebon's arms occupied forming new shields, Gamora
used an upward scissor kick to smash Ebon back to the ground. Ebon
rolled and came back up, trembling as she fired a dark, globular beam,
but Gamora dodged and then forward-rolled and clamped Ebon's neck
between her thighs. Strangled, Ebon dropped to the ground, but as
Gamora tried to stab her, she was able to form a disk of dark matter to
drive the tip aside. Arching up and boosting herself with her flight
implant, Ebon drove Gamora off of her.
Both women returned to their feet, and Gamora's
swift strikes were parried by Ebon's dark matter disks. After multiple
such strikes, Ebon kicked Gamora's shoulder back, but Gamora fiercely
struck back, eventually getting past Ebon's defenses and kicking her in
the ribs. Gasping, Ebon rolled to avoid the subsequent sword blow, but
Gamora then delivered a punch to the side of her face, knocking her
back through a nearby table and stairs and leaving her dazed.
As Gamora stepped forward and raised her sword, the
Recorder urged her not to kill Ebon and earn a Shi'ar death warrant and
then warned her of Roamer's impending assault. Although Gamora
deflected the first three blasts, a fourth cut a massive hole through
her abdomen, dropping her. As Roamer prepared to to decapitate the
Recorder to take only his head for ease of transport, Ebon struck
Roamer in the face with a dark matter blast and urged the Recorder to
flee, assuring him that her support staff was moving in and would look
after him.
His helmet dented from Ebon's blast, the returning
Roamer fired his fusion beamer, the blasts from most of which Ebon
absorbed with dark matter disks. She further formed disks to cover the
Recorder's flight, after which Roamer blasted her out of the back of
Pandubundy's into a market stall, leaving Ebon unconscious. The
recently-arrived Imperial Guard -- Crusher and Warstar-34, alongside 16 battletroopers of the Metal Wing cadre -- then engaged Roamer.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter
Thirty-One: Dead or Alive) - In the ensuing chaos, Groot
injured Crusher and then picked up the healing Gamora, and they,
Rocket, and the Recorder fled
back to the Xandarian cruiser. As the craft initially refused to
depart, insisting that they wait for the Nova Grekan Yaer, the
recovered Ebon flew up over the docks and fired a beam of dark matter
at the cruiser's central processing module, attempting to disable it.
The beam sheared through the armored outer casing, burned through eight
memory blocks, and fused the craft's internal registry. She then
demanded that those within the ship come out with their hands up.
Detecting the jeopardy, the ship suddenly launched
to protect its crew, sending Ebon spinning away in the backwash. The
ship hit hyperspatial jump before the Imperial Guard could regroup.
The group aboard the cruiser headed to Alpha Centauri and Timely Inc. headquarters.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter
Thirty-Six: Meanwhile (3,995 floors higher up) (fb) - BTS) -
Sub-Praetor Arach was appointed replace the injured Crusher, and she
led Dragoon, Ebon and Warstar 34 aboard the Conscience of Sharra, a Shi'ar Strikebird Class warcruiser that traveled to Alpha Centauri and Timely Inc. headquarters in pursuit of the fugitives who had escaped them on Adjufar.
Three minutes before the main story, someone from
the Conscience of Sharra hailed Timely's main communications division,
notified them of their approach and noted that they were operating
under the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. Thereafter, they dropped their
cloaking field.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter
36 - BTS) - Timely Inc. head of corporate security Xorb Xorbux
deactivated the holo-images on the window to show Senior Vice Executive
President (Special Projects) Odus Hanxchamp that there was a Shi'ar war
cruiser adjacent to the building.
Xorbux informed Hanxchamp that the Imperial Guard
wanted to take a meeting with him. Hanxchamp initially insisted that
they contact the Alpha Centauri embassy and go through the appropriate
channels, but Xorbux explained that, under the Intergalactic
Non-Aggression Pact, they were permitted to intervene directly. Xorbux
further noted his concern that the Shi'ar were investigating Project
616 -- in which Hanxchamp's division was trying to accumulate all
knowledge of the universe with the aid of various Recorders to be able
to alter reality -- and suggested they handle things discretely.
Hanxchamp summoned his Senior Special Projects executive board and
instructed Xorbux to tell the Shi'ar that he wold take their meeting in
30 minutes.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter 36) - Transporting into the room alongside Arach, Dragoon and Warstar 34, Ebon surprised Hanxchamp by saying, "Tell you what? How about now instead?"
She then introduced herself and her associates, noting that Arach had
taken command after the previous commander, Crusher, was injured in the
line of duty on Adjufar, and that nine Metal Wing warriors died as well.
Hanxchamp expressed his sympathies and then offered them food and drink
in an effort to diffuse the tension. After Dragoon informed him that
they did not drink on duty, he poured himself some Spartoi liquor and
then asked how he could help them.
Ebon explained that they had tracked several
dangerous fugitives from Adjufar to Alpha Centauri; although they had lost their trace two
minutes after they entered airspace, predictive tracking had reported that
they were coming to this building. With Arach's approval, Ebon noted
that the fugitives were in the company of a Rigellian Recorder unit,
which they believed to be of consequence. She asked why the fugitives
would have brought the Recorder there.
Initially shocked to learn the Recorder might be in
his building as they had long been trying to recover it, Hanxchamp
replied that he had no idea why a Recorder unit would be important to
anyone except the Rigellians, but he assured the Imperial Guard that
his security forces would run a full search of the building and find a
Recorder if it was there. Warstar noted that they would prefer to
do the searching themselves, but Hanxchamp insisted that this was Alpha
Centauri jurisdiction and Timely Inc. property: They would get a
resolution stat, and he encouraged them to sit down and relax while he
had hospitality get some sandwiches and juice.
Arach agreed to let Timely security handle things initially, after which the Senior
Special Projects executive board -- Pama Harnon (secretly the Kree spy
Una Ren), Allandra Meramati (secretly the Universal Church of Truth's
Zania Orbal), Sledly Rarnak and Blint Wivvers -- then arrived.
Hanxchamp noted the Shi'ar concerns and told his board to welcome their
guests while he had Xorbux lead the investigation.
Away from the Imperial Guardsmen, Hanxchamp
instructed Xorbux to find the Recorder and get it to the Datacore, at
which point they would have no further worries.
Arach then had forty Shi'ar Metal Wing warriors transmat in, and she advised Hanxchamp, "Just to be sure we're on the same page."
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Thirty-Eight: Meanwhile (8,087 floors higher up))
- An
immense Nova Corps heavy cruiser arrived outside of Timely Inc., and
the hypervelocity boom shook the windows, causing Ebon to exclaim "Sharra and Kythri!"
After four Nova warriors shattered the window in the process of
entering, Ebon and the other Imperial Guardsmen assumed battle stances,
at which point the Nova Centurion/leader Grekan Yaer introduced himself
and his allies, and when Hanxchamp insisted there not be violence, Ebon
and her associates powered down along with the Nova Corpsmen, and the
Shi'ar warriors lowered their weapons.
After Yaer announced that they were also pursuing the fugitives
associated with the Recorder #127, he ultimately agreed to let the
Shi'ar take the Recorder, and the Xandarians would take the fugitives Gamora,
Groot, and Rocket.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Thirty-Nine: Project 616 - BTS) - Seeing the near infinite data
within, the Recorder realized he was needed to complete it. After
confirming the extent of Project 616, the Recorder asked Rocket to
destroy him, but Rocket refused to murder his friend.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Thirty-Nine - BTS / Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty: Danger in the Workplace) - Teleporting into the
boardroom from the nearby Pride of Pama, Sharnor the Accuser insisted
that the Recorder was hers (and the Kree's), after which Timely, Inc.
member Pama Harnon (actually named Una-Ren) revealed she had confirmed
the Recorder's presence to Sharnor.
The Badoon then arrived, and Commander Droook demanded the delivery of
the Recorder or they would obliterate the entire landmass on which the
building stood.
Consulting her tablet device, Ebon noted that scans
confirmed that a War Brotherhood battle-fleet had just appeared in low
orbit: Ten megadestroyers, batteries locked on this location and their
ships.
And then forty immense
Templeships of the Universal Church of Truth (UCT) arrived and
teleported in hosts of Crusaders, led by Cardinals, to assault the
facility and everyone in it.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-One: Truth or Dare) - Realizing that completing
Project 616 would allow its controller to eliminate all of the gathered
threats, Gruntgrill instructed Roamer to connect the Recorder to the
Datacore. The Recorder sought to convince Roamer to be the hero he was
meant to be.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There
- BTS) - Crusaders of the UCT transmatted to the surface and charged
into Timely Inc. Corporate HQ, with the Faith Cardinals at the
forefront, led by Cardinal Navorth, who deployed the Black Knights.
As the various forces battled in the upper floors,
Sharnor sent Una-Ren to find the Recorder, and Nova Centurion Grekan
Yaer pursued her. Ebon battled marauding Crusaders and Black Knights
alongside Dragoon until Arach sent Ebon, as the fastest, to pursue
Yaer. Ducking a Black Knight's swinging dagger and then punching the
Knight in the face, Ebon followed the order when Dragoon insisted she
go. Knocking another Black Knight out of her way with a burst of dark
matter, she zoomed into a corridor and then formed a dark matter shield
to absorb the blasts of a Badoon fire-team that fired their rifles at
her, after which she used the shield to send them tumbling as she flew
through them.
Yaer reached the elevator banks just after the door had closed on the
car carrying Una-Ren and Odus Hanxchamp, and they had headed down to
the Datacore. Tearing open the outer doors and preparing to dive into
the shaft in pursuit, Yaer bounced off a disk of dark matter created by
Ebon and landed back onto the carpet outside. When she noted that he
seemed to be in a hurry and raised her arm to unleash another blast,
Yaer cursed the Shi'ar as he got up, and he told Ebon that Hanxchamp
and Una-Ren were in the car, the destination of which he guided her to
figure out.
When they were attacked by Badoon War Brotherhood
Devastation cadre warriors, they turned together and blasted the Badoon
off their feet. Ebon proposed cooperation, Yaer agreed, and the
two shook hands and introduced themselves. Ebon told him, "Let's go guard the galaxy," after which he and Ebon jumped side-by-side into
the elevator shaft.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Three: One with Anything) - As the UCT forces arrived, Roamer battled Navorth while the Recorder was lowered into the Datacare. Groot tried to
pull the cage back up until he was stabbed in the chest by the UCT's Allandra
Meramati, whom Rocket then shot. Nonetheless, Groot fell forward, into
the Datacore.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Four: Watched) - As Ebon and Yaer arrived and futilely tried to contain the situation, the Recorder realized that his form could not
handle this level of knowledge and power, and Uatu the Watcher appeared and advised him to
depose the power to someone who could.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Five: Great Power, Great Responsibility) - The
Recorder deposed the power to Groot and then advised him to fix this
mess, after which Groot transported away all of those who had invaded
the Timely, Inc. building, including Ebon, Yaer and their associates. Groot then restored the damaged
building, restored all those slain in the recent conflict, and then not
only dispersed the Datacore but made it so that no one could ever
re-create it again (if anyone ever thought of trying to recreate the
datamap in pursuit of power, they would instantly forget how to do it).
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Six: Tails to Astonish) - The
Recorder summoned the arc fleets of Rigel to collect and repair him, to
download his data and reformat him, and to recover his dormant brethren
in the Core below, and he bade farewell to Gamora, Groot, Roamer, and Rocket.
Comments: Created by Dan Abnett.
In the Acknowledgments section, Dan thanked Stuart Moore, Jeff
Youngquist, Axel Alonso, Dan Buckley, Sarah Brunstad, and James Gunn
for their support in this project.
He also noted "fist-bumps to <the Appendix's own> Ronald Byrd for continuity-fu."
In the final portion of the last chapter, Tails to Astonish, the Recorder flashed forward, having recorded and now detailing
what happened to most of the participants of the Project 616 adventure
in the many years since its conclusion; all of these events occurred in the alternate Reality-17721; many of them may have also occurred in Reality-616, but that would have to be decided on a case by case basis.

- Ebon achieved the high rank of Sub-Praetor toward the end of her
career. This promotion was due in part to her strong collaborative work
with the Xandarian Grekan Yaer. Affirmative exercises were established
between the Guard and the Nova Corps, thanks to the friendship between
Ebon and Yaer. Because of them, the Shi'ar Empire and the Xandarians
moved forward in a new intent of mutual cooperation.
What is Dark Matter? Short answer: We don't know yet.
Check it out here.
Or, according to Wikipedia:
In astronomy, dark matter is an invisible and hypothetical form of matter that does not interact with light or other electromagnetic radiation. Dark matter is implied by gravitational effects that cannot be explained by general relativity unless more matter is present than can be observed. Such effects occur in the context of formation and evolution of galaxies, gravitational lensing, the observable universe's current structure, mass position in galactic collisions, the motion of galaxies within galaxy clusters, and cosmic microwave background anisotropies. Dark matter is thought to serve as gravitational scaffolding for cosmic structures. After
the Big Bang, dark matter clumped into blobs along narrow filaments
with superclusters of galaxies forming a cosmic web at scales on which
entire galaxies appear like tiny particles.
