History:

(Uncanny X-Men I#479 (fb) - BTS) - The first Imperial Guard was formed centuries ago to fight Rook'shir, possessor of the Phoenix force (also called the Phal'kon). Among its first members were Gladiator, Magic, Mentor, and Quasar.

(Uncanny X-Men I#479 (fb)) - The Guard apprehended Rook'shir, and Gladiator beheaded him.

(X-Men I#107) - Members of the Imperial Guard fought the X-Men (Banshee, Colossus, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Phoenix (Jean Grey), Storm, Wolverine) and Starjammers (Ch'od, Corsair, Cr+eee, Hepzibah, Raza) at the M'kraan Crystal, in order to stop them from rescuing Lilandra from D'ken and Davan Shakari. During the battle, Magic was knocked out by Storm's lightning. D'ken was rendered comatose and Lilandra took over as the new Majestrix. Members of the Guard in this mission: Astra, Electron, Fang, Gladiator, Hobgoblin, Impulse, Magic, Mentor, Midget, Nightside, Oracle, Quasar, Smasher, Starbolt, Tempest, and Titan.

(X-Men I#108) - The Guard lay unconscious as the battle resolved.

(X-Men I#109 (fb) - BTS) - The Guard was stopped by Lilandra from killing the X-Men. Later the Guard watched the X-Men return to Earth.

(Rom Annual#4) - In far space, Guard members Binder, Chakar, Kwill, and Voltor were killed by the maddened Spaceknight Pulsar. Former Shi'ar ally Dr. Tyreseus donned Pulsar's armor and, calling himself Liberator, began slaying Shi'ar ships. Members of the Guard were sent to investigate, and battled other Spaceknights, Rom, Scanner, Seeker, and Trapper. During the battle, Magic tried magically avoiding Trapper's nets, but the nets had been calibrated against the Dire Wraiths and her powers could not stop them. Trapper restrained her and threw her into Oracle. Gladiator ended up aiding the Spaceknights in destroying the Liberator. Guard members in this mission: Electron, Gladiator, Magic, Manta, Oracle, Tempest, and Warstar.

(X-Men: Spotlight on Starjammers#2) - At Deathbird's orders, a large group of the Guard attacked the Starjammers and Excalibur (Captain Britain (Brian Braddock), Lockheed, Meggan, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Phoenix (Rachel Summers), Widget) on Earth, but retreated when Deathbird was put at risk. During the battle, Nightside was overwhelmed by Cr+eee's alien family and accidentally cast her darkness over Magic, canceling out her spells. Both of them fell through Widget's extradimensional portal. Guard members who participated in this assault: Astra, Black Light, Blackthorn, Earthquake, Electron, Gladiator, Hobgoblin, Impulse, Magik, Mentor, Midget, Nightside, Oracle, Smasher, Starbolt, Tempest, Titan, and White Noise.

(Quasar#32) - Impulse, Magique, and Manta were sent to a moon of Saturn to retrieve the Nega-Bands from Captain Marvel's corpse, but found Atlas, Minerva, Quasar, and Starfox there. Magique cast an illusion that the entire Imperial Guard were attacking, distracting the foes. Magique manipulated the illusions as the others slowly figured out they were insubstantial, and kept herself invisible on the side. Minerva used her enhanced senses to track Magique, though, and knocked her out. The other two were also defeated.

(X-Men Legends I#2) - The Imperial Guard was summoned to the Blue Area of the Moon by Corsair and the Starjammers, and they helped return X-Treme (Adam-X) to Chandilar for judgment.

(JLA/Avengers#1) - The Imperial Guard fought Lobo. Members of the Guard in this mission: Astra, Fang, Electron, Flashfire, Hobgoblin, Hussar, Impulse, Magique, Manta, Mentor, Neutron, Nightside, Oracle, Scintilla, Smasher, Starbolt, Titan, Warstar.

(X-Men: Watchers on the Walls: Chapter 4: Exodus) - The Imperial Guard allied with the Diascar race, and pursued Chlorite refugees to Earth, with the intent of killing them. The X-Men (Professor X, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Lockheed) stood against the Guard (Smasher (Vrill Rokk), Manta, Blackthorn, N'rill'iree, Flashfire, Magique, Nightside). During the fight, Manta engulfed Wolverine in burning light, and later hit Jean Grey. Blackthorn animated corn to fight for him until Lockheed set him on fire, and Astra, who had been holding Shadowcat phased, had to rescue him. Magique used illusions to defeat Cyclops. Nightside engulfed some of the mutants in Darkforce until Wolverine slashed at her, pulling his blows. Smasher defeated Kitty before Nightcrawler stole his specs and Lockheed hit him with fire, but he managed to punch Rogue down. Before the fight could escalate further, Dr. Valerie Cooper arrived to break up the fight, having talked about the threat of the Chlorites with the Diascar, and the Imperial Guard and X-Men stood down.

(X-Men: Watchers on the Walls: Chapter 8: Exclosure) - The Diascar placed a forcefield over a mutant community in Brazil. When the X-Men investigated, the Imperial Guard attacked, making sure to keep the X-Men out of the enclosure. Smasher burst into the ship, throwing devices to contain some of the team. When Kitty Pryde tried phasing into a team member to hide, Astra unphased her and Blackthorn poisoned her with a thorn. Smasher realized that all those under the dome would be dead within days.

(X-Men: Watchers on the Walls: Chapter 15: Execution) - In India, Magique worked with Shadowcat, Storm, and a Sentinel to get a Chlorite in custody, then got mutants to safety.

(X-Men: Watchers on the Walls: Chapter 17: Extraterritorial) - The Imperial Guard helped the Sentinels secure Madripoor.

(X-Men: Watchers on the Walls: Chapter 23: Exeunt Omnes - BTS) - The X-Men found a way to send all Chlorites into a different dimension where they could survive. The Imperial Guard and the Diascar left peacefully.

(Uncanny X-Men I#485) - Members of the Guard stood guard at the wedding of Deathbird to Vulcan, D'ken acting as new emperor having ordered it. The X-Men (Darwin, Havok, Marvel Girl (Rachel Grey), Polaris, Warpath), Starjammers (Ch'od, Corsair, Cr+eee, Hepzibah, Raza), Korvus, Lilandra, and the armies of General Ka'ardum attacked, and the Guard fought against them. Magique briefly fought Hepzibah. Vulcan then assassinated D'ken.

(Uncanny X-Men I#486 - BTS) - Vulcan murdered Corsair and proclaimed himself emperor. Deathbird ordered the Guard to follow Vulcan's orders, and they were soon ordered to retreat. Guard members in this mission (and last): Earthquake, Electron, Gladiator, Magique, Manta, Mentor, Nightside, Starbolt, and Warstar.

(War of Kings#1) - Vulcan surveyed, with Gladiator, the assembled Imperial Guard. Mentor reported they were all battle ready and Vulcan announced his intentions to attack the Kree. They soon engaged in a massive battle with the Inhumans and Starjammers, successfully capturing Lilandra before retreating. Members of the Guard in this mission: Astra, Black Light, Earthquake, Electron, Fang, Flashfire, Gladiator, Hussar, Impulse, Magique, Manta, Neutron, Nightside, Plutonia, Schism, Scintilla, Shapeshifter, Smasher, Squorm, Starbolt, Titan, Voyager, Warstar, and White Noise.

(Guardians of the Galaxy II#14) - As Warlock battled Vulcan, the Imperial Guard (Fang, Mentor, Oracle, Scintilla) rushed to help, seeking Magique for aid when they realized Warlock wielded magic. They attacked, with Neutron and Hussar joining them, and Magique put Warlock in a glamour snare, but he easily dispelled it and painfully drained her glamours from her. Vulcan was furious with them when Warlock escaped, but Oracle sensed Magique had marked him with a witch-mark, with which they could track him. They followed to Knowhere, using Voyager to transport them, and found a battle breaking out between the Guardians of the Galaxy (Gamora, Jack Flag, Mantis, Martyr, Moondragon, Star-Lord, Warlock) and the Inhumans (Black Bolt, Crystal, Gorgon, Karnak).

(Guardians of the Galaxy II#15) – The Imperial Guard (Fang, Hussar, Magique, Mentor, Oracle, Scintilla, Voyager) landed on Knowhere, where the Inhumans and Guardians of the Galaxy were already battling. As Fang was hit by a mental blast from Cosmo the telepathic dog, Mentor ordered the Guard to kill Black Bolt. After Oracle knocked back Cosmo's telekinetic barrier, Black Bolt knocked them back with a small scream and the Inhumans teleported off-site through Lockjaw. Mentor ordered the Guard, with their Shi'ar operatives, to separate and find Warlock and the others, knowing Voyager's needed time to recuperate before seizing reinforcements. Intending to seize Knowhere for the Shi'ar, Mentor examined Knowhere's technology while Hussar kept him appraised of the battles with the Guardians. Magique led a group of soldiers, whose guns she ensorcelled to aim true for the witch-mark, after Warlock, who took on traits of his evil self the Magus, moved the witch-mark back to her body, and let her be killed by her own soldiers' guns. As Mentor prepared to teleport in reinforcements through Knowhere, a group of Guardians attacked him, and Rocket Raccoon leapt on his face, slashing it. As Drax violently defeated Fang, more Guardians arrived as backup. Hussar ordered Voyager to aid them in retreat, even as Mentor informed Rocket that Lilandra had been assassinated, a message he'd heard through intel-feed.

SECRET WARS III HAPPENED

(Guardians of the Galaxy V#1) - Aboard the Sanctuary, Starfox (badly scarred and in a hover-chair) assembled many heroes, including the Imperial Guard, the Starjammers, Adam Warlock, Wraith, Firelord, Cosmo, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Beta Ray Bill, Major Victory, Howard the Duck, Shi’ar Death Commandos, and Moondragon and Phyla-Vell (alternates), as he stood over the corpse of Thanos. Starfox triggered a recording of Thanos from before his death, and Thanos stated that he had made arrangements to have his consciousness uploaded into the mind of another, causing panic among those assembled. Starfox believed Gamora was the most likely candidate. Meanwhile, aboard the Ryder (new ship named after Winona), Star-Lord and Groot discovered that Knowhere was missing, and the Nova Corps informed them it was headed to Sanctuary. Knowhere attacked Sanctuary, with Outriders and the Black Order behind it all. A black hole and most of the participants were pulled through and sent through to other places in the cosmos.

Magique is pictured in OHotMU I#5 and has a partial entry in OHotMU Deluxe Edition#6.

The Imperial Guard members are generally based on DC's Legion of Super-Heroes. Magique is based on Projectra, and possibly the White Witch as well..
