(Civil War: Front Line#4 (fb) - BTS / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z HC Vol. 14 - Anti-Registration Underground entry (fb) - BTS) - Following the Stamford disaster, where hundreds had perished during a battle between New Warriors and four Raft escapees, Iron Man (Tony Stark), Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) and others worked with US officials to develop the Superhuman Registration Act (SHRA), outlawing any crimefighting activities by unregistered superheroes.

Vigilante Typeface, although his identity was already known, resolved to fight a perceived assault on freedom, and he organized an Anti-Registration Underground, beginning with ex-government operative Battlestar and anti-terrorist Solo, to support superheroes who continued fighting crime without SHRA approval. Their ranks were soon supplemented by mystic-armored Freeware; bodysuit-enhanced Green Guardswoman; Masked Rose, leader of super-team T.J.A.W. (Truth, Justice, and the American Way), empowered by accidental mutant blood exposure; exoskeleton-empowered Network; and cyborg Skybolt. Via a covert interview with Alternative reporter Sally Floyd, ARU members publicized their perspective, and several other anti-registration heroes joined, including Stone-Tough.

(Civil War: Front Line#4 / Civil War: Front Line#4 / 2) - Stone-Tough was present with the ARU when S.H.I.E.L.D. raided the ARU's safehouse and arrested most of its members.

As the ARU members debated whether to seek and join Captain America (Steve Rogers)'s Secret Avengers, a better organized and equipped anti-SHRA unit, or to remain independent, armored S.H.I.E.L.D. Cape-Killers, accompanied by Iron Man, Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers), Wonder Man (Simon Williams) and at least ten unidentified flying heroes, raided the base. Caught by surprise, few ARU members managed to effectively fight back against their more powerful and organized opponents. Although S.H.I.E.L.D. captured over 40 members, the Harbormaster, the Awe-Striker, Canasta, Dahntu, the Green Guardswoman, and the Tosser evaded capture, as did the Masked Rose, who had been absent seeking new recruits.

(Civil War: Front Line#5/2 - BTS) - ARU prisoners, such as Typeface, were seen being sent to the Prison 42.

(Civil War I#6 - BTS) - The Secret Avengers and the Superhuman Registration Act resistance arrived at Prison 42 to free the prisoners.

(Civil War I#7 - BTS / Amazing Spider-Man I#538 - BTS / Civil War: Front Line#10-11 - BTS) - The Secret Avengers penetrated Prison 42, freeing many prisoners. When the combined anti-registration forces were confronted by Iron Man's pro-registration forces, Secret Avenger Cloak (Tyrone Johnson) teleported both groups to Manhattan. Freed ARU prisoners took part in the battle between the pro and anti-registration heroes, spanning from the Negative Zone prison to the streets of New York. In the ensuing battle, which caused severe damage, the Thunderbolts' Venom (Mac Gargan) apparently killed Typeface. Other fatalities may also have occurred. Following Captain America's surrender to forestall further civilian risk, Battlestar and possibly others avoided recapture.

The government offered amnesty in return for registration. Although Gladiatrix rejected the offer, Network registered under the 50 State Initiative, while Solo also registered but pursued independent interests. Presumably, additional ARU members followed Gladiatrix's example, others followed Network's or Solo's, and still more remained at large.

Codename, real name, and nature provided by Ronald Byrd.

During the production of the Civil War: Battle Damage Report (2007), writer Paul Jenkins provided Ronald with authorization to provide identities, real names for the various background Anti-Registration Underground characters, and to flesh them out as much as he wanted. Ronald provided identities and real names for the Anti-Registration Underground entry in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z HC Vol. 14 (2010). There wasn't room to provide much more than that in that entry. However, Ronald had backgrounds and histories in mind for these characters when he provided their names.

HISTORY: Born in 1900, Ted Pendleton chanced to be in Grover's Mill, New Jersey on October 30, 1938, when tentacled extraterrestrials who were using the planet Mars as a base seized control of the town as prelude to a larger invasion. Pendleton observed these "Martians," led by the Martian High Overlord, who found their efforts disrupted by the arrival of eldritch creatures known as the Mi-Go, aka the Fungi from Yuggoth, a planet on the outer edge of the Sol system, who, having observed the "Martian" forces entering the Sol system en route to Mars, had -- whether due to curiosity, to protectiveness of the Sol system, or to unfathomable motives that none but they could understand --  followed them to Earth. The "Martians" fired energy weapons on and physically attacked the Fungi, actions that the Fungi barely noticed, but Pendleton, believing the Fungi to be enemies of the "Martians" and thus allies of humanity, intervened in the conflict and was both struck by the "Martians"' weapons discharge and partially enveloped by the atmospheric conditions which the Fungi naturally produced and which allowed them to exist in virtually any environment. The combination of alien energies mutated Pendleton's human form into a gigantic, stone-skinned superhuman, who attacked the "Martian" fleet, forcing them to flee Earth; the Fungi, whether in pursuit of the "Martians" or not, also departed Earth. Instinctively reverting to human form when the crisis was over, Pendleton changed back to mutated form, in which he proved able to function without food, fluid, or sleep, and decided to maintain it indefinitely, eventually dubbing himself "Stone-Tough." When World War II broke out nearly a year later, Stone-Tough, despite the United States' initial position of neutrality, traveled to Europe and intervened in several Allies/Axis encounters. When the United States joined the war in December 1941, U.S. government granted Stone-Tough status as an official Allied operative. While few details of Stone-Tough's wartime activities are available, it is known that, when the "Martians" returned to Earth and invaded Santiago, Chile in November 1944, he fought alongside Chilean armed forces and a handful of unidentified South American superhumans and adventurers to force their withdrawal, earning Chile's honorary Order of Merit medal in the process.

When World War II ended in 1945, Stone-Tough, who had remained in his superhuman form since November 1938, reverted to non-powered form with the intent of temporarily retiring from action, only for his human body, having foregone food, fluids, and sleep for so long, to experience the effects of long-term malnutrition, dehydration, and exhaustion, and only immediate medical attention spared him from dying within minutes. Stone-Tough spent over two decades recuperating from these conditions, although, by February 1949, he had recovered enough to provide, at the U.S. government's request, vital intelligence on the "Martians," which the U.S. relayed to the nation of Ecuador, where a third "Martian" invasion was underway; for his role in the resultant victory, the Ecuadorian government awarded him an honorary Order of Abdon Calderón medal.

In 1967, Stone-Tough, now fully recovered, learned that a gold-clad extraterrestrial called Orthon was warning select individuals about about a pending nuclear cataclysm that would supposedly destroy the Earth and offering his audience the chance to escape Earth aboard a fleet of spaceships. Aware that no nuclear explosion of any kind could result in such worldwide destruction, Stone-Tough recognized Orthon as an alien "con man," possibly intending to sell the "rescuees" on the intergalactic slave market, and dissuaded Orthon's victims from following his instructions, earning Orthon's enmity. Two years later, Stone-Tough encountered another extraterrestrial, called Ox-Ho, attempting a similar gambit, which Stone-Tough similarly exposed, making an enemy of Ox-Ho as well. Stone-Tough next clashed with Asmitor, an openly malevolent energy being whose semi-tangible form allegedly extended across the entire universe; Stone-Tough and one of Asmitor's most dedicated enemies, Rinn of the Kree, aka the Protector of the Universe, joined forces to drive Asmitor from Earth's galaxy cluster.

In 1975, Stone-Tough joined the robot Fighting Machine-1 (aka FM-1), the mutant spy called Logan (James Howlett/Wolverine), the Red Wolf (Thomas Thunderhead), the Smithville Thunderbolt (Fred Hopkins), the Forgotten One (aka Gilgamesh), sorcerer Manuel Diego, Canada's Chinook, Great Britain's Golden Grenadier, the USSR's Red Guardian (Alexi Shostakov), Japan's Robot-Master, and several others in repelling yet another "Martian" invasion, during which Stone-Tough and the Martian High Overlord engaged in personal combat. Soon afterward, he curbed the conquest efforts of Dr. David Zorak, a mutated scientist who had taken up residence in Subterranea and who had killed the members of a team of U.S. operatives called the P.A.C.K. (Professional Agents/Crime Killers) months before. In 1976, Stone-Tough again worked alongside fellow adventurers in humanitarian efforts during a string of unexplained earthquakes. A year later, he protected the United States from a swarm of supernatural quasi-human locusts. In 1979, Stone-Tough disrupted the activities of another would-be conqueror, Ulan Bator, self-declared Emperor of Mongolia (aka King of the Mongols). Later that year, Stone-Tough, at the U.S. government's request, worked in non-powered form in Afghanistan as government liaison with both the USA's Fury Force and the USSR's Pravda Patrol, a role he held until 1981. The following year, Stone-Tough, still in non-powered form and still acting under U.S. authority, accompanied mutant hunter Dr. Deth and his sidekicks, Kip Hama and Muffy Reese, in tracking and killing demented, dangerous mutants in remote parts of the United States but parted company with the trio when he realized they were nearly as insane as their prey. Five years later, when powerful entities called Kryon, Myrva, and Quetzalcoatl (presumably an impersonator of the T?teoh (Aztec) god of the same name) menaced Earth during a rare planetary alignment, the so-called "Great Harmonic Convergence," Stone-Tough, resuming superhuman form, again allied with others to defeat the entities and drive them from Earth.

In 1999, Earth was plagued by several violent phenomena within a months-long time period, including an assault on Earth by a "killer asteroid" of apparently demonic origin; a possibly sentient solar flare dubbed "Kill-Shot;" three flaming meteor-like creatures and other celestial threats; the entry into the Sol System of the planetoid called Nibiru, aka "Planet X;" repeated attempted shifts of Earth's polar axis; "divine" apparitions harbinging death; mass invasions by both extradimensional and extraterrestrial forces, including one supposedly led by "Satan" himself; multiple nuclear skirmishes in several countries; and worldwide blackened skies, downpours, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tidal waves, volcanic eruptions, and other seemingly natural disasters, all overseen if not outright orchestrated by an entity called the Alarmingly Powerful King, whose coming had supposedly been foretold centuries before by Michel de Nostredame (1503-1566), aka Nostradamus. During these months, the Ancient One (Yao), Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth dimension, recruited and directed Stone-Tough and many other Earth-based superhumans, along with several angels and extraterrestrials, in rescuing thousands of people from such dangers.

Upon learning of the Alarmingly Powerful King's ultimate intention of raising Earth's temperature to over 18 trillion degrees Fahrenheit in order to duplicate the supposed environment of the Big Bang, the Ancient One led Stone-Tough and the rest of his forces to confront the King's at the latter's base in the ruins of the ancient city Megiddo in Israel, a confrontation that culminated in a prolonged, savage battle, during which participants on both sides died in combat before Stone-Tough apparently killed the King himself, ending the worldwide violent phenomena and prompting the King's now near-powerless followers to scatter to safety across Earth, bringing an end to the conflict later referred to by its survivors as "the War of Wars." In order to remove humanity's memories of the horrific chain of events over the preceding months and implant "ordinary" memories in their place, the Ancient One recruited several human sorcerers and telepaths for the task then removed most of the physical evidence of the past months' disasters. Exhausted and traumatized, the surviving members of the Ancient One's forces withdrew into seclusion, many of them, such as Stone-Tough, retiring entirely from their lives as superhuman adventurers.

In recent years, during the "Maximum Security" crisis, caused by the Intergalactic Council designating Earth a prison planet and scattering hundreds of extraterrestrial criminals across the world, Stone-Tough, while watching media footage of ongoing battles between Earth natives and aliens, recognized some of his former enemies -- the Martian High Overlord, Orthon, and others -- among the latter, and he returned to action to join many other Earth-based superhumans in battling the alien criminals. Once the crisis was resolved, he resumed his reclusive life.

Following the passage of the Superhuman Registration Act (SHRA), Stone-Tough, while not objecting to the SHRA per se, refused to register as a protest against U.S. foreign policies. Eventually, he was recruited into Typeface's Anti-Registration Underground and was present when SHIELD raided the ARU's safehouse and arrested most of its members, including himself. Upon his arrest, however, unidentified government officials, concerned that Stone-Tough's court testimony might pose threats to national security, intervened and guaranteed he would not receive a prison sentence. After the SHRA's repeal, Stone-Tough again returned to seclusion.

HEIGHT: 5'7" (transformed: 8')              WEIGHT: 147 lbs. (transformed: 800 lbs.)
EYES: Black (transformed: white)          HAIR: White (formerly red;transformed: none)

ABILITIES/ACCESSORIES: In his superhuman form, Stone-Tough is strong enough to lift at least fifty tons under optimal conditions and is resistant to most forms of attack or injury and literally cannot bleed or be bruised. He can fly at speeds of up to one thousand mph; even when on the ground, his speed and reflexes are at least ten time faster than those of a baseline human. In his superhuman form, he requires neither food, fluid, nor sleep; however, when he reverts to his non-powered form, the accumulated results of foregoing such basic human needs overcomes him, requiring him to limit the time he spends in superhuman form..
