(Combat Casey I#26/2) - February, 1943. In Libya, after a
sandstorm saved Captain Stone's squad from Rommel's tanks, his
subordinates "Combat" Casey and Percival "Penny" Pennington used Nazi
planes to kick up their own sandstorm and forced Rommel's men to
surrender.
(Combat Casey I#21/4) - March 25, 1943 In Gabes, Tunisia, Captain Stone led Able Company including "Combat" Casey and Percival "Penny" Pennington and helped drive out Nazi forces to help General Patton's tanks proceed.
(Combat Casey I#20/4) - November 1943. In Monte Camino, Italy, Casey and "Penny" were caught by General Volker but "Penny" befriended Volker's giant eagles. The eagles helped the duo escape and even captured Volker to return to Stone as their prisoner.
(Combat I#7) - Captain Stone ordered Casey and "Penny" to find the missing combat photographer Flash "Torchy" Finnegan.
(Combat I#7/3) - Captain Stone was wounded by a shell during an enemy bombardment. This placed "Combat" Casey in temporary command of the squad.
(Combat Casey I#6) - Captain Stone temporarily reassigned Casey and "Penny" to Major Kent's army engineers as a punishment for their unruly behavior.
(Combat Casey I#7) - Captain Stone assigned "Combat" Casey and "Penny" to a heavy machine gun post, which they successfully held against the Chinese.
(Combat Casey I#7/4 - BTS) - Captain Stone gave Flash Finnegan permission to remain on the front lines for as long as she willed. Fascinated by "Combat" Casey and "Penny," she spent her time photographing them in action.
(Combat Casey I#8) - Captain Stone assigned Casey and "Penny" to guard against the Communists on a mountainside, which the men did from a cavern. When they finally drove back the enemy forces, the two men wanted to rejoin the company but Stone assigned them to rear guard - in another cave!
(Combat Casey I#8/3) - When a number of beautiful showgirls were scheduled to visit their camp, Captain Stone ordered "Penny" to pick them up from a nearby town in a two-and-a-half ton truck. However, Sgt. Pulaski wanted the pleasure of meeting the women himself and falsely claimed "Penny" was assigned to patrol that evening. Stone believed Pulaski and gave the privilege of picking up the showgirls to him. However, the showgirls wound up being intercepted by Chinese soldiers and were rescued by "Penny" while on his patrol. When Pulaski returned to camp, having tired of waiting for the showgirls, Captain Stone showed Pulaski that "Penny" had escorted the women to the camp and that they had been dancing with his fellow soldiers for several hours.
(Combat Casey I#8/4) - Casey and "Penny" returned from a mission with valuable enemy maps but were dizzy from having escaped enemy fire by rolling down a hill inside steel drums. Seeing them stagger before him, Captain Stone accused the duo of drinking on duty and placed them in the stockade.
(Combat Casey I#9) - When Casey and "Penny" returned from the field and explained how they used C-ration cans to fabricate makeshift grenades and destroy an ammunition dump, Captain Stone considered the story unbelievable and sent them to the stockade.
(Combat Casey I#9/2) - Captain Stone received enemy soldiers whom Casey and "Penny" had caught by tricking them into handling poison ivy.
(Combat Casey I#9/4) - Captain Stone sent Casey and "Penny" to discover why the Chinese were fighting unusually hard to defend White Horse Mountain.
(Combat I#11) - After Casey and "Penny" reported they'd destroyed a Chinese bridge across the Han River, Captain Stone noted they'd be certain to build another elsewhere. He assigned Casey to form two-man patrols along the river to find the new bridge, which Casey and "Penny" destroyed by lighting oil drums and rolling them at the bridge. Some of the drums floated downriver and destroyed a Chinese patrol that had been engaged with other members of Stone's company. Not knowing what Casey and "Penny" had done, Stone thought the Chinese patrol had accidentally destroyed themselves with a weapon intended for them and ordered Casey and "Penny" to investigate. With tongue-in-cheek, Casey accepted the assignment.
(Combat Casey I#10/2) - Kaesong Katie and her all-female guerrillas stole explosives from U.S. ammunition depots, including one under Captain Stone's oversight. As Katie and her women destroyed various strategic resources, Stone offered anything to the man who came up with a plan to defeat them. "Penny," having noticed Katie and her women had an interest in American women's fashions, collected garments from nurses and U.S.O. performers and offered it to the women. The women surrendered in exchange for the clothes and Stone made good on his offer to"Penny." All "Penny" wanted was to see Sgt. Pulaski smile and Pulaski conceded with a grin.
(Combat Casey I#10/4) - Captain Stone sent Casey and "Penny" out equipped with flamethrowers to clear out known Chinese army posts from farmhouses.
(Combat Casey I#11 - BTS) - Captain Stone ordered "Combat" Casey and "Penny" to recapture Kaesong Katie and the papers she had earlier stolen from them. In the end, Casey and "Penny" returned with the papers, leaving Kaesong Katie to her apparent death at the hands of her own people.
(Combat Casey I#12/2) - When "Penny"'s supply truck pulled in with considerable damage, Sgt. Pulaski told Captain Stone he wanted to assign "Penny" a latrine digging detail as punishment. However, "Penny" revealed that he had caught the guerrilla leader Colonel Pu-Tang and Captain Stone rewarded him with a week's pass then assigned the latrine detail to Sgt. Pulaski.
(Combat Casey I#13) - Captain Stone sent "Combat" Casey and "Penny" on a patrol to find out where recently-captured soldiers were being held. Casey and "Penny" wound up in the POW camp and sprang a breakout with the Manatelli Brothers.
(Combat Casey I#13/2) - After Sgt. Pulaski and "Penny" brought him two prisoners, Stone told them he would nominate them for the silver star and further offered to send the soldier with the most medals on a stateside trip with the most beautiful actresses of Broadway and Hollywood. Sgt. Pulaski's silver star came through but Stone had to regretful tell "Penny" he had been passed over. Later," Penny"'s heroism against a Communist blockade won him a chestful of medals from a visiting UN delegation and Stone noted to Pulaski that he would have to concede defeat to "Penny."
(Combat Casey I#15/4) - After "Combat" Casey helped prevent an ambush on their lines, Captain Stone and his men found the duo asleep in a haystack.
(Combat Casey I#16) - Captain Stone greeted "Combat" Casey and "Penny" after they'd escaped a North Korean prison camp. They brought back intelligence about illegal combat planes in North Korea, which Stone thanked them for providing.
(Combat Casey I#21) - Captain Stone led the 2nd Infantry Division to a Korean town and was ready to assault it until the villagers warned that their children were prisoners of the Communist soldiers. Stone agonized over the right decision to make, even silently praying that evening. Before Stone could decide whether to risk the children's lives, Casey and "Penny" came up with a plan to trick the enemies into thinking the children were carrying a plague, causing them to surrender. Stone decided Casey and "Penny" were the answer to his prayers.
(Combat Casey I#22) - Captain Stone led Baker Company through the snowy mountains to the village of Nanyang. The townsfolk there rang their sacred bell to warn them that Chinese forces had occupied the town. Captain Stone led his men to drive the Chinese from Nanyang but the Chinese captured the bell as punishment to the town, threatening to destroy it unless the townsfolk drove Baker Company out of the town. Stone ordered his men to retake the bell, which Casey and "Penny" accomplished.
(Combat Casey I#24/4) - After Casey and "Penny" were captured by Communist soldiers, Captain Stone received a distress message from them and led reinforcements to rescue them.
(Combat Casey I#25/5) - While on sentry duty, Casey and "Penny" caught a soldier trying to steal their food supplies. A South Korean civilian confirmed local farmers were losing their crops to enemy soldiers. Casey and "Penny" had the farmer lead them to his farm and lay in wait to observe the enemy's tactics. When Colonel Mung sent his men out to collect wagons full of crops, Casey, "Penny," Captain Stone and the rest of their company snuck inside the wagons. Once the wagons reached Colonel Mung, they leaped out and captured the Chinese.
(Combat Casey I#26) - When their lines were threatened by enemy tanks, "Penny" and Casey insisted they could handle the problem. Now well-used to their methods, Captain Stone gave them a chance. "Penny" stopped the tanks by electrifying barbed wire so that when the tanks ran over them they would be electrocuted, forcing the tanks to surrender. Captain Stone congratulated Casey and "Penny," saying he was used to expecting the impossible from them.
(Combat Casey I#27) - When confronted by a large enemy cannon, "Penny" befriended an eagle and suggested to Captain Stone they could use the eagle to assist them. The eagle dropped dynamite on the enemy and wrecked the cannon, allowing Captain Stone to lead Dog Company forward and capture the position.
(Combat Casey I#28/2) - After sending "Combat" Casey and "Penny" out to capture enemy plans, the duo reported back to Captain Stone that they had failed in that task but destroyed an enemy railroad bridge. Stone informed them that they had successfully learned the Chinese plans through other means and their plan had been to use that railroad, meaning it was a successful assignment.
Comments: Created by Hank Chapman and Robert Q. Sale
For some reason, Captain Stone ceased to be "Combat" Casey's superior officer after Combat Casey I#28. Starting with issue #29, Captain Rocke - who was Battle Brady's superior officer - took over that role in the series.
There are also a lot of stories after Combat Casey I#21 (both in World War II and Korea) where Casey and "Penny" are led by an unidentified captain who might Captain Stone but isn't referred to by name.
