History:

(Battlefront#44/4 (fb) - BTS) - Hans Becker was born in Germany but migrated with his family to the USA when he was still a child.

(Battlefront#44/4) - Becker was dispatched to France as part of the military American Expeditionary Force (AEF) and in April 1918 was sent as part of the reinforcements in the front line trenches. He sensed the reservations and distrust of his fellow soldiers because of his German parentage and birth, and was constantly sidelined from active duty, especially by Sergeant Stone. Keen to prove himself, he volunteered when Major Forrest told Stone to go on a dangerous mission to capture a German officer. Recognizing his worth due to his German background, Forrest ordered Stone to take him. They crawled across the deadly no man's land but the distrustful Stone was hit by German gunfire. Becker quickly overpowered the German gun nest and took the German officer there prisoner while carrying his sergeant over his shoulder. Ordering the prisoner in German, they crawled to the AEF forces but encountered a German patrol. Hidden, Becker told his prisoner to move them away, telling the German that he could understand what was being said. Despite the weight of the wounded sergeant and the difficulty of keeping the prisoner covered with a gun, Becker made it back to his base. Sergeant Stone then declared before the other US soldiers there that Becker was indeed a "fighting Yank", with one soldier Americanizing his name to "Hank" Becker.

Comments: Created by uncredited writer and artist.

Hans is German for John, so dubbing Becker as Hank had more to do with the sound.
