Powers/Abilities: Vapor has the ability to change her corporeal body into various gases with just a thought. Darnell has changed into "noxious gases," mustard gas, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, chlorine gas, cyanide gas, mononuclear mist, sulfuric acid gas, alkali and tear gas, and she is capable of changing back into fully human form. When she is in any form, she is subject to the chemical properties of that form. She is immune to physical injury but can only assume her original form for brief periods of time. In her Vapor form, she is vulnerable to winds and air pressure most readily. Once dispersed, it can take her time time to reincorporate. Vapor can be contained in airtight cells.

History:
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Deluxe Edition I#13 - U-Foes entry - BTS) - Ann Darnell was a citizen of the United States with no criminal record.

(Incredible Hulk I#254 (fb) - BTS) - After getting her degree as a "life-support specialist"/engineer, Ann Darnell began dating Simon Utrecht, a former politician and an industrialist with influence rivaling Tony Stark, who had ample money. Utrecht at some point told Ann of his plan to build a starship and take it into space during a cosmic ray storm, re-creating the events that gave the Fantastic Four their powers. Ann, wanting power and fame for herself, agreed to go with him and recruited her brother Jimmy Darnell, a fuel-propulsion engineer, to join them as Simon recruited Mike Steel himself to build the ship and pilot it.

(Incredible Hulk I#254) - Once the ship was finally ready, the group donned green spacesuits with gold helmets and launched into space from Utrecht's private launching facility at Utrecht Industries. A wandering Bruce Banner noticed the rocket launch and began monitoring the computers while Ann and the others were in orbit. When the cosmic rays bombarded the ship, breaking apart the life-support cylinders and blanketing Ann Darnell in a mixture of gases as well as exposing them all to cosmic rays, Banner reprogrammed the rocket to return early, limiting the cosmic ray exposure despite Utrecht's plan for the group to gain maximum exposure to the rays before returning to Earth. The ship soon crashed back to earth and the four emerged transformed into monstrous forms, immediately choosing to launch careers as supervillains. Discovering that the concerned Bruce Banner had altered their computer, bringing their ship back early out of concern for their safety, Utrecht ordered the group attacked the civilian, choosing their supervillain codenames as they realized their new capabilities. Ann, picking the name Vapor, filled Bruce's lungs with noxious gases generated by her own body. The group, now calling themselves the U-Foes after Utrecht himself, tried killing Banner, who then changed into the Hulk. In key moments in the ensuing fight, Vapor learned how to turn incorporeal to avoid physical blows and soon blanketed the Hulk with a cloud of mustard gas but Vector accidentally knocked her aside, causing her to change to hydrogen and start on fire when she was knocked into X-Ray. She screamed in pain and returned herself to human form but was unable to hug Vector, as his power repelled her. The effects of the cosmic rays then caught up with the group as their powers overloaded and Vapor, against her will, turned into vapor and blew away on the breeze as she cried out for help.

(Incredible Hulk II#275) - The U-Foes regrouped at Utrecht Industries.

(Incredible Hulk II#276) - Still wanting revenge for his earlier interference with their computers, the "uncanny U-Foes" attacked Bruce Banner as he was professing his love to Betty Ross. They buffeted the Hulk with attacks, Vapor blanketing him in poisonous gases from her "caustic caresses." Banner changed to the Hulk, who did a double clap to drive Vaper away in the wind but she soon reformed and when Hulk changed back into Banner, she poisoned his lungs once again. The group realized that if they killed Banner publicly, it might make them famous.

(Incredible Hulk II#277) - The U-Foes strung up Bruce Banner and then broadcasted his capture onto television networks, wanting to execute him publicly, but he was freed by his allies Bereet, Rick Jones and Betty Ross while the U-Foes argued among themselves about what to do with Banner. When Hulk defeated X-Ray, Vapor became furious and turned herself into a corrosive gas to get revenge but Hulk threw Ironclad in the way and she badly burned her ally's metal form on accident so she quickly turned herself into an anesthetic gas instead to soothe his wounds. Hulk then broke Vector's hands and left the U-Foes badly defeated.

(Incredible Hulk I#278) - Vapor remained distraught, tending to Ironclad's wounds.

(Incredible Hulk I#304 (fb) - BTS) - The U-Foes were apprehended and sentenced to their own prison, surrounded by a neutralizer-grid and nega-poles to keep their powers void.

(Incredible Hulk II#304) - Vapor read a book while her imprisoned teammates complained. Soon, District Attorney Allison Munroe and the U-Foes' attorney, Henry Price Claringer, staged a court hearing to convince the U-Foes to voluntarily surrender their powers and, after being kept in prison for months while waiting trial, the U-Foes pretended to be interested in dealing with Munroe and signed the papers against advice from Claringer. When the null field in the prison was disrupted, the U-Foes got their powers back and attacked the entire room to secure their escape. Vapor rendered some guards unconscious but Vector's powers repelled back on the villains, sending them out of reality completely. The U-Foes reappeared in a realm connected to the interdimensional Crossroads, where they found the Hulk waiting.

(Incredible Hulk II#305) -  Reminding Vector to give requests not orders after Vector ordered the U-Foes to attack, Vapor (who felt overwhelmed in this extradimensional world) attacked the Hulk. Shifting sensory perceptions caused by the Crossroads made the Hulk and U-Foes appear as children then adolescents then back to adults again. Vapor turned herself into a combination of acidic gases and filled the Hulk's lungs but he breathed her out as fire, covering Ironclad in the corrosive substance. When Hulk defeated Vector and X-Ray, Vapor furiously attacked, surrounding the Hulk with poisonous gas, not knowing that Dr. Strange was guiding the Hulk from afar, directing the Hulk into leaping through a portal to a world with no atmosphere, where Vapor was left to dissipate, unable to scream.

(Avengers I#304 (fb) - BTS) - Vapor escaped the vacuum and rejoined with the U-Foes but they remained trapped in the Crossroads dimension.

(Avengers I#304) - When Portal accidentally opened a portal to the Crossroads, the U-Foes returned to earth, landing right in front of the Avengers and Puma. Vapor changed into carbon monoxide and made Puma breathe her as Vector suggested she kill him with chlorine gas instead but Thor soon dissipated her with a whirlwind generated by Mjolnir then used lightning to shock her back into human form.

(Avengers West Coast I#53 (fb) - BTS) - The U-Foes were imprisoned in the Vault but escaped and made plans to meet up later. Vector failed to show and the U-Foes saw footage of him fighting the Avengers and assumed he'd been killed so they made plans to go after the Avengers themselves.

(Avengers West Coast I#53) - Vapor attacked the Avengers West Coast Compound and found the Scarlet Witch in a fugue state. Vapor immediately tried to kill her with cyanide gas but Wonder Man got Wanda to safety then Iron Man sucked Vapor into one of his armor's holding tanks. Vapor changed into a mononuclear mist and invaded the armor, causing Iron Man to blast her back out. Vapor then blanketed the Avengers with a caustic vapor, making them choke before Wanda focused a hex, turning Ann Darnell back into her human form. Vector showed up and the U-Foes realized they'd been played (though the culprit, Loki, remained hidden).

(Captain America I#389) - Vapor joined Superia's Femizons and attended the Power Pageant on their yacht. They soon discovered Captain America and Paladin on the boat.

(Captain America I#390) - The Femizons rushed to attack the two heroes and Vapor tried poisoning Captain America but he held his breath.

(Captain America I#391) - Vapor attended a speech held by Superia.

(Darkhawk I#6 (fb) - BTS) - Vapor rejoined the U-Foes.

(Darkhawk I#6) - The U-Foes attacked a hospital in New York, where Portal was a patient, and fought Captain America, Darkhawk and Daredevil. During the fight, Vapor changed into chlorine gas and entered Darkhawk's armor but Darkhawk learned that, in his changed form, he didn't need to breathe. When she changed into mustard gas, Daredevil dispelled her by twirling his billy club around quickly. She was defeated when X-Ray hit her with a stray blast.

(Avengers: Death Trap-The Vault (fb) - BTS) - Vapor was imprisoned at the Vault.

(Avengers: Death Trap-The Vault) - During a mass breakout at the Vault, Thunderball instructed Vapor to neutralize gas that was fired to knock the prisoners out. Later, the Avengers quell the prison riot.

(Incredible Hulk II#397 (fb) - BTS) - The Leader broke the U-Foes out of prison and sent them on a mission to capture the Pantheon's Agamemnon. The U-Foes attacked the Mount, the base of the Hulk and the Pantheon, knocking out Ajax and scaring the child Yetta.

(Incredible Hulk II#397) - The U-Foes battled the Hulk and the Pantheon. During the fight, Vapor was dispelled by Hector's mace and she later turned to hydrogen and hit fire to cause an explosion. Vapor changed in and out of human form in the fight but was defeated when Hulk blasted her with oxygen while she was in hydrogen form, turning her into water, and then mopped her water form up with a mop.

(Incredible Hulk II#401) - The U-Foes were held by the Pantheon for a time and were told that the Hulk had killed the Leader. No longer needed, the U-Foes were teleported abruptly into the snow by Omnibus, materializing near the Hulk, whom Ironclad immediately attacked. They were attacked in return by the Hulk, who threatened to kill Ironclad before Vector agreed to leave peacefully, an act that annoyed Ann.

(Thunderbolts '97 Annual (fb) - BTS) - Vapor and the rest of the U-Foes were again incarcerated at the Vault.

(Thunderbolts '97 Annual) - During a breakout from the Vault, the U-Foes sought to escape, battling the Thunderbolts, who tried to stop them.

(Heroes for Hire I#1 (fb) - BTS) - The Master of the World hired the U-Foes to work with rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in staging a prison break from the Vault.

(Heroes for Hire I#1) - Ironclad posed as a prisoner on a S.H.I.E.L.D. transport and Vapor, in a transparent form, disabled the Guardsmen, successfully breaking the Vault security systems down. Later, the U-Foes attacked Hulk directly and Vapor snuck into his lungs, making Hulk cough as she taunted him. After the Hulk was captured and controlled using Controller technology, the group attacked a council meeting at the United Nations with the mind-controlled Hulk as an additional operative on the team. During the attack, Vapor threatened to have the Hulk twist the heads off of anyone who resisted. A group of individual heroes, including White Tiger, Hercules and Iron Fist, responded to the attack and, after the Hulk was freed, he dispersed Vapor with a gamma clap. The U-Foes were then quickly defeated.

(Heroes for Hire I#2 (fb) - BTS) - The U-Foes attacked the Gem Theater, knocking out D.W. Griffith.

(Heroes for Hire I#2) - When Luke Cage arrived at the theater, the U-Foes attacked him as well and Vapor filled his lungs with her gaseous form. They then took the captured Cage to the Master of the World.

(Heroes for Hire I#4) - When the Master of the World ordered the U-Foes to let themselves get arrested in a longer term plot against the Heroes for Hire, the U-Foes refused, angering the Master. They agreed to a modified plot but stated that they would no longer work for him after that, angering the Master even more. After Vapor put a control disc on Iron Fist, the newly-dubbed Heroes for Hire (White Tiger, Black Knight, Iron Fist, Luke Cage) fought the U-Foes and the Controller (whom the Master had also sent), and Vapor sparred with White Tiger during the battle. The U-Foes were soon betrayed by the Master, who overloaded their powers during the battle, leaving them all unconscious to be arrested.

(She-Hulk I#6 (fb) - BTS) - The U-Foes ended up shrunk down and locked up in the Big House prison.

(She-Hulk I#6) - During a prison outbreak of tiny supervillains, the U-Foes attacked She-Hulk, Holden Holliway and Southpaw. Vapor tried turning into cyanide but Yellowjacket recognized it was hydrogen cyanide and ignited her with a blast.

(Spider-Man: Breakout#1 (fb) - BTS) - Again imprisoned in the Vault, Vapor was contained in a little bubble unit. The U-Foes apparently carried her around from room to room and when they tried planning a breakout from prison, Crossfire betrayed them and they ended up in solitary confinement.

(New Avengers I#1-2) - The U-Foes were among the foes broken out of the Vault by Electro.

(Spider-Man: Breakout I#1) - After taking hostages, the U-Foes hid out in a suburban house, where Utrecht confided in Ann how much he had regretted turning them into villains. As they tried to escape, rival criminals from their time in prison, including Mr. Fear, the Controller and Crossfire, attacked.

(Thunderbolts I#104) - After the passage of the Superhuman Registration Act, the Thunderbolts (Blizzard, Fixer, Joystick, Quicksand) attacked and defeated the U-Foes, with Blizzard freezing Vapor in mid-air. Later, the U-Foes chose to join up with the Thunderbolts Army.

(Civil War I#5) - The U-Foes were seen among the Thunderbolts Army.

(She-Hulk II#17) - The U-Foes were defeated by the new Hulkbusters team, with Vapor being contained by Agent Crimson.

(New Avengers I#35) - Vapor and the U-Foes joined the Hood's Army.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#26 (fb) - BTS) - Norman Osborn drafted several villains into Camp H.A.M.M.E.R. as government-sanctioned superheroes, the U-Foes among them. Despite the word "foes" in their team name, the U-Foes became the Osborn-appointed superheroes of North Carolina.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#26) - The U-Foes battled the Avengers Resistance, trying to capture them on the behalf of the Initiative.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#28) - The Initiative, including Vapor, were sent to Las Vegas to fight the Avengers Resistance movement.

(Siege I#1) - The U-Foes were sent to fight Volstagg at Soldier Field, resulting in massive property damage and civilian casualties. The Initiative blamed the Asgardians and prepared a siege on Asgard.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#32 (fb) - BTS) - Vapor made a report on the news about the events at Soldier Field, blaming Asgardian magic for the level of violence used during the fight and claiming that was why the Initiative existed.

(Venom II#28) - When journalist Katy Kiernan discovered the U-Foes in their plot, the villains captured her and soon Venom ("Flash" Thompson) attacked, looking for Kiernan. He fought off Vapor, in the form of poison gas, then the U-Foes turned on civilians to distract Venom.

(Immortal Hulk I#44) - Vapor surrounded the emaciated Hulk, looking like a mouth that was swallowing him whole as she made him vomit. Before the U-Foes were done, Hulk withered into a skeleton and they left him for dead, not knowing he couldn't die.

(Immortal Hulk I#45) - Vapor warned the others to not believe Hulk was dead so easily and instructed them to keep bombarding the body with radiation but Hulk soon returned to life.

(Immortal Hulk I#46) - Vapor changed to sulfuric acid gas to kill the Hulk after he began harming the U-Foes but Hulk simply breathed her into his lungs then spit her into Vector's eyes, burning them. Vapor swiftly switched to alkali to try to soothe the burns. The U-Foes, badly defeated, reported back to the disappointed Gyrich and Vapor let Gyrich know that the situation was all his fault for not being prepared.

(Amazing Spider-Man V#76 (fb) - BTS) - The Beyond Corporation hired the U-Foes to retrieve equipment for them.

(Amazing Spider-Man V#75) - The U-Foes attacked Empire State University, destroying property and harming civilians, and when the two Spider-Men attacked (Peter Parker and Ben Reilly), the U-Foes fought back and caused an explosion to cover the escape.

(Amazing Spider-Man V#76) - Spider-Man attacked the U-Foes and used vacuum devices to disperse Vapor, dissipating her out of the air. As a result of the fight, Peter Parker ended up in a coma due to exposure to poisonous gas and radiation.

(Amazing Spider-Man V#80.BEY (fb) - BTS) - After some time in the hospital to treat her injuries, Vapor was imprisoned and isolated in a cell that blocked her powers.

(Amazing Spider-Man V#80.BEY) - In her cell, Vapor was visited by May Parker, who showed her a picture of her nephew Peter Parker, saying he'd been harmed during the U-Foes recent fight. Vapor stated that she was a bad guy and didn't care but May expressed a belief that Ann was a good person. Ann gave May a sample of her own vapors, making her promise she wouldn't tell anyone, so that the doctors could use it to cure Peter.

(Sentry IV#2 (fb) - BTS) - The U-Foes were being transported together to a new prison and they broke out of custody and fought the Avengers.

(Sentry IV#2) - The new Sentry (Ryan Topper) attacked, defeating the U-Foes.

(Sentry IV#3) - The U-Foes were returned to custody.

    As an evil counterpart to the Invisible Woman, I find this character much more interesting than boob-window Malice. Vapor is one of those women with untapped potential - a dark evil streak balanced by some fascinating character motivations and an amazing power-set. Would love to see her solidify into something unforgettable and not evaporate away (Yup, chemistry pun).

    The U-Foes are obviously named for Utrecht but the name definitely gives Unidentified Flying Object vibes.
