Powers/Abilities: Jeff moves at superhuman speed and has been measured at approximately 300 miles per hour for ten-minute bursts. His metabolism is between 3 and 10 times faster than the average human. He can maintain a minimum speed of 150 miles per hour for four hours before fatigue and hunger impair his performance. His body derives energy from food more efficiently than the average human and his muscle tissue is stronger and more resilient than the average human. He cannot remain still; his body is constantly shivering from the nervous energy in his system. He sweats profusely and thus his body frequently smells rank. He can tolerate cold weather better than hot; his shivering keeps him warm in cool air. He needs to intake approximately 5 to 10 times the calories of normal human of his age, height and build. Significantly fewer calories will impair his health, causing malnutrition and eventually render him comatose.

    Moving at high speeds often affects how well he can hear due to the noise of the air moving past his ear. He frequently speaks too quickly to be intelligible and has to consciously drawl in order to be understood. Jeff needs to wear protective eyewear such as his helmet when he exceeds 125 miles per hour in order to see well.

History:

(Official Timeline of the New Universe) - On July 22, 1986, Jeff Walters was working as manager at a Burger King in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and observed the White Event outside the window. Unknown to him, the White Event was a cosmic phenomenon caused by the Star Brand.

(D.P.7 Annual I#1) - On September 19, 1986, Jeff was working a shift as manager at Burger King in Milwaukee when his paranormal abilities began to manifest. As his metabolism began to change, causing him to become nervous and jittery, Jeff's subordinate Lynnette offered to look after the restaurant while he stepped outside for fresh air. Jeff felt a large amount of energy building up inside and decided to start running to burn off energy. Although Jeff hadn't considered himself much of a runner before, his new paranormal abilities made it easy for him to run. Jeff was unaware that as he ran he was steadily going faster and going well above the normal human limits. Coming to a stop, he realized he had burned off a great deal of weight and wondered why he hadn't thought of running before because he "obviously" had a gift for it. Racing back to Burger King he apologized to Lynnette for being away longer than he intended. Jeff let Lynnette go home while he closed up the Burger King for the night. He fried up several burgers for himself as a late night snack to replace the calories he'd spent. Unknown to Jeff, he'd been observed by the ghostly paranormal the Witness, whose own parability caused him to seek out paranormals and watch their powers manifest.

(D.P.7 I#1 (fb)) - Jeff's body continued to shake. He went to doctors for help but even tranquilizers didn't slow him down. He began running more frequently and shed more and more of his fat. While running on the highway, he observed that he was moving so fast, cars seemed to be travelling in reverse.

(D.P.7 I#19/The Clinic) - On September 27, 1986, Jeff went to the Clinic for Paranormal Research for help in controlling his parability. He was placed in Therapy Group C.

(D.P.7 I#1) - On September 29, 1986, Therapy Group C met under the guidance of the Clinic's Dr. Jane Semple, who introduced the new patients Dave Landers and Randy O'Brien. At the time, Jeff's fellow group members included Charlotte Beck, Lenore Fenzl, Stephanie Harrington and Scuzz. Jeff introduced himself to Dave and Randy and, at Charlotte's urging, demonstrated his power by swapping Charlotte's chair with the cinder block Dave had been seated on. The chair was unable to support Dave's weight, causing it to crumple and leave Dave on the floor. Dave angrily smashed a piece of the chair and told Jeff not to make fun of him again. Later, Lenore demonstrated her power on Jeff and caused him to temporarily stop shaking. Jeff was pleased and told Lenore he liked having her around.

    In the weeks that followed, Therapy Group C continued to bond together. On October 19, 1986, Randy discovered the Clinic's staff were making plans to brainwash them. Regulator took Randy away to silence him but the rest of Therapy Group C learned what had happened from Dave. As they debated in the Clinic's hallways whether to save Randy and leave the Clinic, a team of Clinic security personnel entered the hallway armed with tranquilizer guns. When they opened fire at the group, Jeff caught one of their darts mid-air while Lenore used her parability to freeze the guards in their tracks. The group went to rescue Randy from Regulator but he used his own parability to regulate physiological reactions upon them, cutting off blood circulation in Jeff's legs so that he couldn't stand. However, Dave overcame the pain Regulator put him through and struck him down, cancelling his parability's effects. When all seven of the group members had revived they resolved to break out of the Clinic and fled into the night.

(D.P.7 I#2) - The seven friends went through the woods and to the highway, with Jeff using his speed to scout ahead. He finally located a bus and Charlotte used her parability to stop the vehicle, then Lenore paralyzed the passengers so they could commandeer it. As they travelled down the road to Dave's mobile home, Jeff grew faint due to lack of food and was no longer shaking, alarming the others. Scuzz schemed to steal the food by placing an order at McDonald's but when he returned to the bus, Jeff was unconscious. Stephanie used her parability to increase Jeff's energy and he awoke, ran into the McDonald's and stole away all the food, bringing it back to the bus to be consumed. As they continued on their way, Scuzz suggested they should also take on codenames and suggested Jeff should be "the Blur, seein' as how that's what he looks like."

    Three miles from Dave's mobile home the group left the bus and continued on foot. Jeff took the opportunity to forage for food from a farmer's field. However, they were ambushed by Bloodhound, Shrapnel and Vice Versa, three paranormal headhunters working for the Clinic. Bloodhound hit Jeff with a tranquilizer dart that knocked him out but Stephanie was immune to the darts and used her sparks to awaken Jeff. Jeff stole Bloodhound's rifle then attacked Vice Versa but her parability caused him to be flung backwards when he approached her. Jeff went after Shrapnel next and stole both his rifle and sunglasses. When Shrapnel prepared to use his own parability to fire explosive blasts from his skin, Randy's Anti-Body grabbed Shrapnel by the legs to divert the blast to the ground and Jeff punched Shrapnel unconscious. Jeff returned to deal with Bloodhound but Bloodhound raised Lenore's mask, causing her parability to reduce Jeff's speed. Bloodhound threatened to slit Lenore's throat unless Jeff surrendered but Charlotte intervened and used her parability to make his knife slip out of his hand. When all of their group had been revived and the three headhunters were incapacitated they continued toward Dave's mobile home.

(D.P.7 I#3) - In the early hours of October 21, 1986, Randy and Stephanie called the police to try and arrest Bloodhound, Shrapnel and Vice Versa but by the time they led the police to where they had left the trio, they had revived and escaped. When the police began to suspect Randy and Stephanie were involved in commandeering the bus the tried to arrest them. As Randy and Stephanie fought back, Jeff ran in and used his superhuman speed to punch both officers and take the gun from the hand of one officer. However, unused to his superhuman speed, Jeff was mortified when Randy revealed his punches had given the officers serious concussions and when he took away the gun he had ripped off the officer's trigger finger. Jeff located the missing finger and Stephanie used her parability to reattach it. The three of them brought the officers to the nearest hospital.

    After hearing what happened with the police, Dave attached his mobile home to his truck and the seven friends took to the highway to keep ahead of the Clinic. When Bloodhound, Shrapnel and Vice Versa pursued them in a police car and fired a gas grenade into the mobile home, Jeff caught the grenade and threw it back into the police car. Randy sent his Anti-Body to attack the vehicle and caused them to drive their car off the road. When Randy tried to assist the wreck, Jeff pointed out the three of them were their enemies and if they helped them, they'd try to recapture them for the Clinic. The rest of the group agreed with Jeff. As Stephanie wanted to see her family, Dave and Jeff accompanied her to her home in Sheboygan. However, Stephanie's husband Chuck telephoned the Clinic who sent Bloodhound, Shrapnel and Vice Versa to the house. Vice Versa ambushed Jeff and fired two tranquilizer darts at him but he caught both in his hands. Now aware of Vice Versa's power, Jeff pretended to throw the darts back at her when he was actually throwing them backwards. Because Vice Versa instinctively used her parability to reverse their direction, the darts flew into her chest, knocking her out. Jeff, Dave and Stephanie fled Sheboygan.

(D.P.7 I#4) - On October 25, 1986, Jeff stole food from a family picnic to feed himself. Returning to the mobile home he got into an argument with Scuzz after making fun of Scuzz's odor but Lenore broke up the quarrel. Later, Lenore used her parability to reduce Jeff's shaking so he could join Scuzz, Charlotte and Randy at a restaurant. Over dinner, they discussed Dr. Semple and wondered if she were aware of the Clinic's secret purposes. After dinner, Lenore used her parability on Jeff to put him to sleep; it took 30 seconds of exposure to Lenore's light to tranquilize him. The next day they learned Dave was arrested by a posse who accused him of being "the Wompus," an urban legend of a wild man who mutilated cattle. Jeff and the others tried to clear Dave's name but their investigations led nowhere so they decided to fake a cattle mutilation. At night, Lenore used her parability to tranquilize a cow then Jeff, garbed in a bear rug, appeared to the cow's owner as "the Wompus," running too fast to be hit by the farmer's shotgun. However, while leaving the farm Jeff stumbled across the actual cattle mutilators, a gang of college students. One of them threw his knife at Jeff but Jeff easily caught the blade. Again posing as "the Wompus," Jeff frightened them into confessing what they'd done to the authorities, securing Dave's release.

(Untold Tales of the Marvel Universe: D.P.7 I#1) - In late October, 1986, the seven friends helped break up a fight at the Screaming Eagle bar outside of Keshena, Wisconsin but the owner was frightened by their parabilities and told them to leave. Outside, they met Keso, who invited them to stay on the Menominee reservation nearby. Keso revealed he and his sister Seka were paranormals, Keso having the parability to communicate with spirits of the dead and Seka having the parability to raise the dead. Seka had turned against the tribe and used the dead to assault them. Keso asked the seven friends to assist him in confronting his sister. The seven agreed and fought Seka's reanimated corpses. Jeff wielded two hatchets at superhuman speeds to smash some of the corpses apart. Randy ultimately halted Seka by using his Anti-Body to jar her out of her rage. The Menominee thanked the seven for their help and they departed the reservation in peace.

(Kickers, Inc. I#5) - On November 2, 1986, Stephanie learned her son had asked Kickers, Inc. to help her and she convinced the others to meet with them. The Kickers tried to help them but when the four male Kickers confronted the Clinic's staff, the Clinic's director, Philip Nolan Voigt and his assistant Reinforcer altered the Kickers' minds so they would see the seven paranormals as threats who needed to be in the Clinic's care. The Kickers attacked Jeff, Dave, Randy and Scuzz. Jeff easily knocked out Thomas "Suicide" Smythe. Although the Kickers were soundly beaten, Jeff and the others realized the Clinic were bound to have followed the Kickers to their location, forcing the seven friends to board Dave's mobile home and flee.

(D.P.7 I#5) - On November 7, 1986, Jeff used a payphone to call his mother and she suggested he consider seeing an exorcist to determine if his parability was due to demonic possession. Jeff convened a meeting with the others in the mobile home and tabled his mother's suggestion with them. The others started to debate their own beliefs in the supernatural. When Randy suggested their parabilities came from the White Event and Lenore observed all their parabilities manifested after it happened, Jeff scoffed, "So? They all came out after Ronald Reagan was re-elected, too. Is he responsible, maybe?" When Dave suggested it could be a trap, noting Kickers, Inc. had betrayed them, Jeff insisted they should try because he was tired of constantly eating large meals and being separated from his family. When Scuzz was asked to weigh in he complained about them wanting to remove their parabilities and that they hadn't been using the aliases he'd given them. Jeff replied he'd simply forgotten. Scuzz decided to quit the group. When Jeff, Dave and Randy tried to stop him it erupted into a fight but finally they permitted Scuzz to leave. Jeff gave Scuzz a paper with his mother's telephone number in case he needed to get in touch with them again but once Jeff left him, Scuzz deliberately destroyed the paper.

    That evening, Stephanie gathered the other remaining five and led them in prayer, begging God for help and realease from their paranormalities. The next day they met Jeff's mother, Thelma; Lenore used her parability to reduce Jeff's shaking so he could hug Thelma. Thelma brought them to the exoricst, Rev. Armand Koehn. The six paranormals demonstrated their parabilities to Rev. Koehn and although he wasn't certain whether they were possessed by demons he agreed to perform an exorcism and explained what the exorcism would involve. When the exorcism began, Rev. Koehn started praying for each of them but when he touched Randy his Anti-Body emerged and transmitted its memories to him. Realizing the Anti-Body wasn't evil, Rev. Koehn determined they weren't possessed by demons so an exorcism wouldn't help them.

(D.P.7 I#6) - On November 13, 1986, the remaining six in the group decided to split up. Dave traded in his mobile home to his uncle, who generously gave him a Winnebago. Dave, Stephanie and Lenore took the Winnebago to reunite Stephanie with her children while Randy, Jeff and Charlotte kept the truck and went looking for Scuzz. The two groups promised to meet up again within a week.

(D.P.7 I#7) - On December 4, 1986, while Randy was talking to a man Scuzz had wounded, Jeff went to telephone his family, leaving Charlotte alone in the truck. A mercenary hired by the Clinic ambushed Charlotte and prepared to send her back to the Clinic. When Jeff realized she was gone he blamed himself for leaving her alone.

(D.P.7 I#8) - On December 5, 1986, Randy and Jeff were unable to find Charlotte and drove to a gas station to get Jeff more food. A team of mercenaries ambushed them at the gas station and shot out the truck's tires. When Jeff did a fast reconnaissance of the area and saw armed men nearby he realized they were about to be attacked and grabbed Randy, attempting to run across country. However, Jeff couldn't run as fast while carrying Randy and Randy insisted he let him go. Jeff used his speed to knock out most of the mercenaries but as he hadn't eaten, the effort left him weakened enough that a final mercenary shot him with a dart.

(D.P.7 I#10) - On December 9, 1986, Jeff, Scuzz, Randy, Lenore, Charlotte and Stephanie were all back at the Clinic, where Regulator, Reinforcer and Receptor were combining their parabilities to rewrite their memories of the last few months and render them easier to manage when they were awakened.

(D.P.7 I#11) - Jeff lay on a gurney in the treatment room as Regulator, Reinforcer and Receptor continued their work.

(D.P.7 I#12) - Jeff, Charlotte, Lenore and Scuzz completed their sessions with Regulator, Reinforcer and Receptor and were returned to Therapy Group C, under Dr. Semple's supervision. Weakened from weeks in hospital beds, all four needed wheelchairs as Dr. Semple took them through "reorientation." The four tried to recall the events that led to them leaving the Clinic as their new memories omitted all the events that implicated the Clinic. Randy's Anti-Body was blamed for influencing the others to leave the Clinic and Jeff recalled with disgust how often he'd been forced to steal food to survive. When Dave and Randy revived, neither one under the Clinic's control, they were shocked to discover how their friends' memories had been altered but resolved they couldn't force them to leave the Clinic. Randy and Dave wound up in a fight with Philip Nolan Voigt that ended with Voigt's seeming destruction.

(D.P.7 I#13) - Jeff, Charlotte, Scuzz and Lenore went to the gym for physical therapy and were pleasantly surprised when Dave and Randy came to join them. When therapy was over, Dave and Randy told the others they were staying and asked them to help find out what had happened to Stephanie to place her in a coma.

(D.P.7 I#14) - With the Clinic now under the leadership of Tanis Newhouse, many patients were given staff positions to help make up for shortfalls. On July 19, 1987, Jeff shared the list of assignments with Charlotte and when he asked her to thank him, she kissed him on his cheek. Jeff teased that she was saving her "real kisses" for Randy. Jeff was approached by Indigo, who was forming a new group at the Clinic comprised of Black patients she called the Black Powers. Jeff refused to join the Black Powers. When Therapy Group C met in the cafeteria the next day, Charlotte announced she was leaving them to join the Black Powers. Later that day, the Black Powers (sans Charlotte) attacked Randy in the gym; Jeff came to Randy's defense, increasing the rift between he and the other Black patients.

(D.P.7 I#15) - After being alienated by the Black Powers, Jeff started locking the door to his quarters. Lenore came by one night to use her light to help him sleep. Jeff didn't realize Lenore's own vitality and youthfulness was increasing due to the energy she habitually took from him. The next day, Jeff worked in the Clinic's cafeteria. Scuzz made light of Jeff's job, saying putting him in the kitchen was like putting "a fox in charge of a henhouse." Jeff explained the Clinic had a nutritionist working on his eating problem and he'd taken to consuming high protein milkshakes. That night, Lenore told Jeff she'd have to stop putting him to sleep with her parability because of a "bad effect" his energy was having on her.

(Psi-Force I#15) - On September 16, 1987, Jeff brought food to Tanis Newhouse's office while she and Juris Ziegler were meeting with Michael Crawley, a new arrival at the Clinic. Tanis ordered Jeff out until they'd finished assessing Michael's parability. Michael later fled the Clinic and nearly became manipulated into joining Bill and Glenn's criminal gang but Randy, Jeff and Scuzz pursued him and helped expose Bill and Glenn. Michael came back to the Clinic with them.

(D.P.7 I#16) - Jeff saw a television report about the super hero Star Brand and excitedly shared the news with Randy, enthused to see someone who was clearly a paranormal using their parabilities to perform good deeds.

(Justice II#16) - After Charlotte had a nightmare about John Tensen, "the Justice Killer," Jeff helped console her then assisted her in an investigation of the recent murders Tensen had committed. Jeff told Dave and Randy that Tensen was apparently a paranormal who murdered other paranormals and they should beware of him.

(D.P.7 I#17) - Jeff telephoned his mother and heard his Uncle Ray was saving newspaper clippings about the Star Brand. His mother mentioned she and Jeff's siblings were going to visit Ray in Pittsburgh. Jeff ended his phone call when he saw Mothball tormenting Mutator. Jeff interceded and drove off Mothball; Mutator, who was shunned by the other patients due to his appearance, was truly grateful to Jeff for being nice to him. As Charlotte had left the Black Powers, Jeff asked her to rejoin their therapy group but she refused unless Randy apologized to her. The next day director Newhouse held an assembly for all the patients and ordered them to break up their special interest groups and return to their original therapy groups. This set off a riot during which Bazooka and Indigo attempted to murder Freefall and Tangler (who had killed two of the Black Powers the previous day). Jeff tried to reduce the amount of violence that was unleashed but it finally stopped when Lenore entered and used her body's light to paralyze everyone in the room, including Jeff.

(D.P.7 I#18) - On December 23, 1987, Jeff saw on the news that Pittsburgh had been destroyed. Distraught, he fled the Clinic on foot, running towards the remains of Pittsburgh (now called "the Pitt").

(D.P.7 I#19) - Jeff reached the Pitt. Distraught, he ran around the edge of destruction, then began descending into the Pitt, running around the vast crater created when the city was destroyed and down towards where the Pitt was filled with lava. Eventually Dave Landers came in search of Jeff and fell down the side of the Pitt, where he saw Jeff and stopped him by holding out his arm in Jeff's path, which cracked Jeff's ribs. Jeff told Dave everyone he loved was in the Pitt and he belonged with them. Dave refused to let Jeff kill himself and tried to carry him back up the side of the Pitt but lost his grip and fell upon a rock that was slowing sinking into the lava. At the last moment they were both saved by Jenny Swensen, piloting the Spitfire armor.

(D.P.7 I#20) - Jeff was noticably thin and no longer shaking as the group carried him to the basement of a wrecked home. Randy forced Jeff to eat, as Jeff continued to call weakly for his mother. Jeff continued to recuperate in the basement when the area was surrounded by U.S. Army soldiers, who took custody of Jeff and his friends.

(D.P.7 I#21) - On January 3, 1988, Jeff and Dave awakened in a U.S. Army infirmary alongside Pit Bull, a paranormal scavenger whom Dave had fought before. They were greeted by Jack Magniconte, formerly of Kickers, Inc. and now a member of the U.S. Army. Magniconte encouraged both men to enlist in the Army, revealing to them that in the past few days the draft had been reinstituted. Magniconte revealed he was a paranormal like them and the Army had made him field commander of the first Paranormal Platoon. Jeff agreed to enlist, eager to learn whether a foreign power's paranormals were responsible for killing his family.

(D.P.7 I#22/The Draft) - On April 11, 1988, Jeff received a psychiatric evaluation from Lt. Keith Remsen (alias Nightmask). Jeff was having recurring dreams of his mother and siblings tied to a bomb; when Jeff tried to run and free them he would become too fat to move, watching helplessly as the bomb went off. Remsen empathized with Jeff and described how his own parents died in a bomb but Jeff observed that Remsen knew he couldn't have saved them but Jeff would never know for certain. As Jeff, Dave and Pit Bull had recuperated, Jack Magniconte had them sent to Fort Benning, Georgia, where other paranormals were being sent for training. Jeff met his drill instructor, Sgt. Haldeman and discovered Edward Zentner - who as Bloodhound had hunted Jeff and the others 2 years earlier - was one of their officers. The other recruits included Chris Barret ("Metallurgist"), Garth Mengeling ("Gridlock"), Harly Mook ("Blow Out") and Bazooka of the Clinic. Jeff was sent to the Army barbers, who had difficulty shaving his head because of his shaking. Randy offered to share a bunkbed with Jeff in the barracks. Jeff said Randy wouldn't want to share a bunk with him because of his shaking but Randy insisted "it'll be like one of those motion massage beds." Dave learned from Bazooka that the Clinic had been shut down and informed Randy and Jeff. The next day, Sgt. Haldeman tested the paranornmals on the obstacle course and Jeff ran through twice, telling Haldeman he hadn't been told he couldn't do that. Jeff's nightmares continued to recur and he was filled with recriminations and self-hatred. One day, Jeff found Pit Bull had provoked Harly Mook into a fight, not realizing Harly had the parability to teleport, causing an explosion in the air he left behind. Jeff saved Pit Bull's life; when he asked why Jeff saved him, Jeff smiled and answered, "Because I could." The next time Jeff had his nightmare he went to save his family's lives but his mother encouraged him to let go of them, telling him he was needed and to "run faster than any man has run before." Jeff finally overcame his feelings of guilt. Some time later, Jeff and other recruits were watching a television address by President Reagan when Harly Mook attempted to assassinate him by teleporting next to him; however, Reagan survived the blast, inadvertently revealing on live television that he too was a paranormal.

(D.P.7 I#23/Psi-Force I#23) - On April 21, 1988, Jeff was matched against fellow recruit Thomas Boyd, who leeched some of Jeff's speed in order to defeat him. Pit Bull, who had declared himself Jeff's "buddy," took a turn fighting Boyd for his friend. When Boyd's fellow members of Psi-Force broke into Fort Benning to break out Boyd, Jeff and the other paranormal recruits fought them but they escaped with Boyd.

(Psi-Force I#27/2) - After Tyrone Jessup of Psi-Force was assigned to the Paranormal Platoon, his body was weak and atrophied because he had spent too much time inhabiting his astral form rather than his physical body. Pit Bull and Bazooka ganged up on Tyrone to torment him but Jeff, Garth, Chris and Sgt. Haldeman intervened. Jeff brought Tyrone for a meeting with Major Zentner.

(Psi-Force I#29/2) - On Octber 23, 1988, Jeff participated in a training exercise as he and the rest of the Paranormal Platoon tested their parabilities against Tyrone, who had fully recovered. Jeff managed to land one punch on Tyrone before Tyrone used his psychic parability to strike Jeff with electromagnetic energy.

(The War I#1) - When the telepath Major Kathi Blizzard was attached to the Paranormal Platoon was the new superior officer, Jeff delivered a message to Jack Magniconte to report to her. Major Blizzard had a formal introduction to the Paranormal Platoon, which included Jeff, Magniconte, Sgt. Haldeman, Chris, Garth, Pit Bull, Shooter, Pretty Boy, Norad, Troll and Mapper. Blizzard informed them they were going on a mission in four days authorized a pass for the entire platoon. Jeff went to a bar and chatted with Chris and Garth about Blizzard; Jeff told them she reminded him of his sister. When Garth played a prank on Norad and caused him to drop a bowl of pretzels, Jeff caught the pretzels before they could hit the ground. When the time for the mission arrived, Jeff was the only member of the Platoon who didn't look back while boarding their aircraft, hoping he would finally get revenge on the people who killed his family.

(The War I#2) - While crossing the Atlantic Ocean, Major Blizzard showed the platoon images of a Mozambican paranormal who claimed responsibility for destroying Pittsburgh. They arrived in South Africa where they were greeted by Colonel Oort but Pit Bull noticed Oort refused to shake hands with Jeff, suggesting Oort was a staunch racist. Oort directed the Paranormal Platoon to a camp across the border in Mozambique which would supposedly leade them to the paranormal responsible for the attack. Major Blizzard had remained behind in the South African camp and discovered the supposed Mozambican terrorist (Casey) was already a prisoner of the South Africans. Major Blizzard alerted the others and Jeff ran back to the camp in an attempt to prevent the South Africans from launching nuclear missiles but Jeff arrived too late to prevent the launch.

(The War I#3) - The South Africans imprisoned Major Blizzard and Jeff in the same barbed wire enclosure as Casey. Jeff fell into a deep coma, once again blaming himself for failing others (unaware the Star Brand had stopped the missiles from killing anyone). Major Blizzard used her telepathy to draw Jeff out of his trauma and back to consciousness.

(The War I#4) - As the Paranormal Platoon returned to the South African camp - with a rebel army from Mozambique in hot pursuit - Jeff, Major Blizzard and Casey broke out of the enclosure. As the pilots of their plane were under guard by the South Africans, Jeff broke them out, using his superhuman speed to smash the lock on their door. Jeff and Major Blizzard got their plane ready so the Platoon could escape. However, Colonel Oort boarded the plane and threatened to shoot Major Blizzard. Jeff saved her but he was shot in the process, while Casey killed Oort. Sgt. Haldeman took care of Jeff as they flew back to the United States.

(Quasar I#31 (fb) - BTS) - With the war ended, Jeff left the army and located his old friends from the Clinic, who had moved to Manhattan. Alongside his army buddy Chris, Jeff took up living with his friends in Manhattan.

(Quasar I#31) - In 1992, the hero Quasar from Earth-616 became stranded in the Omniverse and landed in Manhattan. Jeff brought Stephanie so she could tend Quasar's injuries. When Quasar claimed to be from another dimension, Jeff concluded he was insane. Upon realizing he couldn't return to his own reality, Quasar asked Jeff and his friends for help. When Jeff and Captain Manhattan told Quasar about the Star Band, he concluded its wielder might have the power to return him to his own reality. Taking a reading of paranormal energy from Jeff and the others, Quasar left to find the Star Brand.

Secret Wars happened.

(Avengers VI#0) - With his own Earth believed destroyed, Jeff found himself on Earth-616. He banded together with other heroes whose home realities had been destroyed during the "incurions", joining Nighthawk, Hyperion, Doctor Spectrum and Power Princess as the Squadron Supreme. Jeff assumed Blur as his codename. Nighthawk believed the Squadron Supreme had a responsbility to prevent Earth-616 from being destroyed as their worlds had been and to avenge their worlds by striking back against those who let the incurions happen. The team fought a band of Skrulls and considered whether they should strike against the Avengers.

(Squadron Supreme IV#1) - With the team's training complete, Nighthawk led them in an attack on Atlantis for revenge on the Sub-Mariner, who was one of those responsible for the incursions being hastened. Blur used his superhuman speed to fight the Sub-Mariner and ultimately Hyperion slew Namor. Blur joined the Squadron Supreme in a televised address in which Nighthawk announced their intention to defend the planet.

(Squadron Supreme IV#2) - Jeff took a moment to relax in the Squadron's home bsae and conferred with Dr. Spectrum about their new home. Jeff was amazed by all the "monsters" and other unusual sights that weren't common on his world. Later, Dr. Spectrum brought him to the surface and he went running, exploring the world.

(Squadron Supreme IV#3) - Jeff ran to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and enjoyed seeing the city on Earth-616 was intact. When Nighthawk was attacked by the Avengers Unity Squad in retaliation for their assault on Atlantis, Blur joined the fight and engaged fellow speedster Quicksilver in combat. Nighthawk prepared a tripwire made with an invisible polymer and Blur led Quicksilver into it, tripping him then beating him. Just as Jim Hammond of S.H.I.E.L.D. prepared to fight the Squadron Supreme, the team was summoned by Thundra and Tyndall to help them in the other-dimensional Weirdworld.

(Squadron Supreme IV#4-5) - The Squadron Supreme discovered Weirdworld had been conquered by Doctor Druid, who had placed nearly all of the residents under his thrall. He had also forged an alliance with Modred the Mystic and with Power Princess, who revealed her true identity was Warrior Woman and turned against the rest of the Squadron. Blur questioned Nighthawk's tactics when he made him use lethal force against those enthralled by Druid, as Blur noted they weren't to blame for their actions. Aided by Skull the Slayer, the Squadron triumphed over Dr. Druid and returned to Earth-616.

(Squadron Supreme IV#6) - The Squadron Supreme went on a variety of assignments around the world, attacking whaling ships off the coast of Japan and thwarting a Maggia plot that held the city of Milan for ransom. They also stopped a weapons sale between a Dire Wraith and the Badoon and destroyed an illegal Roxxon pipeline in the Antarctic.

(Thunderbolts IV#4) - Fearing the Thunderbolts posed a danger to the planet, Nighthawk led the Squadron Supreme (whose ranks now included Thundra) against them and invaded their base but the fight ended when the sentient Cosmic Cube Kobik used her power to teleport the Thunderbolts to a new base.

(Squadron Supreme IV#8) - Nighthawk briefed Blur and the others about the Myriad, a constorium of extraterrestrials whom he believed were behind the recent extraterrestrial incidents they'd been investigating.

(Amazing Spider-Man IV#15) - Alongside many other heroes, the Squadron Supreme responded to the threat of the poweful being Regent and forced him to surrender.

(Squadron Supreme IV#10) - Nighthawk ordered the Squadron Supreme to shut down Project: Portal, a hadron collider built in Germany's Black Forest. The Blue Marvel defended the project and when Nighthawk realized Blue Marvel had foreknowledge of their arrival he cancelled the mission and they retreated. The other members of the Squdron conferred amongst each other and admitted they had misgivings about Nighthawk's leadership as he seemed to keep pitting them against other super heroes. Their discussion was interrupted by the arrival of Power Princess, the woman whom Warrior Woman had impersonated. Power Princess told the Squadron Warrior Woman had conquered Alambra, was allied with the Myriad and was planning to resurrect the Sub-Mariner. Power Princess led the Squadron to the Baxter Building, where Warrior Woman sought to steal the Fantastic Four's time machine.

(Squadron Supreme IV#11) - When the Squadron Supreme arrived, Warrior Woman's ally Modred cast a spell to make Spider-Man mistake the Squadron for them. Once Spider-Man's head cleared he continued to fight the Squadron, since he thought Warrior Woman was one of their members. Blur, Thundra and Doctor Spectrum took care of Spider-Man while Hyperion and Power Princess pursued Warrior Woman and Modred. Blur told Spider-Man he actually admired him and didn't want to fight him. When Thundra knocked out Spider-Man, Jim Hammond and S.H.I.E.L.D. arrived to arrest the Squadron. Blur tried to evade S.H.I.E.L.D. but Spider-Man awoke and webbed Blur's foot to the ground, giving S.H.I.E.L.D. an opportunity to hit him with an energy cannon.

(Squadron Supreme IV#12) - S.H.I.E.L.D. placed Blur and Thundra into manacles and Hammond attempted to interrogate them. Blur said it was an honor to meet Hammond, which irritated him as Blur had participated in executing his old friend Namor.

(Squadron Supreme IV#13) - Hammond placed Blur and Thundra into cells aboard a S.H.I.E.L.D. vessel as Blur tried to reason with Hammond, expressing how much he enjoyed Earth-616.

(Squadron Supreme IV#14) - Nighthawk broke into the vessel and released Thundra and Blur from their cells. When Nighthawk used a device on Hammond that rendered him comatose, Blur was upset. Suddenly, the Sub-Mariner burst into the vessel, having been resurrected by Dr. Spectrum and brought to the present using the Fantastic Four's time machine. As the rest of the Squadron Supreme chose to take the opportunity to slip away, Blur refused to leave the comatose Hammond, saying he no longer believed the Squadron were doing good. Blur elected to take his chances with S.H.I.E.L.D. rather than evade the law. Hammond soon revived, although his powers had been altered.

(Squadron Supreme IV#15 (fb)) - To make amends for his actions as one of the Squadron Supreme and prove himself a hero, Jeff agreed to join S.H.I.E.L.D. and was assigned to Camp Hammond in Stamford, Connecticut with Jim Hammond as his superior officer. At the same time, the Squadon Supreme disbanded.

    Jeff received a Marvel Handbook-style profile in D.P.7 I#19.

    "D.P.7" was the name of the series the characters from Therapy Group C appeared in but their informal group never went by that name.

    Jeff appeared in D.P.7 I#9 only as a character in Randy O'Brien's mind while he was being reconditioned by Receptor and Reinforcer.

    Jeff's Earth-15731 counterpart appeared in Exiles I#72.

    The Official Timeline of the New Universe mistakenly identified Jeff's workplace as a McDonald's.

    Jeff sure didn't look to be in his late 50s when he reappeared in Squadron Supreme, which suggests that after the New Universe's Earth was brought into Earth-616's reality in Starblast I#4 (1994) it started obeying the rules of 616's sliding timeline - so Jeff has probably remained in his early-mid 30s.

    Maybe the most disappointing thing about Jeff's depiction in Squadron Supreme is that he wasn't blurry. That's like, the single most fundamental thing about his appearance and the thing that made him distinctive from every other super-speedster on Earth-616. Somehow by leaving the "mundane" New Universe he became more mundane.

THELMA WALTERS

Thelma Walters was Jeff, Dennis and Michele's mother. While Jeff was a fugitive from the Clinic he started making regular telephone calls to Thelma from a payphone. Thelma considered the idea that Jeff's parability might be the cause of demonic possession and encouraged him and his friends to visit the exorcist Rev. Armand Koehn. However, Rev. Koehn ultimately realized the weren't demon-possessed. Jeff used Thelma's telephone number as a means for the members of his group to leave messages for each other. Unfortunately, on December 23, 1987, Thelma, Dennis and Michele were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to spend Christmas with family. When Ken Connell accidentally caused an explosion that destroyed the city, Thelma, Dennis and Michele were among those killed. Jeff was distraught by their deaths and took months coming to terms with their passing.
