Properties: The Pitt was initially the result of the atomization of land, air, property and organisms within a 25' mile spherical radius centered 10 miles above the city of Pittsburgh.

All of the atomized matter, as well as the residual energies following the Star Brand massive release, settled into the bottom of the resultant Pitt, although dark clouds and atomized airborn debris obscurred vistualization of the Pitt.

The edges of the Pitt were initially smooth, like polished glass, fused by the unleashed energies.

Massive amounts of water from rivers entering into the region swiftly poured into the Pitt, and -- due to rupture of tectonic plates, a large volcano soon after pushed up from the middle of the Pitt.

The contents of the Pitt were impregnated with Star Brand energies and the combined materials of everything atomized.

Material known as "Pitt Juice," within the fluid at its bottom and periodically erupting from solid material like geysers, tended to have mutagenic effects on the people and animals exposed to them.

Animals and/or people were mutated into monstrous and often savage forms, some people gained superhuman forms and abilities, and some paranormals were further affected by "Pitt Juice" exposure.

The volcano periodically spewed magma, molten rock, which poured down its edges via gravity and threatened to incinerate anyone or anything it touched.

The volcanic eruption and the magma it spewed progressively decreased the depth of the Pitt.

The region between the edges of the Pitt and the volcano came to be known as the Ditch.

History:

.

pitt-148611-pittsburgh-connellpitt-148611-pittsburgh-transfer(Justice#18 (fb) - BTS) <December 21, 1987>- Glen Baker, a paranormal able to see up to 48 hours in the future and living in the relative vicinity of Pittsburgh, foresaw the "Justice Killer" (John Tensen) coming for him.

That evening, Baker saw what he believed to be the end of the world, after which his hair turned white. However, confident that no one would believe him, Baker apparently told no one.

(Marvel Graphic Novel: The Pitt#1) <December 22, 1987 4:10 PM EST> - Nelson Kohler, aka the Witness, a phantasmal being who sensed paranormal manifestations and who was somewhere in Pittsburgh at the time, felt agony and was drawn toward Pittsburgh.

(The Star Brand#12 - BTS) - Seeking to rid himself of the Star Brand, Ken Connell took his friend Myron Feldman's advice to transfer the energies into an inanimate object.

Both men were aware that the being known as the Old Man had previously attempted to transfer the Star Brand power into an asteroid, and that the energies released had resulted in the "White Event," which had empowered their Earth's paranormals.

They were also aware that 90% of the power could be expelled thusly and that Ken could exhaust his remaining 10% protecting himself from the energy release.

Myron gave Ken a dumbbell and advised him to fly to the dark side of the moon to ensure that no one would be affected by the energies the transfer would unleash.

Fearing being left helpless on the moon and wanting be able to get to a hospital quickly if needed, Connell instead flew 10 miles into the air.

pitt-148611-pittsburgh-blast

(The Star Brand#12 / Marvel Graphic Novel: The Pitt#1) <December 22, 1987 6:06 PM EST (see comments)> - - Concentrating his powers to focus and contain the blast, Connell initiated the transfer, and the resultant energies unleashed "vaporized" (or perhaps atomized) everything (except Connell himself) within a 25 mile radius (see comments) in all directions, including the upper atmosphere/ozone layer).

(Marvel Graphic Novel: The Pitt#1) - Kohler witnessed as Connell's form was carried away, while everything and everyone in the region surrounding the vaporized region was pulled toward the point of origin to replace the resultant vacuum.

pitt-148611-pittsburgh-pitt-initial(Marvel Graphic Novel: The Pitt#1 (fb) - BTS) - Over a million people perished in the blast, and hundreds of towns and villages were destroyed.

Tectonic plates were ruptured, and a hotbed of volcanic activity was left behind.

The waters of the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers poured into the crater in a spectacular waterfall, combining with the seemingly inert material left behind from the destroyed matter and the Star Brand energy).

(Marvel Graphic Novel: The Pitt#1 (fb) - BTS) -  <6:08 PM> - 26 miles away from the destroyed region, the car transporting Janey, Leonard, Marge & Timmy Robinson (confirm last name) was pulled into the Pitt, arriving 8 minutes later.

(Justice#18 - BTS) - Having sensed Glen Baker's power and his having used it only for personal gain, Justice confronted him and stated his purpose. Unconcerned, Baker related his recent visions. Tensen told Baker that if he had truly foreseen armageddon, he could make sure Baker was not there for it. Baker told Justice he did not think Justice would have the time, and immediately afterward they saw and felt the effects of the destruction (see comments)

(Justice#18 - BTS) - A nearby dog was killed by the sound of the implosion, and Justice tried to catch a young girl who was pulled through the air by force of the air rushing to fill the vacuum, but the girl's coat ripped, and she continued to fly toward the source of the vacuum. Meanwhile, Baker wrapped the chains from a swingset around his neck, allowing the force at which he was subsequently pulled to break his neck, apparently killing him.

<6:17 PM> - As those at the Griffis Air Force Base in New York registered that Pittsburgh had been turned into a crater, 50 miles across, Henderson contacted the Chief of Staff.

<6:51 PM> - Soldiers brought Col. MacIntrye Browning -- who had felt the vibration four minutes earlier -- from Washington, D.C., to lead the investigation.

<9:01 PM> - Browning's jet (aka "Close-Up") arrived over the site and found no one from Pittsburgh within radio signal.

After a few passes to investigate the vapor-covered crater, he contacted "Tin Lizzie," instructing Jenny Swenson to use her MAX suit to investigate as Spitfire.

(Justice#18 - BTS) - Having kept himself on the ground with a force field, Justice released it to catch an infant in a carseat, after which he formed a field around the two of them as they were pulled toward the source of the vacuum.

After what seemed like hours, the force of the wind faded, and they crashed to the ground.

(Justice#18 (fb) - BTS) - Justice and the baby were found by local senior couple Willie and Edna, who brought them back to their house, 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. They called the police, who were too busy to respond/investigate.

<10:02 PM - 2:00 AM, December 23> - Kohler investigated the crater, at the bottom seemingly encountering the ghosts of those who died in the destruction; he subsequently resolved that this had been a delusion caused by his difficulty in processing the mass destruction.pitt-148611-pittsburgh-pitt-smoking crater

<10:11 PM> - 15 miles from the edge of the crater, MacIntyre had the field soldiers establish a perimeter, with only security G-7 passing beyond that point; with this unprecedented event, MacIntyre disregarded the lack of martial law, ordering the shooting of any trying to pass that point.

<11:02 PM> - Spitfire flew the 15 miles to the depth of the crater, recording her findings and saving the Robinson family from beneath the water covering the bottom, although both she and they were exposed to the material later referred to as Pitt juice (the Star Brand energy-infused residue from the destruction).

They reached the surface at 1:04 AM.

<December 23, 1:29 - 1:43 AM> - Swenson related her findings to MacIntrye, and he ordered the base camp to be sealed up tightly, with no signals going in or out unless they were through him. After MacIntyre contacted the Air Force base in Cheyenne Mountain, he was given authority "you can take this as from the commander-in-chief...you have maxium authority in this. Do anything you deem necessary to keep that area sealed."

When Smitty and his reporter associate flew a helicopter over the crater, they repeatedly refused commands to follow them back to a holding area. Ultimately, Browning authorized the helicopter to be shot down, which it was.

<3:18 AM> - After Swenson showed MacIntyre her MAX armor's analysis of the entire zone of destruction, he instructed her to return to the crater to gather more data. When she suggested that everything within the crater was dead and that she could save lives by exploring the perimeter, he forbade it, resulting in her departing with her armor.

<4:21 AM> - Spitfire observed Kohler within the crater, but he sank below the water to avoid her. Kohler resolved to find Connell (not that he knew his name) and make him pay in order to avenge Pittsburgh.

<4:57 AM> - Having discovered the existence of the Pittsburgh crater, Soviet authorities sent word to US news programs, who reported the information over their television network.

<Shortly after 6:06 AM> - Col. Browning wrote his report, referring to the event as the "Pittsburgh Effect" and the resultant site as the "Pitt" (to which he had heard it ghoulishly referred). He speculated that the "super hero" who had showed up in Pittsburgh as likely involved.

.
(D.P.7#21 (fb) - BTS) - Several foreign terrorists groups claimed credit for the the devastation in Pittsburgh.
.
pitt-pittsburgh-148611-dp718-smooth_wall(Justice#18 - BTS) <December 23 daytime> - Justice awakened, and he, Willie & Edna watched news reporting the entire Pittsburgh region to be obscured by huge clouds of steam with a complete information clampdown. Reporters noted that winds had laid waste to the area within five miles of Pittsburgh and that houses had been leveled and thousands had been killed. After Edna noted that their daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren (had) lived in Pittsburgh, he traveled to investigate while they watched the young boy he had brought with them.

(D.P. 7#18 (fb) - BTS) - While the destruction was initially suspected to be the result of a nuclear explosion, the lack of radiation levels beyond normal background levels ruled this out.

(Justice#18 - BTS) - Approximately 3 miles from Pittsburgh, Justice encountered and fought his way to get past soldiers at a barricade until Terrence Updike of the National Security Council gave him clearance to continue.

(Justice#18 (fb) - BTS) - Justice continued, using his sword arm to slice through tons of debris during the last mile, at least.

(Justice#18) - Arriving at the sheer drop at its edge, Justice used shields to lift himself into the air, and he observed the massive crater that would become known as the Pitt.

(Justice#18 - BTS) - Returning to Willie and Edna's home, he told them that their family were gone, but he convinced them to foster and potentially adopt the young boy he had brought with him, who was deaf from the explosion.

(D.P. 7#18 (fb) - BTS) <December 23rd, 9:03 pm> - Hearing of the destruction in Pittsburgh, the superhumanly swift Jeff Walters (aka Blur) rushed out of the Clinic for Paranormal Research in Western Wisconsin, calling out his mother's name as he raced toward Pittsburgh.

(D.P. 7#19 (fb) - BTS) - Jeff raced across the outer surface of the Pitt in a desperate effort to find his family, who had traveled to Pittsburgh for Christmas to be with his aunt and uncle who lived there.

(D.P. 7#18 - BTS) - Having witnessed this, the periodically mutating George Mullaney (aka Mutator) subsquently shared this information with other residents at the Clinic, notably the super-strong Charlotte Beck (aka Friction), Dave Landers (aka Mastodon), Randy O'Brien (who created psycho-plasm versions (aka Antibodies) of his own form) and Merriam Sorenson (aka Sponge).

Joined by Lenore Fenzl (aka Twilight), the six took Landers' RV toward Pittsburgh.

As they got closer to Pittsburgh, they found increasing traffic 60 miles from the city. After Lenore used her luminsecent energy to sedate a pair of guards so they could crash a roadblock.
pitt-pittsburgh-148611-dp718-bottom

In an effort to be less conspicuous, they subsequently hid the RV and proceeded on foot. As this became tiresome, they had Charlotte and Merriam distract a pair of soldiers in a transport truck, and Merriam dehydrated them sufficiently to cause them to pass out.

They took the truck further, with George smashing a security guard unconscious at a checkpoint. However, they soon after found debris blocking the road. Dave cleared enough to get them a mile in two hours, after which they proceeded on foot again.

(D.P. 7#18) - As they got closer, gas obscurred visibility, and they fell off the edge of  roof of a building into the Pitt.

(D.P. 7#19) - The group slid down the smooth surface of the Pitt until Charlotte created friction to hold them in place. Randy used his Antibodies to fly the others to safety, but one of them encountered Spitfire on the surface. As Dave weighed weighed 525 lbs., the three antibodies could not support his weight.

As the others returned to the surface, seeking to find the missing Antibody, Zeppo, Dave eventually lost his grip when the rock split, and he slid down to the bottom of the Pitt.

Stopping at an outcropping near the "lake" at the bottom, Dave observed Jeff repeatedly zipping past. Climbing down closer to the bottom, Dave finally stopped Jeff. Strapping Jeff to his back, Dave started climbing back up to escape the magma bursts.

As he became exhausted, the rock upon which he was holding broke off, and he broke his ankle landing on fallen rock. As the rock began to sink below the surface, Spitfire picked up Dave and a pair of Antibodies carried Jeff back up to the surface.

(D.P. 7#20) - Having passed out, Dave awakened and began having hallucinations about still being at the bottom of the Pitt, and Lenore had to use her tranquilizing energies to subdue him. Jenny's MAX armor malfunctioned, and she had to leave it behind and help the group hauling the injured Dave and Jeff away from the Pitt. When they took a break, they encountered Pit Bull and his War Dogs; Jenny, Charlotte, Lenore and the Antibodies subdued the War Dogs, and Merriam awakened Dave, whose ankle Randy had splinted, and Dave took out Pit Bull.

(Justice#19 (fb) - BTS) - Libya claimed responsibility for the destruction of Pittsburgh.

(Justice#19 (fb) - BTS) - US President Ronald Reagan gave a State of the Union address, discussing the destruction of Pittsburgh, vowing that those responsible would be brought to justice and announcing his plans to have Congress restructure the Selective Service Registration system, effectively reinstituting the draft for all American men and women between the ages of 18-45 years old.

(Justice#20) - The Pitt-Aid concert was organized to benefit (presumably) any survivors on the periphery of the Pittsburgh Effect. At that concert, Justice battled Seraph before being subdued and captured by local police officers.

(Psi-Force#19 - BTS) <January 2, 1988> - As the Medusa Web pursued Anastasia Inyushin, Kathy Ling and Thomas Boyd of Psi-Force in San Diego, California, Babel (
Thame Panagitis) convinced locals that his group was there to avert a potential tragedy akin to what had happened in Pittburgh.pitt-148611-pittsburgh-sb13-precipitation-fallout

(Psi-Force#19) <January 2, 1988> - Tyrone Jessup projected his electromagnetic consciousness over the Pitt, observing the devastation.

(The Star Brand#13 - BTS) <February 29, 1988> - Ken Connell's sometime girlfriend, Maddie "Duck" Felix (who was pregnant with his child) was stopped by a guard three miles from the Pitt. Her friend Roger Price, who the director of the North Central Ohio division of the March of Dimes, was able to convince a guard to let them pass and even lend them a military vehicle due to the rough terrain. About a mile from the Pitt, their vehicle was assaulted by some sort of mobile plant, but the Starchild (a manifestation of its father, Ken Connell) destroyed the plant before tearing free from Maddie's uterus and abdomen and flying off, unwittingly slaying her in the process.

Their vehicle damaged and unable to carry Maddie, Roger and Jane buried Duck while snow (or whatever it was) fell around them. They were soon confronted by some sort of mutated dog-creature, but the Starchild sent a portion of its essence to destroy the creature and then communicate with them via Maddie's voice.

Roger and Jane Price were subsequently taken into custody by military forces for observation due to their exposure to the "Pitt Juice" (atomized Pittsburgh).

(The Star Brand#14 - BTS) - The Starchild sent its essence to visit Jane and Roger Price in the military base in which they were living. Seeking to gain understanding of some of its memories, it painfully probed Jane's mind, leading Roger to try to stop it with his cane; instinctually defending itself, the Starchild lashed out with energy that mortally wounded Roger.

Starchild subsequently returned to the military base and restored Roger to life (as his body still held the smallest spark of life), perfecting Roger's physical form in the process.

(D.P. 7#23 (fb)) - The Central Intelligence Agency began its own paranormal recruitment program.

(The Star Brand#15 (fb) - BTS) - The energies generated by the vaporization of massive amounts of matter by the energies of the Star Brand that created the Pitt also mutated some of the plant life immediately surrounding the Pitt...or perhaps the plant life developed within the resultant "Pitt Juice" that formed from the vaporized matter and energies (that was greatly expanded in volume but diluted by the water of the
Monongahela and Allegheny rivers that poured into it) and then escaped as volcanic pressure broke through the bottom fused surface of the Pitt.

(The Star Brand#15) -
A pair of soldiers in "Sector 58" encountered a biped mutate. As it approached them, they prepared to blow it up with some sort of shoulder-cannon-weapon. However, the ground shook, preventing proper aiming, and then a number of plant tendrils erupted through the ground, presumably killing both men.

Their (presumably death) screams were transmitted back to the nearby military base, which was under the direction of Colonel Browning, who ordered that no one was to enter or leave the base and that outside communication was strictly prohibited.

Sensing something alive and in pain, the Starchild traveled to and investigated the Pitt. He flew through the cloud cover and into the pit, approaching the "Pitt-juice" and noting that the material had been originally unique on Earth and perhaps in the universe, but that for months it had been diluted by waters flowing into the crater, which made it difficult for the Starchild to isolate the source of the life-energy he detected. Feeling the energy to be all around him, the Starchild risked going below the surface of the Pitt-Juice, appreciating that even his own power may not be able to resist the forces that lurked below.

Using enhanced perceptions to observe his surroundings, the Starchild appreciated that everything that had been pulled into the Pitt -- from the corpses of people and animals to automobiles and various other objects -- had been perfectly preservd within the Pitt-Juice. Finally, at the bottom of the Pitt, the Starchild observed fissures in the fused edges of the Pitt wall (caused by the volcanic pressure building beneath it) through which emerged the plant tendrils.

Just above the surface of the edge, a doctor aboard the helicopter carrying Colonel
MacIntrye Browning noted that everything within 3' of the Pitt was alive, a single gigantic life form. The doctor further added that the organism was spreading at an average of about a mile a day...in some place not at all, but in other places, it was spreading like wildfire. Browning had the pilot assault the Pitt creature, but it recovered, grabbed the helicopter and pulled it down.

As portions of the plant creature assaulted a town reportedly 100 miles from the Pitt, the Starchild confronted it and used the Star Brand power to force the creature to retreat back to the Pitt. At the Pitt's edge, the creature resisted, and when the Starchild attempted to force the creature back within the Pitt, the creature perished.

pitt-148611-pittsburgh-sb17-domes-pictures (The Star Brand#16 - BTS) - At the military base by the Pitt, Roger Price dreamed about being the super-heroic Star Brand, although this ended in tragedy.

(The Star Brand#16) - Meanwhile, with the Starchild having eliminated death, Pitt creatures proved impossible to kill and continued to advance despite being shot through the heart.

(The Star Brand#16 - BTS) - After transferring the Star Brand power into Jacob Burnley, the Star Child was convinced to allow natural death to occur. Before departing Earth, he returned Roger Price to his original form.

pitt-148611-pittsburgh-sb17-dome-interior(The Star Brand#17 (fb) - BTS) - Jacob Burnley
restored the environment within a few connected domes he created around the southeast border of the Pitt.

(The Star Brand#17) -  Learning of these domes, Col. Browning had Corporal Jorgenson drive him out to the edge of one of the domes. Exiting the vehicle but secured with a tether, Browning approached the dome, after which Jorgenson lost radio contact with him.
pitt-148611-pittsburgh-sb17-memory.
.
Burnley sought to restore Pittsburgh to existence, after which Browning briefly encountered him.

The Witness revealed to Burnley that he had only restored a memory/illusion of it, which subsequently began to fade away.

pitt-pittsburgh-148611-dp727-ditch(D.P. 7#27 (fb) - BTS) - A large volcano developed in the center of the Pitt. The space between the Pitt wall and the volcano was dubbed "the Ditch."

(D.P. 7#27 (fb) - BTS) - A civilian scientific party was allegedly lost in the Pitt.

(D.P. 7#27 - BTS) - Colonel Meyers reported the loss of a civilian scientific party to court-martialed inmates Hamilton Hart (aka Swami), Dave Landers and Darrell Schissel (aka Dirt Devil) and told them that if they agreed to the mission the charges against them would be dropped.

(D.P. 7#27 - BTS) - Although refusing to return to the Pitt, Landers reluctantly agreed when they threatened him with the alternative of lifetime solitary confinement in the Hole.

(D.P. 7#27) - Hart, Landers and Schissel were dropped off in the Ditch. They were given enough food for 5 days and told that if they did not find the missing group in five days to signal them, and they would airdrop more food; however, they would not be picked up until their mission was accomplished.

Schissel convinced the other two that there was no mission and that they were dropped off there to die to save the US Army the expense of keeping them imprisoned for life vs. the risk of causing a paranormal uprising by executing them. Schissel headed, but after Landers started following him, he circled back and slew Hart -- via plugging his airway with Pitt debris -- and took his food supplies.
.
.
pitt-pittsburgh-148611-dp727-geyser.
.
pitt-pittsburgh-148611-dp728-surface     Meanwhile, Randy O'Brien, having traveled to the Pitt within one of his Antibody to help out his friend, was struck by a geyser of Pitt Juice that erupted as he searched the Ditch for Landers. The blast not only left him temporarily paralyzed but also trapped within his Antibody; although he could project miniature Antibodies with full mobility, any of his previously released Antibodies that touched him were similarly paralyzed. He sent out numerous Antibodies to find Landers.

Schissel subsequently caused a massive dust storm around Landers. As it went down his nose and mouth, Landers dropped to the ground and covered his face, realizing as he did that it could be Schissel doing this. After Landers stopped moving, Schissel attempted to take his food rations, at which point Landers grabbed both of his arms. Schissel caused a massive duststorm in an efort to drop Landers but was instead struck in the head by a rock in his duststorm and knocked out. The storm apparently caused a landslide, and Landers and Schissel were buried. After a few minutes, Landers dug himself out, after which he searched for Schissel but found that his skull had been smashed.

A pair of Antibodies then located Landers and led him back to O'Brien, who had futilely sacrificed multiple Antibodies by having them form a dam to block approaching lava. Not affected by whatever was paralyzing O'Brien, Landers picked him up and ran him out of the lava's path. Surviving and rescuing O'Brien gave Landers a significant confidance and morale boost.

(D.P. 7#28) - Landers reached the top of the Pitt with O'Brien, after which they slept a few hours. By the next day, O'Brien had regained most of his mobility but remained trapped within his Antibody. They headed back into civilization.

(The Star Brand#18 - BTS) - Manhattan, New York was covered with smog as part of the "nuclear winter" effect caused by the volcano growing from the Pitt.

Amidst the rubble somewhat distant from the Pitt, Ken Connell resolved to regain the Starbrand power.

(The Star Brand#19 - BTS) - The Starchild visited his mother's grave on the Pitt's outskirts, briefly uncovering her before covering her back up and departing.

(The Star Brand#19) - At the bottom of the Pitt, the cells of the Old Man coalesced back to humanoid form and scaled the wall of the Pitt, emerging on the surface and assaulting Mulrooney, who was wearing a biohazard suit, before flying into the air in search of Ken Connell.

(The Star Brand#19 - BTS) - After a brief battle between Jacob Burnley, during which Air Force pilot Bobby Hanrahan was destroyed by the energies unleashed and healed by Burnley, Jacob transported the Old Man to an asteroid orbitting Jupiter where the Old Man, Starchild and Connell all merged into a single being to close a time loop of their existence.

pitt-148611-pittsburgh-sizecalculationPitt size:

  • The blast that created the Pitt was supposed to have created a hole 15 miles deep and to have vaporized everything within 25 miles of Ken Connell's energy release, which makes sense as he had flown 10 miles into the air prior to his...mishap.
  • They also note that the crater on Earth was 50 miles wide, which seems to make sense, but at 10 miles below its center, the sphere is not going to be 50 miles across...
    • specifically, courtesy of Mathematics teacher Loki, the diameter of the crater based on the above information would be just over 45.8 miles across.
  • Perhaps the force of the sudden vacuum, etc. caused the edges of the crater to crumble and collapse, swiftly expanding to swiftly reach that 50-mile distance?
  • Or, perhaps, Connell's efforts to contain the energies distorted the field into more of an ellipse than a sphere?
  • Browning's report did note that the radius of destruction, including earth and atmosphere was 50 miles, so perhaps that was the most accurate, and the other reports were early estimates that could have been rounded up?
  • The inside front cover to D.P. 7#19 notes the Pitt to be a 25 mile mide crater surrounded by 15 miles of debris.

Pitt date:

The Pitt issue gives the date/time of its creation as 6:06 pm EST, December 22, 1987.

Star Brand#12 has the date/time of the comics convention as 10:37 AM EST, December 19, 1987.

The Old Man pours his energies into Ken, who then shows up Myron's place in that ravaged/healing form before passing out.

After he wakes up, he seems to depart within minutes and unleashes the energies that causes the Pitt.

So, there is no description of nearly 3.5 days passing between the Old Man encounter and the Pitt creation...but it was dark out when alien-looking Ken arrived at Myron's, so that's half a day, and then presumably it took Ken three days to recover despite that not being mentioned?

Or, was it mentioned somethere...or have I otherwise missed something?

The vision of the energy blast would have been observed almost instantly for Justice, but the sound and effects from miles away would have been delayed. As the speed of sound is about 767 miles per hour, or 12.78 miles per minute, or .21 miles per second, I believe it would take 5 seconds to travel 1 mile.
Although he may not have had any way to accurately judge the time, Tensen believed that he and the baby had flown for hours. A reporter noted the winds to have been 300 mph. He obviously wasn't moving at the speed of sound, but he was traveling quickly enough (and with enough force) to be pulled through the air for long enough to seem like hours.
And then he drove for an undetermined distance before getting out of the car 3 miles from the as-yet-unnamed Pitt.
I don't see how we have enough information to calculate exact distance, etc., but I am confident that the sound and wind would have taken "a long time" after the flash/vision of the the energy release that caused the Pitt.

Noting this to be an ugly one, one of the soldiers asked for the gun, but the other soldier reminded him that they were supposed to get pictures first. Reluctantly accepting this, the first solider advised that the other hurry it up, as they were too close to the Pitt to be handing around long in one place.

As the second soldier prepared to take the picture, however, he realized that the creature had spotted them and was heading toward them.

Stating that they were going to have to settle for pictures of pieces of this one, the first soldier drew a shoulder mounted weapon and was excited to try out this "new toy."

As the second soldier urged haste as the creature was almost on top of them, the first soldier replied that he couldn't keep his balance, as the ground kept shifting, after which a number of plant-tendrils erupted from the ground.

Their (presumably death) screams were transmitted back to the nearby military base, which was under the direction of Colonel Browning.

--The Star Brand#15

Note: It is unrevealed whether the biped mutate was slain by the immense plant creature or not.

Its biped nature would make it seem more likely to have  been a mutated human, but that is unrevealed.

That plant creature was eventually destroyed by the Starchild.

(The Star Brand#16) -
Meanwhile, with the Starchild having eliminated death, Pitt creatures proved impossible to kill and continued to advance despite being shot through the heart.

(The Star Brand#16 - BTS) - After transferring the Star Brand power into Jacob Burnley, the Star Child was convinced to allow natural death to occur.
