First Appearance: Nova V#3 (June, 2013)

Powers/Abilities: There are multiple forms of Chitauri with a wide variety of abilities.

The most prominent form of Chitauri are the simple-minded warriors, who were armed with energy weapons and flew their skiffs into battle in outer space. They were the ones that often ended up in the service of other beings as mercenaries or soldiers. They were easily swayed by whoever seemed to be the most dominant entity.

The intelligent Warbringer caste varied not only in size and powers, but was sometimes heavily mutated to become world destroyers. Presumably the leading class of Chitauri Prime's society were also part of the intelligent Warbringer caste, even if they lacked any combat abilities probably due to years of living a decadent lifestyle.

There were also the large, winged, muscular Chitauri with four eyes, who seemed to be nothing more than mindless insect-like drones. They could soar through outer space and apparently were not affected by the vacuum at all. Some of them were armed with swords while others just used their brute strength.

And then there were mutates...or mutants...or whatever they were supposed to be...with a variety of powers...hatching from Inhuman-like cocoons...fully grown (though they were later just referred to as eggs).

It is unrevealed, but possible that all Chitauri hatch from eggs. Or not! Maybe it is part of a mutation process only some go through. Or it is the way all the insect-like flying Chitauri are born.

Other Chitauri were known to grow up from childhood to maturity. It is possible that they also hatch from eggs, but it is not known.

Chitauri used a variety of spaceships including stolen and repurposed warships from other species, which the Chitauri equipped with a full complement of sentient, devourer-class, burrowing torpedoes. The most famous Chitauri spaceships were the Leviathans, which were weaponized biochemically engineered Acanti-Starshark hybrids. They could house hundreds of Chitauri soldiers piloting lightweight eclipse-drive attack skiffs that were capable of outmaneuvering a Shi'ar corvette.

Traits: The Chitauri have a strict hierarchy with mindless drones, simple-minded soldiers and the intelligent Warbringer caste, who were all ruled by the Queen of the Hive, whose macro-intellect could dictate all others. (We have never seen a queen AFAIK, but maybe one of the weird Chitauri seen and slain in Thunderbolts was a queen...I don't know)

At other times the Chitauri were ruled by a king in a despotic monarchy or as constitutional monarchy with a form of government in addition to the king. During these times leadership could change by defeating/murdering the current king in combat.

It is possible that the Chitauri race was only ruled by kings in absence of a hive queen or that the queen granted this form of autonomy to the more intelligent members of the Chitauri species.

According to Mister Gryphon the Chitauri have 192 words for hate, which should say a lot about their race.

History:
(Thanos II#13 (fb) - BTS) - The Chitauri originated on the planet Chitauri Prime. Due to the erratic orbit, the surface was several hundred degrees below freezing for years at a time, but the Chitauri didn't mind.

For hundreds of thousands of years the Chitauri were known as a feared warrior race, whose homeworld was deemed unconquerable.

The race became infamous for their gladiatorial contests between enslaved combatants, whose blood often froze in midair when they died. This blood spray created red snowflakes, which the Chitauri called war snow. They collected and gave the war snow to their children to eat as a first step on their path to become warriors.

(All-New, All-Different Avengers#1 (fb) - BTS) - Millennia ago a Chitauri left an item on Earth that could open a portal from Earth to Chitauri Prime. The Chitauri split it into three pieces, which they hid in what would later be known as New York City.

(Captain America: Steve Rogers#8 (fb) - BTS) - At some point the Red Ghost (Ivan Kragoff) identified the Chitauri as the perfect race to be used for a targeted alien invasion to winnow an overpopulated world or at least gain an advantage over the USA. The Red Ghost harvested a Chitauri queen egg to lure a Chitauri invasion wave to Earth. The Russian government had no interest to go through with his plan.

Feeling guilty, the Red Ghost eventually created the first designs for a Planetary Defense Shield to protect Earth from the upcoming Chitauri wave.

(Nova V#25 (fb)) - Nova (Jesse Alexander) fought Chitauri in outer space.

(Nova V#4 (fb) - BTS) - A group of Chitauri attacked the spaceship of some Black Novas who had stolen a Recorder from the Rigellians. Jesse Alexander abandoned the ship to return to his family on Earth while Titus was caught by the Chitauri. To save his own life Titus offered the stolen Recorder to the Chitauri and his help to decipher the information inside the robot. The Chitauri rebuilt his body and lived and worked with them for years to decipher the plans for an Ultimate Nullifier from the files inside the Recorder. It took them another few years to build the Ultimate Nullifier.

(Nova V#3 (fb) - BTS) - The Chitauri planned to use the Ultimate Nullifier on Earth as a test because adventurers from Earth were a nuisance.

(Nova V#3) - An armada of Chitauri ships made their way to Earth's Solar system, but the Watcher (Uatu) showed them to Nova (Sam Alexander) as a warning.

Nova later encountered them near Jupiter. Titus ordered to fire on him.

(Nova V#4) - Several Chitauri on skimmers tried to pick up the unconscious form of Nova because Titus wanted his helmet, but the young Nova was still alive and fought them off before crashing through the hull of one of their large ships. Inside the ship Titus, the former partner of Sam's father, caught him while they were watched by Chitauri. Titus bragged about the Chitauri's plans until Nova blinded him and escaped with the Ultimate Nullifier. A horde of Chitauri on skimmers hunted Nova through space, but he was faster than them and escaped to Earth. Titus followed Nova back to Earth by himself.

(Nova V#5) - The Chitauri armada waited near Jupiter until Titus returned with Nova and the Ultimate Nullifier, but Nova was in control of the situation and accidentally used the Ultimate Nullifier to create a wormhole that sucked Titus and the whole Chitauri armada through it to parts unknown.

On Chitauri Prime a Chitauri told Jesse Alexander (probably a clone) and other prisoners to get back to work.

(A + X#13) - At some point the mutant Skrulls Cadre K fought a bunch of Chitauri.

(Nova VI#5 (fb) - BTS) - Chitauri scientists created a clone of Jesse Alexander from his DNA, but it was slightly unstable. They created it to get close to Nova (Sam Alexander) and find out how his special Nova helmet worked and then take it back to the Chitauri so they could replicate it. They needed the Jesse Alexander clone because only Jesse and Sam could make the helmet work.

(Nova V#20) - Gladiatorial games from Chitauri Prime were broadcast at the ever-expanding Oblitus station. Nova (Sam Alexander) saw his father (actually the clone) as a gladiator in one of the broadcasts.

Chitauri guards led Jesse Alexander (still the clone) and another prisoner into a gladiatorial arena on Chitauri Prime where their battle was witnessed by thousands of Chitauri.

(Nova V#21 (fb)) - Jesse Alexander (the clone) led an uprising of the gladiators and escaped with several other prisoners from Chitauri Prime in one of the Chitaurian Leviathan spaceships.

(Nova V#21 (fb) - BTS) - The Chitauri guards that had failed to stop them were imprisoned and as punishment were going to die in the gladiatorial arena.

(Nova V#21) - Nova snuck onto the heavily defended planet Chitauri Prime by hiding behind a small meteor the Chitauri didn't shoot because it was too small to do any damage. He made his way to the catacombs beneath the gladiatorial arena where his father (unaware that it was a clone) was imprisoned and fought his way through several Chitauri guards until he made it to the arena's slave master. The slave master sent his giant assistant to deal with Nova, but the assistant was easily taken down by Nova with a low blow. The slave master then cowardly took Nova to the cell where his father had been held until his recent escape. Jesse (the clone) had left behind a message for Sam. Nova got angry at the slave master, who then showed him a video of the escape. According to the slave master, there was unfortunately no way to track the stolen spaceship because the former prisoners had disabled the tracking system before entering warp. A Chitauri that had been imprisoned for failing to stop Jesse and the other prisoners told Nova that his father had fought bravely. After Nova learned what was going to happen to the imprisoned Chitauri he helped them escape from Chitauri Prime in Leviathan spaceships.

(Guardians Team-Up#1) - Nebula and a Chitauri crew hunted the Guardians of the Galaxy to Earth and shot them down. The Chitauri battled the Avengers and the Guardians until Nebula ordered them to retreat back to their ship before she activated a genetic disruptor to paralyze their enemies. When everyone was down they captured Gamora, and Nebula told the Chitauri to tell their master of the success of their mission.

(Guardians Team-Up#2) - Nebula and her Chitauri crew were on their way to deliver Gamora to the living planet Kindun, but Gamora broke her shackles after beating up two Chitauri guards. She made it to the bridge and got into a fight with Nebula, but was knocked out by an energy blast from a Chitauri weapon. They arrived on Kindun and delivered Gamora to the living planet's humanoid manifestation, which was guarded by more Chitauri. Kindun assured Nebula that she had already been paid and then explained to her that he planned to kill Gamora slowly for Thanos' crimes against Kindun, whom Thanos tried to conquer. The Avengers and Guardians arrived and fought the Chitauri and Nebula to quickly free Gamora.

(Nova V#29) - Nova (Sam Alexander) robbed the Chitauri Reserve Bank on Chitauri Prime while claiming to be Deadpool in front of members of the Chitauri Government (including the slave master from #21). Nova used the stolen ten million credits to find out the whereabouts of the prisoners, including his father (still unaware that it wasn't him), that had escaped from Chitauri Prime (including being a dumb boy sending out an intergalactic broadcast and inadvertently putting a bounty on their heads).

In retaliation for the robbery and to not lose face in front of other species, the Chitauri sent Warbringer after the Nova boy.

Warbringer took his dreadnought spaceship and met up with the slave master and his assistant. Warbringer chastised the slave master for allowing the prisoners to escape and Nova to rob the bank and wondered what he should do about it. The slave master suggested destroying Earth to get Nova's attention. Warbringer liked the idea and ordered his crew to fly him to Earth, but before they could do so, they were contacted by an alien that had placed a tracker on the ship stolen by Jesse Alexander and the other former prisoners (the alien had sold the information a few pages earlier to Nova/Sam Alexander; can't blame him for making an extra buck).

(Nova I#30 - BTS) - Warbringer took his ship to the remains of the Skrull homeworld and used his ship's tractor beam to hurl the asteroids with the highest concentration of iron at high velocity in Earth's direction. He did this to soften the planet for the Chitauri's upcoming invasion. He lost count after the first 100 asteroids.

(Nova V#30) - Warbringer met with the eye-patched alien in the asteroid belt that once was the Skrull's homeworld. Warbringer was tasked to recover the stolen warship, the escaped gladiators and kill Nova on sight. Warbringer explained what he was doing with the asteroids and then bought the tracker from the shocked eye-patch alien. The other Chitauri celebrated Warbringer after a nice speech.

They soon caught up with the stolen Chitauri warship, but Nova got in their way. Jesse (the clone) and his crew fled to Knowhere while Nova kicked Warbringer's butt and then disabled his ship. Warbringer revealed that he had sent asteroids in Earth's direction, and Nova returned to his solar system to stop them but soon realized that it was too much for him.

Meanwhile Warbringer's crew recovered the stolen warship, brought iy aboard and put the prisoners in stasis. Warbringer then ordered them to set course for Earth because he was not done with Nova.

(Nova V#31 - BTS) - Beta Ray Bill, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Iron Man (Tony Stark), Rocket Raccoon and Thor (Jane Foster) helped Nova deal with the asteroids. They told Nova to go after Warbringer while they saved Earth.

(Nova V#31) - Warbringer's ship had just passed Pluto when Nova attacked it. Nova flew with Warbringer into the sun to burn him. He handed the burnt remains of Warbringer over to his crew, whom he ordered to release all prisoners, including his dad (who was still just a clone). He suggested that both sides agree that this battle was a stalemate, and the Chitauri left Earth's solar system.

(Guardians of the Galaxy III#27) - A Chitauri army working for Kindun attacked Spartax to get their hands on Gamora for their master/planet. The Guardians of the Galaxy (Groot, Kitty Pryde, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, Venom) fought them while Gamora made her way to the planet Kindun, who had come with his Chitauri army to Spartax. Gamora made her way inside the planet, but Kindun ordered his Chitauri army not to stop their attack on Spartax. She confronted the humanoid manifestation of the planet and survived everything his Chitauri guards threw at her. Gamora threatened Kindun's life and, after she took down his Chitauri guards, he agreed to depart with the Chitauri army. The Chitauri retreated from Spartax back to Kindun, who left Spartax's system with them.

SECRET WARS III HAPPENED

(Guardians of the Galaxy IV#1) - The Thing stole something from the Chitauri, who caught up with him. Thing's new team the Guardians of the Galaxy (Drax, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord/Kitty Pryde, Venom) arrived to aid him against the Chitauri. Star-Lord (Kitty Pryde) quickly blew up the Leviathan ship all by herself by phasing through it and disrupting the technology. Meanwhile the other Guardians took down the Chitauri soldiers on their skimmers.

(Nova VI#1 - BTS) - The Chitauri contacted the Jesse Alexander clone currently stationed on Earth. He assured them that Sam had no clue that he was not his true dad.

(All-New, All-Different Avengers#1) - A Chitauri relay team teleported Warbringer to Avengers Tower on Earth through cellular reconstitution (his information was sent to Earth and living tissue in the area was used to clone his physical form before his mind was transferred into the clone, which meant that everyone in the area died). Mister Gryphon (Kang for those not in the know) was impressed and told Warbringer about an artifact left behind by a Chitauri millennia ago, which could open a portal for the Chitauri to Earth. Spider-Man (Miles Morales) eavesdropped on them, but Warbringer attacked the young hero. Iron Man and Captain America came to his aid, but were quickly knocked unconscious by Warbringer.

(All-New, All-Different Avengers#2) - Warbringer got his claws on two parts of the artifact despite interference by the likes of Ms. Marvel (Khan), Spider-Man (Morales), Nova (Alexander), Thor (Foster), Captain America (Wilson) and Iron Man (Stark).

(All-New, All-Different Avengers#3) - Mister Gryphon led Warbringer to a cemetery on Hart Island, Long Island Sound where the third part of the artifact was buried. Warbringer reunited the artifact and a portal to a Chitauri army opened in the sky above New York City (Warbringer was unaware that these Chitauri were from the future...probably an alternate one). Warbringer dropped the artifact after an attack by Thor and Nova, and it fell apart. The portal began to close, but Iron Man gave Spider-Man the parts of the artifacts and ordered him to combine them and then destroy them in an instant right after Warbringer was pushed through the portal by Nova. The plan worked, and Warbringer found himself surrounded by Chitauri in the future. The future Chitauri quickly dispatched of the weak Chitauri warrior from the past.

(Nova VI#5 (fb) - BTS) - The Chitauri's Jesse Alexander clone stopped reporting back to the Chitauri after living with Sam's family for a few months. He ignored the Chitauri's order to kill Sam and stalled to return to the Chitauri, claiming he couldn't succeed at the mission. He knew that they would be coming for him soon and would send another Jesse clone to finish his job.

(Nova VI#5) - After the Jesse clone revealed the truth to Sam, two Chitauri warriors attacked Nova (Sam Alexander) and his father's clone at the stadium near Sam's school in Carefree, Arizona. The two warriors blew themselves up when the Novas took them into the sky. The Novsa survived, but dropped through the ceiling of the school's gym where they were confronted by another Jesse clone, who took the helmet to become Nova and deal with Sam.

(Nova VI#6 - BTS) - The evil Nova (Jesse clone) told Sam once again that he would take the black Nova helmet from him for the Chitauri. They fought until Nova (Sam) defeated the evil clone of his dad, and the good clone took the normal Nova helmet and went to space to deal with the Chitauri and protect Sam and his family.

(Nova VI#7) - In search for the real Jesse, the Jesse clone found the ship with the other Jesse clones, but he was caught by the robot guards. The clone called Sam for help, and Sam caught up with the Chitauri ship. He penetrated their defenses with ease and took the fight to the robot before finding a bunch of Jesse clones in suspended animation as well as the good Jesse clone. The good Jesse clone blew up the ship after telling Sam to save himself. Nova (Sam) survived, and the clones (and the story) were history.

(Guardians of Infinity#6/2) - Two Chitauri overheard Gamora talking to pilot D'Clan.

(Guardians of Infinity#6/2 - BTS) - D'Clan was confronted by the Chitauri, and he told them that she was heading to the planet Maveth. They took D'Clan with them just to make sure he wasn't lying.

(Guardians of Infinity#6/2) - Shortly after Gamora and Star-Lord (Pryde) found the doomsday bomb (somehow connected to the Phoenix Force) Gamora was looking for on Maveth, the Chitauri claimed the planet for themselves and tossed D'Clan in front of the two Guardians. They demanded that the Guardians to hand over the bomb, but they wouldn't, so the Chitauri attacked them. D'Clan called in his spaceship while Gamora fought the Chitauri and Pryde held the bomb. The bomb somehow activated, and Pryde tossed it at the Chitauri while she escaped the planet with Gamora and D'Clan. The bomb blew up the Chitauri and the whole planet.

(Captain America: Steve Rogers#8 (fb) - BTS) - Captain America (whose history had been overwritten by the cosmic cube Kobik so that he was raised by and was loyal to Hydra; aka "Stevil") killed Red Ghost and put Dr. Erik Selvig in charge of his former lab. He also put Red Ghost's plan to lure the Chitauri to Earth with a queen into motion by placing several Chitauri cocoons, including one with a queen, in a greenhouse somewhere in the US. Captain America ("Stevil") knew that Chitauri were just insect-like dumb aliens that would cross the universe to find a queen.

(Thunderbolts IV#1) - Using old S.H.I.E.L.D. files, news media and military feeds, the Fixer created a threat level assessment algorithm that led the Thunderbolts to find an abandoned warehouse filled with unhatched Chitauri cocoons in Whitemarsh, Georgia. They looked like Terrigen cocoons to them, but were clearly not.

(Thunderbolts IV#2) - Some of the Chitauri hatched, and some of them were heavily mutated. The Thunderbolts destroyed them and burnt the remaining cocoons. The Royal Inhuman Vessel arrived, and the Thunderbolts were confronted about supposedly killing Inhumans by Crystal, Flint, Gorgon, Grid and Naja.

(Thunderbolts IV#3 - BTS) - After the Thunderbolts escaped, the Inhumans Grid and Swain did some tests on the cocoons and the results were inconclusive.

(Captain America: Sam Wilson#11) - Some Chitauri (back to their Avengers movie look) ambushed Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and Captain America (Sam Wilson) on an explorer station, which was heavily damaged in the process. Carol and Sam took care of the problem, while Carol tried to convince Sam that the powers of the Inhuman Ulysses could help them in the future.

(Captain America: Steve Rogers#4) - The Thunderbolts fought a wave of Chitauri in Earth's orbit until Kobik used her powers to just teleport the Chitauri back to where they came from.

Somewhere else, Quasar (Avril Kincaid) used her Cosmic Awareness to witness a Chitauri hatching from a cocoon.

(Captain America: Steve Rogers#8) - A Chitauri wave was opposed by Captain Marvel and the full force of Alpha Flight's space forces above Earth's orbit. They also invaded Alpha Flight's space station where they were opposed by Maria Hill, Captain America ("Stevil") and others. Captain Marvel caught one of the Chitauri, but found out that this type of Chitauri had no language. When more Chitauri were incoming Quasar (Avril Kincaid) used her powers as Protector of the Universe to disintegrate them in one fell swoop.

Captain America ("Stevil") stayed in touch with the man who was looking after the cocoons for him. The man eventually informed Captain America ("Stevil") that the Chitauri queen was about to hatch.

(Captain America: Steve Roger#9 - BTS) - Captain Marvel warned the U.S. Government of an incoming Chitauri invasion force bigger than the Annihilation Wave. Maria Hill introduced the Planetary Defense Shield, an impenetrable force field, as a means to stop the Chitauri from getting to Earth.

(Captain America: Steve Roger#10 - BTS) - The Red Skull reminded Captain America ("Stevil") of their plan to use the Chitauri fleet to destabilize world governments and cleave them from their so-called protectors. "Stevil" assured the Red Skull that Maria Hill stealing the plans for the Planetary Defense Shield would not interfere with their plans.

(Nova VII#2) - A Chitauri warrior aided the bounty hunters Titus and Death's Head (FPA) in an attack on Nova (Sam Alexander) and Nova (Richard Rider) on Knowhere.

(Nova VII#3) - The three bounty hunters got their butts handed to them by the Novas until Death's Head revealed that he had planted a bomb on Knowhere. He demanded the helmets from the two Novas in exchange for sparing the lives on everyone on the station. That didn't go too well, and, while Nova (Rider) dealt with the mercenaries, Nova (Alexander) dealt with the Chitauri warriors guarding the bomb. Nova (Rider) was overpowered by the Chitauri warrior. Titus ordered the other Chitauri to detonate the bomb, but Nova (Alexander) tried to hold back the detonation. Nova (Rider) ripped apart the Chitauri who had been holding him in check and then aided Nova (Alexander) to stop the detonation.

(Invincible Iron Man IV#3) - Three Chitauri on skimmers hunted Spider-Man (Morales) and Ironheart through New York City.

(Totally Awesome Hulk#1.MU) - Lady Hellbender fought her way through the guards at a Chitauri circus and freed two animals from the arena that were meant to fight to the death for the audience.

(Royals#2) - A Chitauri wave headed for Earth and encountered the Inhumans' intergalactic spaceship Astarion near the dwarf planet Pluto. While Noh-Varr and Crystal used the Astarion's weapon to blast their way through the attacking Chitauri, Gorgon and Flint were standing on the ship's hull to fight them in outer space. Eventually Flint used Pluto to get the largest part of the wave away from the Astarion. The ship then easily made their way through the rest of the Chitauri wave. The wave was still headed for Earth.

(Deadpool VI#31) - Agent Coulson discovered the greenhouse with the Chitauri cocoons and -- because he was already suspecting that something fishy was going on with Captain America ("Stevil") -- he knew that he was planning something dangerous with the cocoons.

(U.S.Avengers#5) - On the Helicarrier Douglass, Roberto Da Costa saw video footage of a Chitauri wave arriving in Earth's orbit.

(Captain America: Steve Rogers#16) - The Planetary Defense Shield went down after a Hydra terrorist named James Q. Reed blew up the base station. The Chitauri wave was still headed for Earth.

(Secret Empire#0/Mighty Captain Marvel#5/U.S.Avengers#6/Amazing Spider-Man IV#29) - The Chitauri wave arrived and was held back from entering Earth's orbit by the likes of Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Blue Marvel (Adam Brashear), the Guardians of the Galaxy (Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord/Peter Quill), Hyperion, America Chavez, Spectrum (Monica Rambeau), Quasar (Avril Kincaid), Alpha Flight (Aurora/Jeanne-Marie Beaubier, Puck/Eugene Judd, Sasquatch/Walter Langkowski, others).

(Secret Empire#0/Mighty Captain Marvel#5) - Hyperion was blasted into unconsciousness by the Chitauri.

(Secret Empire#0/Mighty Captain Marvel#5/U.S.Avengers#6) - Quasar was swallowed by one of the Leviathan ships.

(U.S.Avengers#6/Mighty Captain Marvel#5) - The Leviathan blew up when Cannonball hit it, but he apparently perished in the explosion as well.

(Secret Empire#7 (fb)) - Nova pulled Quasar out of the destroyed Leviathan.

(Mighty Captain Marvel#5) - Alpha Cadets Glory, Dante Cruz, A'di and her robot Itz joined the battle against the Chitauri.

(Secret Empire#0 - BTS) - Meanwhile Iron Man and Ironheart repaired the Planetary Defense Shield and activated it on Captain America ("Stevil")'s order.

(Secret Empire#0/Mighty Captain Marvel#5/U.S.Avengers#6/Free Comic Book Day 2017 (Secret Empire)#1) - The shield held, and thousands of Chitauri died upon hitting it.

(Secret Empire#0) - In Earth's orbit, the heroes kept fighting, but Iron Man and Ironheart were unable to deactivate the shield to allow the heroes to retreat to Earth.

(Secret Empire#0/Mighty Captain Marvel#5) - Captain America ("Stevil") finally revealed that he was now the leader of Hydra and would not open a portal for Captain Marvel and the other heroes in Earth's orbit because it was all part of his plan. He revealed that more Chitauri waves would be coming because they were searching for their queen, which was on Earth.

(Secret Empire: Brave New World#3/2) - Dead Chitauri were floating around Alpha Flight's space station.

(Ultimates2 II#7) - Outside the Planetary Defense Shield, Captain Marvel, Spectrum, Blue Marvel, Gamora, Abigail Brand, Rocket Raccoon and others were attacked by another Chitauri wave. Many Chitauri were killed when they tried to break through the Planetary Defense Shield, but more soon arrived to continue their assault.

(Mighty Captain Marvel#6) - Another Chitauri wave hit Earth, but the Planetary Defense Shield held, and they were faced by the likes of Captain Marvel, America Chavez, the Guardians of the Galaxy (Star-Lord, Gamora, Groot, Rocket) and Spectrum.

Another wave arrived while the Alpha Cadets tried to get a signal to Earth. They succeeded in re-establishing contact with Earth, but Captain Marvel was injured when she tried to save them from the Chitauri, and the Cadets were surrounded.

(Mighty Captain Marvel#7) - Alpha Flight space station's weapons saved the cadets from the Chitauri long enough for Captain Marvel to regain consciousness and return them to safety inside the station.

Another Chitauri wave was funneled into a trap by Alpha Flight's drones and spaceships to bring them to Captain Marvel and Hyperion, who blasted them to pieces. The Guardians of the Galaxy returned to help as well to defeat this Chitauri wave.

Another wave was soon spotted on the monitors inside Alpha Flight's space station.

(Ultimates2 II#9) - The Chitauri's attacks in Earth's orbit continued. They were faced by Blue Marvel, Captain Marvel, America Chavez, Rocket Raccoon, Spectrum and others, who succeeded in taking out the whole wave.

(Secret Empire#1 - BTS) - Captain Marvel was alerted by Alpha Flight personnel that another Chitauri wave was incoming.

(Captain America: Sam Wilson#22/Captain America: Steve Rogers#17) - The Planetary Defense Shield remained up while many of Earth's heroes fought the Chitauri waves above Earth.

(Secret Empire#3) - Chitauri waves kept coming, but Captain Marvel and her allies held their own against them.

(Mighty Captain Marvel#8) - Captain Marvel, America Chavez, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Hyperion, Spectrum, the Alpha Cadets and other members of the Alpha Flight space program kept fighting Chitauri in Earth's orbit on the other side of the Planetary Defense Shield.

(Secret Empire#8/Mighty Captain Marvel#8) - Quasar finally regained consciousness and broke the Planetary Defense Shield. Captain Marvel flew down to Earth and found the greenhouse with the Chitauri queen egg. She blew up the building with explosives, ending the waves of Chitauri attacking Earth.

(Thor vs. Hulk: Champions of the Universe#5 (fb) - BTS) - The Chitauri attacked an alien planet, but the planet's Emperor used the Tactigon (of Avengers: The Initiative fame...see K.I.A. or Armory) to create a black hole above the planet as the ultimate weapon against the Chitauri. Their ship was pulled into the black hole, but the Chitauri kept fighting.

(Thor vs. Hulk: Champions of the Universe#4) - Thor and Bruce Banner were teleported to the planet during the Chitauri's attack by the Promoter to retrieve the Tactigon.

(Thor vs. Hulk: Champions of the Universe#5) - Thor saved a woman and two children from the Chitauri. The woman led them to General Marta Kane, the daughter of the Emperor. She told them what the Emperor had done and Banner hoped that they could close the black hole with the Tactigon again. Thor, General Kane and Banner fought their way through the Chitauri hordes on their way to the castle. Thor eventually sent Banner and Kane to the castle while he dealt with more attacking Chitauri.
In the end the black hole was closed, and Banner, who had turned into the Hulk to deal with Kane's abusive father, was handed the Tactigon by Kane.

(Thanos II#13) - Thanos easily conquered Chitauri Prime within five hours and crushed the head of the Chitauri's king beneath his boot when the king begged for mercy. He took his place on the throne, and the Chitauri screamed his name. A lickspittle, whom Thanos only called "No One" (the Chitauri accepted this because he was too afraid not to), immediately offered the services of all the warships and Leviathan frigates Thanos was merciful enough to let live as well as the Chitauri's complete surrender. "No One" had only one request, which angered Thanos, but he decided to listen. "No One" asked Thanos to stop the Rider (Frank Castle from an alternate future), whom "No One" believed to be working for Thanos, because the Rider kept slaughtering Chitauri in Chitauri-Prime's orbit even faster than Thanos had done earlier. The Chitauri tried to defend Thanos, but the Rider ran through thousands of them before defeating Thanos and taking him to the future.

(Thanos Legacy#1 (fb)) - After his excursion to the future, Thanos use the Time Gem to return to Chitauri Prime in the present. After a quick excursion to Earth he took his place on the throne on Chitauri Prime once again.

(Guardians of the Galaxy I#150) - Warbringer of the Chitauri offered the alien Talinda her life in return for the location of the Power Stone because the Chitauri needed it to free Chitauri Prime from Thanos.

(Infinity Countdown Prime#1) - The Chitauri under Warbringer's leadership made their way to the planetoid Xitaung where the Nova Corps kept the Power Stone.

Meanwhile on Chitauri Prime thousands of Chitauri kneeled around Thanos' throne.

(Infinity Countdown#1) - Warbringer and his Chitauri attacked Xitaung, but Drax barred their path.

(Infinity Countdown#2) - The Nova Corps fought the Fraternity of Raptors and the Chitauri to defend the Power Stone. The Guardians of the Galaxy arrived to aid them against the Chitauri and the Fraternity of Raptors, who also fought each other.

(Infinity Countdown#3) - The fight on Xitaung continued, and a Chitauri blew the Horn of Doom to motivate their ranks. Warbringer tossed the hornblower aside, and the battle continued until Star-Lord shrank down the Power Stone and tossed it into Drax's saxophone. Drax's music took down Warbringer and his Chitauri.

(Infinity Countdown: Champions#1 (fb) - BTS) - Warbringer and his Chitauri annihilated a world despite interference by the Nova Corps.

(Infinity Countdown: Champions#1) - Nova (Sam Alexander) and the Champions caught up with Warbringer's Leviathan ship at Chitauri Prime. Warbringer fought Nova in outer space until he tossed him down to Chitauri Prime. The Champions landed on Chitauri Prime as well and found all the Chitauri there kneeling. "No One" told them that they were waiting on orders from their new king, Thanos. Warbringer and his Chitauri came down to Chitauri Prime and criticized Thanos for wasting the greatest army in the universe. Warbringer threatened to kill all Chitauri on Chitauri Prime because they were now a shame to his race as slaves of Thanos. Thanos didn't care and let Warbringer proceed to slaughter the Chitauri, who didn't even defend themselves because they were not ordered to. The Champions tried to defend the Chitauri against Warbringer and his Chitauri.

(Infinity Countdown: Champions#2) - The Champions fought Warbringer and his Chitauri crew to defend the Chitauri on Chitauri Prime who did not defend themselves. Nova defeated Warbringer in combat and ordered the Chitauri that were now loyal to him to stop killing their own people. Thanos allowed the Champions to leave, and they took Warbringer with them as their prisoner to deliver him to the Nova Corps.

(Infinity Wars Prime#1/Thanos Legacy#1 (fb)) - Thanos vowed to the kneeling Chitauri warriors that he would gather the Infinity Stones once again. He pointed out that the Chitauri Warbringer had failed to even pick up the Power Stone. He finally ordered the Chitauri to rise and wage war against the galaxy at his side. Seconds later, Thanos was stabbed through the back and decapitated by Requiem (Gamora). A Chitauri declared her their new ruler, but Gamora had no interest in leading them and used gas to get rid of the Chitauri surrounding her.

(Infinity Wars#2 (fb)) - Requiem (Gamora) fought her way through a few more Chitauri.

(Thanos Legacy#1 (fb)) - The Rider (Frank Castle) traveled from the future to Chitauri Prime in the present and found the corpse of Thanos and numerous dead Chitauri. Starfox arrived on Chitauri Prime as well to pick up an item from his brother's corpse.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#1) - Some Chitauri joined Nebula and her horde of mercenaries, including some Badoon, Kronans and Trolls. They fought the Asgardians of the Galaxy on Draeketh, the planet of Temples. Nebula escaped and left behind her crew, who were soundly defeated by the Asgardians of the Galaxy.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#5) - A bunch of Chitauri were still working for Nebula. One of them was stabbed to death by Valkyrie.

(Avengers: No Road Home#1) - The Chitauri noticed when the goddess Nyx let night fall over the entire universe.

(Wolverine: Infinity Watch#1-2, 4-5) - Warbringer tried to get his hands on the Time Stone to go back in time and save the Chitauri, but failed.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#8 (fb) - BTS) - The Chitauri hive created the drone Peacebringer and equipped him with a bio-explosive to murder the whole Galactic Council.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#7) - The Chitauri sent diplomatic-drone Peacebringer to a meeting of the Galactic Council on the diplomatic conference center Proscenium.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#8) - Peacebringer revealed his true intentions, but was teleported away by the Profiteer, who was posing as the Badoon Sisterhood's Lani Ko Ako.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#17 (fb) - BTS) - As part of his plan to merge the Dark Dimension with the regular universe, Dormammu possessed the Chitauri's queen to take control over the whole race through their combined hive mind.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#17) - Doctor Doom joined forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy to thwart Dormammu's plans. He teleported with Star-Lord, Drax, Groot and Moondragon to a ship the Rigellians had provided to him. It was parked in Chitauri Prime's orbit where Doom used the ship to collect mineral-rich asteroids to create an army of Doombots. They attacked the Dormammu-controlled Chitauri on the planet below.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#18) - While the Doombots waged war on the Chitauri on the planet, Doctor Doom teleported with Star-Lord, Drax, Groot and Moondragon to the surface. Doom then had his Doombots siphon Dormammu's magic from the controlled Chitauri into himself and -- through a magic circle formed with his allies --  captured and confined all of Dormammu's power. Doom then teleported the Guardians away to where they were needed to banish Dormammu, who had possessed Ego the Living Planet, back to the Dark Dimension.

Doctor Doom later met with the Skrull Sister Talionis of the Brethren of the Forgotten Flame cult on Chitauri Prime. She had secretly helped Doom orchestrate the possession of Ego the Living Planet by Dormammu. As a reward for her services, Doom gave her the leaderless Chitauri race to rule over them as their new queen. She planned to use the Chitauri to eventually split the Kree/Skrull alliance and become ruler of the Skrulls.

Comments: Created by Ryan Meinerding, Mark Millar, Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness & Dexter Vines.

The Chitauri name was first used in the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610)'s Ultimates I#8 (November, 2002) by Mark Millar for a sect of the shapeshifting aliens also known as Skrulls.
For the first Avengers (2012) movie the name was used, but the race was completely redesigned to be its own thing. The final look was created by Ryan Meinerding (Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development).
In Marvel Comics, the Avengers movie version was later first used by Jeph Loeb in his Nova series.

In general this race is a complete mess! Everything about them goes in five different directions and changes with each writer or storyline. Some try to combine what we learned before while others just throw in something new we have never heard or seen before that doesn't work with what was already established. They were smart reptilian aliens, dumb insect-like aliens or both at the same time with the various versions fighting side by side. Their speech patterns switched between pure alien speech to normal speech to barely readable speech. Even the way their society works is inconsistent. In that regard the Chitauri remind me of the Xindi from Star Trek: Enterprise. They don't seem to be a single species, but rather a few species that originated all on the same planet.

I am not sure what to make of the sudden change of appearance for the Chitauri during the Secret Empire crossover. They seemed like a completely different species, but then the previously known Chitauri appeared alongside them as well during the crossover, and they were all called Chitauri. It does not make much sense, but could be a similar situation to Earth's different sub-species of humanity.
They apparently all follow the same queen anyway...as long as there is one around to follow. Otherwise pretty much any tyrant can turn them into cannonfodder.

The Thor vs. Hulk: Champions of the Universe series looks like something that it not Reality-616, but it could work within it.
Agreed. I reviewed it for the Champion profile, and I did not find anything to specifically contradict it.
