Powers/Abilities: Avril Kincaid is an experienced S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, trained in armed and unarmed combat and in espionage. She is a skilled actor, feigning terror and helplessness while manipulating a foe to her own ends. She is skilled with an energy blaster, one sufficient to take out each of the close-proximity Blood Brothers with a single blast.

As Quasar, she wields the Quantum Bands, which allow her to access the virtually limitless energies of the Quantum Zone. She can fly and survive in space, and she has primarily used the Bands to fire powerful energy blasts, destroying energy fields, etc.

She also possesses a degree of Cosmic Awareness, allowing her to sense potential planetary or greater levels of threats.

Height: 5'8"
Weight: 130 lbs.
Eyes: Blue (occasionally look more green)
Hair: Brown

History:

quasar-kincaid-casm7
quasar-kincaid-casm7-face-profile (Captain America: Sam Wilson#7 (fb) - BTS) - The head of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s plainclothes surveillance department, Avril Kincaid was assigned to run the daycare center (for imaginary children, except Kobik) in Pleasant Hill, a S.H.I.E.L.D. program to use Kobik (a sentient manifestation of reality-altering Cosmic Cube fragments) to re-write reality/reprogram super-villains into peaceful civilians.

Though she did not feel that Pleasant Hill was a good idea, she followed her orders.

(Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega#1) - Avril knew the identities of everyone else in Pleasant Hill, but the museum curator (Wendell Vaughn) was given Level-Nine classification, and she had no idea who he really was. However, she did know that the Quantum Bands were being stored at the museum in Pleasant Hill.

(Captain America: Sam Wilson#7 (fb) - BTS / Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega#1 - BTS) - After Helmut Zemo led an uprising/breakout that captured S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill and commander Steve Rogers, Avril considered accessing the Quantum Bands, which she felt could turn the tide of the conflict. However, she abandoned that plan as it would require a second person to shut the system down remotely.

When the Blood Brothers rampaged, intending to punish those that had brainwashed them, they confronted Avril, who feigned helplessness while planning to get them to take him to Zemo and his captives.

(Captain America: Sam Wilson#7) - As her faked screams drew the attention of the investigating Captain America (Sam Wilson) and Winter Soldier who were investigting Pleasant Hill and who came to the apparent rescue. As the heroes fought the Blood Brothers, Avril contacted the Gaffer, asking him to unlock her armory, hidden behind a chalkboard. Grabbing a blaster, she took out both Blood Brothers and then introduced herself to the heroes, explaining what her plan had been before their involvement.

She then explained the entire Pleasant Hill situation to them, reluctantly putting aside differences both men had had with S.H.I.E.L.D. recently and realizing they could help her achieve her plan.

(Captain America: Sam Wilson#7 - BTS) - Avril sent them to the Pleasant Hill Circus, where they defeated Circus of Crime members as well as the Brothers Grimm and then shut down the security. Sam noted that it would work if Avril had done her part, and James replied that -- based on the impression she had given off -- that he was pretty sure she had done so.

(Captain America: Sam Wilson#7/2 - BTS) - Kobik seemingly restored the aged Steve Rogers (actually secretly replacing him with a fascist counterpart whose history she had altered to mirror that of Roger's Reality-61311 counterpart) to his previous vitality just before Sam and James caught up to him.

(Captain America: Sam Wilson#8 - BTS) - When James asked Mach VII about Avril, Abner was confident that if she had a plan, it was a good one.

quasar-kincaid-asaopho-intro

quasar-kincaid-asaopho-prep-blast(Captain America: Sam Wilson#8) - At the museum, Avril was frustrated to find the Fast Five present and looting it. Walking in and mocking their lack of desire to settle down and enjoy the small town's slower pace, she swiftly considered that in the future, she would go for the sneak attack, as five-to-one odds were bad. Taking advantage of the tight spaced, she took out Gold Rush, Green Light, Red Line, and Silver Ghost before being punched down from behind by Blue Streak.

However, before Blue Streak could further assault her, he was dropped by a book the back of the head by the museum curator. As Avril recognized his position, the curator noted that he had been waiting for her ever since the chaos broke note, confirming that the knew who she was and what she was looking for.

(Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega#1) - After Avril noted she didn't know who he really was, Wendell revealed his true identity and showed her the Quantum Bands. Avril swiftly realized that this was her chance to a hero.

After Zemo captured Kobik and Graviton formed a field to keep the Avengers out, Avril, now wearing the bands and a Quasar costume, and despite her uncertainty, she shattered both Graviton's field and the field containing Kobik. After Kobik sent Zemo (and Dr. Erik Selvig) to the Himalayan mountains and then transported herself and the Winter Soldier away, the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. forces rounded up most of the remaining escaped convicts.

Wendell Vaughn trained Avril in using the Quantum Bands. Although she initially failed in creating quantum constructs, he assured her she would succeed with the proper training, and he officially dubbed her "Quasar."

quasar-kincaid-casr4-legscrossed (Captain America: Steve Rogers I#4) - Under training from Wendell Vaughn, Avril was shocked when she tapped into Cosmic Awareness and experienced a vision of a monstrous Chitauri. After Wendell explained how/why she had observed this, she asked how she could turn it off, and he advised her to take calming deep breaths and to focus on the environment around her.
quasar-kincaid-casr8-chit-wipeout
As she recovered, she noted that she could not remember/recall what she had seen. He acknowledged that it was likely terrifying, but that it was not unusual to not be able to hold on to such things initially; he assured her that with training, she would get it. Avril asked if he shouldn't take back the bands so the universe had a more experienced protector, but Wendell assured her that he had made mistakes when he was getting started, and that she was Quasar now.

(Captain America: Steve Rogers I#8) - Still working with Wendell (at a S.H.I.E.L.D. training compound in a classified location), Avril had another vision of the Chitauri. When she was able to specify the confrontation as being in space and to include Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Director Hill, Wendell complimented her on her learning to harness her cosmic awareness, which he noted to be like an emergency warning system for the Protector of the Universe.

However, when she considered that she should use her powers to help Earth's heroes, Wendell advised her that they likely had it under control while she needed to take the time to learn how to handle cosmic awareness, citing how it had negatively affected him when he was Quasar.

After Wendell checked in with Alpha Flight's space station to confirm the Chitauri assault had been resolved, Avril appreciated that another wave, much larger than the last, was coming. Despite Wendell's insistence to the contrary, Avril flew to Alpha's station, where she swiftly eliminated the massive Chitauri fleet.

Having arranged this threat as part of a plan to institute a force field around Earth as a means of defense (but actually intended to faciliate the fascist Captain America's takeover of Earth), the fascist Captain America chastised Captain Marvel and Director Hill of again trying to use a young girl to manipulate Earth (like Kobik had been used). Initially chastising Avril as well, he composed himself and noted that she was being manipulated.

Admitting the hypocracy in asking her to use her Cosmic Awareness, he requested her help in finding the Winter Soldier (whom he knew was working alongside Kobik at the time).

quasar-kincaid-casr11-joy

(Captain America: Steve Rogers I#11) - At a bookstore, Avril's girlfriend, Joy, asked her if she had even read the last book she bought her. Avril apologized, noting how busy and intense here work was, and they joked about how Avril's being a secret agent, keeping everything secret, and not keeping in touch was sexy. Joy caught Avril when she collapsed while having a Cosmic Awareness vision, after which she noted that she had to tell Cap that she had located Kobik and the Thunderbolts.

(Captain America: Steve Rogers I#14) - After Captain Marvel had the planetary defense S.H.I.E.L.D. activated and tested, Quasar unleashed the Quantum Bands' power against the S.H.I.E.L.D.. Pushing herself to her limits before passing out, she brought the S.H.I.E.L.D. down to 51%, but it held.
Awakening in a hospital bed, she apologized to Captain America for failing, but Cap assured her that she had not as she had given it everything she had.

quasar-kincaid-se0-blastchitauri-leviathan quasar-kincaid-se0-chitauri-leviathan-confront-front (Mighty Captain Marvel I#5) - Quasar was present aboard Alpha Flight space station as the heroes -- including Abigail Brand, Captain Marvel, America Chavez, Gamora, Groot, Hyperion, Phyla-Vell, Puck, Monica Rambeau/Photon, Rocket (Raccoon), Sasquatch, Star-Lord -- prepared for the Chitauri invasion fleet.

(U.S. Avenger#6 / Amazing Spider-Man IV#29) - Quasar battled the approaching Chitauri fleet alongside numerous other heroes.

(U.S. Avenger#6) - Cannonball joined the heroes battling the Chitauri fleet.

(Secret Empire I#0 / U.S. Avenger#6 / Mighty Captain Marvel I#5) - Battling the Chitauri invasion in space, Quasar was overwhelmed and apparently consumed by an immense Chitauri leviathan ("dragon").

quasar-kincaid-se0-chitauri-leviathan-chomp

(U.S. Avenger#6 - BTS) - As Cannonball rushed to try to rescue Quasar, the dragon exploded, apparently killing him.

(Ultimates II#7) - Adam Brashear narrowly escaped being eaten by a Chitauri leviathan, and he noted he wasn't sure he would have survived beaten eaten like Quasar was.

quasar-kincaid-se7-recovered (Secret Empire I#7 (fb)) - Nova fished Quasar out of the wreckage of the Chitauri ship, and the other heroes futilely hoped that she would be their chance to overcome their fate.

(Secret Empire I#0 - BTS) - The fascist Captain America's plot succeeded, establishing the planetary S.H.I.E.L.D. and trapping some of the most powerful heroes off-planet, while he took over the USA for Hydra.

(Secret Empire I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Quasar survived, but was left comatose. She was brought aboard Alpha Flight space station.

(Secret Empire I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Quasar remained comatose. Captain Marvel noted that she would be the only one powerful enough to bring down the planetary S.H.I.E.L.D..

quasar-kincaid-se8-full

quasar-kincaid-mcm8-coma (Mighty Captain Marvel I#8 (fb) - BTS) - While she was comatose, Quasar seemed to (ar at least seemed to recall that she had) hear Captain Marvel calling to her.

(Mighty Captain Marvel I#6) - Hyperion watched over the comatose Quasar.

(Mighty Captain Marvel I#7) - Hyperion visited the comatose Quasar, reporting to the arriving Captain Marvel that she had remained unresponsive.

(Secret Empire I#7) - Captain Marvel visited the comatose Quasar, sardonically noting that she was busy and the fact that she took the time to visit her every night and she didn't reply was very rude...and it wasn't their deal.

She told Quasar she needed her to wake up and help her fix this problem, which Captain Marvel considered largely her own fault.

(Ultimates2#100 - BTS) - Apparently unable to bring down the planetary defense field around Earth, Galactus/Lifebringer (Galan) told Captain Marvel "the power may heal, and there is one...if they could heal...yes. Return to your posts Ultimates. Know that now...there is hope." (see comments).

quasar-kincaid-se8-blast-shieldquasar-kincaid-mcm8-shieldshatter (Mighty Captain Marvel I#8) - Captain Marvel spoke to the comatose Quasar, asking her to wake up and come back to them, as they could not do it without her.

(Secret Empire I#8 / Mighty Captain Marvel I#8) - Reviving from her coma, Quasar told Carol she had heard her telling her to get up.

Quasar then assaulted the planetary S.H.I.E.L.D., this time shattering it down and letting the heroes back to Earth.

(Mighty Captain Marvel I#8 - BTS) - Quasar apparently vanished as the field went down.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) - Avril was believed to have perished.

(Mighty Captain Marvel I#9 - BTS) - Captain Marvel considered how Avril had surprised her with heroic nature.

(Valkyrie: Jane Foster#1 (fb) - BTS) - The Fast Five posted on their YouRoxx page that it had taken two Quasars to defeat them (see comments).

quasar-kincaid-gotg13-full

(Silver Surfer: Black) - The Black Order opened up a black hole and cast several heroes, including the Starjammers, Quasar, Cosmo, the Silver Surfer, Darkhawk, Adam Warlock, and many others, into the abyss.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI Annual#1 (fb)) - When the Silver Surfer used the Power Cosmic to get the other heroes out of a black hole, Quasar (Wendell Vaughn) used the Quantum Bands to push in the same direction. As he did so, the energies of the black hole's gravity, the Power Cosmic, and the Quantum Realm interacted somehome, and a brief portal opened up, allowing Quasar (Avril Kincaid) to call out to Wendell and tell him he "needed to..." before the portal closed.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#13 (fb) - BTS) - Wendell continued his search for Avril, and they eventually figured out how they could share/alternate existence in Earth's universe vs. (somewhere else...the Quantum Zone would seem to make the most sense, although the darkness makes the Darkforce dimension seem likely).

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#13) - On the planet Rimworld #360-3715 (aka Cauldron, secretly Ego the Living Planet), as a group of Guardians (Drax, Noh-Varr, Phyla, Quasar/Wendell Vaughn) investigated a Skrull mystic fire cult, when Phyla advised that they needed a spy more than a super hero, Quasar clanged the Quantum Bands together, exchanging places with Avril.

Avril then watched as Sister Talionis led a mystic ritual for the Brethren of the Forgotten Flame.
quasar-kincaid-gotg17-blast-mindless
(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#14) - From Talionis' ritual and with Intel from Kl'rt, Avril and the other Guardians learned that this world was perfectly located to triangulate the stars of ancient Skrull myth M'ro, Tor'l, and Yrynn. Avril questioned the odds of finding a previously undiscovered world in that location, leading Ego to reveal its true nature and assault them.

At Avril's query, Ego noted that it was not the god the Skrulls worshipped but rather its herald, after which Noh-Varr used his Nega-Gauntlets to transform the Guardians off-world to their ship, the Almond.

Avril considered switching places with Wendell, but Phyla advised that it was too late for his heroics. They thus watched as Talionis' ritual continued, covering the entire planet with a black coating, like an insect's egg.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#15) - Ten days later, aboard the Almond, observing the still-covered Ego with other Guardians (Drax, Gamora, Groot, Hercules, Rocket), Rocket explained to Avril that the numerous gathered ships belonged to the Galactic Rim Collective/Rimworlds, who had united following the Annihilation War.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#15 (fb) - BTS) - Avril exchanged places with Wendell.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#15 - BTS) - Two days later, Wendell and the other Guardians watched as the shell hatched, revealing Dormammu to have taken possession of Ego.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#15 (fb) - BTS) - Avril exchanged places with Wendell.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#16) - Quasar (Wendell) engaged Dormammu's Mindless Ones and saved Drax, Hercules, and Mantis in a Quantum sphere as the Mindless Ones destroyed their ship, the Tenant.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#17 (fb) - BTS) - On Spartax, Quasars Avril and Wendell alternated fighting the Mindless Ones at peak intensity for an hour and then swapping out and resting in the void while the other fought. quasar-kincaid-gotg18-clang

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#17) - Nova and Gamora approached Spartax and contacted Avril, who noted she was exhausted and at the end of her shift, after which she swapped out with Wendell.

(Guardians of the Galaxy VI#18) - Following Dormammu's defeat, the Guardians and other allies gathered at Gosnell's on Dolo Mayan to celebrate their victory. After awhile, Wendell exchanged places with Avril so she could join the festivities.

Comments: Created by Nick Spencer, Angel Unzueta, and Matt Yackey.

It worked out well for Avril that she did not lose her cool and be destroyed by the Quantum Bands like Wendell Vaughn's predecessor, William Wesley.

In her first appearance, Avril distinctly had a stud nasal piercing in her left nostril. It was less clear if she had one in the next issue, but by the time she became Quasar it was gone. I don't think it was shown again.

Initially, it seemed crazy to me that Quasar could wipe out a sky full of Chitauri in an instant in Captain America: Steve Rogers#8, but that she couldn't take down one leviathan/dragon in Secret Empire#0. However, it takes mental concentration and focus to wield the Quantum Bands, and I would imagine that -- still fairly inexperienced at this point -- she just became mentally fatigued and was overwhelmed.

Secret Empire I#7 has Captain Marvel telling the comatose Quasar that she couldn't do it without her and that she needed Quasar to wake up. It is similar to the talk in Mighty Captain Marvel#8 very shortly before Quasar woke up. However, I think Captain Marvel visited her every night and had a similar conversation, so I'm treating them as different conversations rather than overlapping...but maybe I'm wrong.

In Ultimates II#7, Adam Brashear narrowly escaped being eaten by a Chitauri leviathan, and he noted he wasn't sure he would have survived beaten eaten like Quasar was. Not really an appearance. So I'm leaving it in comments.

I missed the reference to Quasar in Ultimates2#100, but Rob London (aka Minor Irritant) was kind enough to point it out and explain to me! Essentially, Galactus contributed to Quasar's recovery.

It took Avril Kincaid and Wendell Vaughn to defeat the Fast Five in Pleasant Hill in Captain America: Sam Wilson#8, that's true. However, at the time, Avril had not yet become Quasar and was just using an energy blaster against five superhumanly swift combatants, and she took out for of them before being ambushed from behind by Blue Streak. Wendell Rand was retired as Quasar and was not wielding the Quantum Bands, and he treated Blue Streak in-kind by smashing him in the back of the head with a large book (which seems a little underwhelming to take him out given that he's wearing a helmet and Wendell is of normal (not even really athlete) strength.
But, anyway, they twisted the truth but weren't outright lying.

The Star-Lord profile is a bit of a mess, because when it was first done, it wasn't clear that it was not the Star-Lord of Reality-791...now it is clear, but we haven't gotten around to splitting off the profiles.

Marvel has been very insistent that the fascist Captain America associated with Pleasant Hills and Secret Empire is not an alternate reality Captain America. Kobik apparently altered the "real" Captain America's past to make him this person. I 100% agree that Kobik did not pluck an alternate reality version of Cap and replace Cap-616. She altered Cap-616's history...but only for him (and Elisa).
But the fascist Captain America's past is different than the past of Captain America-616 or the histories of anyone else on Reality-616 (except Elisa Sinclair, apparently)...Zemo-616 doesn't recall the past affiliations between himself and this fascist Captain America, because they didn't happen in Reality-616. And, of course, the Captain America with the Reality-616 history was eventually brought back and defeated his fascist counterpart.
But, the bottom line is that the fascist Captain America's history is not part of Reality-616. And, in an infinite Multiverse, every single reality possible exists, which means that there is a reality that parallels that altered history/reality of the fascist Captain America. That is Reality-61311.
Whether you considered it an extremely focal altered reality, ultimately affecting one or two beings, or whether you consider that Captain America was overlayed with an alternate history, he shares a history (at least up until his appearance in Reality-616 in Captain America: Sam Wilson#7) with the Captain America of Reality-61311.
I think the only viable argument against this is putting your fingers in your ears and saying, "La-la-la, I can't hear you."

This profile was completed 04/03/2022, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event...and then I decided to post it for Pride month.
