History:

(D.P.7. I#19/The Clinic) - Following the White Event on July 22, 1986 caused by the Star Brand, Curtis Smith was one of many people who discovered they had paranormal abilities. On September 16, 1986, Curtis joined the newly-opened Clinic for Paranormal Research in Wisconsin for help in controlling his parability. He was placed in Therapy Group B and took the nickname "Stalagmite."

(D.P.7. I#9 - BTS) - As the Clinic's staff Regulator, Receptor and Reinforcer reconditioned Randy O'Brien so that he would remain passive at the Clinic, Reinforcer gave him a dream in which Randy's Therapy Group C was competing in volleyball against Therapy Group B, including Curtis.

(D.P.7 I#16) - After Freefall and Tangler were placed in intensive care after being attacked by the Black Powers, Curtis was reassigned from maintenance work at the Clinic to serving as a security guard. Curtis was having breakfast at the Clinic's cafeteria with his fellow group members Sally and Martin one night when the Black Powers gang intruded and demanded they turn over the table to them. Curtis rose to face them, saying it was "first come, first served" but Martin told Curtis to stand down and let them have the table. As they walked away, Martin insisted to Curtis that they'd get back at the Black Powers once their own group was back at "full strength." Later, Curtis arrived just after Dave Landers had helped break up a fight between the DDTeens and Black Powers gangs.

(D.P.7 I#17) - Curtis and Dave responded to a fight in the Clinic between Scrap Iron and Bazooka. Curtis tackled Scrap Iron to the ground and held him in place thanks to his superhuman weight. He and Dave brought the two fighters to director Tanis Newhouse, who began arrangements for them to make restitutions. The next day director Newhouse held an assembly for all the patients and Curtis attended with his fellow therapy group members Wormhole, Freefall and Tangler. When director Newhouse ordered all the special interest groups at the Clinic to break up and return to their original therapy groups a riot broke out, during which Bazooka and Indigo tried to murder Freefall and Tangler. Stalagmite tried to restrain Bazooka by leaping on his back but in the chaos he accidentally struck his friend Wormhole in the back.

(D.P.7 I#18) - On December 23, 1987, Curtis stood on watch in the Clinic's infirmary where many paitents who had been injured during the riot were asleep. When Curtis fell asleep in the evening, Indigo snuck out of the infirmary and attempted to kill Charlotte Beck.

(D.P.7 I#21) - On January 4, 1988, deputies of the county sheriff's office came to the Clinic after the discovery of the bodies of the dead Clinic staffers Reinforcer and Receptor on the Clinic's grounds. The trigger-happy deputies and frightened patients were a bad mix as violence quickly erupted and soon all of the patients found themselves fighting for their lives, including Curtis. Curtis helped barricade the hallways and fight back against the deputies. He suffered an injury to his left arm but survived the battle. Curtis sent for an ambulance but informed Miss Newhouse that she shouldn't have tranferred from him maintenance to security because the Clinic needed "somebody to mop up the blood off the floors." Curtis told Miss Newhouse that most of the 16 deputies who entered the Clinic were dead and told fellow patient Naslund to assemble the bodies together. Curtis also informed Miss Naslund at least four patients had been killed. Miss Newhouse realized this catastrophe would mean the Clinic would have to be permanently shut down.

Comments: Created by Mark Gruenwald, Paul Ryan and Al Williamson.

Curtis' fate after the Clinic was closed is unrevealed but one would assume that, like Bazooka, he would have been forced to enlist in the Paranormal Platoon.

Stalagmite and the rest of Therapy Group B first appeared in D.P.7 I#9 as characters in a dream forced upon Randy O'Brien as part of the reconditioning Regulator, Reinforcer and Receptor were putting him through. The dream suggests Randy was familiar with all the Therapy Group B members, who would have all been at the Clinic behind-the-scenes during the events of D.P.7 I#1. Stalagmite's parability wasn't shown until issue #17.
