History:
(D.P.7. I#19/The Clinic) - Following the White Event on July 22, 1986 caused by the Star Brand, Deborah Brownlea was one of many people who discovered they had paranormal abilities. On September 8, 1987, Deborah went to the newly-opened Clinic for Paranormal Research for help in controlling her parability. She was placed in Therapy Group B and took the nickname "Dementia."
(D.P.7. I#9 - BTS) - As the Clinic's staff Regulator, Receptor and Reinforcer reconditioned Randy O'Brien so that he would remain passive at the Clinic, Reinforcer gave him a dream in which Randy's Therapy Group C was competing in volleyball against Therapy Group B, including Deborah.
(D.P.7 I#17) - Deborah attended the first meeting of a women group at the Clinic, organized by Sally Gallagher and including Pamela Leighton, Charlotte Beck and Sponge. As they were getting started, Deborah noticed Sponge trying to get Dave Landers' attention. Deborah surmised Sponge had a crush on Dave and thought they'd make a great couple. Charlotte was reluctant to commit to Sally's group. Later that day Deborah attended an assemby at the Clinic with the rest of the women's group. When Clinic director Tanis Newhouse told all the patients they would be breaking up their special interest groups and returning all patients to their original therapy groups, a riot broke out among the patients. Deborah went to fight alongside the other women's group members. The riot ended when Lenore Fenzl used her parability to paralyze everyone in the room.
(D.P.7 I#18) - On December 23, 1987, Deborah was still recovering from the riot in the Clinic's infirmary and had to use a wheelchair due to injuries she evidently suffered during the fight.
(D.P.7 I#21) - On January 4, 1988, deputies of the county sheriff's office came to the Clinic after the discovery of the bodies of the dead Clinic staffers Reinforcer and Receptor on the Clinic's grounds. The trigger-happy deputies and frightened patients were a bad mix as violence quickly erupted and soon all of the patients found themselves fighting for their lives, including Deborah. Dementia used her parability on two of the deputies, driving them insane as they whimpered before her. She survived the fight with the deputies unscathed but many of the other patients and several deputies were killed. This catastrophe resulted in the Clinic being shut down permanently.
Comments: Created by Mark Gruenwald, Paul Ryan and Al Williamson.
Dementia and the rest of Therapy Group B first appeared in D.P.7 I#9 as characters in a dream forced upon Randy O'Brien as part of the reconditioning Regulator, Reinforcer and Receptor were putting him through. The dream suggests Randy was familiar with all the Therapy Group B members, who would have all been at the Clinic behind-the-scenes during the events of D.P.7 I#1. Dementia's parability wasn't revealed until the Clinic profile in D.P.7 I#19 and wasn't shown in the book until her last appearance, issue #21.
