History:

(D.P.7. I#19/The Clinic) - Following the White Event on July 22, 1986 caused by the Star Brand, Pamela Leighton was one of many people who discovered they had paranormal abilities. On September 21, 1986, Pamela became a patient at the Clinic for Paranormal Research to receive help in controlling her parability. She was placed in Therapy Group B and took the nickname, "Interface."

(D.P.7. I#9 - BTS) - As the Clinic's staff Regulator, Receptor and Reinforcer reconditioned Randy O'Brien so that he would remain passive at the Clinic, Reinforcer gave him a dream in which Randy's Therapy Group C was competing in volleyball against Therapy Group B, including Pamela.

(D.P.7 I#15) - As Clinic patients had been taking on staffing positions to help the short-handed Clinic staff, Pamela worked in food preparation in the cafeteria alongside Jeff Walters.

(D.P.7 I#17) - Pamela attended the first meeting of a women's group at the Clinic organized by Sally Gallagher and including Deborah Brownlea, Sponge and Charlotte Beck, although Charlotte was reluctant to join them. Later, Pamela joined the other members of the women's group at an assembly held by Clinic director Tanis Newhouse. When director Newhouse ordered all of the patients' special interest groups to break up and return to their original therapy groups, a riot broke out. Pamela exuberantly joined the fray yelling, "Let's party!" Grabbing Randy O'Brien she started using her parability on him, against his objections. The riot quickly ended when Lenore Fenzl used her parability to paralyze everyone in the room.

(D.P.7 I#18) - On December 23, 1987, Pamela was disturbed when a fight broke out in the halls between Charlotte and Indigo. Although Dave Landers insisted there was nothing for Pamela to worry about he asked Scrap Iron to escort Pamela to her room and stay with her until she felt safe. The next morning, Pamela went to serve breakfast in the cafeteria alone, as Jeff Walters was nowhere to be found.

(D.P.7 I#21) - On January 4, 1988, deputies of the county sheriff's office came to the Clinic after the discovery of the bodies of the dead Clinic staffers Reinforcer and Receptor on the Clinic's grounds. The trigger-happy deputies and frightened patients were a bad mix as violence quickly erupted and soon all of the patients found themselves fighting for their lives, including Pamela. Pamela was with Sally and Scrap Iron when the fighting started and he advised the two women to make a run for it with him. As they ran past two deputies, Sally was shot, possibly fatally. Pamela joined other patients in barricading themselves against the deputies. In the chaos that ensued, Pamela was shot. When the violence at the Clinic ended, the facility was forced to shut down permanently. Scrap Iron carried Pamela in his arms, but it was unclear whether her injury was fatal.

Comments: Created by Mark Gruenwald, Paul Ryan and Al Williamson.

Mark Gruenwald clearly liked the surname Leighton since he also gave it to Rachel Leighton, alias Diamondback.

Interface and the rest of Therapy Group B first appeared in D.P.7 I#9 as characters in a dream forced upon Randy O'Brien as part of the reconditioning Regulator, Reinforcer and Receptor were putting him through. The dream suggests Randy was familiar with all the Therapy Group B members, who would have all been at the Clinic behind-the-scenes during the events of D.P.7 I#1. It's interesting to note that Pamela flirted with Randy in the dream; she also showed interest in him in issue #17, suggesting she'd flirted with him sometime behind-the-scenes of D.P.7 I#1.

It's been my reading that Pamela and John had a thing going on behind-the-scenes, based on Dave telling John to escort Pamela to her room and keep her company in D.P.7 I#18. When Dave remarked in the morning that she'd "survived the night," Pamela responded, "Why, yes... thank you." That slight hesitation in her voice made me wonder - given what her parability does - if she and John had been intimate together. She was also next to him throughout D.P.7 I#21 and he was holding her after the fight. Heck, why should the main characters get all the drama?
