History:
(D.P.7 I#19/The Clinic profile) - Terry Wilke was a paranormal who
gained his superhuman powers after the White Event (a cosmic event
caused by the Starbrand).
He arrived at the Clinic for Paranormal Research on October 14, 1986.
He was assigned to Therapy Group D, which included Merriam Sorensen,
Dwight Frye, John Rost and Jim Walkins. Terry was given the nickname
"Thrust."
(Kickers, Inc. I#5) - When the Kickers, Inc. team of investigators visited the Clinic wanting to know more about the facility after hearing from seven former patients that it was a front for criminal activities, the Clinic's director Philip Nolan Voigt conducted a tour of the Clinic, showing them a training area where several of the patients were practicing their powers. Terry was seen using his power to set a log on fire.
(D.P.7 I#21) - After former clinic staffer Abner Heath alerted the media and the police to the true nature of the Clinic, the local sheriff and deputies from his office came to investigate the Clinic. When the patient Bazooka reacted violently to the deputies' presence and killed one of them, a conflict soon escalated throughout the Clinic as the deputies began opening fire on the Clinic's patients. Terry was in the Clinic's swimming pool with the staff's physical therapist Juris Ziegler when two deputies burst in carrying guns. Startled, Terry fired one of his blasts at a deputy, causing him to burst into flame. Ziegler tried to tell Terry not to use his power but the second deputy shot Ziegler in the back, possibly killing him. Terry joined many of the other patients at the Clinic in fighting back against the deputies. Many of the deputies were slain during the resulting siege. One of the deputies shot Terry in the stomach. It was not revealed whether Terry survived the injury. As a result of the deaths of patients, Clinic staff members and the deputies, the Clinic was permanently shut down.
Comments: Created by Tom DeFalco, Mark Gruenwald, Paul Ryan and Sam de la Rosa.
Immediately following D.P.7 I#21, Bazooka turned up in the U.S. Army due to the draft. One can assume that all the adult male paranormals who were at the Clinic when it was closed were likewise drafted into the army but it wasn't confirmed whether Thrust lived through the siege, much less if he was drafted.
The funny thing about Thrust is that the Clinic profile in D.P.7 I#19 states that he was first identified in issue #21. As in, two months before his name was revealed, we knew his name! Even then, he was just called "Terry" in D.P.7 I#21.
What's really odd is that Terry was absent during D.P.7 I#17, when virtually all of the patients were called to a meeting. Since we learned virtually nothing about Terry, I wondered whether his power made him particularly dangerous and he deliberately kept away from the other patients. The most likely explanation, though, is that until Gruenwald tallied up all the Clinic patients for the feature in D.P.7 I#19, he'd forgotten about that guy depicted projecting flame in Kickers, Inc. I#5.
When you get right down to it, the entirety of Terry's appearances are contained in just three panels across two comics. He's got a pretty involved history for someone that minor!
