Powers/Abilities: In her human form Melati's legs have been severed below the knees, inhibiting her movement. In her reptillian form, in addition to possessing a full pair of legs she can also quickly regenerate from grevious injuries. She has demonstrated the ability to regrow a severed arm within seconds. Her reptillian form also increases her strength to an enhanced level and heightens her agility. She possesses a prehensile tail, sharpened claws on her fingers and fangs in her mouth. While she was an Initiative cadet she was frequently outfitted with sophisticated S.H.I.E.L.D. technology such as pulse rifles, jetpacks, S.P.I.N. darts and a hover-bike.

History:

(Avengers: The Initiative Special I#1 (fb)) - As a teenager, Melati Kusuma had her driver's license for only six weeks when she went driving recklessly and wound up in an accident. As a result of the accident both of her legs were amputated.

Merlati credited her subsequent good grades on that she didn't "have a life." Accepted into Empire State University with a full scholarship, she studied biochemistry and wound up as an intern to Dr. Curtis Connors. Connors was aware that Merlati applied for an internship with him because she wanted to regrow her limbs using his Lizard formula. Therefore, Connors promised to work with Merlati to perfect the serum so that it wouldn't harm her. Merlati pretended to agree, but after a few months of working with Connors she took the serum from Connors' laboratory, having made improvements which she considered "good enough." The serum successfully regrew her limbs and transformed her into a reptillian humanoid. Connors was mad at Merlati for betraying his trust but also impressed that she her version of his serum proved stable and she experienced no ill effects on her mental status. However, Merlati's version of the serum was keyed to her own DNA and could not be used on anyone else.

(Mighty Avengers I#1 - BTS) - As Iron Man and Ms. Marvel were selecting the new line-up of Avengers, Komodo appeared on their computer screen among dozens of other Initiative members who were under consideration.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#1) - Following the newly enacted Superhuman Registration Act, Komodo arrived at Camp Hammond alongside other superhumans who had registered for training, including Armory, Bengal, Cloud 9, Hardball, Rage, Slapstick, Thor Girl (a Skrull impostor), Trauma and Ultragirl. They were welcomed by the Avenger Yellowjacket (actually the Skrull spy Criti Noll) who explained that those who passed the 50-State Initiative's program would be assigned to one of the new state-sponsored super hero teams being formed. Yellowjacket turned them over to their drill instructor, the Gauntlet and endured their first round of basic training then received their official uniforms which included fatigue camo pants. Komodo joined fellow cadets Armory, Cloud 9, Hardball, M.V.P. and Trauma for a training session but when Trauma used his power to transform into Armory's greatest fear - a giant spider - Armory became terrified and fired off random blasts of energy from her weapon, one of which severed Komodo's right arm. Although Komodo regrew her arm almost immediately, another blast struck M.V.P. in the head and killed him. Armory was washed out of the program. Henry Peter Gyrich ordered the other cadets to remain silent about what happened.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#2) - Komodo went through an obstacle course alongside other cadets. Later, all of the cadets were sent into the field to aid S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers against a Hydra terror-carrier assault. They were issued pulse rifles and jetpacks, which prompted Hardball to complain they hadn't been trained on the equipment but Komodo dismissed his concerns. During the fight Komodo assaulted a Hydra jet and tore open the cockpit. Yellowjacket destroyed the terror-carrier himself and later Komodo joined him at the White House Rose Garden where he was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his actions.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#3) - As the cadets returned to Camp Hammond aboard a S.H.I.E.L.D. plane, Komodo fell asleep and reverted to her human form. Hardball was both startled and attracted when he saw her human form including her missing legs. Awakening, Komodo resumed her reptillian form and demanded to know what Hardball saw but he pretended he didn't notice anything. When the Gauntlet restrained her she claimed she was only upset because Hardball had seen her secret identity. Back at Camp Hammond, the cadets went through a series of training under experienced super heroes, such as Hellcat, who taught Komodo how to administer CPR without her superhuman strength. Later the Thing challenged the cadets to a sparring match and easily held his own against them, complaining that Komodo's ineffectual grasping at his finger would hurt his bowling game. Curt Connors visited and watched the sparring match while expressing his concerns about the military applications of his formula. After the session Hardball invited Cloud 9 and Komodo to spend some recreation time with him but both blew him off as Komodo was summoned to a meeting with War Machine and Yellowjacket. Yellowjacket explained to Komodo how S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Initiative were using S.P.I.N. technology to remove superhuman powers from vigilantes and wanted her aid in targeting Spider-Man. Komodo went into the field riding a S.H.I.E.L.D. hover bike vehicle alongside War Machine. While War Machine drove off Spider-Man's enemies Boomerang, Hydro-Man and the Shocker, Komodo went after Spider-Man himself, ignoring his protests that he was on their side. War Machine explained that because Spider-Man was in rebellion against the Superhuman Registration Act. As Komodo tried to inject Spider-Man with the S.P.I.N. dart prepared for him he taunted her as a "dollar-store version of the Lizard" and suggested her superiors would use the technology against her one day. This idea caused Komodo to flinch and Spider-Man escaped them. Distraught, she begged War Machine to never take away her powers.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#4) - Komodo joined other cadets on a ten mile run. Hardball complained that Cloud 9 wasn't part of the hike and Komodo commented that she thought Cloud 9 was doing something inappropriate with her mentor Justice. When the Hulk and his forces from Sakaar assaulted Manhattan as part of targeting members of the Illuminati, Komodo and other cadets were sent to Manhattan to assist crowd control under Triathlon's leadership but not to engage the Hulk. Now afraid of losing her powers, Komodo complied but also joined Hardball, Rage and Slapstick in stopping looters. They observed Iron Man's battle with the Hulk and were shocked when the Hulk defeated him. Rage decided to break ranks and lead a team against the Hulk but Komodo refused to join them.

(WWH: Damage Control I#1-3) - Komodo was among the heroes who assisted in search and rescue efforts under the direction of Damage Control following the Hulk's assault on Manhattan. Like other heroes, Komodo was roughed up by the Chrysler Building when it attained sentience.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#6) - Komodo endured another drill session under the Gauntlet during which he continually used the disgraced New Warriors team as a epithet against them. When the Gauntlet was subsequently found beaten (at the hands of Slapstick) all of the former New Warriors on the base were confined and questioned. Cloud 9, Hardball and Komodo went to a training session together during which Cloud 9 told them she had seen M.V.P., alive (actually a clone created by Yellowjacket and Baron von Blitzschlag). Their discussion was broken up by Yellowjacket who ordered them to never say M.V.P.'s name again.

(New Warriors IV#4) - Komodo, Cloud 9 and Hardball briefly fought against the Zodiac but were swiftly defeated.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#8 (fb) - BTS) - Komodo joined Cloud 9, Hardball, Triathlon and Thor Girl in battle against Dragon Man. Dragon Man was attracted to Komodo because of her reptillian nature and became docile, allowing the team to capture him.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#8 (fb)) - Komodo, Cloud 9, Hardball, Triathlon and Thor Girl brought Dragon Man to Camp Hammond so he could be dispatched from there to Prison 42 in the Negative Zone. When the Constrictor heard how Dragon Man was beaten he mocked Komodo for "flashing some tail" but she replied that she and Hardball were now in a relationship. Gyrich then introduced the assembled heroes to their new drill instructor Taskmaster, then brought in the camp's newest cadets. Komodo and Hardball left to make out in a supply room but when Hardball told her he knew her powers came from Connors' Lizard formula he encouraged her to share her real form with him, revealing he saw her missing legs before. Komodo assumed her normal body and asked if Hardball was really okay with her. He answered, "we're all damaged goods."

(Avengers: The Initiative I#10) - While looking for Ultragirl, Cloud 9 inadvertently walked in on Komodo and Hardball having sex in the female cadets' dorm. Komodo was worried Cloud 9 might have seen her human form but Cloud 9 warned them that KIA (a clone of M.V.P.) was on a murderous rampage on Camp Hammond. Komodo and Hardball joined other heroes from the camp against KIA, whose memories of M.V.P.'s death made him want to kill Cloud 9, Hardball and Komodo, but although Komodo was wounded in the stomach by KIA's attack she healed from the injury. Baron von Blitzschlag told the three cadets about the other M.V.P. clone he had sent to live a normal life and that they would need to use a device he built to obtain a brain scan from the clone in order to halt KIA's rampage. The three went to Bulls Gap, Tennessee to find the clone but were halted by the rogue New Warriors cadets, who thought they had come to assault the clone.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#11) - Slapstick restrained the three cadets as they tried to explain the threat of KIA but KIA himself soon burst upon the scene. Komodo tried to help Hardball restrain KIA but he injected Komodo in the legs with Rigellian Snake Venom, the fastest poison in the universe. With less than a minute to save her life, Hardball chose to amputate her legs to prevent the poison from spreading. Komodo was distraught at seeing her legs blown off, despite knowing they would regrow. Hardball consoled her. KIA was finally beaten by the cadets and the Avengers.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#12 (fb)) - After the fight, Debrii, Justice, Rage, Slapstick and the Scarlet Spiders chose to leave the Initiative and refused to return to Camp Hammond with the others.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#12) - Iron Man held a hearing into the death of Michael Van Patrick, while Hardball helped Komodo into a dress for Trauma's funeral. As Komodo, Cloud 9, the Gauntlet, Hardball and Thor Girl gathered by Trauma's coffin, Trauma arose from his coffin, his powers having saved his life. After the hearing was over, Iron Man held a graduation ceremony for the cadets Cloud 9, Hardball, Komodo, Thor Girl, Trauma, Triathlon and Ultragirl, who all donned new costumes and were assigned to different states for their Initiative teams. Komodo was assigned to Arizona while Hardball was assigned to Nevada. Hardball was disappointed but promised he would visit Komodo at every chance he could.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#16) - The Desert Stars were responding to a power outage emergency in Phoenix, Arizona when the Skrull Kill Krew intervened, revealing to them that their teammate Blacksmith had been replaced by a Skrull. Komodo helped them kill the Skrull, permitting 3-D Man to shoot the Skrull through its chest while she was grappling with it as her regeneration powers meant she could survive the hit from 3-D Man's gun. After 3-D Man explained there were Skrulls on every Initiative team, Komodo insisted they go to Las Vegas so she could warn Hardball.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#17) - Soon after, Komodo and the Skrull Kill Krew joined with Hardball's team the Heavy Hitters to kill their Skrull infiltrator. When 3-D Man confirmed Hardball wasn't a Skrull Komodo felt validated, still believing Hardball was someone she could trust.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#18) - The assembled heroes carried on to Billings, Montana to aid Freedom Force against their Skrull infiltrator. The Skrull then informed all the remaining Initiative teams that each of them had a Skrull infiltrator to help occupy them and warn their moles. By the time Komodo and the other heroes arrived in Georgia, home of the Cavalry, Ultragirl was in battle with the Skrull who had been impersonating Thor Girl. Just after 3-D Man killed the Skrull, Komodo discovered Ant-Man on Cloud 9's back, revealing that he had been spying on them. Ant-Man informed the heroes the Skrulls were going to send all of the Initiative bases into the Negative Zone.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#19) - Komodo and Riot were teleported by Devil-Slayer to Florida to assist their team the Command against their Skrull impostor. Komodo then joined many other Initiative heroes as they converged on Camp Hammond to stop the Skrulls there from activating the Negative Zone weapon. She also witnessed the death of Crusader, who was shot in the head by 3-D Man, unaware Crusader had always been on their side.

(Avengers: The Initiative Special I#1) - When Zzzax attacked the Hoover Dam on the Arizona/Nevada border, the Heavy Hitters and Desert Stars again worked together to resolve the situation. Komodo and Hardball held back from the fight, observing how their respective teams had difficulty working together. To demonstrate their own teamwork, Komodo served to distract Zzzax, holding him still in one place long enough for Hardball to create a sphere inside him, then expand it until Zzzax was dispersed. The two celebrated with a kiss, while both of their teams marveled at their teamwork.

Afterward, Komodo went to visit the Heavy Hitters' base, which was inside a hotel and casino. Komodo and Hardball had a romantic evening, during which Hardball revealed his brother had superhuman strength yet suffered a terrible injury, which had propelled him into his current identity. This inspired Komodo to tell her own origin story to Hardball. However, Komodo detected that Hardball was interested in the Lizard serum and so claimed she had obtained it from Curt Connors' low-security laboratory in Los Angeles. The next day Nonstop brought Komodo back to Phoenix using her superhuman speed.

Komodo went to Connors' Los Angeles laboratory to await Hardball's arrival as he indeed did attempt to steal the Lizard serum. Hardball confessed that he was actually an agent of Hydra sent to infiltrate the Initiative. Komodo offered to give him a sample of her blood to satisfy Hydra, but then contacted the Heavy Hitters, claiming that Hardball was a double agent who would lead them to his Hydra superiors. Senator Arthur Woodman, Hardball's superior in Hydra, exposed himself to the formula and transformed into a massive reptillian monster to fight the Heavy Hitters. Hardball finally killed Woodman but refused to go along with Komodo's attempt to redeem him, believing that he would only bring Komodo down. Hardball left with Hydra.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#20) - Komodo attended a briefing the Gauntlet held for the Shadow Initiative team as their next target would be her ex-lover Hardball. The Gauntlet informed them Hardball was running a Hydra training camp in Madripoor. Komodo arranged to provide her intimate knowledge of Hardball only if she could be the one to capture him.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#21) - Komodo and the Shadow Initiative performed a HALO jump from a S.H.I.E.L.D. aircraft into Madripoor.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#22) - Mutant Zero reported to the team that, as suspected, Madame Hydra was no longer running Madripoor, which had reverted to Tyger Tiger's control. Just then they were surrounded by a Hydra team led by Hardball and Scorpion.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#23) - Komodo attacked Hardball but he shot her with one of the S.P.I.N. darts he had stolen from the Initiative. The dart immediately robbed Komodo of her superhuman powers and thus she lost her legs. Seeing their plan had unraveled the Shadow Initiative fled, leaving Melati in Hydra's clutches.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#24) - Hardball told Melati that Hydra was after the regeneration serum in her blood and that if she permitted him to take a sample it would be better for her than what Hydra's scientists would do. Melati angrily replied that Hydra had never helped his brother as they promised and becoming a traitor had done nothing to help his family. Agents from the newly-formed H.A.M.M.E.R. ultimately extracted Melati and the Shadow Initiative and took Hardball as their prisoner. Norman Osborn had the S.P.I.N. dart's effects nullified, restoring Melati's powers.

(Marvel Assistant-Sized Spectacular I#1/3) - The Desert Stars pursued the villain Cottonmouth but the trail brought them to a Navajo Nation reserve and the local authorities reminded the Desert Stars they were outside their jurisdiction. Instead, the local hero American Eagle took charge of the case.

(Avengers: The Initiative Featuring Reptil I#1) - Batwing, Cloud 9, Komodo, Prodigy, Sunstreak and Tigra contacted teenager Humberto Lopez to recruit him for the Initiative, which he joined under the alias Reptil. Komodo trained Reptil how to use his tail in combat and warned him not to be too trusting of others (based on her experience with Hardball). Komodo later helped Reptil in battle against Stegron. Komodo briefly fell under Stegron's mental control because she was similar enough to a dinosaur to be affected by his powers. Reptil ultimately made peace with Stegron after learning he was only trying to rescue Moon Boy from the US government and restore him to the Savage Land.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#26) - With the Initiative now under Taskmaster's leadership, Komodo admitted to him that she wasn't impressed by the super-villains who had been brought in to fill up the Initiative's ranks and asked to be sent back to her team in Arizona. Taskmater refused because he needed to rebuild the Shadow Initiative so that it could reclaim the Initiative Prison 42 base in the Negative Zone, intending to turn the one-time elite force into a supply of canon fodder.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#27) - Komodo attended one of Taskmaster's training sessions at Camp H.A.M.M.E.R. Later she accompanied the Shadow Initiative in their assault on Prison 42.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#27/2) - Komodo used the invulnerable Butterball as a distraction to help their forces gain ground. Hardball had been forced to assist the Negative Zone's forces against the Initiative but when he saw Komodo was among the attackers he advised the other prisoners to release Dragon Man against her, knowing that as before she could make Dragon Man obey her. Sure enough, Dragon Man turned against the prison's defenders. Hardball's actions impressed Taskmaster, who welcomed him back into the Initiative.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#28) - Hearing that Hardball was back, Komodo informed Taskmaster she wouldn't serve on the Initiative with him. Taskmaster replied that if she refused to serve he'd take away her powers. Refusing to abandon her principles, Komodo surrendered her powers and left the Initiative.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#29) - Melati sought out Tigra, who had joined the Avengers Resistance against Osborn and offered to help Tigra find the Resistance's captured teammate Night Thrasher. Melati's one condition was that they accept her as a member. Tigra wondered if Melati would be any help without her powers but Melati noted she was still a brilliant biochemist and had inside information on Camp H.A.M.M.E.R. Tigra welcomed her to the team.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#31) - Melati officially joined the Avengers Resistance led by Justice, Tigra and Ultragirl, operating from a safehouse formerly belonging to the Cat People. As Night Thrasher rejoined the team he was introduced to Melati. Melati had discovered that the criminal U-Foes had been making big bank deposits in Charlotte, Virginia.

(Avengers: The Initiative I#35) - While the powered heroes fought the villains assembled at Camp H.A.M.M.E.R., Melati confronted Baron von Blitzschlag in his lab. To her surprise she was reunited with Cloud 9 and Hardball. While Cloud 9 restrained her, Hardball injected a syringe into Melati which nullified the nanites inhibiting her powers. Komodo refused to accept that Hardball had truly reformed. Cloud 9 stood up for Hardball, insisting he had truly reformed and noted that he had always prevented Komodo from being harmed. Komodo grudgingly agreed to work with Hardball while Baron von Blitzschlag offered to surrender in return for a lenient punishment.

Soon after, the 50-State Initiative was placed under the authority of Steve Rogers while Norman Osborn was arrested. Komodo joined with many other heroes from the Avengers and Initiative as they celebrated at Avengers Tower.

(Avengers Academy I#13) - Komodo joined other young people who were invited to the Avengers Academy to celebrate prom with their students. Komodo immediately took notice of Reptil (not recognizing him because a recent time travel adventure had altered his age) and began dancing close to him as she flirted, saying she'd love to see him in his dinosaur form. She assumed Reptil was older than her and told him she was "done" with men her own age. As her tail began to playfully press against Reptil, she asked him why he was still single; Reptil then revealed he was only 16 and just appeared to be in his thirties. Komodo was flabbergasted and accused him of trying to get her arrested. As Reptil tried to note that she had been speaking so quickly that he didn't have an opportunity to explain she further claimed her tail brushed up against him by accident and he couldn't prove intent. This annoyed Hardball, who accused Reptil of trying to hit on his girl; Komodo fired back, "I'm not your girl anymore, blondie." Hardball and Reptil started to fight but Giant-Man broke up the altercation. Hardball and Komodo began to argue and fight but then kissed, having apparently decided to resume their relationship. Later Hardball joined his powers with Speedball to fill the dance floor with their respective power effects and Komodo joined the other guests in enjoying the experience.

(Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt I#1) - In the midst of a devastating assault on Earth masterminded by the deity known as "the Serpent," Steve Rogers authorized the reestablishment of the Initiative under the leadership of Prodigy. Komodo agreed to rejoin the Initiative and sought out Cloud 9 to convince her to join them. Cloud 9 was reluctant to come back because of the bad memories she had during the Initiative's operation. Later, Komodo joined the other returning Initiative members in Washington D.C. as Prodigy addressed the crowd. Hardball began cozying up to Komodo but she insisted that he refrain from public displays of affection. Komodo tried to explain that although they had made up they weren't a couple but Hardball suggested the "sneaking around" was "hot."

In the days that followed Komodo returned to serving in the Desert Stars to help deter looters and robbers who were taking advantage of the present crisis.

(Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt I#2) - Komodo joined the Heavy Hitters against other looters in Las Vegas. Komodo checked in again with Cloud 9 but she wasn't answering her phone. Prodigy contacted them to inform them the Juggernaut was heading towards Las Vegas.

(Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt I#3) - The Initiative heroes in Las Vegas tried to battle the Juggernaut but were ineffective. Komodo helped evacuate civilians from the path of destruction but some were so afraid they refused to be moved. Hardball was preparing a massive blast to strike the Juggernaut and told Komodo if the civilians didn't leave then they had chosen to die; unable to make the civilians evacuate, Komodo witnessed their deaths at Hardball's hands; Juggernaut was unaffected by the blast.

(Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt I#4) - Komodo found Hardball and accused him of killing civilians. With Cloud 9, she helped search for survivors in the rubble caused by Juggernaut's assault. Gravity was enraged by Hardball's callous attitude towards death and beat him up; when Komodo tried to stop him Gravity lashed out at her, injuring her. When Gravity turned to help Komodo, Hardball tried to hit Gravity again and their collision caused a massive earthquake.

(Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt I#5) - Telemetry checked on the wounded Komodo. As the heroes began to repair all the damage caused by Juggernaut, Hardball and Gravity, Komodo was happy to see Cloud 9 had survived the chaos unscathed.

(Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt I#6) - Komodo observed as Thor Girl reverted to her identity of the Designate and rescued the other Initiative members who had been lost in the confusion, including Hardball, then she left Earth. Komodo and the other Initiative members helped clean up the damage in Las Vegas and she again affirmed her relationship with Hardball.

(Avengers Academy I#26) - Komodo and Hardball joined other former Initiative members in joining the Briggs Foundation's team created by Jeremy Briggs for supposed philanthropic ends. When Briggs went to Avengers Island to recruit other superhumans to his team Komodo joined him alongside Hardball, Prodigy and Cloud-9 and briefly fought the Avengers until both sides were challenged by Jocasta to present their respective cases. Komodo noted that by working with Briggs she was coming close to finding the key to regrowing missing limbs. Ultimately Jocasta, Machine Teen, Rocket Racer and Veil chose to join Briggs' team.

(Avengers Academy I#37 - BTS) - Briggs was later killed by X-23, ending his Briggs Foundation team.

(Fearless I#2/2) - Komodo went to Night Nurse for help with an inhibitor collar she had been wearing. The collar was intended to prevent other reptillian creatures from controlling her mind but the device had started to corrode and begun an infection in her neck. Night Nurse asked her to revert to human form but Komodo was reluctant to do so because she was still ashamed of her legless body. Before Night Nurse could help her Stegron invaded the Night Nurse's office and tore the collar from Komodo's neck then placed her under his will. Stegron brought Komodo to his laboratory and started to explain his plan for her when suddenly the temperature dropped - due to Night Nurse changing the thermostat - and Stegron went to sleep. Night Nurse was able to safely rescue Komodo and ensure Stegron was taken into custody. Komodo apologized to Night Nurse for not following her instructions earlier. Night Nurse invited her out for pastelillos, affirming their new friendship.
