History: (X-Force#119 (fb) - BTS) - Smoke presumably was secretly recruited by X-Force team manager Coach, not for X-Force, but for Coach's own rather unrevealed purposes.

(X-Force I#119) - When the Orphan refused to turn over young mutant Paco Perez to the Coach, the Coach sent Smoke and Succubus to attack the Orphan for not doing as ordered. Smoke got several good hits in on the Orphan before the Orphan's X-Force teammates arrived and a battle quickly erupted between X-Force and Smoke, who had been looking forward to battling X-Force, and Succubus, with the Anarchist blasting Smoke. Orphan ultimately feigned compliance and the Coach called Smoke and Succubus off.

(X-Force I#120) - After the Coach attempted to force himself onto the drugged X-Force member U-Go Girl, prompting the Orphan to intervene, the Coach summoned Smoke and Succubus to attack the Orphan once more. Smoke held the Orphan while Succubus slashed open the Orphan's protective costume and the Coach stabbed the Orphan with a knife but the X-Man Wolverine soon arrived to assist the Orphan, having been secretly sent there by X-Force camerman Doop. The Coach quickly ordered Smoke and Succubus to deal with Wolverine but Wolverine soon slashed the semi-solid Smoke in half and tossed his corpse off the roof of X-Force Tower while the Orphan knocked Succubus unconscious.

Comments: Created by Peter Milligan and Michael Allred.

Smoke must have been still partially flesh, as Wolverine slicing him in two seemed to have major detrimental effects on his health, but like most sand/smoke/mist/gas based beings, reforming is always a possibility.

Smoke had a profile in Marvel Encyclopedia HC Vol. 2: X-Men (2003).
