History:
(Daredevil I#500 (fb) - BTS) - Hundreds of years ago, Izo joined the Hand for idealistic reasons, but he watched the Hand slowly sink into dishonor over a period of years. Izo blinded himself then left the Hand. Later, Izo helped form the Chaste, as a counter-balance to the Hand, and he trained young initiates.

(Daredevil: Ninja#3 (fb) - BTS) - According to Stone, the Chaste was first formed centuries ago with seven members, and they pitted themselves against the Hand in part to take control over the warrior soul of the ancient Japanese prince Yamato-Take, the mystical prince from 110 A.D. who wielded the magic sword Grasscutter.

(Daredevil II#114 (fb) - BTS) - Master Izo trained a young Stick as a ninja.

(Elektra II#19 (fb) - BTS) - After World War II, the Chaste was able to recruit many former soldiers into their ranks, including an American named Drake. After training with them, Drake returned to America.

(Elektra II#19 (fb) - BTS) <1953> - Drake returned to the Chaste with his children, a boy named James and a girl. The Chaste began training James while expecting the girl to do the cleaning, but Stick recognized significant potential in the girl and didn't intervene when James secretly started training his sister.

(Daredevil I#500 (fb) ) <1954> - Stick informed Izo that he was being ousted as the leader of the Chaste due to his frequent trips to the mortal world to drink and gamble. Izo left willingly.

(Elektra II#19 (fb) - BTS) - Three years later Stick "discovered" James training his sister and pitted the brother and sister against the rest of the Chaste, telling them that the last to fall may stay among the Chaste, and the girl won. She trained hard for years until her anger got the better of her and she accidentally killed another initiate, causing Stick to kick her out, and she ended up in the ranks of the Hand, who tricked her to murder her brother as her initiation.

(Daredevil I#188 (fb) - BTS) - Stick trained each of the initiates to the Chaste, and eventually all members of the Chaste's leadership known as the Seven were former trainees of Stick.

(Daredevil: Ninja#3 (fb) - BTS) - Stone grew to believe that the soul of Yamato-Take was placed in the body of Stick.

(Daredevil I#190 (fb) - BTS) - Stick led the Chaste, training them in a remote home at the top of a nearly impenetrable mountain. They conducted their war with the Hand and searched for new warriors to train. At one point, Stick kicked one trainee out, and he became a Sensei in Japan.

(Elektra II#19 (fb) - BTS) <1972> - The Chaste fought the Hand in Luxembourg, and the girl Drake killed both her father in battle.

(Daredevil: The Man Without Fear#2 (fb) - BTS) - Stick and Stone argued about how to continue the cause of the Chaste, moving it forward to the future, as they sensed Elektra could have a darkness within her. Stick sensed another adept in America, a young Matt Murdock. Stick went to America to train the young man.

(Daredevil II#500 (fb)) - After Matt Murdock was blinded and received super-powers, Izo visited the boy in the hospital, then called Stick to inform him about Matt.

(Daredevil I#501 (fb) - BTS) - Izo warned Stick that only one of two souls would be capable of taking down the Hand once and for all, and one of them was Matt Murdock. (The other was Elektra).

(Elektra: Root of Evil#1 (fb) ) - When 12-year old Elektra climbed the mountain to find the Chaste, she was overcome by the snowstorm. When she first saw Stone and Stick standing there, she pictured them as the Tengu, ninja demons that she had heard of, but they snapped her out of it and brought her inside.

(Elektra: Assassin#1 (fb) - BTS) - Young Elektra trained hard with the members of the Chaste: Stick, Stone, Claw, Wing, Shaft, Flame, and Star. She wanted to be called Sai, but Stick simply called her Snot throughout her training.

(Elektra: Root of Evil#2 (fb) ) - While training in the harsh winter, Elektra briefly mentally communed with Stick, sensing his old pain of leaving behind his family to join the Chaste. Reliving her old pain as well, she tried connecting with Stick, but he just focused back on her training. Elektra heard the group call themselves "Crusaders for Decency" once.

(Elektra: Root of Evil#3 (fb) ) - Stick forced Elektra to train in a dark cave, one that Stone had warned her meant death. Elektra yelled that Stick was trying to punish her because she'd learned about his wife and daughter, but he made her go in anyway. Eventually, she was kicked out of the Chaste as they found her soul too dark.

(Daredevil: The Man Without Fear#2) - When Matt Murdock's father Jack Murdock was killed, he chose a path of violence. Stone visited Stick, encouraging him to keep training the boy, but Stick argued that Murdock was lost.

(Daredevil I#190 (fb) ) - After the murder of her father Hugo Natchios, Elektra, now 19 years old, tried climbing the mountain to the Chaste again, but she fell short. They carried her among them and Stone felt she didn't belong, but Stick pushed Stone to let her try and become one of them. They trained her for a full year and she excelled. Just as Stone began to believe in her, Stick realized Elektra's pain was too great and she as not learning to find peace and could never be one of the Chaste. He asked her to leave. Stone worried that the enemy might recruit her, and Stick realized it was likely.

(Daredevil I#187 (fb) - BTS) - Stick called the seven of the Chaste to a meeting at the apartment of Matt Murdock in New York City.

(Daredevil I#187) - When only four (Stick, Claw, Shaft, and Stone) of the seven attended the meeting, Stick assumed that the others had been hunted by the Hand. He reasoned that Matt Murdock could be made one of them. Just then, Matt entered the room as Daredevil and collapsed, begging for help as his super-senses were out of control.

(Daredevil I#188) - Members of the Chaste watched Black Widow pass by Matt Murdock's apartment; they let her go in peace. Stick reassured the Chaste that Matt had what it took to be one of them, reminding them that he'd trained each of them. When Kirigi attacked, the Chaste fought back: Shaft fired arrows, Claw hit with his razor -sharp claws, and Stone killed him with his swords. Matt came out of the tank in time to see the battle. Just then, Black Widow entered, poisoned and seemingly dissolving.

(Daredevil I#189) - Stick ordered Stone to resurrect Black Widow after she died, even when the Chaste protested that involving two outsiders in their quest was too many. Dozens of the Hand then attacked and the Chaste killed as many as they could, with Daredevil and Black Widow aiding in the fight. When Claw was killed in combat, Stick and Shaft touched hands and used their powers to kill the remaining dozens of Hand members, but Stick and Shaft were overcome with the energy and dissolved, leaving only Stone with Daredevil and Black Widow.

(Daredevil I#296 (fb) - BTS) - Stone recruited Spear to the Chaste, not realizing he was loyal to the Hand.

(Daredevil I#296) - Stone, Spear, Flame, Star, and Wing of the Chaste, arguing about tactics now that Stick was dead, attacked a Hand warehouse in New York City, where Izanami and Jonin, as well as many ninjas, were battling Daredevil, while keeping several civilians strung up, including Christine Harris, Jerry “the Whale” Sabini, Derek Tully, and Pamela Sennet. After defeating the ninjas, the Chaste liberated the civilians, then Spear battled Izanami before she fled outside, where the police waited, and Izanami was shot and killed. The Chaste quickly faded away. In civilian clothes, Stone soon reached out to Matt Murdock, saying they needed further help from the Hand, and Daredevil soon joined the Chaste as they waited for Izanami to come back to life and attack them. Spear turned on the others, knocking out Star as Izanami attacked. A massive fight broke out and Izanami tried to kill Daredevil, but Spear rushed in to do it himself. Daredevil defeated Spear, then used his weapon to kill Izanami. Stone comforted Daredevil, reminding him that Izanami wasn't even human.

(Daredevil I#320 (fb) - BTS) - After the death of Elektra, the Chaste realized she had left some of her essence behind, and that the Hand planned to corrupt that essence.

(Daredevil I#320) - The Chaste, including Stone and Flame, met to discuss the Hand's plans. Stone took a Sai and planned to end the Hand's plans himself.

(Daredevil I#321) - Stone attacked Budo, of the Snakeroot, in his apartment.

(Daredevil I#324 (fb)) - Stone realized that Elektra's corpse was pure, and he no longer worried about seeking to contain the darkness within her.

(Daredevil I#324 (fb) - BTS) - Stone took Elektra's corpse back to the Chaste for preservation.

(Daredevil I#324 (fb) - BTS) - Seeking to stop the Snakeroot from using Eddie Passim and the About Face virus from reviving Erynys with Elektra's dark influence, Stone attacked Enteki, trying to stop him from kidnapping Passim. A fight broke out with Daredevil and Morbius involved.

(Daredevil I#324) - Morbius tried attacking Stone, but found his skin impenetrable. Stone stabbed Morbius with his sais while Enteki escaped with Passim. Daredevil chose to get Morbius medical help instead of going after Passm, frustrating Stone. As Morbius stabilized, Stone discussed the threat of Erynys, and Morbius agreed to help them track the virus. Stone and Daredevil followed Morbius through the city only to be attacked by John Garrett and Ernynys. Stone shrugged off Garrett's gunfire before Erynys stabbed him with two sais in the back.

(Daredevil: Fall From Grace TPB) - Led by Star the Chaste went through a ritual to dismiss Elektra from the Chaste for becoming an assassin again after her resurrection. Wing began the ceremony, then Wing ordered Claw, Flame and Star to recite the Chaste's mantra to complete the ritual.

(Daredevil I#326) - Elektra saw Stone get medical help and she promised to return him to the mountain, though Stone was worried about her after the fight with Erynys. Claw, Flame, and Star entered the room, chastising Elektra for her sins, but she accused the Chaste of staying on their mountain preaching of decency while the world fell around them.

(Elektra: Root of Evil#1) - Elektra visited the Miyazaki Prefecture in Shikoku, Japan, where she sparred with Stone, who gave her advice on healing the deep wounds within her. Elektra asked Stone to support her in changing the cause of the Chaste, but he refused.

(Daredevil I#350) - Members of the Chaste battled Daredevil at the request of Stick. Daredevil left them defeated after a savage fight.

(Elektra I#18 - BTS) - Elektra took Nina McCabe to the mountain of the Chaste and she climbed to the base, where Stick knocked Elektra back to the ground while allowing Nina to stay.

(Elektra I#19 (fb) ) - Members of the Chaste began training Nina as one of them. One morning, they woke to find their gates breached by the Hand, led by a massive Kuroyama, and the Chaste was quickly overwhelmed by their enemies. One member of the Chaste was attacked by Nina directly as she hit him, scarring his face. He fell down the mountain and chose to go after Elektra, who he believed was to blame for Nina's betrayal. The Hand chased him through Burma, Nepal, and the Golden Triangle, and he finally arrived in New York, several arrows sticking out from his body.

(Elektra I#19) - The Chaste initiate attacked Elektra, telling her what had happened, but he soon realized that she was innocent and he had betrayed his own code to seek vengeance. As he lay dying, he told Elektra that she must restore the Chaste, and she vowed she would.

(Daredevil: Ninja#2 (fb) - BTS) - Stone helped the Chaste peacefully live while gathering numbers, growing up to around 300, but the Hand began attacking savagely as they regrouped, and Stone soon found the numbers of the Chaste slimmed down to five, including Stone and female initiate Trahn.

(Daredevil: Ninja#3 (fb) - BTS) - The Hand stole the sword, Grasscutter. Stone believed he had identified the reincarnated soul of Yamato-Take in the infant, Karen, and believed that he could find Grasscutter and reunite it with the baby to give the Chaste the upper hand.

(Daredevil: Ninja#1) - Trahn broke into Daredevil's apartment and stole Stick's staff. Daredevil pursued her and sparred with her and another member of the Chaste for a time, but they knocked Daredevil out and put him on a plane after drugging him, bringing him to Japan.

(Daredevil: Ninja#2) - Daredevil woke in Japan, and Stone explained that they'd sparred with him to see how good his combat skills were. He explained what had happened to the Chaste, and Daredevil suggested that he, Stone, and Trahn break into the Hand's headquarters to investigate. They took the fight to the Hand, and Daredevil called the authorities to arrive behind them. Stone and Trahn prepared to head back to New York with Daredevil.

(Daredevil: Ninja#3) - On the plane back to New York, Stone telepathically explained to Matt how the sacred sword, Grasscutter, had been stolen, and that they needed to reunite it with the soul of Yamato-Take. At the airport, the Hand attacked them, and Matt rushed off to get his Daredevil costume on. Stone and Trahn used Daredevil to help them fight off the Hand, the Trahn and another Chaste member rushed away, not telling Daredevil where they were going. They soon secured the adoption of baby Karen, taking her home to the Chaste in Japan.

Comments: Created by Frank Miller (writer) & Klaus Janson (artist).

The Chaste was initially set up as a counter-group to the Hand, and subsequently given hundreds of years of history. It at times seems very selective with its membership, only allowing the most worthy of members to join and kicking them out for small infractions; at other times, its ranks swell with initiates to the hundreds. A lot of the history of the Chaste had been retroactively added, with the histories of Master Izo and Yamato-Take only added in the most recent appearances.

There is also the problem with Elektra not even remembering who Stick was when she should actually know him from her first time with the Chaste as a young teenage girl due to retcons. The Chaste (or at least Stick) probably screwed with her mind after she was kicked out the first time.
--Markus Raymond

There are, at times, seven primary members of the Chaste, and they seem to have individual skills and interests, but Stick and Stone are the most enduring and consistent members to show up, each of them demonstrating their own powers. Certain members of the Chaste can channel life energy, killing and reviving others with simple focus. Stick is the most consistent example of this.

Yamato-Take's story has connections to the actual history/mythology of Japan.

PRINCE YAMATO-TAKE

(Daredevil: Ninja#3 (fb) - BTS) - In Japan in 81 A.D., a young prince was one of 80 children born to Emperor Keiko the 12th. When the prince was 16, a rival emperor, Takeru, of the Kumaso in Kyushu, took up arms against the empire, and Yamato-Take disguised himself as a serving girl to sneak into Takeru's camp, where he killed Takeru. As Takeru died, he named the prince Yamato-Take, which means "the brave hero of Japan".

In 110 A.D., more rebels rose against the Imperial Court, and Yamato-Take prepared for battling, stopping at Ise Shrine to pray. There, his aunt, Princess Yamato-Hime, the high-priestess of the shrine, gave him the sacred sword of Kusanagi-No-Tsurugi.

(Daredevil: Ninja#3 (fb) ) - When the enemies set fire to the rice fields, the prince discovered the sword had magical properties, and he used it to cut the flaming grass.

(Daredevil: Ninja#3 (fb) - BTS) - The sword, known as Grasscutter, was considered an important symbol of Japanese Imperial regalia, and a cornerstone to samurai society, and as such it was enshrined. Once when it was stolen by a Korean Buddhist, the gods forced the man to return it.
