Base of Operations: Yamal Peninsula, Siberia, U.S.S.R
First Appearance: Psi-Force#1 (November, 1986)
Functions: The Siberian Project was the facility within which paranormals in the USSR were brought and trained to serve the state.
Training and punishment were meted out as the director saw fit, and a frontal lobotomy was on the table of options for a dangerous paranormal.
In addition to physical training facilities and combat rooms, the facility had hospital rooms, meeting rooms, operating suites, etc.
It was staffed by various medical
professionals, including medical doctors, surgeons, psychologists, and
nurses.
History:
(Psi-Force#1 (fb)) - When
Anastasia Inyushin -- who had a high ESP (Extra-Sensory Perception)
score and who had been sent to live with her aunt and uncle in the USA
-- returned to the USSR after her aunt and uncle's deaths, she was
intercepted by Serge Vladimiroff and his associates, who told her that
her parents had died but assured her that "we" would take care of her.
Stasi appreciated that he was KGB.
(Psi-Force#1 (fb) - BTS) - Vladimiroff took Stasi to the Siberian Project where she was examined and tested regularly.
(Psi-Force Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) <July 22, 1986> - The White Event -- a release of Star Brand
energy that blanketed the Earth and granted two (IIRC?) out of every million
people paranormal powers -- occurred.
(Psi-Force Annual#1 - BTS) <July 23, 1986> - Stasi developed healing powers.
(Psi-Force#28 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, Serge Vladimiroff recommended that the Siberian Project be transformed from a research center into a paranormal studies institute. He wished to keep the paranormals isolated away from civilization, allowing him to work without constant committee interference.
(Psi-Force#1 (fb)) - Stasi became the center of attention at the Siberian Project.
(Psi-Force#1 (fb) - BTS) - Vladimiroff told Stasi that the state had big plans for her.
(Psi-Force#1 (fb) - BTS) -
Emmett Proudhawk, a CIA agent and fellow paranormal, broke into the
Siberian Project and convinced Stasi to flee with him.
(Psi-Force#1 (fb) - BTS) - Vladimiroff and his men pursued Proudhawk and Stasi.
(Psi-Force#1) <August 6, 1986> - Vladimiroff and his men, as well as Mindwolf, confronted Proudhawk and Inyushin in San Francisco, who were aided by Michael Crawley, Tyrone Jessup, Kathy Ling and Wayne Tucker, other paranormals gathered by Proudhawk. Although Mindwolf slew Proudhawk, the other five paranormals united their powers to manifest their collective "Psi-Hawk," which fried Mindwolf's mind. Vladimiroff was incapacitated when Crawley exploded his machine gun, and he presumably returned to the USSR shortly thereafter.
(Psi-Force#28 (fb) - BTS)
- <Sometime before October, 1986> - The Siberian Project began gathering Soviet paranormals.
(Psi-Force#23 (fb) - BTS) - Coojeechiscue
was appointed field leader of the Siberian Project's Red Sun
Paramilitary Task Force, based out of the Siberian Project, a Soviet
scientific institute for paranormal research.
(Psi-Force#23 (fb) - BTS / Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) - The paranormals of Red Sun assisted in Afghanistan. The Siberian Project considered this "Afghanistan affair" an abysmal performance (see comments).
(Psi-Force#23 (fb) - BTS) - The young autistic boy Dehman Doosha remained difficult for the staff at the Siberian Project to control. They tended to use physical assaults to contain him.
(Psi-Force#17 (fb)) <8 months before the main story> - The Siberian Project's subject Rodstvow awakened from his coma, after which he used his powers over time to progressively slay a number of staff members.
(Psi-Force#23) <April 4, 1988> - Vladimiroff
returned to the Siberian Project where Gennadi Shepalev gave him updates on the Red Sun members as well as Rodstvow.
(Psi-Force#27
(fb) - BTS) <April 5 or soon thereafter, 1988> - After destroying the Psi-Hawk, Rodstvow teleported back
to the Project grounds, bringing
with him the four surviving teenagers whose parabilities had formed the
Psi-Hawk mind gestalt: the adrenaline siphon Thomas Boyd, object empath Lindsey Falmon, telekinetic Kathy Ling and
telepathic Wayne Tucker (Crawley had left the group, Jessup had remotely animated
Psi-Hawk with his electromagnetic projection ("astral self"), and Inyushin
had perished saving her teammates from enemies; while Boyd and Falmon had
more recently joined the group).
Boyd, Falmon, Ling and Tucker were comatose from the
psychic damage they had suffered, and they were hospitalized
(Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) <Early July, 1988> - Thomas Boyd's EEG (electroencephalograms) first showed renewed activity.
(Psi-Force#27
(fb) - BTS) <August 5, 1988> - Boyd leeched a doctor and nurse of
all of their energy (perhaps fatally?) and immediately revived.
Boyd then began fervently
reconditioning his body to its finely honed athletic peak with a
complete disregard for his surroundings or the conditions of his
friends.
(Psi-Force#27
(fb) - BTS) <approximately August 21 (2 weeks before September 4, 1988> - Kathy Ling emerged from her coma.
(Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) <September 3, 1988> - Ling began to speak and eat in a routine manner, although she remained extremely disoriented and weak.
(Psi-Force#27
(fb) - BTS) <September 4, 1988> - Lindsey Falmon had begun to show EEG activity but remained comatose. One of the male nurses repeatedly
disrobed her.
Although Tucker seemingly remained
unconscious, his continuous flurry of mental transmissions kept most of
the bewildered staff away from him.
(Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) - (Presumably) Dehman Doosha's room went up 25 degrees in his room in the last two days.
(Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) <September 4, 1988> - Acting Administrative Director Petrov Szymanski submitted a journal entry reviewing the progress of the Psi-Force youths.
(Psi-Force#27) - At Gennadi
Shepalev's request, Anya Zotov reported on Boyd's violent training and
presumed desire to beat his captives. As an extreme solution for an
extreme individual, she noted that the would put a bullet in his head
while he was sleeping.
Upon hearing of the nurse's disrobing of Falmon, Shepalev ordered that nurse to be shipped out immediately.
When Ling began screaming upon
seeing her mirror reflection showing her her shaved head, she
telekinetically lashed out at nurse Bova. A doctor rushed in to give
her a sedative injection, but she telekinetically bent the needle.
Shivowtnoeh then arrived and restrained Ling, causing her to panic and
lose control of her telekinesis, allowing the doctor to sedate her.
(Psi-Force#27) - A Siberian Project meeting consisted of Gennardi Shepalev, Petrov Szymanski, Serge Vladimiroff, Anya Zotov, and Red Sun's Nadehzda (Coojeechiscue) and Leonid Vishnevetsky (Sillatochca).
After Shepalev and Szymanski discussed the danger of the young Dehman
Doosha to the project (with Szymanski suggesting terminating the
youth), Leonid brought up seeing his family. Vladimiroff ridiculed his
needs and performance, provoking Leonid to lash out with his explosive
power, but Nadehzda contained him with powers.
Boyd forced Fetisov to help him
get into the computer system so he could learn more about the
pyrokinetic youth. Fetisov revealed that there was a lobotomy planned
for "Dehman Doosha."
Touching her new nurse's tray,
Lindsey Falmon observed memories and emotions of those who had touched
it, including the nurse's affair with someone else in the facility as
well as Leonid's concern for his family. When she fainted, the nurse
pocketed Falmon's meds, considering that someone else would probably be
willing to pay for her pills.
During the planned surgery,
however, the telekinetic youth overwhelmed the heavy level of
anesthesia and set aflame not only the operating room but also
shattered the glass to the observation room, threatening the observing
Szymanski and Shepalev (+/- Nadehzda and Leonid...it was hard to tell who was there).
Tohev and others arrived in
flame-retardant suits, planning to try to use the carbon dioxide
canisters to subdue him, but the boy generated an immense fiery dragon
to threaten them. Boyd then rushed into the room and got the youth's
attention, convincing him to stop. Calling the youth "Johnny," Boyd
then reported to the Project leaders that he had taken control of the
communications center and had terminated the procedure as well as that
he would be taking care
of "Johnny."
(Psi-Force#27) - To force the Project's
compliance, Boyd threatened to erase every file in their system, but he
also offered to let them kill him if he failed to make progress with
Johnny. Vladimiroff and Shepalev accepted the deal, and Vladimiroff
subsequently advised the others that if Boyd succeeded, they would have
a pyrokinetic solider of limited intelligence and that, if he failed,
they had resources with which to blackmail Boyd into submission,
namely the other Psi-Force youths.
(Psi-Force#28 (fb) - BTS) <September 25, 1988> -
In his diary, Serge discussed the compromise with Boyd, the efforts to
control the "paranormal plague" brought on by the White Event, the
paranormals at the Siberian Project (notably those from Psi-Force and
Johnny Do/Dehman Doosha). He considered that if these children could be
properly manipulated, the rewards would be innumerable, but questioned
which buttons should be pushed. He further considered that he needed to
find out quickly because he was not the only one there hoping to
control these beings, and that he never felt that his desires matched
those of his peers.
(Justice#28 - BTS) - With his daughter, Angie, having been injured
during the battle between Rodstvow and Psi-Hawk, Justice joined forces
with the Medusa Web to take down Rodstvow and liberate the Psi-Force
youths, although Justice considered executing Psi-Force for their
involvement.
(Psi-Force#28) <October 3,
1988> - Vladimiroff watched from the observation booth -- critiquing
Red Sun and confirming his assessment of Ling's limitations -- as Kathy
Ling overpowered the rest of Red Sun but collapsed in fear when
confronted by Shivowtnoeh.
As he returned to his quarters,
Leonid collided with Lindsey Falmon, who automatically projected
images/feelings of his family and told him they were OK.
Soon after, Ling used her telekinetic powers to force her way to visit her seemingly comatose teammate Wayne Tucker. Although she departed peacefully, Vladimiroff confronted her, bringing Shivowtnoeh to intimidate her.
Tucker struggled to reach the autistic Johnny, achieving some satisfation when Johnny put a hand on his shoulder.
At 12:30 AM, Ling confronted Vladimiroff in his room, noting that Tucker had telepathically told him that Vladimiroff had been lying to her about Boyd and other things. She telekinetically lifted him into the air, threatening to kill him if he continued to manipulate her or her friends.
Leonid visited Falmon, who used
the necklace given to him by his wife, Zoya, to give him an update on
her family. She assured him he would be reunited with his family if he
helped her.
(Psi-Force#28) <October 4, 1988> - The next morning, Vladimiroff surprised Ling at a planned training session, having Shivowtnoeh leapt down and slashed her back. However, backed by telepathic guidance from Tucker, Ling defeated Shivowtnoeh and broke Vladimiroff's jaw and fingers. Vladimiroff presumably went into medical treatment and/or departed, as he was not seen again.
(Psi-Force#29) <October 5,
1988> - Alongside Gennadi Shepalev, Szymanski watched from the booth as Coojeechiscue,
Shivowtnoeh, and Sillatochca engaged in "free-for-all" combat in the
Combat Situation Room. Gennadi
provided constructive criticism, but Szymanski
interrupted, chiding the paranormals on a pathetic performance.
Szymanski, Shepalev, Anya Zotov, and Coojeechiscue subsequently met to review the status of things, and Gennadi and Anya both expressed concerns with evidence of the awakening of the telepathic Wayne Tucker. After Szymanski stated that the Americans (Psi-Force) could escape any time they wanted and that no one could stop them. Anya and Shepalev noted that they still had Rodstvow.
(Psi-Force#29) - As Falmon and Leonid began gathering her allies, starting with Ling, the Medusa Web assaulted the Siberian Project, with Skybreaker first taking out the radar tower and then Justice and some of the Web's paranormals then entering the facility.
![]() (Psi-Force#29) - As the Medusa Web helicopter took off, Petrov Szymanski instructed the soldiers and Coojeechiscue to scramble what remained of their defensive forces to hunt down and kill all involved with the escape.(Justice#29) - As Soviet MI-24 helicopters closed on the Medusa Web, forcing them to a planned location, Szymanski noted that they were almost within range and ordered his troops to inform outpost six to be ready for them. With their helicopter under fire from the Soviet troops, Ling telekinetically blew up one of the Soviet helicopters. After the Soviets downed the Medusa Web's recon chopper, Soviet troops ambushed the Web operatives and Justice when they landed to rescue their associates. Another copter delivered Coojeechiscue and Shivowtnoeh (and more Soviet troops) to join the fight. |
(Justice#29) - With some control room, Szymanski heard his name called
out but was surprised that no one else had heard anything. Suspecting
this to be Rodstvow speaking telepathically, he rushed out of the room,
instructing his lieutenant to keep on top of things, and he would be
right back. As he approached Rodstvow's quarters, he called out to the deadly and maddened paranormal, asking if it was him, but Rodstvow interrupted, asking where were the "Psi-Hawk children. I want them." Szymanski told him that they were gone, but that he had them pinned down in sector six, and Red Sun would be...but Rodstvow interrupted again, telling Szymanski that he need not worry about them and that when he (Rodstvow) returned, "you needn't worry about anything again." Hearing Rodstvow's telepathic laughter, Szymanski appreciated that Rodstvow meant that he would kill him. (Psi-Force#30 - BTS) - Justice and the Medusa Web and Psi-Force members destroyed Rodstvow. Coojeechiscue noted that all those injured could be brought to the Project, and she gave her word that they would all be treated properly. |

The Siberian Project's location in the Yamal Peninsula is given in Rodstvow's profile in Psi-Force#23.
However, in Psi-Force#27, Wayne Tucker apparently
calls out to Babel of the Medusa Web, telling him that they were in the
"Yalta Peninsula."
The latter is apparently in error, as per Wikipedia, at least, Yalta is a city in the Crimean
peninsula in the Ukraine, while the Yamal Peninsula is confirmed as being in
Siberia.
I think the error lies with Wayne Tucker being a young American and just
confusing the two somewhat similar names.

The Siberian Project has no known connections to
![]() .. <September 4, 1988> - After Kathy Ling recovered sufficient consciousness for nurse Bova to show Ling herself in the mirror, Ling flipped out upon seeing that her head had been shaved. As Ling telekinetically cast various objects about the room, nurse Bova futilely told her (in Russian, which Ling could not understand) to relax, as her hair would grow back. Telling nurse Bova to stand back, an unidentified doctor rushed in, intending to inject Ling with some sort of sedative; however, Ling swiftly bent the needle into a useless curve. The monstrous Shivowtnoeh then rushed in and restrained Ling, whose terror rendered her unable to use her telekinesis and allowed the doctor to sedate her (presumably using a new needle). --Psi-Force#27 Note: She may or may not have been unable to understand English to some extent, but she apparently only spoke English. |
![]()
Fetisov apparently served as the translator to Thomas Boyd, among
others. He was fluent in Russian and English, at least.(Psi-Force#27) - Upset after having witnessed the soldiers/security beating on an autistic pyrokinetic paranormal, a frustrated Thomas Boyd broke out of his room and then crossed some wires in the rudimentary security system to break into Fetisov's room. Instructing Fetisov to take him to the communication center/central computer system, Boyd carried him through the hall, draining the energies of a guard they encountered en route. As they arrived at the communication center, Boyd instructed Fetisov to instruct the guard to open the door for him or he would drain them both, and Fetisov advised the guard to use his keycard to avoid being drained by the paranormal leech. Inside the center, Boyd considered the computer system to be like the one he learned in eighth grade, although he still needed Fetisov to translate. When he instructed Fetisov that he was going to call up whatever he was instructed to do, Fetisov asked why, and Boyd advised him because he (Fetisov) didn't want to die; Fetisov agreed that that was a good reason. Boyd then instructed Fetisov to bring up everything on the pyrokinetic youth, and Fetisov first noted how he had been called "Dehman Doosha," meaning "the demon within." When Boyd demanded to know if the boy's autism was genetic or because of the project's abuses, Fetisov searched the database and revealed -- under coersion of being leached a minute at a time -- that the Project's doctors were scheduled to perform a lobotomy on the boy in five hours. Boyd then asked if Fetisov could link them up to the operating room equipment, noting that they were going to "tear down this psycho-ward!" (Psi-Force#27 - BTS) -Boyd subsequently reported to the Project leaders that he had taken control of the communications center and had terminated the procedure as well as that he would be taking care of "Johnny." To force the Project's compliance, Boyd threatened to erase every file in their system --Psi-Force#27 |
![]() (Psi-Force#27 - BTS) - Dehman Doosha was scheduled for a lobotomy to eliminate his uncontrolled pyrokinetic abilities.
However, Dehman Doosha apparently incinerated Tohev and then formed a fiery dragon, causing one of the other men to exclaim Tohev's name and another to express concern over the dragon. Their flame retardant devices were useless against the dragon. Thomas Boyd then rushed into the room and got the youth's attention, convincing him to stop. One of the fireman noted that the fires had stopped and the boy was calming down. He wondered how this was happening. Calling the youth "Johnny," Boyd then returned to the communications center and reported to the Project leaders that he had taken control of the communications center and had terminated the procedure as well as that he would be taking care of "Johnny." After the Project leaders agreed to Boyd's demands, one of the firefighters noted that they still had to get to Totev's body. Another firefighter wondered what if the boy started...but then he realized that the boy was sitting down peacefully. --Psi-Force#27 Note: Only three men were seen to be rushing into the operating room/suite in their initial appearance, with one of them giving instructions to Tohev. When a man burst into flames and cried out, three men in flame retardant suits were seen as one cried out to/for Tohev. My interpretation is that Tohev was the man out front as they rushed into the room and the one who was incinerated. It makes sense that a fourth firefighter was just not seen when the others rushed into the room in the initial panel. Despite the name similarities, Tohev seemed to be one of the firefighters, while Nurse Totev was a completely different character. |
![]() Nurse
Totev, at least, participated in the care of the telepathic Wayne
Tucker. She was apparently somewhat proficient in combat or was just
brave enough to put on such a front when confronted with a larger young
man.(Psi-Force#29 (fb) - BTS) - Presumably in mental contact with Babel, Wayne Tucker either helped coordinate or simply was aware of the Medusa Webs' impending assault on the Siberian Project. (Psi-Force#29 - BTS) - When the assault occurred, Wayne directed Thomas Boyd and Johnny Do to his (Tucker's) room. Despite his telepathic abilities, Wayne had remained physically immobile and could not walk under his own power. Boyd took out a Project staff member and used his card to enter Tucker's room. (Psi-Force#29) - As Boyd and Johnny entered the room, a doctor or someone else in the background told Nurse Totev to stop them. Speaking Russian, Totev confronted the larger Boyd, warning the "boy" not to make her hurt him. Tucker telepathically advised Boyd to watch out for her as she was like a truck with bad breath, and Boyd replied that he could not hit a woman her age..."too much!" (Psi-Force#29 - BTS) - Boyd -- carrying Tucker -- and Johnny walked the halls of the Project soon after, joined up with Medusa Web members, and escaped with them. --Psi-Force#29 I believe it came be safely assumed that the extremely athletic and combat proficient Boyd indeed took down Nurse Totev. Note: I had a note about Nurse Totev appearing in both Psi-Force#27 and 29. I am aware of Tohev being in #27, but I can't find Nurse Totev in #27, or #28 for that matter. Let me know if you find any reference to Nurse Totev in another issue beyond Psi-Force#29. |

This nurse was having an affair with someone (apparently male and
presumably a doctor) in the Project.(Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) - The nurse apparently encountered Leonid Vishnevetsky, the paranormal Sillatochca of the Red Sun Paranormal Task Force, who touched the tray on which she carried medications. (Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) - The nurse made out with her boyfriend in what appeared to be a storeroom. (Psi-Force#27) - The nurse visited Lindsey Falmon's room, greeting her and telling her it was time for her medication. Although the nurse knew of Lindsey's object empath powers and that she was not to let Falmon touch anything, the previously immobile Lindsey sat up suddenly and grabbed the nurse's tray. Via this contact, Lindsey glimpsed the nurse as she made out with her boyfriend in the storeroom, after which Lindsey glimpsed Leonid, feeling his love for his family, whom he missed very much. The intensity of Leonid's feelings overwhelmed the still weak Lindsey, and she passed out again. Briefly noting sympathy for the "poor dear," the nurse then pocked her medications and considered that someone would be willing to pay for her pills... --Psi-Force#27 Note: Well, at least this nurse was a step up from Lindsey's previous nurse. |
|
(Psi-Force#27 (fb) - BTS) - Either before or after Lindsey had begun to demonstrate EEG activity, but definitely before she had regained consciousness, one of her male nurses repeatedly disrobed her, although he did not do anything beyond that. Unbeknownst to this nurse, his activities were observed by Anya Zotov. (Psi-Force#27) <September 4, 1988> - Zotov reported the nurse's disrobing of Falmon to staff psychologist Gennadi Shepalev, who ordered that nurse to be shipped out immediately. --Psi-Force#27 |
