History:
(FF: Fifty Fantastic Years#1) - Evelyn Necker was born to British
high-tech mercenary Stealth (Eliza Necker), leader of the Requiem
Sharks, and her teammate Smart, who embraced their love for each other
after meeting a time-traveling adult Evelyn Necker of Earth-616
(FF: Fifty Fantastic Years#1) - Note: Due to her parents appearing on Earth-616 without a child only a few years before an adult Evelyn joined Project: PEGASUS it is very likely her parents raised her in Earth-616's past or another reality.
(FF: Fifty Fantastic Years#1) - Raised by her loving parents, Evelyn excelled in many scientific fields and, after gaining a PhD in robotics, was approached by her parents' former employers A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics).
(Nova IV#23 (fb) - BTS) - Necker sometimes worked for
A.I.M.,
believing they were about working for a better world, lead by science.
(Nova IV#17 (fb) - BTS) - Necker became robotics head at Project PEGASUS. As such she was line chief to Robert Rider, brother of Nova (Richard Rider). She used the Warguards data collected at PEGASUS to start the Minion project.
(Nova IV#18 (fb) - BTS) - However, Necker didn't have a reliable power source to activate the Minion project.
(Nova IV#17 (fb) - BTS) - Necker extracted an exotic radiation from the Negative Zone and contained it within a quantum flask. She was unaware that it was actually Quasar (Wendell Vaughn)
(Nova IV#17) - Six weeks after the extraction of the exotic radiation, Skrull's invaded Earth and targeted PEGASUS. Necker helped remove and reboot the Xandarian Worldmind from Nova and placed it inside an experimental gestalt mainframe intended for the Minion project. The quantum flask opened, releasing Quasar.
(Nova IV#18) - As Necker and Robert collated data on what had happened, the Worldmind appeared to them. It activated the Minion project in defense of PEGASUS.
(War of Kings: Darkhawk#1(fb) - BTS) - Necker dealt with booby traps left over from the Skrull invasion.
(Nova IV#19 (fb) - BTS) - PEGASUS became a temporary base of operations for the newly reformed Nova Corps, and Necker became attracted to Richard Rider.
(Nova IV#19) - Necker greeted Richard as he returned from an encounter with the Serpent Society.
(War of
Kings: Darkhawk#1(fb) - BTS) - Necker was dealing with a Skrull booby
trap when it caused a blast that temporarily shut down the PEGASUS
containment grid. A couple of the U-Foes escaped their cells.
(War of Kings: Darkhawk#1) - Necker informed Darkhawk of the U-Foes escape, only moments before they were approached by Vector. Darkhawk dealt with the villain, but his amulet began playing up. Necker reached out to him, and was struck down for her troubles. Darkhawk quickly apologized, and fled for fear of doing more harm.
(Nova IV#22 (fb) - BTS) - Necker and PEGASUS monitored the Worldmind's mass recruitment of thousands of people worldwide.
(Nova IV#22) - Necker, Quasar and Director Gruenwald of
PEGASUS met with Richard Rider, who had been stripped of his powers, to
discuss the Worldmind. Rider asked them to test him for signs of mental
instability caused by his long term possession of the full Nova force.
Gruenwald proposed using an isolation chamber to isolate and study a Nova centurion for signs of the Worldminds manipulations, and Rider suggested Necker lure one in.
(Nova IV#22 (fb) - BTS) - Rider's tests showed him to be mentally healthy. Necker contacted Robert Rider, who was dealing with a hurricane with fellow Nova centurion Irani.
|
(Nova IV#22 (fb) - BTS) - Necker saw the results
of Richard Riders biopsy results. (Nova IV#22) - Necker informed Richard that his body had suffered long term damage from containing the full Nova Force, causing irreversible molecular decay that would kill him in under 48 hours. (Nova IV#23 (fb) - BTS) - Necker and Gruenwald worked on a means of fighting Richard molecular decay. However, PEGASUS was taken over by HAMMER. Gruenwald was suspended. Necker was fired and informed her contract wouldn't be renewed. She secretly took Quasars cosmic flask, planning to give it to A.I.M. (Nova IV#23) - Necker pretended Richard Rider was her boyfriend when she saw him being hassled by HAMMER security guards. She was forced to hand in her swipecard. She drove Richard to an unused A.I.M. installation to continue working on stopping his molecular decay. Richard refused her help, knowing A.I.M. were terrorists. Nonetheless, she gave him Quasar's cosmic flask. Richard and Necker kissed each other. However, concerned it would fall into the wrong hands, Richard tried to break the flask causing Quasar to appear. Quasar gave Richard the quantum bands. |
|
(Nova IV#36 (fb) - BTS) - Necker returned to
PEGASUS after HAMMER was disbanded. (Nova IV#36 (fb) - BTS) - Necker and other PEGASUS staff were secretly possessed by parasites from the "Cancerverse" (Reality-10011) led by a dark version of Quasar. Nova contacted PEGASUS to consult with them over the danger represented by the Fault, a tear in space and time. He arrived to investigate when he learned that the facility was in lock down. (Nova IV#36) - Necker directed Nova and Quasar as
they lifted a piece of heavy machinery into place. Later, under
the control of the parasite, she ordered Guardsmen to kill Nova.
Nova survived their attack, and fled taking Necker with him in a
gravity bubble. The bubble cut off the parasites control. He was
able to free Gruenwald from his parasites control, too. Nova shut PEGASUS's Horrorscope portal and killed the creature controlling the parasites before leaving to track down the "Cancerverse's" Quasar. Necker remained behind to tend to a wounded Darkhawk and get PEGASUS back up and running. |

(Revolutionary War: Death's Head#1 (fb) - BTS) - Necker
left PEGASUS, apparently having been offered a deal by Psycho-Wraith
Prime and his mysterious master to work on the Minion project for them
in order to create an army of cyborg killers. A.I.M. funded the project,
while Psycho-Wraith Prime's master provided
Necker with a base at the Darkmoor Research Centre. She used the alien
Warguard technology mixed with A.I.M. know how to build more Warguard
style cyborgs. To further the project, she was
offered the chance to study and dissect Death's Head (Minion) for twenty
four hours, unaware that he was created by her alternate future self.
(Revolutionary
War: Death's Head#1) - The Psycho-Wraith Prime haggled with Necker as to
how long she could study Death's Head (Minion). He gave her four hours.
Necker whispered to herself that she had only needed two hours as
Psycho-Wraith Prime disappeared. She used nano-probes to reveal Death's
Head's secrets: She learned of Death's Head the Freelance Peacekeeping
Agent, and how he had been assimilated by her own (alternate) future
self had created Minion, who had assimilated Death's Head (FPA), who
became the cyborg's dominant personality. She was excited that this
seemed to indicate that her Minion project would be successful.
Her work was interrupted when Death's
Head (Minion)'s partner, Tuck, arrived with Death's Head (FPA), whom she
had hired to save "his future self." Necker used the nano-probes to
control DH-Minion and make him fight DH-FPA. Tuck threatened to blow
Neckers head off if she didn't stop controlling Death's Head (Minion),
but Necker insisted it was too late, as Minion had reverted to his core
programming and was going to assimilate DH-FPA again.
When DH-FPA stabbed DH-Minion in the head, incapacitating him, Necker decided she should be studying the earlier version (FPA) instead, and she activated her Warguard-style cyborgs, calling them Death's Head 3.0. However, Death's Head (Minion) rebooted, recovered, and regained control of himself, prompting Necker to flee. She hid in an alcove and operated a remote control unit for her cyborgs, but it was severed in two by Tuck's sword. Necker fled once more as one of the Death's Head 3.0 cyborgs launched itself at Tuck. With the remote destroyed, she needed to resolve the situation manually. See comments.
(Revolutionary War: Death's Head#1 (fb) - BTS) - Necker found the Reaver's large ambulatory tank-like vehicle armed with a really big concussion cannon.
(Revolutionary War: Death's Head#1) - Necker came crashing through a wall with the vehicle and blasted both Death's Head (Minion) and Death's Head (FPA). Activating the base's self destruct, she collected her research and had her A.I.M. associates prepare Death's Head (FPA) for transport. She reasoned that by the time the Psycho-Wraith's had finished with him his later incarnation would never have existed.
(Revolutionary War: Warheads#1 (fb) - BTS) - Necker turned over Death's Head (FPA) to Psycho-Wraith Prime (or otherwise lost possession of him).
(Revolutionary War: Omega#1 - BTS) - Death's Head (FPA)
escaped captivity.
(Death's Head IV#2 (fb)) - Working
out of the upstate New York Project: PEGASUS facility (then controlled
by A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics)), Evelyn Necker was inspired by
footage of robot space battles involving the Death's Head (FPA)
mechanoid.
(Death's Head IV#2 (fb) - BTS / Death's Head IV#2 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Necker developed Death's Head 4.0, "going big" with him before streamlining with 5.0 (see comments).
(Death's Head IV#2 (fb)) - Noting
how she loved this old robot fight footage, she commented, "All
that fancy programming, and you're still big as a house...what a
simpleton's way to make you great."She
considered
that while he looked like fun, she was not interested in "blowing on
the cartridge and getting old tech working again -- I'm ready to
invest in the upgrade."
(Death's Head IV#2 (fb)) - Necker made new prototypes and began improving on the original's clunky archaic design, including hidden voice-activated commands.
(Death's Head IV#1 (fb) - BTS / Death's
Head IV#2 (fb) - BTS) - After peering into the
Multiverse to glimpse means by which he might become an Avenger, Wiccan
observed Young Avengers teams with iterations of
Death's Head units, particular a unit with which he was not familiar
(Death's Head 5.0.1).
Locating that Death's Head unit at Project: PEGASUS, Wiccan teleported it back to the apartment he shared with his partner Hulking and hid him under their bed. Given the name Death's Head 5.0 or V in Roman numerals, Wiccan nicknamed him Vee.
(Death's Head IV#2 (fb) - BTS) - Wiccan searched for the
new Death's Head unit, connecting it with Necker at Project: PEGASUS. He
stole the inactive upgraded android Death's Head V, which he nicknamed
Vee for short, and hid him under the bed he shared with his partner
Hulkling.
(Death's Head IV#1-2 - BTS) - After encountering and
conflicting with Death's Head-FPA after he had returned to Earth,
Hulkling, Wiccan, their friend and Young Avengers teammate Hawkeye (Kate
Bishop) and the revived Vee resolved to seek out Dr. Necker for answers.
Wiccan teleported them to Project: PEGASUS, where
they found the semi-inert android remnants of past experiments.
(Death's Head IV#2) - Dr. Necker
appeared on the security screen. She greeted Vee as "little one" and was
excited to meet the "original Death's Head" (see
comments). She noted that Death's Head (FPA) probably expected
her Earth-8410 counterpart -- noting that it was a shame as that wasn't
her, as she loved her counterpart's hair -- but that, having built on
her counterpart's work, she was the upgrade.
(Death's Head IV#3) - Dr. Necker advised her "guests,"
that she was not just a face on a screen but that she was also a defense
strategy, at which point the mechnanoid form separated from the
surrounding wall.
Climbing DH-FPA's shoulders, Kate
Bishop shot an arrow into its knee, shorting it out, although Vee
appreciated that it was already in the process of rebooting.
After Vee led Hulkling and Kate further into the facility, the Necker-controlled mechanoid came back on line, and DH-FPA engaged it; after he told Wiccan to assist him, Wiccan blew up the mechanoid.
The explosion knocked Vee into another
part of the facility, at which point Necker confronted him.
(Death's Head IV#3 - BTS) - Meanwhile, Necker's Fearmonger androids separately engaged DH-FPA and Wiccan and Hulking and Bishop.
(Death's Head IV#3) - After fighting off the Fearmongers, DH-FPA & Wiccan joined back up with Hulkling and Hawkeye, but Dr. Necker activated hidden commands within Vee (calling him "Model Five") to put him under her control and sent Vee to attack them. She instructed Vee to prioritize the organics and to get Wiccan first, as he was tricky.
After Wiccan teleported himself, Bishop and Hulkling away, Necker instructed Model Five to find them. She then told DH-FPA that Wiccan didn't mean to leave him out but that he just didn't think of him as a person, and that people just couldn't help but think that way. She further insulted DH-FPA, "You're an Atari with feet."
DH-FPA told her that the humans would
escape, as they were skilled despite their youth, but Necker assured him
that they would not, as she had her best tool on the job.
Dr. Necker then activated Death's Head
4.0 -- telling DH-FPA that it was his "upgrade
before
'Vee," so, yes, it's trash now. But it was fun while it lasted. We
went big before we streamlined with the new one."
As DH 4.0 leapt through the air and smashed DH-FPA to the ground, Necker told DH-FPA, "I made <Vee> smart. Adaptive. That's the future. But you're the past. You respect smart, but smart doesn't scare you. But thanks to my Fearmongers, I know what scares you. It's you, only stronger."
(Death's Head IV#4) - Death's Head 4.0 initially battered
Death's Head-FPA, but as the damage caused DH-FPA to reboot his systems
and repair his memory, the better-functioning DH-FPA managed to knock
down DH-4.0 and then split his head open with his axe. DH-FPA then took
his power cells, which he noted had enough juice to power a warehouse of
chainsaws on wheels.
After DH-FPA departed, Necker
instructed her computer to send the most recent version of her master
Death's Head software, Version 5.0, out to all the slave drives. As over
a dozen Fearmongers began transforming into Death's Heads, she advised
them this code afforded them the most intelligence, and that they may be
uncomfortable with awareness. She also added that since the software
also made them slightly willful, which would get worse the longer they
were aware, she gave them an hour to apprehend the intruders, after
which she would launch an electromagnetic pulse that would incapacitate
them all. She further instructed her Death's Heads to deprioritize the
organics, as she had changed her mind and wanted DH-FPA. This software
upload also restored Vee back to factory settings ,and he was no longer
under Necker's control.
(Death's Head IV#4 - BTS) - After
DH-FPA and Vee rejoined Kate, Hulkling and Wiccan, Vee convinced the
group to save Necker's newest Death's Heads from the EMP. Using the
power cells claimed from DH 4.0, the others destroyed the four major
nodes in the facility's power grid, while DH-FPA took the last power
cell to Necker's central laboratory; they reasoned that frying the power
grids with enough force would cause all of the servers to restart and
that they would reboot without being connected to the master server,
which would allow the intelligent Death's Heads to appreciate the danger
and depart.
(Death's Head
IV#4) - When DH-FPA returned to her laboratory, she greeted him as "you
big violent refrigerator," while he told her that she had wasted a lot
of his time, and since time was money, he was going to stomp on her
until coins came out. She counter-offered a displacement chamber to
facilitate their escape, as A.I.M. would soon discover that her old
codes were bogus and that she was running a ton of power in one of their
old labs. She admitted that all she really wanted out of this endeavor
was him, explaining that of all the Death's Heads she had observed, he
was the one that endured. While she didn't understand it, as he looked
like something her parents would have spent money on in 1987, but
regardless, "they literally don't make
them like you anymore."
Accessing an energy staff, she tried to force DH-FPA into the chamber, but he took the staff from her and instructed her at gunpoint (including a few warning shots) to keep booting up the displacement chamber. He then departed with her via the chamber.
(Death's Head IV#4 (fb) - BTS) - Vee and the others apparently detonated the power cells, liberating the other Death's Heads.
(Death's Head IV#4 (fb) - BTS) - DH-FPA convinced Necker
to serve as his mechanic, upgrading his systems -- making him better,
faster & stronger -- and sharing in some of his profit. After he
paid off the bounty on him from Yondu, he considered them even for the
recent conflict, but they continued to work together.
Comments: Dr. Necker-8410 was created by Dan Abnett
and Liam Sharp for Marvel UK.
Dr. Necker-616 was created by Dan
Abnett, Andy Lanning, Wellington Alves & Geraldo Burges
The
evolution/convolution of Dr. Necker:
Dr. Necker
first appeared in the Marvel UK's Death's Head II#1 (1992), which took
place in the alternate reality of Earth-8410 circa 2020 A.D. (In this
reality, which lacked a sliding timescale, the heroic age ended in the
1980s). She created the Minion cyborg that soon after destroyed and
assimilated the Freelance Peacekeeping Agent Death's Head and then
adopted the identity as the new Death's Head (Minion). Necker was very
active in Marvel UK until that line's collapse in the mid-1990s.
The young
counterpart of Dr. Necker later appeared in Reality-616 in the pages of
Nova IV#17 (2008) as an employee of Project PEGASUS, and occasional
employee of A.I.M. It seemed that she was actually
the past self of Dr. Necker, and it was reasoned that she at some point
in her future would relocate to Earth-8410. The Evelyn Necker profile in
Fantastic Four: 50 Fantastic Years in 2011 indeed treated them as the
same being, as did the Appendix's Evelyn Necker profile. The
Revolutionary War further identified the Evelyn Necker who built Minion
as her future self.
Additionally, as Necker-8410 had met the Reality-616 counterparts of her
parents in a story that came out in 1993 in which they had not had kids
yet. With Reality-616's sliding timescale, that would present a major
problem, as maybe 3-4 years would have passed from Eliza Necker's
childless appearance until the appearance of the adult Necker. As a
result the Fantastic Four: 50 Fantastic Years
Evelyn Necker entry included the following: Note: Due to her parents appearing
on Earth-616 without child only a
few years before an adult Evelyn
joined Project: PEGASUS it is very likely her parents raised her in
Earth-616's past or another reality.
Even if there were not a sliding timescale,
she still would have only been less than 15 years old when she appeared
in 2008, but she was clearly an adult woman and a doctor.
When Dr.
Necker appeared again in 2019's Death's Head series, she confirmed that
the Necker who had built minion was her alternate reality counterpart
(Earth-8410), implying that she herself was Necker-616.
So, that's why I eventually got around to splitting
up the two versions, although there is still no other explanation for
how she was an adult 3-4 years after not having been born yet. Having
her parents raise her in the past or in some other timeline still makes
the best sense.
It's also worth pointing out that the Darkmoor Research Centre base she uses in Revolutionary War is indeed the same Centre where Brian Braddock once worked as seen in Captain Britain#1. Captain Britain also appears in the issue, although he and Necker don't interact. She does, however, appear to be using the Reaver's ambulatory vehicle. As the Research Centre appears to have become a Mys-Tech base, my guess is they acquired it (and the vehicle) at some point after the Reaver's attack. Alternatively, perhaps Mys-Tech were already involved with the centre or the Reaver prior to the events of Captain Britain#1. The vehicle could well be the same one the Reaver used, or be based on the same designs. I'm not listing Mys-Tech as affiliations, however, as later issues of Revolutionary War show that it was Mephisto and Killpower who were behind the Psycho-Wraith Prime's actions. Also, as far as we know she never dealt directly with anybody other that Psycho-Wraith Prime and never learned the identity of his "mysterious master."
All of the numbering of the
Death's Head mechanoids is based on the thought the the Death's Head
freelance peacekeeping agent is "1," and they ignore Paxton
Page, who preceded them all as Death's Head.
Rather than have a bunch of Death's
Head units running about that may never reappear in future stories, I
prefer to think that they were instead each transported to an alternate
reality, where they each became the cohesive 'glue' that bonded a Young
Avengers team, however briefly, to provide self-fulfilling visions in
the Multiverse for Wiccan to follow.
