History:chichano-chichero-8116-bridge

(Dreadstar#3 (fb) - BTS) - Chichano's streets were typically packed at lunch hour breaks, with the crowd peppered with a number of off-world tourists and businessmen.

(Dreadstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - The Instrumentality's Admiral Quinaz's daughter lived in Chichano.

(Dreadstar#3 (fb) - BTS) - Seeking to steal the Instrumentality Teleportation Drive/Tele-Drive to again level the field of battle between the two super-powers, Vanth Dreadstar and Syzygy Darklock traveled to Chichano -- secretly landed in their spaceship the Lightcutter II in a wooded area outside the city of Chichano before entering the city -- to cause a distraction while Willow, Skeevo Phlatus and Oedi accessed an Instrumentality ship and stole the drive.

(Dreadstar#3) - Vanth and Syzygy hung out in Chichano during a typical lunch hour break, right next to a wanted poster of them, and a patrolman soon noticed and reported their presence; with an earpiece picking up Instrumentality transmissions, Vanth shared that they had been discovered and reported with Syzygy.

(Dreadstar#3 - BTS) - Receiving this report, the Instrumentality's High Lord Papal dispatched destroyers Bravo, Alpha and Hero the planet immediately and then ordered the local authority's to send out an attack unit and stand by for further instructions. Although curious why his enemies would be on Chichano, and Admiral Quinaz suggested that maybe they needed supplies; the Papal ultimately considered that the reason did not matter as he finally had them at his mercy.

(Dreadstar#3) - As the radio waves were filled with talk about Dreadstar and Darklock and the crowd filled with patrolmen, Dreadstar summoned his
Sword of Icy Fire, which led the patrolmen, backed by Deacons of Deltor, to start firing on them. Dreadstar's sword and Darklock's mystic shields blocked the weapons' fire.

As they finished off the first wave of attackers, a group of flyers assaulted them next, strafing the crowd.

Appreciating that their attackers cared little who they hit, Dreadstar noted that he didn't figure that they would come on so strong, and he and Darklock worked to get away from innocent bystanders.

After Dreadstar leapt off a bridge onto a flyer, dispatched its pilots (who were saved by parachutes) and flew it away, Darklock flew behind him under his power; the two used the buildings for cover to avoid being hit.

After Willow reported their successful theft of the teledrive, Dreadstar and Darklock prepared to depart, but one of the other flyers nailed Dreadstar's flyer, forcing him to abandon it and then hold onto Darklock's foot while Darklock flew him and fired mystic bolts to destroy ships that pursued them. Darklock executed low-altitude high-speed maneuvers that the instrumentality crafts could not match, while the destroyers could not achieve a low enough altitude to spot the rebels.

(Dreadstar I#3 - BTS) - Receiving these reports, the Papal was furious at having been duped, and he refused to allow them to escape him this time. Seizing a communication device, the Papal directly ordered the three destroyers to climb to "altitude level 9" and then fire their nuclear torpedoes at the city of Chichano. He instructed them that these orders were to carried out without question or hesitation.

Twelve nuclear torpedoes were launched from three different directions.

(Dreadstar I#3) - Picking up the Papal's order, Dreadstar informed Darklock. While Dreadstar tried to think of a way to stop them and save the city, Darklock appreciated that there was nothing they could do except save themselves.

Darklock grabbed Dreadstar and flew into the sewers' deepest sub-level 7.

There Syzygy cast a mystic spell to protect them from the impact while Vanth's sword would absorb the radiation.

(Dreadstar I#3 - BTS) - After Quinaz reported that the city of Chichano was no more, the Papal instructed all ships to return to the regular patrol sectors and determine which destroyer had lost its tele-drive. He also instructed a statement be issued to the media, notably the rebels' latest cowardly act of sabotage, the detonation of a nuclear device in the heavily-populated city of Chicano. The next day, they were to report that the holy church had apprehended and executed the perpetrators of the foul crime. He smiled widely as he returned to his chambers.

(
Dreadstar I#3) - Having survived the assault, Dreadstar carried Darklock, who had exhausted his power in the effort; with the shaft blocked with melted rubble, Dreadstar blasted a way out with his sword.

On the surface, Dreadstar found the site had been blasted into a smooth crater.

Walking outside of the crater, Dreadstar found the air was filled with the smells of charred metal and flesh.

After a mile, Dreadstar found images of vaporized individuals burn into the walls.

Two miles later, Dreadstar found the first body, a skeleton with limited flesh.

He was subsequently horrified to find such bodies of children.

After another mile or so, Dreadstar found the wounded, but he knew that the radiation would eventually finish them, and so he continued on his way.

Exiting the city as night fell, Dreadstar returned with Darklock to the hidden spaceship (Lightcutter II or III?), departing Chichero without detection, and they rejoined the rest of the group aboard the Big Bundle ship.

(Dreadstar I#3 - BTS) - Although he appreciated that the tele-drive was essential in their plot to stop the Monarchy-Instrumentality War, which would save billions, Dreadstar was devastated by the senseless destruction.

Unable to forgive himself for surviving when so many others died, he cured the Papal and his mad war.

(Dreadstar I#4 - BTS) - Admiral Quinaz attempted to slay the Lord Papal for his destruction of Chichano and the death of his daughter, but the Papal survived the assault and slew Quinaz insteadchichano-chichero-8116-letter.

Comments: Created by Jim Starlin.

    Dreadstar/Reality-8116 primer

This was quite the powerful story, showing the Lord High Papal's fanatacism and outright evil nature (and his survival of Quinaz's attempt to kill him helped illustrate his power). It was also very contraversial, with a lot of letters discussing the events. The letter column in Dreadstar#8 had an insightful letter about responsibility and consequences of the bombing of Chichano.------------------------>

I am working my way through the Dreadstar series with the goal of completing it in time for Dreadstar's 50th Anniversary in the Fall of 1980. I don't recall Chichano or Chicero appearing again after this issue, but if/when I find other appearances, I will add them.

Chichano is referred to as the "capitol" of Chichero. My understanding is that "capitol" refers to the specific legislative building while "capital" refers to the city where a government is situated. However, that's also an Earth definition from about a million years ago and a whole galaxy away from the Empirical Galaxy, so who knows what it means there...

This profile was published 10/9/2027 to celebrate Jim Starlin on his 77th birthday!

CLARIFICATIONS:
Chichano has no known connections to:

  • CHICAGO - Illinois' Windy City...that toddlin' town--established in 1837 A.D.
  • other "Chichano" cities, characters, groups, items, events, races or places...

CHICHERO

chichano-chichero-8116-planetchichano-chichero-8116-woods    Chichero was one of the Instrumentality's upper class planets.

Only moderately rich in mineral wealth, its excellent educational system had created a populace rich with technicians and clerics.

Its chief export was mid-range technology.

Its capitol (see comments) was Chichano, which was destroyed via nuclear torpedoes on the command of the High Lord Papal in an effort to kill Vanth Dreadstar and Syzygy Darklock.

Dreadstar and Darklock had secretly landed in their spaceship the Lightcutter II in a wooded area outside the city of Chichano before entering the city. After surviving Chichano's destruction, Dreadstar and Darklock departed in the Lightcutter II and returned to their "Big Bundle" ship.
