Powers/Abilities: Nina's unique werewolf/vampire physiology grants her powers and abilities not possessed by conventional werewolves and vampires. Nina is not undead like other vampires and, mostly human by day, can withstand the sun's direct rays. Once the sun sets, she becomes a vampire and can transform into a large white wolf or an anthropoid werewolf at will. As a vampire, she possesses enhanced healing, senses (tracking by scent or hearing the slightest noise), strength (lifting 1000 lbs.) and agility, and can scale sheer surfaces. As both a wolf and vampire, she possesses sharp fangs and claws. Formerly transforming into an anthropoid werewolf under a full moon, since becoming a vampire, she instead assumes her wolf form, becoming bloodthirsty and out of control. Though she can be photographed while human during the day, at night, like other vampires, her image cannot be captured on film. Nina is highly educated and fluent in several languages, including English, French and Italian, and trained in fighting by SHIELD.

Height: 5'5"
Weight: 119 lbs.
Eyes: (Human) Blue; (vampire) red
Hair: Blonde

History:

(Amazing Fantasy II#10/2 (fb) - BTS) - Nina was the daughter of Imperial Studios owner Mr. Price and Lissa Russell, member of the European aristocratic Russoff family.

Her mother disappeared when she was twelve and her father put her in boarding schools for the rest of her childhood.

(Amazing Fantasy II#10/2 (fb) ) - Half of Hollywood was present at her birthday party when she turned 18. She ran off crying and screaming during the party.

The next morning Nina woke up without clothes on a farm outside of town with animal blood all over her.

From this day on the had blackouts each month. To have something to wear after her blackouts she always kept a red suit, she usually wore as a scarf around her neck.

Nina visited doctors and therapists without results. Her mother Lissa Russell, who Nina had not seen since she was twelve, eventually sent a letter to Nina explaining the Russoff family's werewolf curse.

Nina went to the Carpathian Mountains to find a way to buy her way out of the curse, but locals wanted nothing to do with Russoffs. In a Transylvanian village Nina fell prey to a vampire, who tried to turn her into one of his own. Nina awakened three weeks later as a vampire. A few nights later the vampire was woken up during a full moon by Nina, who had turned into a white wolf.

(Amazing Fantasy II#10/2 (fb) - BTS) - Nina, the wolf, attacked vampire, but the vampire escaped. This was the first time Nina could remember what she was doing when she had turned into a wolf. Everything had changed from this day on. During nights she was a vampire with all the powers and urges. The longer she avoided drinking blood the more control she lost. She usually lured criminals and other lowlifes to her to make them her victims. Because she lived in a different city each week there was never a pattern to follow for local authorities.

Nina traveled all over Europe followed by paparazzi Louis.

(Amazing Fantasy II#10/2) - Nina arrived in Naples, Italy on a yacht with a friend at her side and was welcomed by several paparazzi, including Louis.

Louis followed her and saw Nina took a cab to a lousy place. After she took a nap she strolled through the more unsafe places in Naples at night. Louis followed her the whole time and watched as she was dragged into an alley by two criminals. To Louis' shock Nina broke the neck of one of the criminals and drank the other criminal's blood. Nina heard Louis take a photo and despite him running away quickly caught him. She told him her backstory before dragging him up an old building and leaving him there. Nina didn't even show up in Louis' photographs from the last night because she was a vampire.

(Amazing Fantasy II#11/2) - Nina found another victim at a club.

The next morning Nina was asked to get a personal assistant if she wanted to keep "working" for her father's studio as location scout. The personal assistant was supposed to manage her travel and keep track of her expenses. Though Nina wasn't excited about having a personal assistant she understood that her father could otherwise not write off her trips and other expenses like her contributions to the Los Angeles Zoo.

She wasn't impressed with the first three applicants, but the fourth, Inger Rinefeld, caught her attention. After the job interview Nina told Inger that she would contact her the next day to tell her if she had the job.

That night Inger followed Nina into the zoo where Nina locked herself up in the apehouse quarantine during the full moon. At 9:40 Inger followed two custodians into the apehouse. The curios custodians opened the quarantine section to take a quick look and Nina, turned into her wolf form, broke out. Inger used a tranquilizer gun to shoot Nina, who was chasing one of the custodians. Nina turned human or rather vampire and Inger shot her again. Back in wolf form Nina chased Inger back to the apehouse where one of the custodians helped catch the wolf with a sling and push it back into quarantine. They closed the door until the next morning. Back in human form Nina gave Inger the job and was going to explain everything to her new personal assistant.

(Amazing Fantasy II#12/2) - During her first month as Nina Price's personal assistant Inger saw her interact with the rich during the day and murder scum during the night. Inger had started tracking down violent felons and murderers for Nina to feed on during the nights. Inger had noticed a stalker following Nina during the day (it was Nina's uncle Jack).

Accompanied by Inger Nina went on a hunt near Toronta, Canada. It was 4:26 AM when Nina smelled a strange wolf. When she attacked her target for the night it became clear pretty quickly that she had walked into a trap set up by SHIELD. She was hit with garlic gas by another agent and her supposed target put special handcuffs on her. Nina's uncle Werewolf (Jack Russell), who had been following her, came to Nina's aid and attacked the SHIELD agents. One of them staked Nina, but it didn't affect her at all, because she was not a regular vampire. Jack stopped Nina from murdering the agents and held his niece in his arms during sunrise. SHIELD's Timothy Dugan planned to talk to Nina himself to make her an offer. Meanwhile Nina introduced her uncle Jack to Inger. Jack offered to tell Nina a few things about her mother.

(BTS) - Nina was blackmailed into joining the Commandos after she defeated S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agents. (see comments)

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#1 (fb) - BTS) - SHIELD caught up with Nina and Jack and offered them membership in their new monster division the Howling Commandos. Both took the offer though Jack stayed inactive while Nina became part of the Howling Commandos' main operatives.

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#1) - As part of SHIELD's main Howling Commandos squad Vampire by Night aided in an attack in Afghanistan on a hidden cave base of the Lords of the Living Lightning alongside Warwolf, Clone of Frankenstein, Gorilla Man and Zombie. LoLL's security system was programmed to ignore wildlife readings, giving Nina access to the base in wolf form. She bit through the main power grid's cables then transformed into her vampire form and went through several LoLL members along with the other SHIELD Howling Commandos. SHIELD picked up Nina and her team using the dragon Grogg as their transport.

When Clay Quartermain was given command over the Howling Commandos he looked through the files of the active main operatives including Vampire by Night, who he considered just a spoiled rich kid. Beemer corrected Quartermain by telling him that Price was very effective.

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#2) - Vampire by Night and Living Mummy where having a drink at Area 13. Nina had blood and listened to Living Mummy telling her that the wizard Merlin had been stolen from SHIELD's Warehouse. Zombie corrected Living Mummy, telling Nina and him that Merlin had escaped on his own. Living Mummy, who didn't like Zombie at all didn't want him around or drinking with him and Nina.

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#3) - After learning that Merlin had taken control over an English village Clay Quartermain planned to send in Vampire by Night and Lilith, daughter of Dracula, for ground recon. Quartermain gave Nina a disc with the mission briefing and got into her face because he didn't consider her human.

Vampire by Night and Lilith in dresses were teleported to Stonehenge. Not used to teleportation Nina vomited. Lilith felt disrespected by Nina and made sure Nina knew that Lilith was royalty among vampires. Surrounded by fairies Nina considered their mission compromised, but Lilith assured her that this was all part of the plan and that they were chosen to infiltrate the area because like the trolls, fairies and elves released by Merlin on to the world they were beings of legend. They soon found and entered Merlin's village and drew much attention to them by merely being undead. A centaur tossed Nina aside on to some trolls. When a fight broke out between Nina and the trolls others started betting on her. Nina won the fight and the affections of many of the creatures of legend inside the village, who celebrated her. When Quartermain received a satellite image of the incident he was shocked to see draw that much attention to her.

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#4 (fb) - BTS) - Merlin learned everything he needed to know from Nina and Lilith through the Fairy Folks enchantment of shared awareness.

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#4) - Nina and Lilith followed Merlin and his army while Merlin made an alliance with Hellstorm and the Lords of the Living Lightning. Despite her heightened senses Nina was unable to hear what they were talking about unlike Lilith, who offered to make her more vampire if Nina wanted to. Nina declined.

Lilith betrayed Nina to Merlin. Nina was caught and bound to the ground. Merlin, not aware sunlight was not deadly to Nina, promised the sun would kill her mercifully swift.

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#5) - Still bound to the ground Nina was approached by a fairy, who told her that the Fairy Folk only told Merlin what he asked for and not everything else like the fact that sunlight could not kill Nina. The fairy helped Nina to free herself, then offered the help of the Fairy Folk against Merlin if his people in return were allowed to stay on Earth when the others were returned. Nina agreed to the fairy's terms, but also told him that she actually had not the authority to do so. They then ran into Nina's Howling Commandos allies Groot, Glob, Gorilla Man, Living Mummy, Clone of Frankenstein, Warwolf and Zombie, who had followed some of Merlin's army, who had attacked Area 13, through a portal back to England.

(Nick Fury's Howling Commandos#6) - Carried by Groot Nina and her Howling Commandos allies made their way to Merlin's village. The fairy, who had freed Nina, flew off to spread the word among his people to aid SHIELD against Merlin, so they could stay on Earth. Nina was critized by her teammates for making a deal with the Fairy Folk. Overlooking Merlin's village Nina soon witnessed SHIELD and an army of Howling Commandos falling in to wage war against Merlin and his army. She then saw Mole Man's machines pull the village into the ground, forcing Merlin and his army attack SHIELD outside their secure village. Nina, Warwolf and Gorilla Man broke through to find Merlin personally. Considering this battle lost Merlin teleported away when Warwolf and Gorilla Man confronted him. With Merlin's enchantments gone his army vanished, returning back to their home dimension, except for the Fairy Folk. Nina was surrounded by the thankful fairies while telling Warwolf, Gorilla Man and Lilith of the outcome of the battle.

(All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Premiere HC#5 - Howling Commandos (SHIELD) profile) - The Howling Commandos were presumably dismantled after SHIELD's dissolution following the secret Skrull invasion.

(Marvel Tarot#1 - BTS) - The First Tarot showed Ian McNee the vampiric werewolf Nina Price as the Death card.

SECRET WARS III HAPPENED

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#1 (fb) - BTS) - Nina Price was captured again by S.H.I.E.L.D., who forced her back into service as a member of the Howling Commandos. Between missions she was and the other monsters were incarcerated beneath Area 13.

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#1 (fb) - BTS) - When S.H.I.E.L.D. lost contact to the S.S. Chaney, which had been smuggling the Earth Idol of Golthana, she called their sub-division S.T.A.K.E.'s leader Krayne to put together a team to retrieve the idol. Price was cleared for immediate employment by Maria Hill for the mission under the leadership of Dum Dum Dugan.

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#1) - Price joined the Howling Commandos on their mission to retrieve the Earth Idol from the S.S.Chaney. While fighting the crew, which had been mutated into plant zombies by the idol, Price realized she couldn't control them because there was no brain activity anymore in the mutated crewmen. Nina turned into wolf form to clear the way to the idol, which Teen Abomination managed to get a hold on. While waiting for extraction the mutated crewmen combined into a gigantic hive minded plant creature. While Man-Thing took care of the giant Price helped to get the individual plant zombies off Teen Abomination, but when Man-Thing burnt the plant zombies the idol, which was linked to thim was burnt to dust as well.

Following the failed mission Price, Man-Thing, Manphibian and the other monsters were picked up a transporter and put in their cells.

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#2) - Price, Dugan and Manphibian went on a mission in the tunnels beneath New York City to find a missing subway and after losing radio contact to Area 13 found their target Glyph, who summoned the spirits of the ancient ones to attack them. Blinded by the spirits' light Price and her teammates were startled for a moment and nearly run over by a subway. Price sensed the angry spirits summoned by Glyph. She, Dugan and Manphibian found the missing train with hiroglyphs written all over it. Price told the others that the girl could not be held responsible for the actions of the spirits and sensed that something was inside the train. They were attacked by the spirits, but the weapons provided to them by S.T.A.K.E. proved effective against the spirits. While Dugan and Manphibian freed the surviving passengers fromt he subway Price used her psychic abilities to go into Glyph's subconscious and help her to regain control over her powers. Price succeeded and with the mission complete Dugan called S.T.A.K.E. for extraction.

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#3) - Price saved Kraye from the spirits summoned by Glyph, who lost control over her powers again while imprisoned at Area 13 due to her brother Navid influencing her from afar. Kraye didn't thank Price, but was only shocked that she had somehow escaped her cell. Price fought the spirits and then helped Glyph regain control over her powers again after Teen Abomination had restrained Glyph for Price. Glyph warned Price that the rest of the team was running right into a trap. Price told Kraye to pull out the field team fromtheir mission, but he wasn't going to follow orders from a prisoner.

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#4) - Dugan assembled a team to stop Glyph's brother Navid and the Sphinx, which included Price.

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#5) - Price and Hit-Monkey infiltrated New York City's Grandview Museum to prevent Sphinx from attaining the Mask of Amenhotep from the museum. On the way they freed hostages held from Sphinx's undead. They lost their element of surprise when they encountered Sphinx and his undead looters. Sphinx ordered the undead to continue their search for the mask while he would take care of Price and Hit-Monkey. Sphinx fought Price one on one, but she managed to take him down by surprise when she turned into her wolf form. Meanwhile Hit-Monkey found the mask and used it to negate Sphinx's powers and turning Price back to human form in an instant. Realizing the mask could negate all supernatural powers Price took Hit-Monkey, who wore the mask, to the outside to use it against Glyph's brother Navid. Price watched as Navid was taken over by the Adversary and Hit-Monkey used the mask to get rid of the supernatural threat. Though Sphinx had slipped away Price was sure he would remember them and considered it a win that they had kept the mask out of Sphinx's hands. She explained the mask's powers to Dugan and then told Glyph that she was only feeling peaceful spirits in the area now. Mission accomplished!

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#6 (fb) - BTS) - When Orrgo, the team's communications expert, went missing Dugan assembled the Howling Commandos to search for him. He assumed it could have something to do with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secret prison Pleasant Hill.

(Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D.#6) - Arriving in Pleasant Hill during a riot by the former prisoners Price fought alongside the Howling Commandos. She helped take down Jack O'Lantern, Gargantua, Mister Hyde, Biohazard and Melter.

The team eventually found Orrgo in combat with Kobik, the damaged Cosmic Cube in control of reality inside Pleasant Hill. Kobik turned Dugan against his team, but Teen Abomination caught him. When Price asked for a distraction so she could use her telepathic abilities to help Dugan's consciousness regain control over his body Orrgo offered to stop Kobik. Price succeeded and then used her powers to restrain her. Orrgo, Price and Glyph defeated Kobik, who had enough of the Howling Commandos and sent them all back to Area 13.

Back at Area 13 the Howlers learned that Kraye had released all of S.T.A.K.E.'s prisoners. Dugan assembled the Howling Commandos, including Price, to recapture the monsters again.

(New Avengers IV#12 - BTS) - Dugan thought about his team, including Price, when he informed John Garrett that the Howling Commandos were doing well even without him. He still hoped he could get back to them soon.

(Old Man Logan II#14 (fb) - BTS) - Nina Price followed Dracula's command to join his vampire army in Transylvania.

(Old Man Logan II#14) - Three days later the other Howling Commandos (Glyph, Hit-Monkey, Manphibian, Man-Thing, Teen Abomination, Warwolf) attacked Castle Dracula to save their teammate, but Vampire by Night ordered the other vampires to kill her former teammates.

(Old Man Logan II#15) - Vampire by Night aided the other vampires at Castle Dracula in the defeat of the Howling Commandos for their true master Dracula. When Warwolf called S.T.A.K.E. Command for backup Vampire by Night knocked him out, telling him there would be no backup come to aid them. Price then helped take the defeated Howling Commandos to Dracula, who had just defeated Old Man Logan with the aid of Jubilee.

When Jubilee turned on Dracula after resisting his command to kill Logan she was kicked by Price, who was shocked when, despite her earlier claims, backup for the Howling Commandos arrived. Orrgo broke through the roof and attacked Price, who aided Dracula's forces against the Howling Commandos and Logan until Logan decapitated Dracula, breaking his control over the vampires. Price came to her senses while pummeling Warwolf and felt very sorry for her actions.

(Secret Warriors II#2 (fb) - BTS) - Captain America, the leader of Hydra, sent Price and the Howling Commandos out to capture Quake and her team of Secret Warriors. Dugan set up a trap for them at a farm somewhere in the United States.

(Secret Warriors II#2) - The Secret Warriors watched from nearby how Nina Price was pulled from a farmhouse by Hydra agents. Inferno and Moon Girl decided to come to her aid, but after taking down the Hydra agents were attacked by Price, who was hit by Quake with a seismic blast. Quake recognized her and knew Price had not come alone. The Howling Commandos (Dugan, Hit-Monkey, Manphibian, Man-Thing, Orrgo, Teen Abomination and Vampire by Night) attacked and revealed how this was a trap for the Secret Warriors all along, but the Secret Warriors escaped them.

Comments: Created by Jeff Parker (writer) & Federica Manfredi (artist).

The biggest mystery of Nina Price is how her mother, who is herself in her mid-20s, could have a daughter over 18 years old. Even the handbooks had no clear answer for that and assumed that maybe the Darkhold was somehow involved in Nina's creation or Nina was adopted and despite not being a true Russoff became a werewolf.

Nina's fate since Nick Fury's Howling Commandos is unrevealed. She should still be alive since the Marel Tarot did show her. I assume she returned to her old socialite life and killing bad guys behind the scenes during the night.

Following the recreation of the Multiverse Nina once again became part of a version of the monster Howling Commandos.

From Zen Harada/Anthony Flamini on 24th May 2006:
I had a long phone conversation with Giffen when I was writing the Howling Commandos and Vampire by Night profiles for the Horror Handbook last year. He informed me that Nina was blackmailed into joining the Commandos after she defeated S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agents. S.H.I.E.L.D. threatened to expose her vampire/werewolf nature to the world if she didn't join, which would have ruined her father.

She received a handbook profile in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Horror 2005 (December, 2012), which was updated for All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Premiere HC#12 and Vampires: The Marvel Undead.
