History

(Amazing Spider-Man II#535 (fb)) - During the days of Joe McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committe, Ted Richards, a funny, eccentric and accepting writer, would take his nephew Reed up the street twice a week for ice cream, where they would talk about the world. Not a scientist like most of his family, Ted developed a quirky outlook on life, often taking to strangers, wearing the wrong colored socks, and eating at small restaurants. Eventually, the House Un-American Activities Committee subpoenaed Ted during their search for Communist agents amongst the arts. A stubborn and strong-willed man, Ted told the Committee to "go to Hell" when they had him testify about whether or not he was a Communist and ordered him to give names of people who might be Communists.

(Amazing Spider-Man II#535 (fb) - BTS) - Holding Ted for contempt of Congress for six months, the Committee blacklisted Ted, ruining Ted's writing career and even alienating Ted from his own family. Ultimately, Ted lost his life savings, his home and eventually, his life.

Comments: Created by J. Michael Straczynski, Ron Garney and Bill Reinhold.

I chose not list Reed Richards' in-laws as Ted's relatives, as Ted had died long before Reed had married Sue Storm. I also chose not to list Cassandra (Warlord) of Other-Earth for a similar reason. Ted had died long before Nathaniel went to Other-Earth and met Cassandra, so the focus is on blood relations.
