History: (Spider-Verse I#2/5 (fb) -BTS) - Earth-939's Spider-Man was bitten by a radioactive spider, went to Midtown High School and ESU. He also worked for the Daily Bugle, fought in the original Secret Wars conflict, lost the Venom symbiote and gained his cloth black suit.

(What If? II#53/1) - While battling a time-traveling Iron Man from Earth-8410, whom he thought had injured a child, Spider-Man savagely attacked Iron Man 2020, damaging critical systems in his armor that would have allowed Iron Man to return his home future reality (see comments).

(Spider-Woman V#3) - Spider-Man was observed in the Web of Life and Destiny by Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew of Earth-616) while she was undercover on Earth-001. After she was confronted by Earth-001's Master Weaver, Spider-Man was still seen in the Web of Life and Destiny as Master Weaver monologued to Spider-Woman about his enslavement by Earth-001's vampiric Inheritors.

(Spider-Verse I#2/5 (fb) -BTS) - Spider-Man was recruited into the multiversal Spider-Army (presumably from his own reality) to help defeat the Inheritors.

(Spider-Verse I#2/5) - Spider-Man joined numerous other alternate reality Spider-totems on Earth-001's Loomworld in a battle against the Inheritors, during which he had to reload his web cartridges and met his Earth-18119 counterpart. While reloading their cartridges, the pair discussed how they all believed they were THE Peter Parker and Spider-Man-18119 commented on meeting Yu Komori, a Japanese Spider-Man. Questioning why there were four or five Japanese Spider-Men, this Spider-Man worried he was the "racist Spider-Man." They swapped stories back and forth about the strange alternate Spider-Men they had seen including one singing show tunes, one trying to teach English, one who looked like "guy from Seabiscuit" and one who looked like the "guy from The Social Network." Before returning to the battle, the pair tried to figure out what made they different, listing all the similarities, with this Spider-Man not realizing that his Earth-18119 counterpart was married while he was not.

(Amazing Spider-Man III#15 - BTS) - After the defeat of Inheritors, Spider-Man returned to his home reality.

(Spider-Geddon I#5) - When the Inheritors returned, Spider-Man was recruited back into the Spider-Army by Peter Parker of Earth-616 and traveled to Earth-616 to stop the Inheritors inside the Transamerica Pyramid.

While there is no direct statement or in-story reference confirming that the black-costumed Spider-Man seen in Spider-Verse I#2 and during Spider-Verse/Spider-Geddon as the Earth-939 Spider-Man, there is some evidence that may support them being one and the same. For example, at the time of the Spider-Verse event, most of the black-costumed alternate reality Spider-Men had symbiote costumes. We see in Spider-Verse I#2 that this black-costumed Spider-Man was wearing a cloth version of his black costume, not a symbiote, ruling out numerous alternate black costumed Spideys, and, looking at the alternate, black-costumed Spider-Men that were around in 2014-2015, Earth-939's Spider-Man seems most likely to be the one in Spider-Verse, given that he wore a black cloth costume and not a symbiote. Plus, the Earth-939 Spider-Man was still alive and/or not otherwise incapacitated at the time of Spider-Verse (as far as we know...he had only been seen in a single panel prior to Spider-Verse). Additionally, given the background info the black costumed Spider-Man discussed with Earth-18119's Spider-Man in Spider-Verse I#2, those events would match up with Earth-939's Spider-Man as well since his reality had a shared history with Earth-616 up until it diverged into Earth-939. Those events he mentioned in Spider-Verse I#2 line up with past events that also occurred on Earth-616 and would have been events that also occured on Earth-939 prior to its divergence from -616. I suppose one could argue that we don't know how future events unfolded on Earth-939 following the What If? II#53 issue and it's possible that reality's Spider-Man ultimately went back to his classic red and blue costume, much like his Earth-616 counterpart did, but we don't know and without any evidence to the contrary, I still stand by my argument that Earth-939 seems the most likely choice. As such, this profile treats things as if that is the case. If something comes along to confirm otherwise, this profile will be split into two profiles, one of the new black costumed Spider-Man and one of Earth-939's Spider-Man.

To clarify the First Appearance section, Earth-939's Spider-Man's first appearance is What If? II#53 (September, 1993). If the one in Spider-Verse IS a different character then the first appearance would be Spider-Woman V#3 (March, 2015). Additionally, IF he's proven to be a different character, his creators would then be Dennis Hopeless, Greg Land and Jay Leisten.

Other alternate black cloth-costumed Spider-Men that existed prior to Spider-Verse were Earth-7121 (likely dead but not confirmed), Earth-9009 (definitely dead), Earth-9230 (likely incarcerated but another possible option, I suppose) and Earth-90213 (likely in jail and not as happy-go-lucky as the one in Spider-Verse).
