History:
(Defenders: Strange Heroes - Doctor Spectrum entry - BTS) - William
"Billy" Roberts was born an American citizen in Charlotte, North
Carolina. He later earned a seminary degree at Oklahoma Baptist
University.
(Avengers I Annual#8 (fb) -
BTS) - Roberts became an evangelical revival preacher who spoke to
large crowds across the country.
(Avengers I Annual#8 (fb)) - Billy Roberts was
hosting a revival show in Detroit, Michigan when the god-fearing
sanitation worker Bob Farmer brought the Power Prism artifact to him by
chance as a church offering. Thinking the Power Prism to be a valuable
gemstone worth thousands, Roberts planned to have it appraised and its
value used for his services but he soon learned of the Prism's power.
More than a little power-mad, he believed that the Prism was a sign
from God that he was fit to conquer and the Power Prism had been given
to him as a reward for his years of faithful religious dedication.
Billy Roberts' strong will quickly subjugated the will of Krimonn the
Power Prism to such a degree that Krimonn could not even voice his
displeasure to Roberts via the Prism itself.
(Defenders I#13 (fb) - BTS) - Billy Roberts was recruited by the alien
Nebulon, who further suppressed the Power Prism's sentience. Billy then
replaced Kinji Obatu as Dr. Spectrum in the newly-reorganizing Squadron
Sinister. In an effort to recruit their former teammate Nighthawk back
in the fold, the Squadron Sinister sent Nighthawk a letter to meet at
the Crayton Observatory or risk his identity being revealed to the
public.
(Defenders I#13 (fb)) - When Nighthawk arrived at the Observatory, Dr. Spectrum, Whizzer and Hyperion were waiting for him and a confused Nighthawk asked how Dr. Spectrum could be there with a restored Power Prism when he had read it had been destroyed weeks earlier. Dr. Spectrum proclaimed that Nighthawk should not believe everything he read and the smart-alecky Whizzer agreed. Hyperion then related how the alien Nebulon had helped the Squadron Sinister reunite and when Nebulon appeared and Nighthawk questioned who he was, Dr. Spectrum exclaimed that it was Nebulon that had restored the Power Prism and suppressed its sentience. Hyperion continued, noting that he had sold Nebulon the planet Earth in exchange for his helping the various Squadron Sinister, at which point Nighthawk attempted to leave, thinking they were all crazy. Nebulon halted Nighthawk where he stood and Dr. Spectrum remarked that Nighthawk would not be able to move until he agreed to rejoin the Squadron Sinister.
(Defenders I#13) - Unable to go along with the Squadron Sinister's plans to create a weapon capable of melting the ice caps and flooding the planet, Nighthawk warned the heroic Defenders of the Squadron Sinister's plans, noting that the Squadron didn't seem to care about making the planet uninhabitable and that Dr. Spectrum in particular would probably prefer killing the planet if he could not rule it. The Squadron Sinister soon teleported the betraying Nighthawk away and began work on their weapon, with Dr. Spectrum using his Power Prism to break apart glaciers during the construction. Having been convinced of the threat of the Squadron Sinister by Nighthawk's warning, the Defenders eventually made their way to the north pole ice cap and engaged Squadron Sinister. During the ensuing clash with the Defenders, Dr. Spectrum battled Dr. Strange, who dodged a giant fist created from the Power Prism's energies. Spectrum followed up with an energy mace but Dr. Strange used the Shield of the Seraphim spell to destroy the energy construct. Strange then retaliated by using the Vapors of Valtorr spell to mystically command Dr. Spectrum to sleep. The other Defenders soon gained the upper hand on their opponents as well until the battle was halted by the arrival of Nebulon himself.

(Defenders I#14) - As the downed Dr. Spectrum, Hyperion
and Whizzer lay on the ground, Nebulon announced his plans to destroy
the Defenders. A recovering Hyperion stopped Nebulon, noting that the
timing wasn't right and the Defenders wouldn't understand why they had
wasted their lives, to which Dr. Spectrum asked what difference that
was to the Squadron Sinister. Hyperion then related how he had sold the
Earth to Nebulon due to his belief that the Earth had destroyed his own
Microverse homeworld and Dr. Spectrum watched as Hyperion opted to
punish the Defenders by setting them adrift in space. Nebulon did as
Hyperion requested and Hyperion ordered Dr. Spectrum to continue
working on their weapon to melt the ice caps as the Defenders (and
Nighthawk as well) were launched into space by Nebulon. The Defenders
eventually freed themselves and returned to confront Nebulon and the
Squadron Sinister anew. In the ensuing battle, the Defenders gained the
upper hand against Nebulon and Dr. Spectrum suggested the Squadron aid
the failing Nebulon but when Nebulon uncontrollably reverted to his
true, monstrous form, Nighthawk turned the Squadron Sinister's weapon
against Nebulon. Unsure of what to do, Dr. Spectrum and the Squadron
hesitated for a second before deciding to run away, only to disappear
alongside Nebulon when the alien imploded.
(Defenders I Giant-Size#4 (fb) - BTS) - Nebulon had
actually teleported himself and the Squadron Sinister to another planet
and when he decided to live among the Ludberdites
there, he transported Dr. Spectrum and the other Squadron Sinister
members back to Earth with a weapon which they could use to gain
revenge on the Defenders and Nighthawk.
(Defenders I Giant-Size#4) - Less than an hour later, Dr. Spectrum
and the others met at the Crayton Observatory and worked on a plan of
vengeance against the Defenders. As they discussed the element of
surprise, the Hulk busted through the wall of the observatory, accusing
them of blowing up Nighthawk. The Hulk quickly swatted aside Hyperion
and Dr. Spectrum and Dr. Strange entrapped the Whizzer within the
Vapors of Valtorr. Quickly getting to his feet, Dr. Spectrum went for
Nebulon's weapon and used it to absorb the Gamma energy from the Hulk,
transforming him back into Bruce Banner. He then used the Power Prism
to create an energy fan that blew away the Vapors of Valtorr, freeing
the Whizzer, who knocked out Dr. Strange as Hyperion squeezed Valkyrie
into unconsciousness. The group then stood over the defeated Defenders,
noting that they had heard the Hulk mention that Nighthawk had joined
the Defenders. The Squadron Sinister then made their way to the
hospital where the injured Nighthawk was being treated and Dr. Spectrum
created a giant energy hand that busted into Nighthawk's room and
grabbed him. Pulling the recovering Nighthawk to them, Dr. Spectrum
gloated that Nighthawk would soon die alongside his Defenders
teammates. The freed Defenders and their ally Yellowjacket soon came to
Nighthawk's rescue and Dr. Spectrum attempted to encase Dr. Strange in
a soundless energy cube, preventing him from casting spells. While
battling Hyperion, the Hulk clapped his hands together, generating a
shockwave that knocked Hyperion back, destroyed the wall behind him and
shattered Dr. Spectrum's Power Prism. Frantic and now powerless, Dr.
Spectrum stumbled and fell from the rooftop he was standing on, rescued
by the now-freed Dr. Strange, who slowed Dr. Spectrum's fall using the
Moons of Munipoor spell. Spectrum landed atop the equally unconscious
Hyperion and Whizzer, defeated.
(Avengers I Annual#8 (fb) -
BTS) - After the Prism was shattered, Roberts and the other Squadders
were ensorcelled by Dr. Strange to forget their criminal pasts and
return to normal life (That trick
never works but Doc keeps using it). Roberts returned to his
revival shows.
(Avengers I Annual#8) - When
the Avengers' Wasp became possessed by the Power Prism, the Avengers
split up to seek the assistance of the various former Squadron Sinister
members in separating the Wasp from the Prism. Beast traveled to the
Trinity Park Religious Revival event to seek out evangelist Billy
Roberts. Arriving in the middle of one of Roberts' sermons in which he
preached a portion of his followers' income being a small price to pay
for salvation, a bored Beast waited until Roberts mentioned if anyone
had a need he could fulfill before leaping from the audience to
confront Roberts. A surprised Billy Roberts asked what Beast wanted and
Beast explained the facts onstage before moving backstage to give
Roberts the details of his submerged memories and past dealings with
the Power Prism. After the Beast restored his memories, a calm Billy
Roberts related the story of how he had originally come about the Power
Prism and claimed that he had been possessed by the Power Prism much in
the same way the Wasp had been. He then asked Beast to take him to the
Power Prism, as he was sure it could once more be brought under
control. Brought to Avengers Mansion, Roberts claimed to be there to
help the Avengers in their time of need and, after relating his
experiences with the Power Prism to the heroes, Roberts approached the
unconscious Wasp. Black Panther quickly noticed that the Power Prism
was levitating towards Roberts and realized that Roberts had deceived
the team in an effort to reclaim the Power Prism for himself. He
briefly regained control of the gem and battled the Avengers but
Krimonn the Power Prism soon abandoned him for Thor.
(Defenders: Strange Heroes - Doctor Spectrum entry - BTS) - Billy
Roberts' identity as Doctor Spectrum became known to the authorities
and he earned an official criminal record.
Comments: Created by Len Wein, Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson.
This profile was originally a
subprofile in the
Krimonn
the Power Prism profile written by Omar Karindu, Snood
& Hugo V. Negron. I tried to preserve as much of the original
subprofile text as possible, hence the quartet of writing credits below.
Billy Graham + Oral Roberts = Billy Roberts
The "new" Doctor Spectrum was created by Len Wein, Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson, but [the identity and character] of Billy Roberts was created by Roger Slifer and George Perez. He technically first appeared in Defenders I#13, but this wasn't revealed until Avengers Annual#8 when Roberts was actually introduced. It appears that Slifer created him in order to explain how Dr. Spectrum could wield the gem after Krimonn rejected Obatu. Of course, Len Wein was trying to do the same when he had Spectrum claim Nebulon removed the gem's personality in Defenders I#13, so I tried to resolve the conflicting explanations in the history section [of the Krimonn the Power Prism profile].
The Marvel Database Wiki lists the
Billy Roberts Dr. Spectrum as appearing in a flashback in Defenders
I#36 but that couldn't be Billy in the flashback, as the flashback is
to when Nighthawk was a villain in the Squadron Sinister. Billy Roberts
never actually served alongside Nighthawk in the Squadron Sinister
during a time when Nighthawk was a villain. By the time, Billy joined
as the new Dr. Spectrum, the heroic Nighthawk was forced into rejoining
the Squadron Sinister but ultimately betrayed them to warn the
Defenders. Therefore, the Dr. Spectrum in the flashback to when
Nighthawk actually was a villain with the Squadron Sinister has to
Kinji Obatu rather than Billy Roberts.
The Doctor Spectrum OHotMU entry in Defenders: Strange Heroes mentions that Billy Roberts' hair color was black but it looked gray to me in Avengers I Annual#8. Opinions?

CLARIFICATIONS:
Billy Roberts should be distinguished from:
Bob Farmer was a Detroit, Michigan sanitation worker who found the discarded Power Prism in the garbage. Not coveting anything aside from what he could earn through labor, Bob was also an honest and god-fearing man who attended church and attended one of Billy Roberts' revival shows. Bringing the Power Prism with him, Bob donated the Prism to Billy Roberts' revival.
