History:
(Marvel Comics I#1 / Saga of the Original Human Torch I#1) - After the android Human Torch escaped confinement and ran amok through New York City, he ran through the yard of gangster Tony Sardo and dove into Sardo's pool, drawing the attention of Sardo's henchman, Red. Red looked out the window and, noticing the burning grass, reported what he saw to Sardo. At first brushing off Red's remarks and claiming Red was nuts, Sardo looked at a newspaper story about the Human Torch and quickly realized what was going on. Sardo then ordered Red to put the glass winter cover over the pool and drain it without asking questions. Red did as ordered and once the water and air had been drained from the pool, Sardo spotted the flameless Human Torch trapped in the pool.

(Avengers I Giant-Size#3 (fb) / Avengers I#133 (fb)) - Sardo and Red looked down through the glass pool cover at the powerless Human Torch.

(Saga of the Original Human Torch I#1) - Red asked if the man inside the sealed up pool was the person Sardo figured it would be, Sardo replied in the affirmative.

(Marvel Comics I#1) - When Red asked "so what?," Sardo claimed he liked Red's stupidity and an annoyed Red commented that he didn't like that kind of talk before Sardo interrupted to explain how they could use the Human Torch as an enforcer in his fire insurance protection racket. When Sardo mentioned that their first "customer" would be the Acmen Warehouses, Red noted that steel didn't burn but Sardo quickly tried to explain to the dim-witted Red that the Human Torch could melt steel and that he would ignite as soon as oxygen hit him. Red then asked what their next move should be and Sardo ordered him to get the car out so they could pay a visit to Acmen Warehouses.

On the way to Acmen, Red again questioned how the freakish Human Torch could be of any use to their racket and when they arrived, Sardo announced that he would show Red before ordering Red to stay in the car while he ventured inside to speak with Acmen's president, Mr. Harris. After Sardo failed to sign Harris up for his protection "insurance," he returned to Red in the car and ordered Red to take them back to his mansion so he could enact the next phase of his plan. Once back at the mansion, Sardo then ordered Red to refill the pool and get a diving suit and glass tube large enough to fit the Torch. Red did as instructed and Sardo donned the diving suit to trap the Torch inside the glass tube before ordering Red to pull the glass tube containing the Torch out of the pool.

(Marvel Comics I#1 / Saga of the Original Human Torch I#1) - After Red pulled the tube-encased Torch from the pool, Sardo then had Red and another henchman carefully place the inert Human Torch into the back of a truck. Sardo, Red and Sardo's other thugs then drove over to Acmen Warehouses to enact Sardo's plan. Sardo ordered Red and his men to slowly lower the Torch into one of the warehouses.

(Saga of the Original Human Torch I#1) - As Red and the other thugs were carefully unloading the Human Torch into the Acmen Warehouses building, one of the thugs noted how the building housed so many crates, boxes and heavy equipment and Sardo replied that most of those things typically wouldn't catch fire quickly using their old methods but he announced that something new had been added to their methods that night.

(Marvel Comics I#1 / Saga of the Original Human Torch I#1) - Sardo himself then shattered the glass, unleashing the now-fiery Human Torch on the warehouse as he ordered Red and his men to leave. Sardo and his gang then returned to Sardo's mansion to await the destruction the Human Torch would cause but the naive Human Torch realized Sardo's true intentions and that he was being used, soon returning to Sardo's mansion to confront the racketeer. As the mansion was set ablaze by the Human Torch and Sardo fled into his steel-doored lab, Red ordered the rest of Sardo's men to flee the scene but the Human Torch soon emerged from the burning mansion, causing the terrified gangsters to hide. The terrified Red crawled beneath a car and was killed when the Torch set the car afire.

This profile was originally a subprofile alongside the rest of Sardo's thugs in the Anthony "Tony" Sardo profile written by John Kaminski. I tried to keep as much of his original text from the subprofile as possible, hence the dual writing credit.

Marvel Mystery Comics I#92 retells the Human Torch's origin in the form of a fictional, in-universe, newspaper-produced comic strip that the Human Torch reads as part of an announcement about his creator Professor Horton's death. This fictional comic strip takes a lot of liberties with the original story but thankfully, what doesn't work with the established origin of the Torch can simply be written away as being false fictional accounts imagined by the newspaper, who likely didn't have all of their facts straight since they weren't actually there for the origin. Some of the contradictions with the original origin seen in Marvel Comics I#1 are:

Despite having a tan suit in Marvel Comics I#1, Red is wearing a green suit and hat in the one-panel flashback in Avengers I Giant-Size#3 and a blue suit in the flashback in Avengers I#133.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Red
should be distinguished from:

Al

Al was one of Sardo's thugs that aided in carrying the inert Human Torch to Acmen Warehouses, Inc. and he was later present at Sardo's estate when the Human Torch returned to confront Sardo over being used in his protection racket. When the Torch set the estate on fire, Red suggested Al and the other thugs flee the scene but the Torch quickly caught up, killing Red by melting the car he was hiding under. Al and the others dove into Sardo's pool to hide from the Torch but the Torch boiled the pool water, scalding Al and the thugs. Realizing the uncontrolled nature of his powers, the Human Torch allowed Al and the other thugs to flee the scene.

While Al was technically behind-the-scenes amongst Sardo's thugs in Marvel Comics I#1 (1939), he didn't actually appear on-panel until Saga of the Original Human Torch I#1 (1990) and even then, he was unidentified. However, a fictionalized version of him that is identified by name appears in an in-universe newspaper comic strip seen in Marvel Mystery Comics I#92 (1949). Given Roy Thomas' penchant for continuity and retconning to fit things in from the Golden Age, I wouldn't be surprised if he had the unidentified thug in Saga of the Original Human Torch I#1 that resembles the fictionalized Al from Marvel Mystery Comics I#92 drawn to look like him on purpose as a way of giving a nod to that fictionalized account in Marvel Mystery Comics I#92. After all, he kept Sardo's first name of Tony, which was established in that very same fictionalized account!

Sardo's other thugs

The two other men who worked for Tony Sardo in his criminal pursuits. They assisted Sardo in capturing the Human Torch and drove him to the warehouse that his flames destroyed. When the Human Torch returned to Sardo's estate to seek vengeance against Sardo and his men, Red crawled beneath a car and was apparently killed when the Torch set the car afire. Al and the other two were boiled in Sardo's swimming pool by the Human Torch's flames hitting the water but were otherwise left alive.
