First Appearance: Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (1984)

Powers/Abilities: Jhagur is an experienced warrior, apparently carrying at least some of the skills of his past incarnation Ath'Agaar. 

    In his time on Earth, his physical labor enhanced his physical strength, endurance, etc. His strength level is undefined, but it is at least comparable to a human athlete or peak human, if not slightly superhuman ("enhanced human").

    He carries a long sword and is a skilled and deadly swordsman. 

    He can fire indigo (see comments) energy from his eyes that can incinerate flesh, leaving behind only the underlying bone. 

    When injured, he could generate a gray substance to cover and heal his body; this substance was highly corrosive to human flesh. However, Amanda Tower, who possessed advanced psychic powers, could contact the gray substance without harm, allowiing it coat her body, and enabling her to commune with Jhagur in the Void Indigo (see comments). 

    Jhagur apparently communed with the Void Indigo, which guided him to locate/gather the Dark Lords.

    Unlike (or at least much greater) than other Geburans, Jhagur possessed a "Ninth Sight," a mystic power that allowed him to look beyond his immediate environment -- even beyond this world into other realms -- and then to follow his vision to what he saw. 

    Connected to Amanda Tower and Linette Cumpston, he felt pain when they were injured.

    Jhagur was a highly skilled warp-drive capable starship pilot, able to contend with a large flagship in a smaller starship.
    He was experienced and successful in dangerous maneuvers, at least until distracted psychically. 

    For Geburans, composure, precision, and silence constitute the hallmarks of the art of sexual intercourse.

    His belt contains a photochromatic camouflaging function, allowing him to replicate the appearance of another humanoid whose appearance he views/captures.
    Beyond his alien accent, after he adopted a human appearance via this function, none beyond those already aware of his true nature recognized him as anything other than the human he purported to be.

    He also used a trilingual processor that allowed him to master an alien language its their vernacular within weeks.  

    He rapidly gained knowledge and appreciation of human culture via extensive reading and viewing of televised media.

    At least before the final confrontation with Kaok, he consistently suffered visions and violent spasms in the hour before dawn; these resolved spontaneously at dawn.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (fb) - BTS) - By the late 20^th century (see comments), Hyborian warrior-chieftain Ath'Agaar had been reincarnated in the extraterrestrial Jhagur of the planet Gebura (on the far side of the galaxy; see comments), whose forehead bore a curious birthmark in the precise location of the jeweled spike that had penetrated Ath'Agaar's skull.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (fb) - BTS) - Jhagur witnessed frantic "erogenic frenzy" (mating activity) of other worlds amongst other species, and it never failed to both fascinate and appall him.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (fb) - BTS) - Jhagur led a space fleet fleeing a dying star and battling the drones of unidentified technological wizards; after the first exchange of fire, only two spacecraft remained intact: One imperial flagship and Jhagur's ship.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo - BTS) - Seeking to atone for past crimes, Koth -- one of the Dark Lords who had tortured Ath'Agaar and been destroyed when he shattered the Living Orb/Eye of Kaok and who had been reincarnated in the form of gold medalist pentathlete David Tepper (see comments) who had developed myasthenia gravis -- resolved to assure his permanent demise by engineering his own murder and thus bringing together the souls of Ath'Agaar and the Dark Lords for a final confrontation. Koth therefore cast his eidolon (astral self) through the Void Indigo (astral realm) to where Jhagur's ship opposed the technological wizards' flagship.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo) - Seeking to confirm Jhagur to be the reincarnation of Ath'Agaar, Koth's eidolon entered his ship and examined him. Touching Jhagur's birthmark, Koth found that Ath'Agaar's fury and his lust for vengeance abided there undiminished by time or space. As Jhagur was distracted by Koth, the imperial flagship blasted his ship; its engines damaged and its power ebbing, Jhagur had no choice but to flee. 

    Shutting down all systems but minimal life support, Jhagur channeled his craft's remaining power to its tachyon drive, hurtling across light years until the ship's power was all but deleted. Jhaguur then banked his ship and opened fire, badly damaging the imperial craft. However, before Jhagur could fire a lethal strike, Koth -- seeking to ensure that Jhaguur returned to Earth -- distracted Jhagur by projecting his voice into his mind, and the imperial flagship blasted Jhagur's ship, causing it to crash on the Earth below...in the very desert where the Citadel of Erok (Ath'Agaar's last base) once stood...in what is now New Mexico. 

    Jhagur rushed out of the ship moments before it exploded, leaving him stranded, although he vowed in time that he would somehow contact his brethren on Gebura. After days of aimless wandering, Jhagur arrived in Quimby, New Mexico, where he observed a number of people in a trailer park, regarding them as proto-sentients. After witnessing a sexual escapade of prostitute Linette Cumpston with Charlie Blodgett that then proceeded to Charlie preparing to batter Linette, Jhagur approached, ordering Charlie to desist and depart quietly. When Charlie attempted to stomp on Linette's face, Jhagur fired a bolt of indigo (see comments) energy from his eyes that burned the flesh from Charlie's left foot. 

    Linette then stole Charlie's truck, and Jhagur accompanied her. After he told her his name, Linette joked that his first name must be Mick (after the Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, in case you somehow didn't get that...), and he adopted that name. She further asked if he could make himself less conspicuous, and Jhagur touched a jeweled-stud on his belt, activating its photochromatic camouflaging function, and he adopted the appearance of a man on a Camel cigarettes billboard ad. 

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (fb) - BTS) - After several days, they arrived in North Hollywood, California. They abandoned the truck in the San Fernando Valley and rented a small furnished apartment from Katy-Did Apartments. Linette further obtained various forms of identification for "Mick Jagger."

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo) - While Linette worked as a waitress, Jhagur spent his days in the apartment, immersed in media, mastering the vernacular with the aid of his trilingual processor: Within weeks, he was fluent enough to begin his own job-hunting expedition. Lacking educational credentials and with a markedly foreign accent to his English, Jhagur drifted from one strenuous job to the next, accruing more muscle mass than wages. In the evening, he studied at home, reading voraciously: Darwin and the Bible, Einstein and Velikovsky, Homer and Harold Robbins. He enjoyed the combination of hard work and intellectual stimulation, as well as Linette's undemanding companionship and her acceptance of his alien nature. 

    After months, Jhague conceded the possibility that he may spend the rest of his life on Earth, and he fairly easily adjusted, with Earth's people and topography seeming to resonate with some heretofore unvisited aspect of his personality. However, his sleep remained troubled, as in the hour before dawn he spasmed violently, moaning loudly and awakening Linette as he had brief glimpses of images from Ath'Agaar's final days; at dawn, his torments ceased, and they both fell back to sleep.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (fb) - BTS) - Mick Jagger became foreman at a site in Santa Monica, California to build an office tower.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo) - When Pete Mulgrew unearthed the jeweled spike that had been used on Ath'Agaar and then showed it to "Mick," Jhagur lost control, grabbed it, and attacked Pete. The other workers subdued "Mick" and took the jeweled spike from him.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (fb) - BTS) - The workers called Linette to take him home.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo) - After Linette gave Jhagur some tea, he explained how the object was from his dreams, and he needed to seek out it and the faces from his dreams. Subsequently watching the news, Jhagur saw a story about the dying David Tepper and -- recognizing his face from his dreams -- rushed to see him at the Dorman-Conner Medical Center before he died. Bypassing both the nurse and David's mother while in his human appearance, "Mick" shook David, demanding to know about the "void indigo" and "Ath'Agaar" he had been chanting, and David/Koth told Jhagur he had been Ath'Agaar long ago and that he/Koth had slain him. Koth then told Jhagur the events of 11,000 years ago before noting how they had reached the next age of barbarism, when all involved in the past conflict could be regathered by the Void. Having guided Jhagur in his dreams, he told him to hunt down the others and Ren and learn what the Void wished from him. Tepper then died soon after, and Jhagur blasted him with eyebeams (perhaps this action prevented Koth's resurrection) before adopting his true form and fleeing.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo (fb) - BTS) - Back in their apartment, Jhagur explained things to Linette, which took all night.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#11: Void Indigo) - At dawn, Jhagur noted that he would see to it that his enemies would know him, and he had Linette sew him a warrior's garment, a reminder of Ath'Agaar to stir in his foes the same "resonances" that Earth evoked in him. Jhagur further forged a new version of the sword he had wielded as Ath'Agaar.

(Void Indigo#1) - Guided by the Void, Jhagur slew transvestite Brita after she murdered transvestite prostitute Larry for refusing sex, leaving a note reading "Void Indigo" nailed into her head as a sign to the other Dark Lords. 

(Void Indigo#1 - BTS) - Investigation of Brita's death by Det. Jay Wallerstein led him to Britta's associate, Amanda Tower, who contacted Taro (associated with a cult worshipping Kaok), who in turn sent someone to shoot Amanda. 

(Void Indigo#2 (fb) - BTS) - Surviving the assault, Amanda drove herself to a doctor's office.

(Void Indigo#1 - BTS) - Pete Mulgrew's daughter, Colleen, was drawn to the jeweled spike, which gave her knowledge of Kaok and Zhered-Na and affected her behavior;

(Void Indigo#1) - "Mick" warned Pete about how the spike could affect and was a danger to him and others, and Pete warned "Mick" to stay away from his house/family, or he would kill him. As Jhagur traveled to Pete's house, Colleen tapped into othe spike's power, explosively destroying the house and taking on a winged form that then assaulted Jhagur. Noting itself to be of the "Beyond-World" and to be the living will and power of Kaok, the transformed Colleen leapt into Jhagur's sword, vowing to destroy him first with ecstacy and then with flame.

(Void Indigo#2) - As Jhagur fought back against possessed Colleen, the jeweled spike pierced the neck of nearby acid-user Peace Barwock and claimed his right eye, transforming it into a new Living Orb and using it to blast Jhagur before vanishing with Colleen. The (then unidentified) Cosima (later revealed as the daughter of Amanda Tower) cut off a piece of the fallen Jhagur's hair and departed with it.
    A then-unidentified young girl living in wilderness (Cosima) cut off a piece of Jhagur's hair and took it with her.

(Void Indigo#2 (fb) - BTS) - Jhagur's body coated itself in a gray healing material, and he was taken to Dorman-Conner hospital.

(Void Indigo#2 - BTS) - Linette fainted upon seeing news report of the fallen Jhagur in custody.

(Void Indigo#2 - BTS) -  Wallerstein visited Amanda and Jhagur in the hospital, telling Amanda of Jhagur's being in the same hospital.

(Void Indigo#2) - Contact with gray material oozing out of Jhagur's pores burnt skin from Dr. Jacobs' hand.

(Void Indigo#2) - Having healed herself, Amanda donned a nurse's uniform and then accessed Jhagur's room and kissed him. The gray material coated her as well, and they spiritually communed in the Void Indigo. 

    Jhagur then recovered, while Amanda shared some of his power; they returned to Linette's apartment where he convinced Linette to allow Amanda to stay with them. While Amanda considered Linette an insect, Jhagur noted that she was his friend; regardless, Amanda demanded physical relations with Jhagur in return for the information she would share with him.

(Void Indigo#3 (unpublished, from Gerber's script) "SISTERS and ASSASSINS"

    Jhagur and Amanda Tower consummated their physical relationship, during which they achieved a bizarre psychic meld. From Amanda's mind, Jhagur drew certain information about Taro's cult, the imminent reawakening of the Dark Lords, etc. In return, Amanda gained information about the Void itself and the past of her own soul.

    Linette was inadvertently drawn into the experience: She became alarmed at the indigo energy emanating from their eyes and sheathing their entire bodies during the experience, and she tried to pull them apart. Trapped in the energy field herself, she also "saw" some of what they saw. She may be bound to both of them psychically as a result.

    When it was over, Linette was released from the energy field, and she collapsed in a faint. Jhagur placed her on the sofa to let her sleep and recover. He had been changed by this experience himself: Something he had seen had profoundly disturbed him. He told Amanda to stay and look after Linette. He may be gone for... some time. Amanda agreed to do so, but after Jhagur departed, she departed with a snicker, noting "Let the 'insect' take care of herself."

    Jhagur undertook a journey of another kind:  On a bus, in his human guise, he headed back to the New Mexico desert.

4 (unpublished, from Gerber's script) "JOININGS AND AWAKENINGS"

    Off on the desert, Jhagur prepared for his ritual, a purification rite -- based on a custom of Ath'Agaar's tribe, perhaps -- of solitude and fasting. As he was at a critical point in his ritual, cult assassins mortally wounded Linette, agonizing and threatening both Jhagur and Amanda.    

    At first, Jhagur was utterly baffled as to the source of the agony wracking him. As he probed inward for a cause, he found himself looking outward simultaneously -- and somehow he saw Linette. As a result, he became aware that the indigo energy from his eyes, while a trait of his alien species, had a greater meaning for him. It was something called "Ninth Sight," a mystic power that allowed him to look beyond his immediate environment -- even beyond this world into other realms -- and then to follow his vision to what he saw. The information he obtained from Amanda was crucial to his understanding of this revelation. Mastery of this power would be the first step toward the transformation of his own soul, from vengeful warrior to seer. He had yet to gain that mastery, however; and before he might do so, Linette's pain could kill him.

    Amanda astral-projected to Linette. Amanda's psychic energies are so powerful that her astral form is able to be seen and to act upon the material world. Amanda picked up a telephone and called an ambulance for Linette. Amanda then tries to return to her own body ... but she could not even project out of the room! Back in Beverly Hills, another of Taro's assassin squad had delivered a mortal wound to Amanda's physical body, which died, and her astral form started to lose its solidity.

    Out in New Mexico, Jhagur was also feeling this, linked to both Amanda and to Linette. In desperation, trying to preserve herself as a conscious entity, Amanda psychically forced her way into Linette's body. With Amanda in control, suppressing the pain of Linette's wounds, Linette's body staggered out of Delfine's apartment and back to her own.

ISSUES #5 AND #6: "DOMINION AND REBELLION" 4 (unpublished, from Gerber's script)

    As Jhagur's ritual reached its culmination. Ath'Agaar and Ren appeared to him in a vision. His ancient self cautioned him against merely seeking empty vengeance. There are better reasons than that for destroying this evil. In the last moments of his life, Ath'Agaar says, he learned the limitations of rage. Jhagur reached out for Ren, and she took his hand, but when they touched, wounds opened on her body, progressively replicating the wounds inflicted upon her by the Dark Lords, and she crumbled to dust. Ath'Agaar also began to deteriorate in the same manner; as he crumbles into dust, he stated that, on the other hand, Jhagur ought not forget vengeance entirely.

    The final clash took place on the desert, naturally, with Jhagur first doing a one-man "road warrior" routine against the cultists and their vehicles, then finally coming face to face, after 11,000 years, with the Dark Lords. His sword and his eye-blasts were pitted against their magic, while the Eye of Kaok loomed overhead.

    There seemed to be very little chance that Jhagur can win this battle, and when the Dark Lords carried him up into the Eye, into the Beyond-World, all seemed lost. But they had reckoned without Linette's effect on Colleen, without the psychic powers of Raka (a psychic Linette had seen), without little Cosima's ferocity, and without Jhagur's knowledge -- however incomplete -- of the power of his "Ninth Sight." 

    Peering past the horizon of the mortal world, Jhagur saw and called upon all the past incarnations of his soul to aid him in his battle. Ath'Agaar returned, as did an Amerindian warrior, a Samurai, a Hun, a Visigoth, and a whole host of other warrior-types, earthly and otherwise, whose lives he had lived. Jhagur was now living -- or reliving -- all of these lives at once. Together they battled their way past the Dark Lords and down into the den of the demigod himself.

    The monstrous Kaok, of course, could not be defeated by a thousand swords. Jhagur insteaad tackled Kaok bodily, directing his eye-blasts at the creature. And they tumbled out of the creature's den, through several dimensional planes, to the Void Indigo itself. Here Kaok is very vulnerable, not only to Jhagur's attacks but also to the psychic assault of all the hundreds of thousands of souls whose lives he had cut short those 11,000 years ago. Kaok met his end, torn limb from ectoplasmic limb by a million psychic fingers from beyond, delivered to those fingers by Jhagur.

    Upon Kaok's death, the Eye of Kaok exploded again, spewing its substance over the desert, and depositing Raka, Cosima, the surviving cult members, etc., on the sand. Jhagur's other incarnations had vanished, as has Linette.

    Jhagur was furious as there was no reason for Linette to die and because she was an innocent pawn in this battle. Having achieved his revenge but lost his only friend -- and with still no sign of Ren -- Jhagur wandered off into the desert alone.

(Void Indigo#6/epilog - BTS) - Back to North Hollywood. Linette's physical body recovered, and she developed the carnelian red appearance of Jhagur (which Amanda had adopted after her union with Jhagur) and then used one of Linette's phrases, "God Almighty Dog."

    Marvel Graphic Novel#11 / Void Indigo identifies the planet Gebura as "some 50,000 light years" from Earth and being on "the far side of the galaxy." Recent estimates note that the Milky Way galaxy is 100,000 - 120,000 light years across, and that Earth is 28,500 light years from the center of the Milky Way. We have a lot more information/knowledge now than we did in 1984, when that information was published.
    Marvel Graphic Novel#11 / Void Indigo has Jhagur consider Earth as having a nitrogen-blue sky...presumably indicating Gebura's sky was different. However, Jhagur could breathe on Earth without assistance. 

    The last name of Koth's reincarnation was Trepper in Marvel Graphic Novel#11 / Void Indigo, but it was Tepper in subsequent issues of the Void Indigo series. 

    The energy Jhagur fired at Charlie Blodgett was shown as yellow and described as indigo. Due to the significance of indigo in this series, I think the coloring is in error.

VOID INDIGO

• The Void Indigo stories -- creator-owned by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik -- referenced Zhered-Na and Sominus, both creations of Gerber and Mayerik back in the (Adventure into) Fear series.
• Marvel Graphic Novel#11 / Void Indigo has the aged Dark Lords Eeyok, Hemuth, Koth and Zepharr invoke "Kaok, lord of Sominus, whose seed spawned Zhered-Na in the world's dark womb" and call upon his power via blood sacrifice. They sacrificed thousands of young men and women from their five citadels under their rule, regaining some small measure of their lost vigor. Seeking greater power, they then tortured and sacrificed the barbarian chieftain Ath'Agaar and his lover Ren for greater levels of power.
• The graphic novel Void Indigo references Atlantis and the Great Cataclysm (with the Dark Lords being survivors of pre-Cataclysmic Atlantis) and the above conflict took place circa 9000 BC, fitting in with the Hyborian era. An artifact from the conflict was mystically borne nearly 1000 miles away (almost to the sea), ending up in what is now New Mexico. The region that is now North America was known as Novum Terra in the Hyborian era and was minimally referenced in the Conan stories.
• There was a six issue follow-up Void Indigo series planned, but it was cancelled after only two issues. The scripts for issues #3-6 can be found here.
• The modern portions of the Void Indigo story does not reference other modern aspects of Earth-616.
• Ultimately, there is no official ruling on Void Indigo...for whatever reason, I didn't review the series until someone told me in March of 2022 that Zhered-Na was referenced in it, which led to my appreciation of all of this material. I was therefore unaware of this information when I wrote the Zhered-Na profile for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.
• Having reviewed the Void Indigo graphic novel and series/scripts, it my assessment is that there are elements of Reality-616 present in this storyline, which would either make them the same reality or just a reality with common elements. However, there is nothing to exclude it from being Reality-616, and when that's the case, I would certainly not err on the side of exclusion. I think it would add nicely to the tapestry that is Reality-616.. 
• I think it would fit perfectly -- even if likely not what was intended at the time of publication -- to have the modern Void Indigo stories locked into 1984, the time in which they published, rather than being part of the sliding timescale. That would have them taking place decades before the Fantastic Four's space flight. 
• Regardless, it is interesting to consider Zhered-Na's connection to Kaok and Sominus. 
• Specifically, it says that Kaok's seed spawned Zhered-Na. That would seem to make him her father, although "seed" could also refer to his child, making Zhered-Na his granddaughter. 
• Sominus being a realm of demons puts an interesting spin on Zhered-Na, who was a benevolent sorceress worshipping the god Valka. 
• Clearly there's more to the story, but tragically, Steve Gerber passed years ago, and we can't ask him. 
• I talked to Val Mayerik, but unfortunately, he doesn't remember the details. But, I'm hoping that doing these profiles may jog his memory...
