DOMINA
History:
(X-Men II#106 (fb)) - For generations, Domina's Neo community lived
peacefully, hidden from ordinary humanity. They relied on their
abilities that had become integral to everyday survival.
(Gambit II#22 (fb) - BTS) - Although the Neo lived a sheltered
existence, they did have dealings with the outside world. In the past,
the Neo had contact with the New Orleans' Guilds, holding them in high
regard. Their shared experiences became part of Neo lore.
(X-Men II#106 (fb) ) - Domina was part of a line of Neo that reached
back to the community's founders. She lived together with her parents,
her lifemate Jaeger and their daughter.
(X-Men II#106 (fb) ) - When the High Evolutionary suppressed all mutant
powers across Earth, the effect on the Neo community was catastrophic.
Buildings and systems dependent on mutant powers failed, killing many
inhabitants. Domina watched her parents die in the devastation. Her
daughter, whose powers allowed her to survive underwater indefinitely,
was submerged when her powers vanished and could no longer reach the
surface before drowning. Jaeger helped rescue survivors, but could do
nothing for their child.
(X-Men II#106) - Domina wanted to
have died in her daughter's place and howled until grief left her
emotionally hollow. The surviving community needed a leader and she
became its chieftain, turning that grief into a
fierce determination to strike back at those she held responsible.
(X-Men II#99) - In the immediate aftermath of the catastrophe, Domina
carried her daughter's body through the ruins while Jaeger stood beside
her. She noted that enough Neo had survived for their people to endure,
but rejected their former policy of living peacefully apart from
ordinary humans. Domina declared that the deaths of their people would
be avenged and that the survivors had chosen war.
(X-Men II#102 (fb) - BTS) - Domina led the Warclan's campaign against
the High Evolutionary's ally Mr. Sinister, striking and destroying
seventeen of the evil geneticist's bases and facilities.
(X-Men II#100 (fb) - BTS) - Domina learned that the X-Men were working
to salvage the High Evolutionary's space station from which he had
carried out his plan that almost led to their extinction. She ordered
her subordinate Seth to infiltrate the salvage crew and destroy the
station from the inside out.
(X-Men II#102 (fb) ) - Domina faced Mr. Sinister in each of the
seventeen bases. During one confrontation, she single-handedly destroyed
a clone of Sabretooth and a copy of Sinister, incinerating his body with
her eyebeams.
(X-Men II#100) - Domina led the Warclan's hunt for Nightcrawler in
Brooklyn. She watched as Rax shot the teleporting mutant when he
preaching at St. Michael's church in Brooklyn. Rax wanted to follow his
wounded prey, but Domina gave her lifemate Jaeger the honor to chase
down their target instead. She sent out Jaeger to finish off both
Nightcrawler and anyone who had come into contact with him.
(X-Men II#100 - BTS) - Jaeger pursued Nightcrawler across Brooklyn. He
ultimately fled to Cecilia Reyes' Brooklyn clinic to get his wounds
treated. Despite her lack of combat experience, Cecilia held off the Neo
with her protective forcefield long enough for Nightcrawler to recover
and join the right. When Jaeger was about to kill Kurt, Reyes
instinctively lashed out with her forcefield, forming it into large
spikes that impaled her opponent. The Warclan recovered Jaeger's body
and brought it to Domina in their chosen stronghold in the Church of St.
Michael the Archangel at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
(X-Men II#100) - Domina was contacted by Seth who informed her that he
had accomplished his mission to destroy the High Evolutionary's space
station. Domina was pleased, but she still didn't agree with Seth's
desire to save Kitty Pryde who he had fallen in love with and who he
believed to be a Neo. Their discussion was cut short when the Warclan
brought in Jaeger's body. As they watched the space station explode in
the atmosphere and the X-Men's shuttle escaping, the grieving Domina
dressed down Rax who was eager to become the new Jaeger. She sharply
reminded him that without her sanction, he was nothing and that she
alone led the Warclan. Domina then led the Warclan in a ritual to honor
their dead, howling so loudly it terrified Cecilia Reyes and
Nightcrawler who were still nearby.
(X-Men II#101) - Mad with grief, Domina ordered the Warclan to chase
down Jaeger's killers.
(X-Men II#102) - When the X-Men attacked the Warclan to free the people
stuck inside St. Michael's church, Domina personally entered the battle.
She identified herself as the Warclan's leader and happily demonstrated
the defining privilege of the Domina: assuming the powers of clan
members as a personal gestalt. She used borrowed strength, power
disruption, hunting reactions and weapon-forming abilities in rapid
succession, turning Psylocke's telekinesis back against her,
neutralizing Rogue's stolen powers and even negating Thunderbird's
plasma attack. Domina singled out Cecilia Reyes as Jaeger's killer and
tried to avenge him. She was interrupted by Nightcrawler who managed to
briefly distract her before Wolverine was able to intervene and take her
out. With the X-Men gaining ground, Domina ordered the Warclan's
Barbican to seal the stronghold, forcing the X-Men to withdraw. Only
Cecilia Reyes remained inside.
(Gambit III#22 - BTS) - The young Warclan member Rax wanted to prove
himself in the eyes of Domina and decided to fight Gambit on his own in
New Orleans.
(Gambit III#22) - When Domina and the Warclan arrived, she acknowledged
that the fight had been Rax's own but reminded him that his clan was
always beside him. She told him that killing Gambit would not by itself
make him leader, although success would improve his position in her
eyes. Domina then stopped the conflict. She told Gambit that the
Warclan's war was with the "Spikes," not with him or the ancient guilds,
and that she still remembered the Old Kingdom with respect. She
deliberately spared Gambit's life over Rax's desire to finish the job,
making clear that the choice was hers. She also accepted Rax back into
the clan.
(X-Men II#106) - During a Neo ritual of remembrance, Domina relived the
Harrowing, the deaths of her parents and daughter and the later loss of
Jaeger. She admitted that Jaeger's courage and skill had been without
equal, yet found herself unable to cry for him; instead, the image of
Cecilia Reyes as his killer remained fixed in her mind. Domina again
confronted the X-Men while Rax rebelled against her authority using the
killer Rufus Delgado and his mind controlled victim Charlotte Jones as
his accomplices. Domina was easily able to handle Delgado and the X-Men,
shifting her hands into blades and stabbing Wolverine in the back. This
paused the battle long enough for Elysia to finally question if the
X-Men were truly to blame for the worldwide power loss that decimated
the Neo. Domina wrestled with this decision, but decided to let the
X-Men and everyone let inside the church go free. She watched them go,
while Barbican closed up the church again with his powers.
(X-Men II#110) - At the
abandoned St. Michael's church, Domina sensed the arrival of a power she
regarded as an untamed force of nature. Magneto tore open the Warclan's
stronghold and ordered the Neo to kneel, declaring that he would no
longer tolerate mutants warring among themselves. Domina refused and
ordered Rax and Salvo to kill him. Magneto destroyed both attackers with
overwhelming ease. Confronted with power the surviving Warclan could not
oppose, Domina submitted and ordered her people to join Magneto's cause
in Genosha.
(X-Men: Giant-Size I#1 - BTS) - Years later the Evolutionaries judged
the Neo an evolutionary dead end and exterminated the species worldwide.
Cyclops subsequently confirmed that all Neo, everywhere, had died.

Domina was the principal Neo character introduced during Chris
Claremont's return to the X-books in 2000. "Domina" is a Warclan
leadership title. Her given name has never been revealed, but since
she's a Claremont character five'll get you ten it's 'Trix'.
Speaking of Chris Claremont... Those first few X-Men issues are
a convoluted mess. As a concept, the Neo are a tough enough sell. . It's
hard enough to introduce one team of new enemies, but Claremont decided
to bring in no less than four subgroups of Neo who were little more than
their codenames and interchangeable costumes. Add to that weird pacing
issues like Domina learning that Jaeger had died both in X-Men I#100
and in X-Men I#101.
Not to mention Rax going from a young boy to a full-blown adult between
issues (in later issues this Rax was retconned as 'Tartarus', a name
also used by a totally different Neo and, well... *sigh*... Scott
Lobdell wiping out the entire Warclan the moment Claremont left the book
was a brutal, but ultimately necessary call.
Domina's last physical appearance was in X-Men II#110. It's
possible she lived through Cassandra Nova's assault on Genosha, but she
definitely did not survive the Evolutionaries' worldwide extermination
of the Neo.

CLARIFICATIONS:
DOMINA should not be confused with
Domina and Jaeger had a daughter who was as home
underwater as she was on land. The girl would often spend extended
periods submerged in the Neo's hidden habitat. She was under water
when the High Evolutionary shut down the powers of every mutant on
Earth, causing the girl to drown. Her mother Domina brought her
lifeless body back to land. The loss of her child motivated Domina,
Jaeger and the other members of the Warclan to come out of hiding to
take their revenge.
--X-Men II#99, 106
Domina's parents were part of a ruling class of Neo whose bloodline dated back to the founding of their community. As leaders of the Warclan, they held the belief that the world belonged to the Neo and that they would inherit the planet once humanity had destroyed itself. The Warclan kept to themselves, living in a hidden community that was dependent on their superhuman abilities. However, when the High Evolutionary shut down all forms of mutant abilities, the long-lived couple could no longer sustain their existence. They crumbled to dust in front of their daughter, who took over as leader of the Warclan and sought to avenge their deaths.
