JAEGER
Real Name: Unrevealed

Kilmer,
Rax, Salvo,

First Appearance: X-Men II#99 (April, 2000)
Powers/Abilities: Jaeger possessed specialized
tracking abilities befitting his role as the Warclan's Hunter. He was
able to effortlessly pursue his targets even in crowded cities. Jaeger
could absorb (superhuman) powers and abilities by tasting the blood of
that particular individual. He could channel the energy-shaping ability
of his lifepartner Domina, forming his "lariat of fire," an energy line
sharp enough to tear through heavy stone and structural material. It is
unrevealed whether this was a general power-copying ability or a
specific link between Jaeger and Domina. Jaeger also claimed he made
Nightcrawler's teleportation power his own, but he was never seen using
this power. Jaeger was a skilled and patient hunter and an experienced
hand-to-hand combatant. He carried firearms, bladed weapons and other
hunting equipment and was able to hold his own against highly agile
opponents like Nightcrawler at close range.

History:
(X-Men II#106 (fb)) - For generations, Jaeger's Neo sect the Warclan
lived peacefully, hidden from ordinary humanity. They relied on their
abilities that had become integral to everyday survival.
(X-Men II#106 (fb) ) - Jaeger's lifemate was the Warclan's leader
Domina. She was part of a line of Neo that dated back to the founding of
their community. They lived together with her parents and their
daughter.
(X-Men II#106 (fb) ) - When the High Evolutionary suppressed all mutant
powers across Earth, the effect on the Neo community was catastrophic.
Buildings and systems dependent on mutant powers failed, killing many
inhabitants. Domina watched her parents, whose bloodline reached back to
the community's founders, die in the devastation. Her daughter, whose
powers allowed her to survive underwater indefinitely, was submerged
when her powers vanished and could no longer reach the surface before
drowning. Jaeger helped rescue survivors, but could do nothing for their
child.
(X-Men II#106 (fb) - BTS) - The tragic events became known among the
surviving Neo as 'The Harrowing'.
(X-Men II#99) - In the immediate aftermath of the Harrowing, Jaeger
remained beside Domina while she carried their daughter's body through
the ruins. Raging with grief and hungry for revenge, Domina called on
Jaeger and the other survivors to avenge the deaths of their fellow Neo.
(X-Men II#100 - BTS) - The Warclan held the X-Men
partially responsible for the Harrowing and began to target the mutants.
(X-Men II#100) - Jaeger joined Domina and the others on a hunting
expedition to take out Nightcrawler, who was working as a priest in
Brooklyn's Church of St. Michael. Rax shot the X-Man during his
religious studies, but he managed to teleport away. Jaeger figured he
could not have gotten far, only to be chastises by Domina who reminded
him the Neo could not afford assumptions. She ordered Jaeger to give
chase and kill Nightcrawler and anyone he contacted. Jaeger accepted the
hunt as blood repayment for the deaths suffered by his fellow Neo.
(X-Men II#100 - BTS) - Jaeger tracked Nightcrawler down while he fled to
Cecilia Reyes' Brooklyn clinic.
(X-Men II#100) - Jaeger managed to taste
Nightcrawler's blood. Jaeger informed his prey that he had made his
powers his own. He then summoned a portion of Domina's energy shaping
powers, creating a fiery lariat with which he attempted to capture his
target. He found himself opposed by Cecilia Reyes who demanded to know
who he was. He only gave his title: Jaeger, adding that nothing else
mattered. Jaeger then attacked, only to find Reyes' mutant force field
powers stronger and more adaptable than expected. But he also correctly
analyzed she wasn't an experienced, trained fighter so he simply planned
to press the attack until she made a mistake. This allowed Nightcrawler
enough time to recover. He managed to initially stagger Jaeger with his
speed and agility, but Jaeger remained on his feet and eventually caught
him with a well-timed blow. Jaeger prepared to kill Nightcrawler with a
knife. Terrified that she was about to watch another person die, Cecilia
reacted instinctively. Her force field projected outward in long spikes
and impaled Jaeger, who instantly died from his wounds.
(X-Men II#100) - The Warclan recovered Jaeger's body and returned it to
Domina later that same night who was overwhelmed by grief and renewed
fury over the loss of her lifemate.
(X-Men II#100 - BTS) - Moments after learning about Jaeger's death, the
overly ambitious Rax made it known to Domina that he wanted to become
the Warclan's next hunter. She dressed him down for speaking out of
turn.
(X-Men II#101 - BTS) - Mad with grief, Domina ordered the Warclan to
chase down Jaeger's killers.
(X-Men II#106 (fb) - BTS) - During a Neo ritual of remembrance, Domina
relived all her recent tragedies including the loss of Jaeger. She
admitted that Jaeger's courage and skill had been without equal, yet
found herself unable to cry for him, instead she wanted to take down his
killer Cecilia Reyes.
Comments: Created by Alan Davis, Terry Kavanagh,
Brett Booth and Sal Regla.
"Jaeger" is a Warclan title rather than an actual personal name. Rax
proved this when he claimed the vacant title and everyone immediately
started to refer to him as 'Jaeger'. For the record: "Jaeger" is close
to the Dutch word 'jager', which means 'hunter'. Jäger (spelled Jaeger
in English) is also the German word for huntsman.
Not a lot is known about the original Jaeger, even the extent of his
powers remains a mystery. He claims he could copy people's abilities by
tasting their blood, but after sampling Nightcrawler's he didn't grow a
prehensile tail and he never teleported on panel. Perhaps he would need
to master certain abilities, an untrained teleporter could easily end up
materializing in a wall. He certainly had enough time to familiarize
himself with Domina's energy-shaping power
Jaeger's death and the return of his body to Domina both occur in X-Men
II#100 and in #101, which is a little odd but then again... It's only
appropriate given the massive misfire the Neo as a concept turned out to
be.
