Powers/Abilities: Toadthrax was the premiere sorcerer of Shadow-Earth, capable of many destructive magical feats.

    He could project an enormous image of himself over the battlefield, and "demons" could pour forth from his mouth. His image could rain lightning or fire down onto the battlefield, with the precision of being able to select individuals to target.

    His crystal ball let him communicate (and possibly is what allowed him to project his image) across continental distances.

Height: 4'6" (by approximation, when standing upright)
Weight: 120 lbs. (by approximation)
Eyes: Complicated.

Right eye: It consistently has no pupil, and often has a "lens flare" sparkle. The color is mostly obscured by the sparkle, but on the cover it's red, and in the story it changes from white to yellow to pink. It's implied to be magical and not his original eye.
Left eye: It consistently does have a pupil. When depicted as an image in the sky, the color seems to match the sky and not his physical form. When we see his physical form, his left eye is bright red. However, the cover has it as a "normal" eye.
My explanation is that the cover is an error and accidentally reversed the colors, and his right "sparkle" eye is indeed magical and does shift colors, his left eye is red all the time (and that's way more thought than the colorists put into this topic).

Hair: None

History: (Strip#1) - Toadthrax unleashed hordes of flying demons from his giant image projected over the kingdom of Haven to attack defenders in the castle. He was supporting the invasion of Kang, who ruled Charon and to whom he owed allegiance.

(Strip#3) - At the besieged castle of Haven, as the hordes of Kang scaled the walls with ladders, Toadthrax's image shot lightning bolts at the defenders on top of the walls, which allowed the hordes of Kang to breach the castle.

(Strip#4) - Toadthrax cast a spell from his lair in Charon through his crystal ball "Black Sky! Crimson Rain! Perish by fire in Toadthrax name!" which sent a rain of fire through the mouth of his projected image onto Haven's defenders in the castle courtyard. Karbunkle Grimtoad cast a counterspell "The wind of the mountain, wind of the sea, wind of the desert - join all three" which blew the firestorm back upon the hordes of Kang. However, this allowed Toadthrax to zero in on Karbunkle and slay him with a powerful lightning bolt. The rest of the royal party of the queen and the prince escaped.

(Strip#8) - Having taken over Castle Haven, Kang awoke in Ranald's bed, declared it too soft and demanded it be stuffed with rocks and sharp objects. News that the flying machines he sent after the royal party had not returned sent him into a rage. He summoned Toadthrax by pulling on a hanging piece of cloth in Ranald's bedchamber (though presumably it was mostly because he shouted Toadthrax). Toadthrax answered via his crystal ball.

(Strip#9) - Kang ordered Toadthrax to find Queen Jade and Prince Eric and kill them. From his lair on Mount Malice, Toadthrax agreed and awakened four flying green fiends that were roosting upside down in his lab room and sent them after the royal party. "Seek out Eric and Jade and spread your wicked wings over all the land between here and the Vale of Tears - but find them! And kill them!" he commanded the fiends, and they departed.

(Strip#10 - BTS) - The royal party was walking along the edge of the Great Rift but were soon set upon by one of Toadthrax's fiends. Prince Eric was seemingly knocked into the Great Rift and Queen Jade was viciously clawed, despite Gretel demanding the beast leave them alone.

(Strip#11 - BTS) - As the fiend descended upon Queen Jade for the deathblow, Quanah perfectly threw his sword to slice through the fiend's narrow neck. The fiend plunged into the Great Rift. Prince Eric was found clinging to a small outcropping just below the trail. The Queen was poisoned by the fiend's claw, and Quanah took them all into the Hooly Wood forest as the other three fiends of Toadthrax searched for them.

(Strip#12 - BTS) - The three fiends passed overhead while the royal party sheltered in the thick Hooly Wood forest. Genghis searched his sorcerous tome for a cure for fiend-poison. He shouted the ingredients he needed while the rest of the party found them, and then he concocted the potion and saved Queen Jade. The next morning, the party pondered how to leave the forest without being seen by the fiends. Prince Eric asked Genghis to figure out a way with magic.

(Strip#13 - BTS) - Genghis tried to conjure a gentle breeze to waft them out of danger but summoned a raging tornado instead. The tornado picked up the entire party, except their steeds.

(Strip#14 - BTS) - Inside the tornado, Quanah screamed that he smelled doom coming for them. As the fiends of Toadthrax fled from the tornado, Genghis managed to end the spell. The party was dumped into the Ragnar river, and then floated directly towards the Endless Falls which emptied into the Great Rift, and went over.

(Strip#15- BTS) - The royal party was captured by the nets of Rift-Imps before plunging to their deaths.

(Strip#16) - Toadthrax viewed the royal party falling over the Endless Falls on his crystal ball and told Kang that they had perished in the Great Rift. It's unclear if his crystal ball had a delay or couldn't see into the Great Rift, since by then they had been captured and saved from plummeting, but the crystal ball only showed them going over the falls.

    He may have seen them captured by the Rift-Imps and was lying to Kang about their survival for an unknown reason.

    This story was serialized in 2-page installments in Strip#1-20, a bi-weekly Marvel UK anthology, from February-November 1990. See the comments on Genghis Grimtoad's profile for a more in-depth discussion of this story's origins in Look Alive magazine 8 years earlier. It was collected soon after as Marvel UK Graphic Novel#3, with 4 additional new pages to finish out Book One. (These pages were likely set to be published in Strip#21-22 before its cancellation.) To date, there has been no sign of Book Two and no further appearances of Shadow-Earth. This was published by Marvel UK but is (as far as we can tell from the indicia) creator owned and not owned by Marvel.

    Toadthrax never leaves his home of Mount Malice, and I get it. He can instantly communicate with anyone (ok, we can do that with cell phones), and can see anywhere in the world through his crystal ball with a slight time delay (ok, we can like call people up and have them show us things via video chat on their cell phones). But we definitely can't shoot seven lightning bolts at a time or summon tidal waves of fire or red flying snake demons anywhere in the world just by thinking about it. He also can straight-up lightning bolt-assassinate people who draw his attention from continents away. I think I'd be a homebody too if I had that much power. As fantasy sorcerers go, Toadthrax could beat the pants off Gandalf.

    This is a pretty fun story overall, but I would note that it appears to have some instances of racial caricature with a thin layer of fantasy on top of them. Quanah is a noble savage who speaks in broken English, whose body is covered with tattoos of his battles, with large, distended earlobes due to large wooden earrings hanging down past his shoulders, calling to mind several native cultures. The appearance of Bad King Kang and his Charoons (and their "Samurai" armor) seem to draw heavily from earlier caricatures of Japanese and other East Asian cultures. I feel these aspects are worth noting for today's readers.

    This story is an odd mix of serious fantasy and silliness. Lots of people die, there are some tragic sacrifices, and the party's whole quest is taken very seriously, but there are also names like "Hooly Wood" for a forest. While the party's humans are all drawn fairly realistically, the non-humans are almost uniformly drawn with very large eyes, which give them a cartoony look. This works well for the toads, but it looks extremely goofy elsewhere, particularly the Fiends of Toadthrax and the Rift-Imps, whom otherwise are treated as serious threats.

    The cover of this Graphic Novel is one of those that does not occur anywhere in the actual story. At no point is Queen Jade's head surrounded by light, and at no point do they visit floating mossy rocks, and at no point does Toadthrax menace them directly.

    This profile was completed 06/18/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary event to represent Ganymede's stories and characters.

    Only appearing in one panel, the image of Toadthrax has these demons pouring out of it to overwhelm the defenders of the castle of Haven. The "demons" appear similar to flying snakes, with two large fangs and an oversized jaw, though they are bright red.
