History:
(What The--?! I#18/2 (fb) - BTS) - Hoagy Bear and his
little pal Bobo lived in Jamstone National Park, often stealing
visitors' picnic baskets for food or harassing the park ranger. But
increasing pollution and rubbish made Hoagy more and more despondent.
(What The--?! I#18/2) - Bobo hoped to make park
mischief with Hoagy but the big bear was upset about all the pollution
and called for a meeting of the park's residents, declaring that they
should all leave and abandon polluted Earth, and instead find a new
planet by stealing and commandeering a space shuttle from a nearby NASA
space base. Although the other park inhabitants were initially unsure,
they recognized the increasingly foul state of the environment and
followed Hoagy's lead. Unbeknown to the Jamstone desperadoes, Peter
Porker (secretly the heroic Spider-Ham) was at the base to take photos
of the base. Park pal Haggletooth joined Hoagy in wearing simplistic
scientist disguises to bypass security guards, although last-minute
violence drew Spider-Ham's intervention. Park denizen Rawhide knocked
out Spider-Ham and the park desperadoes took the crawler-transporter
that held the space shuttle rocket and escaped back to Jamstone
National Park. But Spider-Ham found them using a pre-planted spider
tracer and confronted them. Discovering their plan, he urged them to
instead clean up the Earth, difficult though it may be, it was better
to fix what they had rather than running away.
(What The--?! I#18/2 (fb) - BTS) - The shuttle was returned and charges against the Jamstone denizens were dropped.
(What The--?! I#18/2) - Hoagy and his friends happily
cleaned up rubbish from the land and river in Jamstone National Park,
with Bobo predicting the park ranger would also like it.

Hoagy Bear is based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Yogi Bear, who lives in Jellystone National Park with his li'l sidekick bear Boo-Boo. Several other Hanna-Barbera cartoon cast provide the template for this story's characters; the white horse Quick Draw McGraw becomes Rawhide while Snagglepuss becomes Haggletooth. Unnamed duplicates for the duo Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy plus Scooby Doo and others can also be seen. I'm not sure why the writer went with HB copies, but this issue copied a lot of other non-Marvel characters for parody/humor value (in this case, also insightful, although it was those in Jamstone National Park that ended up cleaning up other people's rubbish).
Hoagy's name would be derived from "hoagie", an
American delicacy of a large sandwich in a split roll filled with deli
meats plus salads, often similar to "subs" and the like (great for
picnics), which is in line with the original Yogi Bear's voracious
appetite for picnic basket meals..

CLARIFICATIONS
:
Hoagy Bear has no known connections to:
Bobo was the diminutive pal of Hoagy Bear in Jamstone
National Park, often eager to join in park pranks. When Hoagy became
despondent about the excessive pollution and rubbish in the park, he
helped gather the other park residents and listened to Hoagy's plan to
steal the space shuttle from a nearby NASA base to abandon Earth and
find a new planet. Once Hoagy returned with the stolen shuttle, Bobo
cautioned Hoagy about the ramifications. The heroic Spider-Ham
confronted them and urged them to instead clean up what they had
instead of seeking to escape the pollution. Agreeing with this
viewpoint, Bobo joined the others in cleaning up the park.
--What The--?! I#18/2
Haggletooth was a feline resident of Jamstone
National Park. Fellow park denizen Hoagy Bear convinced the park
inhabitants to join him in stealing a nearby space shuttle to escape
the overly polluted Earth and search for a new planet. Haggletooth
joined Hoagy in wearing simplistic scientist disguises to bypass
security guards at the space base, although last-minute violence drew
the heroic Spider-Ham's intervention. Nevertheless, the heist was
successful and they took the shuttle into the park. The heroic
Spider-Ham soon confronted them and urged them to instead clean up what
they had instead of seeking to escape the pollution. Agreeing with this
viewpoint, Haggletooth joined the others in cleaning up the park.
--What The--?! I#18/2
An Old West-themed white horse, Rawhide was a resident of Jamstone National Park. Fellow park denizen Hoagy Bear convinced the park inhabitants to join him in stealing a nearby space shuttle to escape the overly polluted Earth and search for a new planet. Rawhide helped in the theft by using his guitar to knock out the heroic Spider-Ham, who tried to intervene. The heist was successful and Hoagy's park desperadoes took the shuttle into the park. The heroic Spider-Ham soon confronted them and urged them to instead clean up what they had instead of seeking to escape the pollution. Agreeing with this viewpoint, Rawhide joined the others in cleaning up the park.
