History:

(Marauders I#12 (2020) - BTS) - Jumbo always felt different even before his mutation.

(X-Men: Hellfire Gala I#1 - BTS) - Jumbo started balding when he was still in high school.

(X-Men: Hellfire Gala I#1 - BTS) - Right out of high school Jumbo started experimenting with fashion as while he and his friends were flat broke they sure didn't have to look it. Jumbo would regularly visit thrift stores to dress himself and his friends. Jumbo would do all kinds of jobs to make rent and ended up doing security for Dazzler on tour where he met the White Queen.

(Marauders I#12 - BTS) - Jumbo eventually became a fashion designer, but this left Jumbo feeling under-appreciated and undercapitalized.

(Marauders I#7 (fb) - BTS) - Jumbo visited the runways of New York and Paris where in its heyday he was mesmerized by a model who would later become the Morlock leader Callisto.

(X-Men: Hellfire Gala I#1 - BTS) - A big fan of Janet van Dyne's fashion designs, Jumbo Carnation attended van Dyne's fashion show in Venice where the two briefly met.

death

(New X-Men I#134 (fb) - BTS) - Jumbo Carnation capitalized on the surge of mutant acceptance following Charles Xavier's public coming out. He designed a line of mutant specific fashion accessories like tentacle stockings and wing gloves. Collaborating with other pro-mutant enterprises like X-Factory, he soon made a name for himself. Carnation's bubbly, outgoing personality made him an instant celebrity and an idol of many mutant teens, including Xavier Institute students like the Stepford Cuckoos, Quentin Quire, Slick and Tattoo.

(New X-Men I#137 (fb) - BTS) - Jumbo Carnation was hooked on Kick, a new aerosol drug based on hypercortisone-D that caused intense euphoria and power amplification in mutants (in reality Kick was the malevolent microbe Sublime).

(New X-Men I#134 (fb) - BTS) - Hopped up on kick, Jumbo Carnation spent the night at a club in New York's Mutant Town, partying it up and drinking his fair share of fruity cocktails.

(New X-Men I#134) - Following his night of clubbing, Jumbo Carnation said goodbye to his fans and tried to hail a cab. When no drivers would stop for him, Carnation turned to a group of passing humans, teasingly asking the "big, primitive humans" if they could help him find a taxi. Recognizing the bloated, garishly cloathed mutant as Jumbo Carnation, the boys acted like they were fans and asked for autographs. They then proceeded to mug him, grossed out by his plastic like skin. However, they freaked out when Carnation froze up and fell to the ground, gasping for air and being killed by an internal explosion that never breached his skin.

(Fantastic Four: Marvels Snapshots (2020) - BTS) - The day after Jumbo's death the news covered the story, mentioning Cyclops and Beast were seen conferring with NYC police.

(New X-Men I#134 - BTS) - News of Jumbo Carnation's death made headlines and alarmed students at the Xavier Institute who were horrified at the loss of a mutant icon. When Emma Frost learned from the Stepford Cuckoos who Carnation was, she sent Cyclops and Beast to assist the local authorities with investigating his death. Meanwhile at the school, Slick decided to give a concert to honor Jumbo while a distraught, emotionally fragile Quentin Quire turned to Kick and used Carnation's death to form the Omega Gang.

(New X-Men I#134) - Cyclops and Beast assisted officer Foster in his investigation of the crime scene. Standing around the chalk outline of the victim, Beast was ashamed to admit he found the lingering smell of Carnation's burned remains to be delicious (see comments). He then used his enhanced senses to sniff out the area, picking up a trace that led him to a discarded Hypercortisone-D inhaler.

(New X-Men I#137 - BTS) - Studying the autopsy reports on Jumbo Carnation, Beast concluded that the human muggers didn't kill Jumbo. His death was caused by an inadvertent, self-administered Kick overdose. Sharing this knowledge did not help convince Quentin Quire and the Omega Gang to stop their plans to take over the Xavier Institute and kill all humans. However, thanks to Sophie Cuckoo sacrificing herself by using Cerebra, the powerful telepath Quire was taken down.

(War of the Realms: War Scrolls#2 - BTS) - Following his death, Jumbo Carnation's legacy was continued by a group of New York based gay men and drag queens who took his name for their "house" (as their groups, led by a respected "house mother" are called). Now known as the House of Jumbo Carnation, one of their queens, Krystal M'Kraan was seen competing for trophies, prizes and glory at events known as balls.

(Marauders I#7 (fb) - BTS) - After the establishment of the sovereign mutant nation of Krakoa, Emma Frost , White Queen of the Hellfire Trading Company, used her sway to return her favored mutants first, among them Jumbo Carnation.

(Marauders I#4 - BTS) - Following the Krakoan resurrection protocols, Jumbo Carnation was among the many mutants resurrected by the Five (Egg, Elixir, Proteus, Hope Summers, Tempus). Jumbo Carnation was one of many who accepted the invitation to remain on the sovereign mutant island nation, ruled by the Quiet Council.

(Powers of X I#4 - BTS) - Sinister reported (the Red Diamond news and gossip from Bar Sinister) Jumbo Carnation had returned and opted mutants should stop wearing human clothing.

(Marauders I#4 - BTS) - Jumbo was sighted alongside Emma Frost, White Queen of the Hellfire Trading Company, in Manhattan's fashion district shopping for red and white fabrics. However, the CIA made a report on the sighting mentioning Jumbo had died years before. The CIA were scratching behind their ears as they had the coroner send over the file, confirming his death. This left the CIA speculating.

(Marauders I#12 - BTS) - Resurrected, Jumbo's creativity detonated like a bomb. So happy to create and please Emma Frost. Jumbo suffered from nightmares.

Needing to recharge his battery, Emma supplied him with an expense account to travel. Jumbo traveled the world by private jets with other designers and models, something which was restorative for Jumbo. Faced with many questions about his "absence", Jumbo explained he'd faked his own death until the world deserved him again. Jean Paul Gaultier was charmed bout the idea to try it himself. Emerging himself back into the world of fashion, Jumbo enjoyed seeing what other designers were doing and filled a sketchbook with new looks. The traveling learned him he had nothing in common with humans anymore.

However, just then Jumbo was targeted and possessed by a corrupted version of Quentin Quire created by the mysterious anti-mutant cabal XENO. Possessed, Jumbo attacked the mutant teenagers.

(X-Force VI#18 - BTS) - Phoebe and Quentin rescued Jumbo from his possession although still unaware XENO had caused it.

(Excalibur IV#20 - BTS) - When Betsy Braddock appeared before Krakoa's Quiet Council, Kate Pryde reminded Betsy she needed to visit Jumbo Carnation before the Hellfire Gala something which was later repeated by Rogue when Betsy was seen going through her dresses. In the end, Betsy did visite Jumbo to create a special dress for the gala.

(Cable IV#10) - Jumbo visited the Summer House on the Moon where he took Cyclops' measurements for the Hellfire Gala. When he noticed young Cable, Jumbo remarked he still had to make his Gala fitting appointment or risk looking a fool.

(Marauders I#20 - BTS) - Emma Frost stayed out of Jumbo's way as he worked on Kate Pryde's outfit while making sure room was left for a specially created broche by Frost.

(X-Corp I#1) - Jumbo was seen working on a new collection of uniforms for the corporate X-Corps from his personal store. Jumbo used advanced technology while working on Bishop which he controlled with one set of hands while using his remaining hands to sketch.

(Marauders I#21 - BTS) - Even before the inaugural Hellfire Gala started Emma Frost and Jumbo had already decided on a theme for next year's Hellfire Gala.

(Marauders I#21) - All of Jumbo Carnation's hard work had payed off when the inaugural Hellfire Gala commenced, welcoming the very best of the superhero community and leaders from around the world to celebrate mutant culture and strengthen Krakoa's friendship with the nations of man. A fearless and unimpressed Jumbo grabbed the giant Reaver with his four arms and slammed him to the ground after which he stomped the cyborg's face. Shortly after another one of the Reavers tried to burn Jumbo, however, with his teflon-like skin impervious to fire Jumbo charged and attacked the remaining reavers. Comments: Created by Grant Morrison, Keron Grant, and Norm Rapmund.

Jumbo Carnation was one of the first out mutants readily and openly accepted by the mainstream media, which made for a refreshing change of pace from the usual "hated and feared by the world" theme seen in X-Men comics up until then. It's interesting to note that the one outfit we see him in looks a lot like a standard spandex superhero outfit, but with added bling, platform shoes and a white fur coat to emphasize just how he has risen above the cliches and is all about chic and class.

Leave it to Grant Morrison to include a subtle, but oh so creepy moment when he had Beast describe the smell of Jumbo's cooked internal organs as "delicious". Icky beyond belief, and yet, it's not that hard to believe well-marbled meat marinated in vodka and orange juice would smell at least a little appetizing.

Strictly speaking, Jumbo never faced Sublime but his Kick addiction caused his death so it's safe to say he wouldn't be a fan of the villainous, sentient bacteria.
