History:
(X-Treme X-Men I#5 (fb) - BTS) - The mutant martial artist
Paul Hark was the heir apparent to Sydney's Triad, led by his
grandfather Gow Yang Ju.
(X-Treme X-Men I#5) - After Gow was murdered, his interrogator the
Examiner (secretly the killer) convinced Hark that the X-Men
Gambit and Rogue were responsible. Believing these claims to be true
when he ran into them near Gow's body, Red Lotus attacked and defeated
the temporarily depowered mutants. He then turned them over to the
Examiner.
(X-Treme X-Men I#6) - Red Lotus watched as the Examiner tortured Rogue and Gambit, but began to doubt their guilt and ordered the interrogation stopped. The Examiner refused to obey orders and incapacitated him instead using his needles. After Rogue and Gambit escaped their restraints and drove off their captor, they took the unconscious Red Lotus with them for his own safety as they returned to the X-Men.
(X-Treme X-Men I#7) - Rogue, Gambit and Red Lotus returned to the X-Men's Sydney hideout, only to encounter Sebastian Shaw and Lady Mastermind, who had already attacked Sage. Shaw and Lady Mastermind captured Rogue and forced Gambit and Red Lotus to retreat. Red Lotus used his enhanced physical abilities to get himself and Gambit safely to street level, after which the two agreed to work together to rescue their friends and expose the conspiracy.
(X-Treme X-Men I#8) - Red Lotus confronted Sebastian Shaw
while attempting to free Sage. In a silent battle of will and wits,
Lotus realized his most powerful blows only made his opponent stronger.
Shaw nearly managed to defeat the martial artist, but Lotus got away
when he used his knowledge of the human body to hit Shaw's vital nerve
clusters, which induced temporary paralysis.
(X-Treme X-Men I#8 - BTS) - Thanks to Red Lotus' interference, Shaw
retreated from Sage's loft.
(X-Treme X-Men I#9) - Red Lotus and Gambit interrupted a meeting of the Triad's ruling council and presented evidence showing that the Examiner had murdered Gow Yang Ju and conspired with Sebastian Shaw to seize control of Australia's criminal syndicates. The Examiner was taken into custody and Gambit was cleared of the accusations against him.
(X-Treme X-Men I#11 - BTS) - Red Lotus joined the X-Men
for their rescue mission to Madripoor after the interdimensional bruiser
Shaitan had kidnapped Gambit and Lifeguard. Shaitan was planning to use
the powerful jewels of Madripoor that Gambit had been gathering to open
a dimensional portal for his master, the conqueror Khan (see
comments). The X-Men managed to beat back the initial invasion
force, even kidnapping Khan and escaping with him into Madripoor proper.
(X-Treme X-Men I#11) - Red Lotus quietly helped guard Khan
and several of his troops that the X-Men captured during their defense
of the city. He was unable to prevent Madripoor's underworld leader Viper
from assassinating the aliens from a distance. Despite this heinous act,
the X-Men agreed to a temporary truce and accompanied Viper to her
headquarters so they could plan their next move. However, not too long
afterwards they were tracked down by Shaitan who had come to free his
master Khan. During the fight, Red Lotus was hit hard by the monstrously
strong Shaitan and was left with serious injuries.
(X-Treme X-Men I#12) - The X-Men made sure Red Lotus was brought to a
field hospital in the Catacombs, the vast tunnel network underneath
Madripoor High Town where most of the island's population had gone into
hiding. Lifeguard looked after him, but the far less emotionally
involved Sage calmly concluded that he would recover.
(Uncanny X-Men I#453 (fb) - BTS) - Red Lotus resurfaced in Hong Kong as
part of a faction attempting to reform the Hellfire Club from within.
Working with Courtney Ross and Viper, he helped investigate and
dismantle a mutant slave operation.
(Uncanny X-Men I#453) - When Marvel Girl infiltrated the Hellfire Club's
Hong Kong casino, Red Lotus intervened to protect her. Paul Hark
explained the faction's true objective.
(Uncanny X-Men I#454) - Red Lotus assured Marvel Girl that the captive mutants would be rescued, but Selene quickly showed her true colors. She attacked him and began draining his life force. Marvel Girl engaged Selene and managed to fight off the disembodied energy vampire by passionately kissing Red Lotus, an act that created sufficient psionic backlash to overwhelm their foe. At the same time, Red Lotus's allies moved against the slave ring.
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont and Salvador
Larroca.
Talk about a character that fell through the cracks. Red Lotus can
form his own team with other overlooked Claremont creations that never
got their due like Sketch,
Slipstream,
Mechamage,
Lockdown
and Rosetta
Stone. Even his own creator seemed to forget that Red Lotus
still existed during the Kingdom arc. He was nowhere to be found
in #10 when the storyline got underway and the X-Men traveled from
Australia to Madripoor, but boom, there he is in the opening pages of
#11. Later that issue, he gets hurt and that's all she wrote until
Claremont brought him back for a brief stint in Uncanny X-Men
years later.
I guess it's understandable because there's nothing too distinctive or
memorable about a guy who is basically a very strong martial artist.
Although Red Lotus repeatedly fought beside the X-Men, he was nowhere
near as official a member as Lifeguard and Slipstream. In fact, I've
only listed him as a mutant because he was profiled in 2011's mutant
handbook and some sources claim he was BTS present on Krakoa.
Red Lotus received a profile in X-Men: Earth's Mutant
Heroes I#1.
