LIFEGUARD
Real Name: Heather Cameron
Identity/Class: Human/Shi'ar mutant hybrid, citizen of Australian
Occupation: Adventurer, formerly lifeguard
Affiliations: Avengers (Captain America/Steve Rogers, Firebird/Bonita Juarez, Iron Man/Tony Stark, Quicksilver/Pietro Maximoff, Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff, Thor, Vision, Warbird/Carol Danvers, Wasp/Janet Van Dyne, Wonder Man/Simon Williams, Yellowjacket/Hank Pym), Lisa, Multiple Man (Jamie Madrox), Ugly John (Steve), X-Men (Beast/Hank McCoy, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner, Shadowcat/Kitty Pryde, Wolverine/James 'Logan' Howlett), Red Lotus (Paul Hark)
Enemies: Australian police forces, Khan
and his invasion army, Lady Mastermind (Regan Wyngarde), Sebastian Shaw,
Thais, Thaiis, Shaitan, Tong assassins, Vargas, Viper
Known Relatives: Barbra Cameron (stepmother), Davis Cameron (brother), Miles Warbeck (father, deceased), unidentified birth mother (allegedly Deathbird), the Camerons (adopted family)
Aliases: 'Sis', '&%$#head' (nicknames used by
Davis Cameron)
First Appearance: X-Treme X-Men I#6 (December, 2001)
Powers/Abilities: Lifeguard's body adapts to any perceived threats by immediately evolving an appropriate response. Thus far, Lifeguard has formed a protective golden metal sheath over her skin, developed superhuman strength, grown gills and a fish-like tail, and has shapeshifted into forms many times her own size, ranging from a whale to a full-sized atoll. Once the threat that caused her mutant powers to activate has passed, her body reverts to normal. Her danger sense allows her to subconsciously act before the threat appears. Her most recent experiences caused her to perceive all of humanity as a threat, which resulted in her body secreting a highly potent toxin that causes severe allergic reactions in anyone without an X-gene. In this form, even her tears became corrosive. Her alien Shi'ar genome is of royal lineage. It has granted her avian-like traits, including wings capable of sustained flight and razor-sharp talons, as well as a predatory nature with unparalleled tracking skill. Heather is also a qualified lifeguard and an excellent swimmer.
Height: Variable. 5'10" (baseline human form), 7'
(baseline mutant form)
Weight: Variable. 130 lbs (baseline human form), 205 lbs.
(baseline mutant form)
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde (in human form), gold (in mutant form)
History:
(X-Treme X-Men I#7 (fb) - BTS) - Davis and his sister Heather Cameron were the children of Miles Warbeck, who was, unbeknownst to them, a major Australian crime lord known as the Viceroy, and an unknown mother (see comments). Given up for adoption, they were taken in by the Camerons who raised the two as their own in Surfer's Paradise.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#20 (fb) - BTS) -
Growing up in Surfer's Paradise at 39 Herrera Drive, Heather hated the
local mall because she felt everyone was always looking at her and
judging her for her looks.
(X-Treme X-Men I#6 (fb) - BTS) - While Heather became a lifeguard, her
brother focused on being the best surfer at Sydney's Surfer's Paradise.
(X-Treme X-Men I#7 (fb) - BTS) - Heather discovered she
was a mutant, but decided to keep this a secret. She only ever used her
powers to discreetly save people while on duty as a lifeguard. Unsure of
the extent of her abilities and without anyone to train her, she taught
herself through trial and error.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#19 (fb) - BTS) - Heather only
shared her true mutant nature with her best friend Lisa. She once saw
Heather grow gills when Heather rescued her from drowning.
(X-Treme X-Men I#6 - BTS) - When Miles Warbeck was killed during a gang
war the X-Men had found themselves involved with, Sage discovered the
Viceroy's hidden offspring Heather and Davis. Figuring they were now
targets as well, the team decided to seek them out and keep the two
safe.
(X-Treme X-Men I#6) - Locating both Heather and Davis at Surfer's
Paradise, Storm and Thunderbird went in to contact them. Neal tried to
charm Heather while she was on lifeguard duty, but their flirtation was
cut short when Davis was attacked by a shark while riding the waves.
Heather dove into the water, discreetly using her powers to make sure
Davis and Storm were returned to shore safely. Worried when Davis
remained unresponsive, she was amazed when Storm restarted her brother's
heart with a micro-sized bolt of lightning. After having recovered,
brother and sister agreed to go on a double date with Storm and
Thunderbird that evening. Their enjoyable night out was interrupted by a
cadre of Tong assassins sent to kill the Camerons.
(X-Treme X-Men I#7) - Heather Cameron was forced to use her mutant
powers in public for the first time, shifting into her large, golden
form to shield her friends from the Tong's attacks. Davis was shocked to
learn Ororo, Neal and his own sister were mutants, but he was enthralled
by how glorious Heather looked fighting the assassins. After the fight,
Storm and Thunderbird revealed to the Camerons who their biological
father was. While Heather couldn't care less about a man she'd never
even met, Davis reminded her that thanks to him they were now targets in
a gang war. Later that day, brother and sister Cameron were having a
chat about their situation at Heather's lifeguard station. Heather told
her disappointed sibling that if he had been a mutant as well, his
powers would have manifested themselves by now. They were joined by
Storm and Thunderbird who intended to take them to Sage to make sure
they wouldn't become involved in the gang war that was still raging on.
Heather wanted to do more: as a lifeguard, she vowed to help the
innocent and her father's death started a war that threatened other
people's lives. Storm and Thunderbird then flew off to Sydney with the
Camerons.
(X-Treme X-Men I#7 - BTS) - Under orders from Sebastian Shaw, the
illusion-casting mutant Lady Mastermind (Regan Wyngarde) had compromised
Sage, influencing the X-Men's mentat. Shaw and Wyngarde were at Sage's
Sydney loft, waiting for the other X-Men to arrive. They fought Rogue,
Gambit and their new associate Red Lotus, a fight that ended with
Wyngarde mentally controlling Rogue.
(X-Treme X-Men I#8) - While approaching Sage's loft, the X-Men found
themselves under attack from Rogue. The assault caused Storm and
Thunderbird to drop the Camerons. Heather saved herself by instantly
growing wings, while Thunderbird made sure Davis didn't fall to his
death. Lifeguard joined the fight against Rogue, which ended in the
possessed mutant's defeat. Moments later, they discovered Sage's
unconscious body.
(X-Treme X-Men I#9) - Heather Cameron was taking care of Sage's inert
form when she suddenly found her mutant rescue powers responding to
Sage's mental summons.
(X-Treme X-Men I#9 - BTS) - Sage secretly hid part of herself in
Heather's mind as she passed through her subconscious.
(X-Treme X-Men I#9) - Finding herself inside Sage's mental landscape,
Heather immediately switched to Lifeguard form. She got involved in
realistic recreations of Sage's younger days, holding back a violent
Afghani mob who were ready to kill Sage as a child. Heather also
witnessed how Charles Xavier mercilessly trained her to be his spy,
finding it hard to believe a man capable of such cruelty founded the
X-Men. Moments later, she was facing Lady Mastermind who was still
mentally controlling Sage from a distance. Heather was no match for the
mutant's terrifyingly realistic mental projections, but then Sage took
control of Cameron's mind. Sage switched bodies with Lifeguard and
managed to outsmart Lady Mastermind, ultimately shooting her with the
psionic representation of a gun. That defeat freed Sage and returned
Heather to her own body, furious at the unrepentant mentat for using her
against her will.
(X-Treme X-Men I#10) - Heather was with the X-Men in Australia when they
found themselves under attack from the monstrously strong Shaitan,
servant of the interdimensional conqueror Khan. Shaitan had come for
Gambit who had quietly been assembling the Madripoor set, a collection
of powerful gems capable of opening dimensional portals. Shifting into
her winged Lifeguard form, Heather grabbed Gambit and tried to fly him
to safety. However, Shaitan teleported them both away before they could
escape.
(X-Treme X-Men I#10 - BTS) - Heather and Gambit were taken to an ancient
temple site in Madripoor from where Shaitan would open a portal to allow
Khan and his troops to enter our dimension. Meanwhile, Heather's brother
Davis allowed Sage to jumpstart his latent mutant teleportation powers
so he and the X-Men could follow Shaitan and rescue their teammates.
(X-Treme X-Men I#10) - Lifeguard managed to free herself and futilely
fought Shaitan who was using Gambit's mutant lifeforce to power the
portal. By that time, the X-Men arrived but not in time to stop the
manifestation of a giant space pylon that allowed Khan and his forces to
pass through. The X-Men were unable to beat them, but did manage to
overpower Khan. The X-Men took him captive and disappeared into
Madripoor, but not before promising the trapped Gambit they would return
for him.
(X-Treme X-Men I#11 - BTS) - Khan's arrival caused the island of
Madripoor to be sealed off from the rest of the world. Legions of his
forces kept pouring out of the pylon, but despite the overwhelming
opposition the X-Men continued to fight back. Relying on guerrilla
tactics, they managed to hold their own.
(X-Treme X-Men I#11) - Lifeguard managed to save the crews of a squadron
of Madripoor fighter jets sent out to bomb the pylon. She also rescued
some of the alien pilots who had shot down the planes, returning them
all to a nearby rooftop where the X-Men were keeping Khan captive as
well. Moments after Storm arrived to interrogate the prisoners, the
group was attacked by Madripoor's underworld leader Viper who shot the
invaders. Even though the X-Men did not agree with Viper's violent,
murderous methods, they decided to follow the madwoman to her lair where
they could regroup and plan. Not long after arriving there, Shaitan
tracked them down and tried to rescue his master. Lifeguard managed to
keep her teammates from getting seriously injured, though their
associate Red Lotus was badly hurt. In the end, Khan freed himself,
defeating Viper and taking Storm to his base to be his queen.
(X-Treme X-Men I#12 - BTS) - Without their leader, the X-Men temporarily
retreated into the catacombs, an extensive tunnel network under
Madripoor where most of the civilian population was hiding. Lifeguard
kept rescuing people from the invaders, her constant shapeshifting
catching Sage's attention.
(X-Treme X-Men I#12) - Sage caught up with Lifeguard when she was in the
infirmary tending to the wounded Red Lotus. Heather was still furious
with Sage for having turned her brother into a mutant as well and had no
interest in the mentat's observations about the anomalies in her fluid
genome. Some time later, she joined the X-Men on their infiltration
mission to the pylon, disguising themselves as Khan's forces and
entering the temple where Gambit was being kept. They were unable to
take him out.
(X-Treme X-Men I#13) - After sneaking aboard Khan's flagship in orbit,
the X-Men got a moment to catch their breath. When Heather removed her
helmet, she was horrified to learn her face was now partly avian. She
initially blamed Sage for this inexplicable change and then was
comforted by Thunderbird while the team discussed their next move. They
were faced with a dilemma: Khan may have been a ruthless
interdimensional conqueror, but he also turned every world he controlled
into a paradise. Should they fight and risk it all, or surrender and
embrace a new age?
(X-Treme X-Men I#14) - The X-Men decided to fight, but
Heather was presented with a new mystery when Khan's forces recognized
her in her new avian form as a royal Shi'ar. Unsure of what all this
meant, she had no time to ponder the consequences. During the fight with
the invaders, the usually levelheaded, careful Lifeguard felt herself
slowly succumbing to an ever-increasing, bestial rage.
(X-Treme X-Men I#15) - Though she was struggling with her body's new
avian features, Heather managed to regain her composure. Aware that
Khan's forces perceived her as Shi'ar royalty, Heather used this to her
advantage, demanding access to a critical part of the pylon's control
systems with Bishop and Thunderbird as her disguised honor guard. Once
inside, they revealed themselves and destroyed Damage Control, allowing
outside forces to mount an attack on Khan's base.
(X-Treme X-Men I#16) - After making sure their mission in
Damage Control was accomplished, Lifeguard, Bishop and Thunderbird set
out to locate Sage who had gone on a solo mission to rescue Storm from
Khan's harem. Lifeguard's powers and innate Shi'ar predator genome
proved instrumental in tracking down her teammates and keeping them safe
from the ultimate destruction of the pylon. Without the construct, the
interdimensional portal created by Gambit and the Madripoor set
imploded. As a result, the pylon, Khan's flagship and all his troops
were sucked into oblivion. While the X-Men celebrated, Heather tended to
her injured brother Slipstream while realizing she herself now seemed
permanently stuck in her winged alien form. Storm tried to comfort her,
but had no answers for her either. Seconds later, they were horrified to
find Gambit and Rogue apparently stabbed to death by Vargas' sword.
(X-Treme X-Men I#17) - After removing the blade from Rogue and Gambit,
Bishop asked Lifeguard to quickly fly Remy LeBeau to the nearest
hospital. She did not want to leave her brother behind, but fell in line
when Bishop angrily ordered her to comply. When she returned to look
after Davis, he was utterly freaked out by her new appearance and didn't
want to believe this golden monster was his sister.
(X-Treme X-Men I#18) - Lifeguard and the X-Men went to a
local Madripoor field hospital to get treatment for their injured
teammates. There, Davis continued his feverish ranting, condemning his
sister as a monster. This greatly hurt Heather, who was still struggling
not to lose control and fly into a berserker rage. She was befriended by
the newly arrived Jean Grey, whose pleasant, kind demeanor helped calm
her down enough to prevent an incident.
(X-Treme X-Men I#18 - BTS) - Despite an open and honest conversation
with Nightcrawler, Davis Cameron could not accept his sister in her new
form. He left the hospital without making up with her, only leaving a
note and asking her not to follow him.
(X-Treme X-Men I#18) - Nightcrawler handed the heavily disappointed
Lifeguard her brother's note.
(X-Treme X-Men I#19) - Lifeguard joined the other X-Men
for some much-needed downtime in New Orleans. Staying at Destiny's
former home, she decided that she wanted to go out into the world to
locate and help her brother accept their new reality as mutant-alien
hybrids. She happily accepted Neal Shaara's offer to accompany her. The
other X-Men saw Heather and Neal off as they departed on their quest.
(Excalibur III#5 (fb) - BTS) - Under unrevealed circumstances, Lifeguard
and Thunderbird joined up with X-Corp, serving as members of the
organization's Mumbai branch.
(Excalibur III#5 - BTS) - Early one morning, Lifeguard sensed an
imminent attack on X-Corp's Mumbai skyscraper headquarters. Before she
could sniff out the threat, she was caught in the explosion caused by
one of Stripmine's trolls. She was trapped underneath the rubble.
(Excalibur III#5) - While she was waiting to be rescued, Heather was met
and comforted by the telepathic presence of Charles Xavier who had sent
his astral form to check on X-Corp Mumbai following news of the attack.
He stayed with Heather until Thunderbird located and freed her using his
plasma powers.
(X-Force VI#9 (fb) - BTS) - Lifeguard relocated to Krakoa where she made
a new life for herself (see comments).
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#19 (fb) - BTS) - Lifeguard
reconnected with her brother Slipstream who had also relocated to
Krakoa. The siblings made up and Heather was happy to see her brother
finding love with a fellow mutant.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#21 (fb) - BTS) - Lifeguard
enjoyed her time on Krakoa, participating in activities such as the
bi-weekly pub quiz hosted by Ugly John.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#19 (fb) - BTS) - Heather and
Davis got word that their adoptive mother Barbra had been diagnosed with
a terminal illness. The Camerons made sure she was given access to
Krakoa's advanced medicines, which helped improve her condition
considerably.
(X-Force VI#9) - Lifeguard was seen having a chat with Multiple Man
in Krakoa's Green Lagoon area. Enjoying the lagoon's waters, she had
shifted the lower half of her body into a mermaid's tail.
(Rise of the Powers of X I#5) - Lifeguard was among the countless
mutants from myriad realities whose souls were summoned to the White Hot
Room by Earth-616's Jean Grey to help her and the Phoenix finally defeat
the multiverse-spanning threat of Nathaniel Essex.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#19 (fb) ) - Heartbroken that
Krakoa was about to leave this dimension, Heather enjoyed one last swim
with her brother. The siblings had agreed that Heather would return to
Surfer's Paradise to care for their mother while he and his bride-to-be
would make a new life for themselves elsewhere. Heather moved back into
her childhood home.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#19 (fb) - BTS) - Without
Krakoa's medicines, Barbra's health began to deteriorate rapidly.
Heather did what she could to be her live-in caretaker, but she missed
life on Krakoa terribly. Ever since she had left the island, she had
felt permanently threatened and had been barely able to sleep. She also
found that assuming her original human form caused her increasing pain
and discomfort.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#19 - BTS) - Without her
realizing it, Heather's body had begun to defend itself against humans,
creating an airborne pathogen whenever she felt agitated.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#19) - Heather's best friend
Lisa drove her to the mall where she had a job interview for a
management position at a leisure center. During the interview, she was
forced to out herself as a mutant. Feeling threatened, her body began to
spread the pathogen, leading to the interviewers rapidly developing
itching, burning welts. Heather lost her cool, shifting into a
monstrous, spiky gold form and bursting through the wall, landing on the
curb next to Lisa who was also experiencing the effects of the pathogen.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#20) - Lifeguard lost control of
her body, shifting into her royal Shi'ar form as well as several other
non-human shapes. Her appearance frightened shoppers and got several
mall cops involved who opened fire on her. She inadvertently affected
over a dozen more with her pathogen before fleeing the scene.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#20 - BTS) -
Lifeguard's incident in the mall made the news, and was seen by Ugly
John, who was now living in Brisbane and running an online support group
for former inhabitants of Krakoa. Recognizing Heather, he decided to
seek her out.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#20) - Lifeguard made it home to
her mom, who was not afraid to hold her no matter how alien she looked.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#20 - BTS) - When Heather and
her mom hugged, she lost control of her form once again and
inadvertently stabbed the ailing woman with her newly manifested spikes.
Caught up in a blood rage, she hid on the ceiling.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#20) - Ugly John arrived at 39
Herrera Drive to find Barbra bleeding out on the floor of her home. He
quickly called an ambulance for her, unaware Lifeguard was ready to
pounce on him.
(X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comics I#21) - Shifting to her avian
form, Lifeguard swatted Ugly John away from Barbra with her wings.
Remaining calm, Ugly John reminded Lifeguard of the time they spent
together on Krakoa. He helped the highly emotional Heather realize that
her mutant defense mechanism was now targeting humans, all humans. Even
as the authorities surrounded her childhood home, Heather learned she
could no longer fit in with society. Even her tears had become as
corrosive as acid. Ugly John offered her sanctuary with Grizzly near
Tamborine Mountain. Lifeguard tried to fly off with Ugly John in her
arms, but a sniper accidentally hit him in the shoulder. Unable to make
it to the mountains before he bled out, Lifeguard landed near the ocean.
There, John assured her there was a way to adapt to this situation by
embracing her mutation's attempts to protect her. Realizing the truth in
his words, she stepped into the ocean and allowed her powers to fully
transform her body into a tiny atoll off the coast of Surfer's Paradise.
At the bottom of the ocean, where the newly born island connected to the
ocean floor, the body of Heather Cameron slept in peace.
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont, Salvador Larocca.
Lifeguard walked so Darwin could run... It's a pity Chris
Claremont never got around to fully fleshing out Heather Cameron's
Shi'ar roots. It's heavily implied she's of royal lineage, which means
she and her brother might be related to Deathbird. But after Claremont
suddenly shifted gears midway through his X-Treme X-Men run,
characters like Lifeguard, Slipstream and Red Lotus fell by the wayside.
Lifeguard's presence on Krakoa makes practically every mutant this side
of the Quiet Council a potential ally. For clarity's sake, only
characters she has been seen interacting with on panel, such as Ugly
John, Slipstream and Multiple Man, have been listed.
Lifeguard received profiles in Official Handbook of
the Marvel Universe A to Z I#6, Heroic Age: X-Men I#1 and
X-Men: Messiah Complex - Mutant Files I#1.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Lifeguard should not be confused with
Lisa met Heather when they were both teenagers. When Lisa almost drowned after a jellyfish stung her, she was rescued by the junior lifeguard who grew gills before her very eyes. Realizing Heather was a mutant, she promised to keep her secret. The two became best friends, reconnecting years later when Heather returned to Surfer's Paradise to help care for her terminally ill adoptive mother Barbra. Lisa drove Heather to the mall for a job interview and fell prey to Heather's new mutation, a pathogen that causes severe allergic reactions in all humans. She was eventually hospitalized but recovered. After Heather decided it would be best to disappear, Lisa took care of Barbra in the final stages of her life.
