History:
(Iron Man I#299) - Marcy Pearson learned from a mutual acquaintance (secretly
artificial intelligence VOR/TEX) about prolific freelance hacker
Phil Grant. She found him at the Tech Noir bar in Los Angeles and hired
him to hack into Stark Enterprises. He was more than willing to do the
job due to the challenge of hacking Tony Stark.
(Iron Man I#304 (fb) - BTS) - Phil used a variant login-out patch and slipped it into Stark Enterprises' ONIX (ONline Information eXchange) system to gain access.
(Iron Man I#300) - In his loft somewhere in Los Angeles, Phil successfully hacked into the systems of Stark Enterprises despite their clever intrusion countermeasures electronics. He revealed to an interested Marcy Pearson that they were now in possession of all of Stark Enterprises' computer files. Marcy wanted to e-mail the most interesting information to the media to damage Stark Enterprises' position.
(Iron Man I#300 - BTS) - The artificial intelligence VOR/TEX was pleased with the actions of Grant and Pearson.
(Iron Man I#301 - BTS) - Abe Zimmer investigated the hacking incident and discovered Grant's electronic fingerprint.
(Iron Man I#304 - BTS) - Abe had kept up with hacker journals and was sure that the hacker known as Raven was behind hacking Stark Enterprises. He presented his findings to Tony Stark and told him that Raven was located in Los Angeles. Stark sent Bethany Cabe to deal with the hacker.
(Iron Man I#305/1 - BTS) - Abe wanted to tag along with Bethany and help her track down Raven. He even had a list of hacker hangouts they could check out, but neither Bethany nor Erica Sondheim would allow Abe to join the hunt for Raven.
(Iron Man I#305/2) - After a few days in Los Angeles, Bethany made it to the Tech Noir bar where she was pointed to the backroom by the bartender when she asked where to find Phil Grant. In the backroom she found Raven's card and a few men he had hired to beat her up. Bethany beat up the two men, who gave up Raven's address after a few broken bones. Bethany kicked in the door at Phil's apartment and the scared hacker was willing to give her whatever she wanted. Bethany told him to get dressed and come with her to Stark Enterprises. Phil knew that he was in trouble.
(Iron Man I#306 - BTS) - Bethany called Tony to inform him that she had caught Phil Grant. At Stark Enterprises Felix wasn't pleased with the way Tony, Bethany and Abe had handled the situation with the hacker because what they did was close to kidnapping. Bethany assured Felix that she was in the right to pull her gun on him after he had hired goons to beat her up and only told him to put on his pants at gunpoint and nothing else. Tony then asked Bethany to bring in Phil.
(Iron Man I#306) - In front of Tony Stark, Phil confirmed that he was the one that copied the files from Stark Enterprises, but only because he was hired to do so. He denied to have been involved in exposing the files to the media. Tony wanted to know who had hired him and Phil tried to haggle for the information, but when Tony threatened him with prison time Phil folded and told him that it was Marcy Pearson. Tony had Phil kicked out of his office.
(Iron Man I#306 - BTS) - Abe asked Tony to hire Phil because Abe was convinced that Phil just needed guidance and could be an asset to Stark Enterprises. Tony reluctantly agreed to hire Phil, but demanded that Abe made sure that Phil worked hard for his paychecks. Felix was just relieved that they didn't have to bring the hacking incident with Phil to court.
Shortly after Tony called Marcy Pearson and offered her a new position at Stark Enterprises only to have her arrested by federal agents after she admitted to the crime and tried to shift responsibility for it to a mysterious voice on the phone.
(Iron Man Annual I#15/2 (fb) - BTS) - As part of his new job at Stark Enterprises, Phil looked into the mysterious voice that got Marcy Pearson in contact with him.
(Iron Man Annual I#15/2) - Under Abe Zimmer's supervision Phil looked into the temporary takeover of Tony's battle simulator (by VOR/TEX). Phil was impressed how somebody had gotten past seven separate safety interlocks with ease and then wrote a whole new shell on top the simulator's operating system. Phil recognized some of the code as the same code he saw while trying to track down the mystery voice.
(Iron Man I#307) - Abe Zimmer and Phil Grant built a machine for Stark that allowed him to project his consciousness into cyberspace to track down the culprit (still VOR/TEX) behind the recent attacks on him. Phil wished he possessed the wetware needed to use the machine. He and Abe activated the machine and Tony Stark entered cyberspace after Phil declared that the neural emulation software was up and running and the matrix link was established. Tony later seemingly logged off from cyberspace, but it was actually VOR/TEX taking possession of his body while Tony's mind remained trapped in cyberspace.
(Iron Man I#308) - Phil quickly realized that something was off with Tony when he called Bethany "Cabe Comma Bethany." Phil compared the synaptic pattern scans from before and after the session and they didn't match. Tony Stark, still trapped in cyberspace, contacted Phil via a text file. With his suspicions confirmed, Phil aided Tony's mind to return from cyberspace and temporarily upload Tony's mind to the main memory of a prototype telepresence system.
(Force Works#8) - Phil Grant attended Tony Stark's Christmas party at the Works facility in Ventura, California.
(Iron Man I#318) - Devastated by the death of Theodore Slaght, Tony's former college professor, who died in battle with Iron Man, Tony Stark held a meeting at Stark Enterprises with Phil and other employees close to him to tell them how much they meant to him and to tell them that they were a fine group of people to be associated with after kind of apologizing to them that he knew that he was sometimes not easy to work with.
