History:
(Marvel Team-Up I#30 (fb)) - Gloria Grant's cousin Râmon and his friends Eddie and Taki went to the Hot Spot, a disco in their area, for the first time. Everything looked all right until they were pulled by a bunch of henchmen to a back room where they were drugged by Midas, who wanted to get rid of people of color in the area, with a drug spray. Râmon's last thought was that he wanted to come see his cousin before he lost control due to the drug.
(Marvel Team-Up I#30 (fb) - BTS) - Midas seemingly armed Râmon with a gun, and his friends with sticks and then sent them out to cause trouble.
(Marvel Team-Up I#30) - Armed with a gun Râmon went with Eddie and Taki to Gloria and attacked her in the street in front of her building. Spider-Man, who lived in the same building, fought Eddie and Taki, but held back because he didn't want to hurt them. He quickly knocked them out after Râmon shot at him. Râmon was then knocked out from behind with a karate chop by Gloria.
Gloria asked Spider-Man to bring the three boys to her apartment and then told him that one of them was her cousin. When Râmon woke up again he attacked Gloria again, but Spider-Man webbed him up. Spider-Man realized that the boys had been drug when he looked at Râmon's eyes, but a short time later the drug's effect ended and Râmon got the chance to explain what had happened to him and his friends. Spider-Man left to deal with the villain while Gloria called Sam Wilson, who joined Spider-Man in his fight against Midas as the Falcon.
(Spider-Man '97 (fb) - BTS) - Years later Râmon was watching after Gloria's place for her while she was on vacation in the Caribbean. When she returned from her vacation she had been possessed by the spirit of the voodoo priestess Calypso. She injected Râmon with tetrodotoxin (puffer fish poison) to put him into a near death state and the antidote datura stramonium to revive him and make him her servant.
(Spider-Man '97) - Râmon attacked three unidentified Haitians, who were after the Calypso-possessed Gloria. They defended themselves with pipes and a baseball bat, but Spider-Man interfered. He was surprised when the men revealed that Râmon had attacked them first and even took a hit from Râmon himself. One of the Haitians shot at Râmon, but it only graced his head. The men fled to return later while Râmon was asleep and Spider-Man took the unconscious Râmon to the Ravencroft Institute where Dr. Ashley Kafka took care of him. Râmon was placed in a straightjacket and remained motionless in his padded cell. Kafka examined him and found the marks in his arm where he had been injected with an unknown drug though she had her suspicions.
(Spider-Man '97 - BTS) - At the Daily Bugle Gloria recognized Râmon in Peter's photographs and he took her to the Ravencroft Institute.
(Spider-Man '97) - Kafka took Gloria and Peter to Râmon. She told them that Râmon had probably been injected with puffer fish poison and datura stramonium and probably believed himself to be dead. When Gloria tried to talk to Râmon he seemed afraid of her to everyone's surprise.
Râmon, now without his straightjacket, crawled around in his padded cell while Spider-Man and Kafka talked about his condition and a real zombie Spider-Man had encountered earlier.
(Spider-Man '97 - BTS) - Under Calypso's control Gloria later returned and freed Râmon from Ravencroft to retrieve her own body, which had been buried by some of her followers at Cypress Hills Cemetery.
(Spider-Man '97) - While still in control of Gloria, Calypso had Râmon dig up her true body, but before she could transfer her soul back into her own body, the Zombie (Simon Garth) took the Amulet of Damballah, which she needed for the ritual, from her. Calypso sent Râmon to retrieve the Amulet from Simon Garth, but the Zombie was too powerful for Râmon, who was after all still alive and human. Garth eventually overpowered Râmon and tossed him aside with Râmon's head hitting a gravestone. Spider-Man then retrieved the Amulet of Damballah from the Zombie and handed it to the possessed Gloria, who was finally able to transfer Calypso's soul back to her own body.
(Spider-Man '97 - BTS) - Gloria felt guilty that she was responsible for Râmon's condition. (see comments)
Comments: Created by Gerry Conway, Jim Mooney & Vince Colletta.
Râmon's fate remains unrevealed. Did he actually die during the fight against Simon Garth, did he remain in a zombie-like state or was he fine after awhile?
Spider-Man:"--have we met before?" The answer is Yes, but Râmon was younger and looked like a completely different person the last time Spidey met him. I am not even sure Spider-Man actually recognized the poor sap, who seemed to always end up drugged and controlled by others.
Râmon originally had a sub-profile in Midas' profile, but as it turned out he had another appearance and after Gerry Conway's recent death I decided to expand Râmon's sub-profile in his memory.

Eddie and Taki Eddie and Taki were friends of Râmon and went to the Hot Spot disco with him where they were drugged by Midas, which led to them assaulting Gloria until being subdued by Spider-Man. The influence of the drug soon wore off and they seemed fine after that though they didn't know what had happened to them. --Marvel Team-Up I#30 |
