 History:

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#2 (fb) - BTS) <Two years before the main story> - Gordon married Joan, ex-wife of soldier of fortune Mark Hazzard.

gordon-148611-inbed(Mark Hazzard: Merc#2) - Gordon, a stockbroker, was treated to lunch by his client Henri Graymalkin. Between bites, he confessed to Graymalkin his frustrations with his stepson, Scott, and wife, Joan, whom he sensed compared him unfavorably with Mark Hazzard. During the conversation, he revealed that Mark would be attending Scott's Little League game that Sunday at Cunningham Park in Queens.

Mark did show up at the game, to Gordon's apparent consternation. Joan worried to herself that her still-existing attraction to Mark would be apparent to Gordon. Mark offered a handshake to Gordon and mockingly promised him that he would "be careful," insinuating that Gordon was afraid the physically more powerful man could hurt him in an alpha male display of dominance. Gordon and Mark's differing styles of parenting were on full display during the game, as Gordon consoled Scott when he failed to make a catch, while Mark chided him for lack of hand-to-eye coordination. Gordon attempted to convince Mark that positive reinforcement was the way to go with Scott, which Mark dismissed, emphasizing physical ability as a matter of survival. gordon-148611-shooting

Noticing a suspicious-looking character on the grounds, Mark got up to investigate, and wound up facing an attack by three killers dispatched by Graymalkin to assassinate him. The crowd panicked as shots were fired, and Gordon told Joan they had to get Scott, whom he incorrectly presumed must be terrified.

After Mark eliminated the first two killers, the third grabbed a teammate of Scott's and held a gun to his head, ordering Mark to drop his weapon and submit to execution, otherwise the child would die. Mark told him to go ahead and shoot, judging that allowing the man to kill Mark and walk away would be the worse outcome.

Outraged, Gordon declared Mark a monster. Fortunately for the boy, the killer was out of bullets, and Mark subsequently took him out. Joan then castigated Mark for his conduct at the game, accusing him of bullying Gordon among others, endangering everybody, and she demanded Mark leave them alone.

Graymalkin was informed of the failed hit, and mused that when Gordon told him in advance of Mark's plans to attend the game, he thought it would be a chance to catch Mark off guard. Later that night in bed, an insecure Gordon asked Joan how she really felt about Mark. She denied having any sort of feelings for him, but then mistakenly called Gordon "Mark" as she wished him goodnight.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#9 - BTS) - Gordon somehow discovered that Mark was headed for a mission which would have him flying near Iranian territory. Gordon tipped off Graymalkin, and Graymalkin in turn tipped off the Iranians, hoping for another shot at eliminating Mark.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#9 - BTS) - Mark's plane was shot down by the Iranians, he was captured, and his pilot was executed.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#10 - BTS) - Lincoln "Stryker" Griffin, the former Navy SEAL who sent Mark on the mission, learned of Mark's capture and grew suspicious of how easily the Iranians had located Mark. He asked his grandfather, known as "Gramps," to use his resources to look into it.

gordon-148611-strangled(Mark Hazzard: Merc#10 - BTS) - Gramps obtained information showing that Henri Graymalkin was responsible for alerting the Iranians to Mark's plans.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#11 - BTS) - After organizing and pulling off a daring rescue mission, Griffin gave Mark an envelope with instructions not to open it until he was on his way home. The envelope turned out to contain the revelation of Graymalkin's responsibility for Mark's capture.

Mark tracked Graymalkin down and infiltrated his heavily-fortified Long Island home, cornering him in his study just as Graymalkin was reading a report of Mark's escape. After dispatching Graymalkin's security and disarming Graymalkin with a well-placed shot, Mark demanded Graymalkin reveal who had informed him about the mission, or he would let him bleed to death. Graymalkin gave up the information, but not without one last attempt at killing Mark, which only resulted in his own demise.

(Mark Hazzard: Merc#11) - Armed with the knowledge that Gordon set him up to be killed, Mark proceeded to Gordon and Joan's home in Queens, where he found them sleeping in bed. He woke Gordon none too gently, and Gordon quickly confessed to trying to have Mark killed, both at the baseball game and in Iran, explaining he was motivated by jealousy. Gordon then pulled out a gun and fired at Mark, fatally wounding him, but not before Mark managed to get his hands around Gordon's neck and strangle him to death.
