History:

(Adventures into Terror I#31) - Captain Hoskins of the ship Pride of Charleston was carrying a ship full of slaves across the Atlantic Ocean to Charleston when a storm broke out. Hoskins was heedless of the danger to his crew, who were all slowly turning against him. When they came upon the English ship Samoa Star, Hoskins hailed the crew and offered to salvage their cargo. The crew of the Samoa Star pleaded with Hoskins to take them aboard his ship but Hoskins answered that salvage laws stated salvage awards could only be made for property, not for the lives of crew. Hoskins loaded up the cargo of the Samoa Star but even as his own crew pleaded with him to take the Samoa Star's crew with them, Hoskins refused. When the Samoa Star sank, Hoskins only opined that it was good he'd gotten another load off them when they did.

The Pride of Charleston continued on its course but the storm continued to worsen until it became a hurricane. With the additional cargo taken from the Samoa Star, the ship was riding lower in the water than usual and soon the ship began to flood. Hoskins' crew set free all the slaves from the hold. Hoskins ordered his crew to secure the "cargo" but they ignored him and began to abandon ship. The Pride of Charleston went down and Hoskins had to keep afloat by holding on to a barrel.

Another ship came to perform rescue operations and started helping Hoskins' crew, but when the rescue ship heard what Hoskins did to the crew of the Samoa Star, the rescue ship refused to help him out of the water. When the freed slaves were helped aboard the rescue ship, Hoskins demanded they rescue him but the ship's captain replied that slaves were "cargo" and therefore had market value -- but Hoskins wasn't "worth a dime." The waters Hoskins was in were shark-infested and he was abandoned in them by the rescue ship. As the sharks began to encircle Hoskins, Hoskins thought he saw the skeletal forms of the crew of the Samoa Star waiting for him under the water.
