History:

(Defenders I#99 (fb) - BTS) - The hell-lords Satan, Thog, Mephisto and Satannish learned that Doctor Strange's continued used of mystical teleportation spells was weakening the dimensional barriers. Figuring they could shatter the barrier between Hell and Earth, they crafted a plan to force Strange to keep using these spells. Mephisto, posing as the demon Maya, gathered five Hyppokri and four other lesser demons (Avarrish, Fashima, Puishannt and Unnthinnk) to his side. Maya tricked the demons into believing they would gain worlds to rule by banding together as the Six-Fingered Hand.

(Defenders I#99 (fb) - BTS) - 'Maya' made sure Hyppokri and the other demons were able to leave Hell to begin their various schemes on Earth.

(Defenders I#97 (fb) ) - Hyppokri figured the Hand's goals would be best served through unwitting pawns, thereby making it harder for his demonic influence to be noticed. He eventually discovered the devoutly religious David Kessler wandering the Israeli desert for twenty days hoping to have an epiphany. Hyppokri appeared before Kessler posing as an angelic figure, telling David he was filled with divine power and was destined to raise the world up from the dire state it's been in.

(Defenders I#97 (fb) - BTS) - Hyppokri secretly merged with Kessler, residing in his body and using his demonic energies to make David believe he now had divine powers. David found he could heal the sick and crippled, which led to him gathering a huge, cult like following among them Devil-Slayer's wife Cory Payne. Hyppokri watched Kessler's flock grow, waiting for the moment to lead them to the Hand.

(Defenders I#97 - BTS) - Devil-Slayer received a letter from his wife, telling him about the miracles David was performing in Israel. Sensing demonic influence, Devil-Slayer took the missive to the Defenders. Daimon Hellstrom's psycho-sensitive trident picked up the energies identified with the Six-Fingered Hand. This revelation set Devil-Slayer and the Defenders to teleport to Kessler's encampment in the Israeli desert.

(Defenders I#97) - Hyppokri watched from inside Kessler as the Defenders, looking like regular people through Strange's illusions, approached the oasis where David was baptizing the sick and injured. To prove his power, Kessler healed the crippled Nighthawk, which infuriated his fellow Defender Daimon Hellstrom who was convinced of Kessler's demonic origins. To show his sincerity, Kessler summoned the fires of truth, shocking himself when he revealed Gargoyle and Hellstrom's true forms. Hyppokri lent Kessler more of his power, allowing him to summon a band of angels (actually demons in disguise) to fight off the Defenders.

(Defenders I#97 - BTS) - Doctor Strange used his magics to reveal the true nature of the angelic warriors, sending the devout David into emotional turmoil.

(Defenders I#97) - Hyppokri was forced to take over David's body, revealing his presence inside the Messiah. He ranted and raved at the heroes for uncovering his plan to corrupt hundreds of thousands of believers and violently pushed Cory Payne aside when she tried to reason with David. This led Hyppokri to a fight with Devil-Slayer who he blasted away with a bolt of eldritch energy. Proudly bragging that after months inside Kessler, nothing short of his death could drive him out, Hyppokri prepared to deliver the killing blow. At the last moment, David Kessler briefly assumed control over his body and jumped on Devil-Slayer's dagger, instantly killing himself. Hyppokri and his demonic 'angles' were banished back to Hell.

(Defenders I#98 - BTS) - After Hyppokri was driven from the earthly plane, all of David Kessler's miracles were undone as well, leading to Nighthawk once again being paralyzed during the day.

(Defenders I#99 (fb) ) - Faking a mental summons by Doctor Strange, Hypokri and the others lured Clea, Hulk, Namor and the Silver Surfer to their realm where they were easily taken out and imprisoned.

(Defenders I#98) - Investigating the disappearance of Citrusville led the Defenders to Hell, where they were greeted by Maya, Hyppokri and the other members of the Six-Fingered Hand.

(Defenders I#99) - Hyppokri and the others cackled with glee as Doctor Strange futily tried to free Clea and his fellow Defenders. The demons explained that the heroes' life essence was linked to their mystic prisons, forcibly freeing them would prove lethal. The Six-Fingered Hand then took the heroes on a tour of Citrusville, its citizens transformed to monstrosities by the demonic influences around them. Outraged by the abominations, Hellstrom blasted Hyppokri and his fellow demons with hellfire, which led to a confrontation between the Hand and the Defenders. The inhabitants of Citrusville and groups of lower demons joined the fight, but the confrontation ended when Gargoyle freed Clea, Hulk, the Surfer and Namor. Using the power cosmic, the Silver Surfer destroyed the demonic hordes.

(Defenders I#99 - BTS) - Deciding the Hand had served its purpose, 'Maya' subtly reabsorbed the powers of Hyppokri and the other four demons.

(Defenders I#99) - The Defenders watched in astonishment as five of the Six-Fingered Hand quickly shrank to diminutive size, symbolizing their loss of power. Hyppokri and the others could do nothing but watch as Mephisto revealed himself to be Maya.

(Defenders I#100 (fb) - BTS) - Satan reminisced how he and the other hell lords manipulated Hyppokri and the others to do their bidding.

Comments: Created by J.M. DeMatteis, Don Perlin, Joe Sinnott

Hyppokri is a master of cunning and guile, which makes him one of the more dangerous of the Six-Fingered Hand. Like the poet Charles Baudelaire once said: "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist".

The name 'Hyppokri' sounds a lot like 'hypocrisy', just like other Hand-members Avarrish and Unnthink remind one of 'avarice' and 'ignorance'. While that makes the demonic grouping seem a little like DC's Seven Deadly Sins, creator J.M. DeMatteis stated in a 2013 interview that the Captain Marvel villains didn't cross his mind at all.

The big reveal of the Six-Fingered Hand at the end of Defenders I#98 has a coloring error: Hyppokri appears green, rather than his usual cadmium yellow.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Hyppokri should not be confused with

Hyppokri's army of archangels

Hyppokri commanded a small army of lower demons he mystically disguised to resemble (arch)angels. While hiding inside David Kessler, he allowed his human host to 'summon' the angels who appeared as golden hued, winged men with flaming swords. Doctor Strange's spell of revelation lifted that illusion. After Hyppokri had been driven out of Kessler's body, the army or archangels vanished instantly.
