on jackson's backneurosynaptic_leech_race.jpg"neurosynaptic leech" race

Classification: Semi-arthropodial extraterrestrial race (see comments)

Location/Base of Operations: Unrevealed (see comments)

Known Members: Unidentified mother figure, numerous unidentified spawn

Affiliations: Curtiss Jackson;
    possibly SHIELD (Dum Dum Dugan);
   possibly
possibly the other Maximum Security aliens (such as the imprisoned/incapacitated fin-headed being)
    those formerly influenced by the neurosynaptic mother figure and her leech spawn and controlled through them by Curtiss Jackson included the international assemblage of the heads of state, as well as the captains of industry, at the international technology summit, as well as Machete (Alfonso Lopez), Senator Leon Warkovsky and Kali Vries; USAgent (John Walker, aka Jack Daniels) was bonded to two separate spawn/leeches, but was protected from their powers by Farley Mowat.

EnemiesFarley Mowat, Namor the Sub-Mariner, STARSKali VriesSenator Leon Warkovsky;
    possibly SHIELD, possibly the other Maximum Security aliens (furry creature and insectoid)

First Appearance: (Spawn)  USAgent II#1 (August, 2001);
    (mother organism)
USAgent II#3 (October, 2001)

Powers/Abilities: The mother organism apparently was a symbiotic being that bonded to a host (such as a human) presumably to survive; such relationships typically involve the host providing nutrition and mobility.

    The mother organism was seen to bond the underside of her body to the back of a human. Forcibly separating that bond was apparently both painful and damaged the skin to which she was bonded.

    While bonded to a host, she could produce large amounts of offspring in an extremely rapid fashion. usa2-3-mini-bug

    The small, leech-like spawn could be placed on the back of another being's neck, and the host apparently did not feel the leech on his or her skin. The host bonded to the mother organism could mentally influence or even control that person via his connection to the mother organism. It was believed that the leech/spawn acted as satellite receivers for a larger, "mother" unit; the individual bugs didn't control their host but rather allowed their hosts to be controlled by the "mother" (who actually allowed her host to control those bonded to her spawn).
    While bonded to the mother organism, Jackson could influence up to hundreds of people bonded to the spawn/leech at once.
    The transmission of the signals between the host/mother figure and the spawn/leeches could be disrupted by technological means

    The mother organism could ambulate (walk) swiftly, but could be easily pinned under a human foot (or, at least the super-strong USAgent's foot).

    The mother organism appeared to have six limbs and a pair of antennae on each side (although some images showed only 4 limbs per side).

Traits: The mother organism and the spawn/leeches apparently only wished to achieve symbiotic bonding to hosts, and they seemed to be willing to serve the mother organism's host without any other agenda of their own.

History:neurosynaptic_leech_race-maxsecur.jpg

(USAgent II#3 (fb) - BTS / Maximum Security) - During the events of "Maximum Security" -- in which the Intergalactic Council sought to distract humanity by transferring alien criminals to Earth and making it an Intergalactic Penal Colony.

    Curtiss Jackson sought to employ some of these alien, and he determined where the highest concentration of alien landings would occur.

(USAgent II#3 (fb) - BTS / Maximum Security) - At that location, the neurosynaptic being apparently lost her human host when it was slain by some savage escaped inmates.

(USAgent II#3 (fb)) - After being nearly killed by a pair of savage inmates, Jackson encountered the neurosynaptic being, which he determined to be intelligent. Seeking a replacement so she could survive and breed, the neurosynaptic being accepted Jackson's offer to bond to him in exchange for using her powers to control others through its offspring; her neuro-synaptic leech offspring -- which she could secrete at an amazing rate -- granted mental control over others when placed on those beings' heads or necks. neurosynaptic_leech_race-maxsecur-closer.jpg

(USAgent II#1 (fb) - BTS) - Senator Warkowsky pressured STARS (Superhuman Tactical Activities Response Squad) to accept Kali Vries -- secretly a SHIELD double agent posing as an agent of Warkowsky -- as co-leader alongside then leader USAgent (John Walker).

    Machete (Alfonso Lopez) was sent to try to sell caseloads of the mind-controlling alien technology to Hydra. Machete was unwittingly implanted with one of the mind-control devices in his neck.

(USAgent II#1 - BTS) - USAgent captured Machete, but Vries allegedly accidentally fatally shot Machete as USAgent brought him back to a STARS shipt. STARS agent Farley Mowat found the"device" (neurosynaptic leech) in Machete's neck and identified it as presumably mind-control technology and possibly extraterrestrial.

(USAgent II#3 (fb) - BTS) - Suspecting Vries' corruption, Jackson had Mowat design a device to scramble the neuro-signal the bugs transmitted.

    Warkovsky instructed Vries to place one of the "devices" on USAgent, which she did.

(USAgent II#2 - BTS) - Poundcakes sold the "alien bugs" to the Atlantean Morcan, but SHIELD recovered the bugs, and an arriving Namor identified and removed the bug on USAgent's neck.

(USAgent II#2 (fb) - BTS) - Mowat identified a faint signal emanating from the mind control pods and suspected they were like satellite receivers for a larger, "mother" unit; the individual bugs didn't control their host but rather allowed their hosts to be controlled by the "mother."

    SHIELD pulled some strings with the Commission and arranged for the "bugs" to be gathered together, while they sent a courier to pick them up.

    Warkovsky instructed Vries to place another bug on USAgent. She spirited one from STARS' laboratory and hoped it woudn't be missed.

(USAgent II#2) - Vries placed another mind-control "bug" on USAgent.

     Informed of the nature of the bugs by STARS agent Allie MacGruder, USAgent (influenced to some degree by his own mind control bug) instructed MacGruder to have Mowat gather up all of the bugs and put them in a case for him so he could pick them up shortly. When she told him about SHIELD's arrangements, he instructed her not to release the package to SHIELD under any circumstances. usa3-bug-on-back-removed

    Warkovsky instructed Vries that USAgent was to bring back the mind-control leeches to his patron.

    Despite resistance from MacGruder and Mowat, USAgent prepared to take the bugs, stating he knew they weren't safe with SHIELD. After USAgent announced his plan to take them to Seattle and then departed, Captain America arrived and took Vries with him in a mission to recover the satchel containing the "bugs."

(USAgent II#3 (fb) - BTS) - Mowat "took care" of the bug on USAgent's neck, allowing it to lead him to its master, but not placing him under its master's control.

(USAgent II#2) - In Seattle, the USAgent arrived at Jackson' s location and demanded answers. Jackson told USAgent he wouldn't need any of the bugs he had brought, as they were just a test of his loyalty, and he already had in place a plan to infect those who were already attending the conference, an international assemblage of the heads of state, as well as the captains of industry.

(USAgent II#3 (fb) - BTS) - Jackson had a synaptic leech placed in every headset of every person attending the conference.

(USAgent II#3) - After Jackson assured Warkovsky that the USAgent was his puppet, he sent Warkovsky off to make his speech, observing with pleasure that his bug was still present on Warkovksy's neck and knowing he could control his speech. neurosynaptic_leech_race-underside.jpg

    During Warkovsky's speech, Jackson began to influence his speech, and USAgent rushed in to stop Warkovsky with Cap following closely on his heels. Jackson was confused, knowing he hadn't sent USAgent after Warkovsky, but then wondering if he hadn't picked up on his hostility towards Warkovsky and acted on it.

    Realizing he couldn't see clearly into USAgent's mind and appreciating his will was stronger than he had guessed, Jackson then prepared to use one of the bugs on Vries. But first, he revealed the origins and nature of the synaptic leeches, and he told Vries that once the foreign delegates returned to their homelands, his influence would be felt across the globe. He showed Vries the creature bonded to his back, living off of him; though she expressed her disgust, Jackson placed the leech on her and then returned his attentions to USAgent. neurosynaptic_leech_race-death.jpg

    Showing Cap the synaptic leech on Warkovsky, USAgent convinced him to trust him somewhat, after which he destroyed Warkovsky's bug. They exposed his alliance with Jackson to the reporters present.

   Via the neurosynaptic organsims, Jackson then directed the delegates to attack Cap and USAgent, and Cap held them off so USAgent could go after Jackson.

    Vries broke free and tried to attack Jackson, but he took control of her, and forced her to fight USAgent as he arrived; however, USAgent quickly subdued the dazed Vries and removed the bug from her neck.

    Jackson focused his mind to control USAgent, but USAgent punched him down and then used his shield to tear the alien bug mother from his back, leaving a large ulcerated region. As Jackson writhed in pain, the alien gave USAgent a headache as it tried to influence him.

    Despite learning Vries was secretly a SHIELD agent the whole time and "Dum Dum" Dugan's orders to turn over the alien mother to SHIELD, USAgent apparently destroyed it. He then told Dugan he suspected the creature wasn't an alien but rather a creature genetically engineered  by SHIELD to control the aliens banished to Earth during "Maximum Security."

    USAgent took Jackson into police custody.

Comments: Created by Jerry Ordway and Karl Kesel.

    USAgent seemed pretty certain the neurosynpatic leech was not actually part of an alien race but actually genetically engineered under the auspices of SHIELD to control the aliens banished to Earth during "Maximum Security."

    A pair of savage aliens apparently slew a group of investigating SHIELD agents.

(USAgent II#3 (fb)) - Arriving at that location, Jackson foolishly tried to communicate with a pair of inmates, who were seemed to be savage animals and attacked him.

    Realizing his blunder, Jackson offered his attackers no resistance, and they swiftly assumed him to be dead and discarded him with their other victims, a platoon of SHIELD agents.

-- USAgent II#3

    The one creature appeared to be mammalian, with fur, clawed talons on its hands and feet, and prominent sharp teeth, including nearly tusk-like lower canines.

    The other creature looked more insectoid or arthropodial, with multiple arms (it is hard to tell, but perhaps six arms) in addition to two legs, an armored carapace, and also sharp teeth.
