History: (Avenging Spider-Man#22 (fb) ) - Hoping to make himself a rich man and have some fun in the process, a young criminal bought Mysterio's identity, costume, and equipment (absent, since he had been trapped on Earth-1610) from the Hobgoblin.

(Avenging Spider-Man#22) - Dubbing himself "Mysterion" (either to distinguish himself from his predecessors or because he just got the name wrong), the criminal flooded a Krupt Bank branch with purple fog and chased off the patrons with illusory aliens, gorillas, and dinosaurs while he opened the vault. Unfamiliar with his equipment, however, he started choking on his own fog and became lost in it...only to stumble right into Spider-Man (Octavius), who attacked him, believing he was his treacherous ex-comrade Quentin Beck. Distracting the hero with a blast of gas from his gloves, Mysterion fled to the roof, where he tried to call the Hobgoblin. Before he could do so, Spider-Man snagged him with his webbing, but soon realized that Mysterion was an imposter and slashed him with his claws, injecting him with nano-tracers. Before he could question him further, a bullet shattered Mysterion's helmet - a rare miss from the lethal Punisher! Spider-Man knocked Mysterion aside as the Punisher opened fire from across the street; realizing who their assailant was, Mysterion used a cloud of mist as cover for a hasty escape. He sped towards the Hobgoblin's location atop his flying platform as the Punisher gave chase; he called Kingsley en route, telling him who was pursuing him. The Punisher soon outpaced him, but Spider-Man saved Mysterion at the last minute, then knocked him out and took him to his underwater lair, where he was held prisoner with Chameleon, Sandman, Vulture, and Electro.

(Superior Spider-Man Team-Up#1) - Mysterion remained Spider-Man's prisoner.

(Superior Spider-Man Team-Up#5) - Implanted with mind-control technology and clad in a new costume reflecting his leader's color scheme, Mysterion became part of Spider-Man's Superior Six, along with his fellow prisoners. When the Wrecking Crew assaulted Alchemax's corporate headquarters, seeking their experimental Quantum Particle Engine for their employer Lightmaster, Spider-Man led the Superior Six into battle against them, with rookie superheroine Sun Girl soon joining the fray. Mysterion terrified Piledriver with an illusory giant spider, allowing the Vulture to attack him. Before long, however, interference from Electro and Sun Girl's powers briefly freed Mysterion and the Six; Mysterion pleaded with Sandman to do something, but Spider-Man immediately reasserted his control. He took the Six and the Quantum Particle Engine back to his lair, where he re-imprisoned them.

(Superior Spider-Man Team-Up#6) - After using the Six to defeat a Hydra Dreadnought robot, Spider-Man brought them back to the underwater base, where Mysterion pleaded to be released. He sent them back into action against the Masters of Evil, who had been hired by the Lightmaster to battle the Six while he retrieved the Engine from Parker Industries, where Spider-Man had stashed it. Even with Sun Girl's aid, the Six were outmatched; Spider-Man had Mysterion conjure an illusory monster to frighten the Masters so he could reach Lightmaster. Before long, however, the Masters turned on the Lightmaster, and Spider-Man had Sun Girl activate the Engine with her powers. The resulting energy blast permanently freed Mysterion and the Six from Spider-Man's control, and teleported in a massive amount of sand, which the Sandman incorporated into his body to lead the Six against their former master...

(Superior Spider-Man Team-Up#7) - With Spider-Man defeated and Sun Girl presumed dead, Mysterion watched as Chameleon tortured him; Mysterion exhorted him to kill the web-slinger before they could be put back under his control, but Chameleon assured him that his hold over them was permanently broken. He was horrified when the Vulture seemingly killed Lightmaster, and was apprehensive about the others' plan to kill numerous innocents to make Spider-Man pay. Soon, however, a living Sun Girl returned with Lightmaster, and attacked Mysterion; when she saw Spider-Man was in trouble, she offered the villain the opportunity to flee, and he gladly took it.

(Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe!#1 (fb) ) - At some point, Deadpool loaned Mysterion twenty dollars, which he did not pay back.

(Unbeatable Squirrel Girl I#5) - Mysterion attacked the Statue of Liberty with robotic dinosaurs, prompting a small army of super heroes to come to the statue's defense. His dinosaurs were defeated, and he was arrested.

(Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe!#1) - While robbing a bank, Mysterion was attacked by the Duplicate Squirrel Girl as part of her campaign to rid the Earth of superhumans; Mysterion surrounded himself with holographic duplicates, but DSG could see in the ultraviolet spectrum, and easily swarmed the real Mysterion with squirrels. She stole his holographic projectors, then sent him to the Negative Zone. He and the rest of the superhumans were eventually rescued by the real Squirrel Girl, and assisted her in defeating her duplicate.

Nature abhors a vacuum, and until Mysterio finds his way back from the Ultimate Universe (as he may have done in Spider-Man/Deadpool), this guy will keep showing up whenever someone needs to fight a bubble-domed illusionist.
