Powers/Abilities: Shelob possessed superhuman reflexes and speed. She was able to project webbing from her mouth, strong enough to bind most humans. Her poison paralyze her victims and enzymes in her adrenal fluid liquefied their insides, including bones. She consumed her victims' liquefied insides and wore their skin to pose as a human. When not posing as human she still hid her true spider form through magic, appearing as a humanoid being with six arms and two legs. Her true form was that of a human-sized spider. Shelob possessed some ancient magic knowledge, which often counteracted the mysticism of current religions and believe systems. Due to that she was mostly immune to beings empowered or tapping into the vast energies of the Judeo-Christian god. She could not be destroyed by Hellfire, but several blasts could injure her. She had a weakness against cold iron and running water.

Like most spiders she laid several thousand eggs at once in one of her victims (she chose strong mystical beings for this purpose). When the eggs hatched they could feast on the body.

After she had been dropped into running water (in Spirits of Vengeance#11) she had developed a knack to speak of herself in third person or plural. It is unknown if this was due to a trauma as a result of the running water incident or not.

History:

(Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance#11 (fb) - BTS) - Shelob was an ancient evil that had slumbered for centuries.

(Marvel Encyclopedia Vol.5: Marvel Knights - Shelob entry) - Shelob was woken up by Lilith and the Lilin.

(Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance#11 (fb) - BTS) - Ghost Rider encountered Shelob, but the demon, who wanted to devour Ghost Rider despite fearing his powers, escaped him. Ghost Rider's Hellfire could not destroy her.

(Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance#11) - At a motel in Elizabeth, New Jersey Shelob, dressed in one of her female skins, broke into Johnny Blaze's room in the night and approached him. He heard her whispering his name in the dark, then shed her skin, to reveal her true spider-form. Blaze shot the creature with his Hellfire shotgun, which drove Shelob away. Shelob quickly put on her male trucker skin and returned to her truck. Not recognizing the trucker was the same creature, Blaze asked him if his female visitor was a friend of the trucker. The trucker stayed silent and attempted to run over Blaze, who tried to shoot the trucker through the front window before jumping out of the way. Shelob ran over Blaze's bike and fled. Blaze used his Hellfire shotgun to reassemble to bike and began to hunt down the trucker. On the way he encountered Ghost Rider, who was after Shelob as well.

(Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance#11 - BTS) - After her encounter with two such powerful beings Shelob decided to use Blaze to lay thousands of eggs into his body, so her children would have a nice, strong breakfast when they hatched.

(Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance#11) - Shelob really wanted Blaze and his power, but needed to trick him somehow. She drove up to a hooker, pulled her into her sixteen wheeler's driver's cab and had a quick meal, leaving nothing but the hooker's skin to wear it.

(Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance#11 - BTS) - Wearing the hooker's skin as a suit Shelob entered a diner at the port of Elizabeth, New Jersey and killed everyone inside. She webbed up a waitress and steeped her in adrenal fluids for later.

(Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance#11) - A short time later Blaze, who had been following a trail of poison Shelob had left on the street, arrived at the diner but the sixteen wheeler he found was empty. He entered the diner and met Shelob, stil wearing her new skinsuit. Pretending to be a helpless woman she told Blaze that the truck driver had taken away everyone else. Shelob embraced Blaze, but he quickly realized who she actually was when he saw the spider's shadow on the wall. He shot Shelob, destroying her newest skinsuit, forcing Shelob to web up Blaze and take another quick snack, the waitress, drinkig her liquefied insides before putting on the waitress' skin as a new suit. Blaze freed himself from Shelob's web with the Hellfire shotgun, but failed to hit Shelob, who ducked a shot at her. Shelob jumped through the window, fleeing the diner and taking her truck to escape. Blaze followed her on his bike and shot the truck's trailer a few times. Many of Shelob's skinsuits dropped from the trailer. Driving up to the sixteen wheelers' driver's cab Shelob took her chance and pulled Blaze off the bike with her web, then disarmed him. The truck headed for the Goethals Channel Bridge and Shelob was going to feed on Blaze when Ghost Rider arrived on the scene and tossed Blaze's Hellfire shotgun back to Blaze. Blaze shot Shelob and she broke through the driver's cab, calling Blaze and Ghost Rider fools for fighting her on this bridge, a web made of steel. The sixteen wheeler went over the bridge's side and Shelob caught Blaze with another web-strand. Ghost Rider used his chain to pull Shelob down from a steel shore and told Shelob that she had made a mistake because she had entered a place made of cold iron above running water. Blaze shot Shelob's web-strand to free himself once again and then, with Ghost Rider still holding on to Shelob with his chain, shot Shelob a few times with Hellfire until Shelob dropped into the river below. Shelob sunk within seconds and was seemingly gone. Blaze wondered why she didn't just pump him full of venom and Ghost Rider surmised that she probably wanted to lay her eggs in Blaze, then eat his head for dessert and hide his carcass, until her children hatched and ate the rest.

(Blaze II#10 (fb) - BTS) - Shelob allied herself with the vampires Undead MC.

(Blaze II#10) - Charnel ordered the other Undead MC to push Uri-El's sarcophagus to Shelob's cave so she could guard him and prevent Uri-El from escaping it. Roadkill was a bit afraid to get eaten by her and Shelob told him she just might even though she preferred her food a bit more fresh. Hairball, Roadkill and Blivet ran away as soon as Shelob had grabbed the sarcophagus and pulled it in to her cave.

Shelob was afraid of Uri-El, but also loved the power within him, because it would draw Blaze to her for her sweet revenge on him. She pushed the sarcophagus away a bit and a bit of light escaped it. Shelob immediately pushed down the sarcophagus' lid again to prevent Uri-El's escape. She planned to lay her eggs into Blaze's rotting corpse after doing her mating dance with him. (Eww?)

(Blaze II#11) - Shelob wasn't happy when Charnel had the Undead MC move Uri-El's sarcophagus to a more tactically advantageous location because she needed Uri-El's sarcophagus to lure Blaze to her. Charnel promised Shelob that she could have Blaze as soon as Blaze had destroyed Uri-El for them. While moving the sarcophagus Blivet accidentally moved the chains around the sarcophagus, releasing Uri-El in the process. Shelob turned into her spider-form and webbed Uri-El up. Dolores and Joy then pushed Uri-El back into the sarcophagus and Shelob remade the seal to lock the sarcophagus once again.

Shelob witnessed the arrival of Blaze and his allies.

(Blaze II#12 - BTS) - Shelob moved out of the way while the Undead MC fought Blaze and the Punisher. At the New Jersey Turnpike overpass members of the Quentin Carnival (Yang Kwei Fei, Kody, Lobster Lad, Princess Python, Roach, Wolf) ran into Shelob. Madame Yang Kwei Fei quickly used her magic to subdue Shelob by shrinking her down and putting her in a jar.

(Blaze II#12) - Madame Yang Kwei Fei arrived with the other carnies at the cemetery near the New Jersey Turnpike in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Kody told Blaze about their encounter with Shelob and Lobster Lad showed Shelob, trapped in a jar, to Blaze. Shelob talked about her error to think that her ancient magic was unique and insurmountable.

Poor, little spider demon in a jar! Knowing how Madame Yang Kwei Fei operates Shelob is probably still in her possession.

Shelob was named after the giant spider from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings: Two Towers (1954).
