xcron-chiller-highatmosPowers/Abilities: Xcron could possess human forms, imbuing them with superhuman strength (sufficient to rip an adult man's arm off or throw an adult male into a second floor fire escape across the street. Such hosts were minimally affected by trauma such as being shot.

It could animate and control dismembered limbs, granting a single arm the power to pull an adult man against his well across the ground.

It could perform various spells, enabling it to sense and/or track the magics of others.

Xcron had superhuman strength as well as sharp claws and teeth. It enjoyed mutilating and devouring people

It did not sleep and it could go almost forever without food, but it did feel the need to enjoy itself, especially after having been trapped in an urn for over two centuries.

It likely did not need to breathe and was presumably highly resistant to temperature extremes as well as conventional forms of injury.

It was vulnerable to magic, but most assaults would only briefly delay it; more powerful assaults, such as those drawing on the pattern of a city-wide pentagram or powered by multiple human sacrifices were required to contain or force its compliance.

Xcron could fly high into the air to observe the people below, even reaching high into the atmosphere to survey the planet.

It could apparently read the mind of those in its proximity, allowing it to mimic the voice of someone known to that person despite Xcron having never heard that person speak.

It hungered for the experiences he had lost the last couple of centuries while trapped in the urn.

Height: Unrevealed (approximately 8')
Weight: Unrevealed (estimation is not possible without knowing his body construction; at a human density, it might weigh 235 lbs.)
Eyes: Solid red
Hair: None
Skin: Black (sometimes appeared brown or dark gray; presumably variable)
Other Distinguishing Features: Xcron had three fingers and an opposing thumb on each hand. Its body condition was gaunt, with dark, nearly black coarse hide stretched over its skeleton.

Its glowing red eyes bulged from atop its skull.

It had no visible external nose or ears, and it had pointed projections from its mouth, rather than obviously distinct teeth.

History:xcron-chiller-summoned18th

(Chiller#1 (fb) - BTS) - Xcron was an intelligent demonic being from another dimension.

(Chiller#1 (fb) - BTS) - Aldo Roth of the Architects -- a secret society allegedly dating back to ancient Babylon -- sacrificed numerous African slaves to master the skills needed to summon and control demons, writing his secrets and rituals in a book via the blood of his victims.

(Chiller#1 (fb) - BTS / Chiller#2 (fb) - BTS) <In the latter half of the 18th Century A.D.> - Roth's old comrades James Madison introduced him to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, whom he convinced to allow him to use his talents to help their cause (the Revolutionary Army) against the British.

(Chiller#2 (fb) - BTS) - Roth began by having his assistants kill some of the slaves he had recently purchased for this purpose. His assistants then used the blood to paint a pentagram trap that would draw the Shadower (Xcron) to their world. Roth directed them while he began to chant the invocation of power.

(Chiller#2 (fb)) - After many hours, Roth and his assistants brought the demon through the darkness that separated their realities. Xcron immediately tested the magical bonds they had set around it, but the bonds ultimately held.

Xcron helped the Revolutionary Army defeat the British.

(Chiller#2 (fb) - BTS) - At some point thereafter, Roth and the Architects established a pentagram around Washington DC to be used for black magic purposes, giving them a much larger pattern from which to draw energy.xcron-chiller-warningxcron-chiller-urn

(Chiller#2 (fb) - BTS) - Objecting to the Architects' ultimate plans, some of the founding fathers had Roth slain.

(Chiller#1 (fb) - BTS) - Realizing that Xcron was too powerful for them to control, the founding fathers trapped the demon within a large urn in the center of a pentagram in an underground chamber, the door to which was labeled "Death Lies Within" (and showing a pentagram) in Mt. Vernon, Virgina. They buried Roth's tome in a suburb of Washington, DC.

(Chiller#1) - Construction workers, including Brent, Steve and Pete, unearthed and investigated the underground foundation containing the trapped Xcron. After Steve noted that his daughter, Amy, would love this kind of thing, the group ignored the warning and broke into the inner room.

Xcron then called out in Amy's voice, telling Steve that a bad man had put her in there.

.
.
xcron-chiller-freedDespite his co-workers' arguments that the place had been buried for years and suggestions that they should get the police, Steve pried off the lid to the urn, freeing the demon within. As the men turned and fled, Xcron tore off Steve's arms and sent them to bring Brent and Pete back down to his chamber, where the demon devoured them.

Flying through the air, Xcron descended into an alley in the city where he possessed a homeless man. Walking the streets, Xcron's host was was threatened by a group of men, but he tore the leader's right arm off, knocked two of the men down with the arm, hurled the dismembered man into a fire escape above and then laughed off the bullets from the remaining members before he slew them as well.

(Chiller#1 (fb) - BTS) - Following the massacre, the police cornered the suspect in a building and began searching door-to-door.

(Chiller#1 - BTS) - Finding partially devoured/dismembered human corpses in the hallway, the police followed the sound of a scream to a room and kicked down a door to an apartment and found the killer's corpse on the floor. Appreciating that the man was dead with dried blood around his gunshot wound, the police questioned the resident, and she told them that he was no man but rather the devil. Ramone, the Alpha leader, reported that that suspect was dead and that it was situation normal.

(Chiller#1) - As Ramone subsequently used the bathroom, Xcron possessed him and then forced him to open fire on and kill the rest of his squadron.

(Chiller#1 (fb) - BTS) - Xcron apparently had Ramone kill himself.xcron-chiller-slaughter-arch

(Chiller#1 - BTS) - Meanwhile, the Architects' Alex Nash employed the magician Brian Marx to capture the demon.

Seeking further information, Marx apparently communicated with the spirit of Benjamin Franklin who warned him that the "Shadowerer" would not rest until it was sated, which would take at least another 100 years. Franklin further warned Marx that the Architects wanted to use the demon's power to solidify their control over Earth and that the first step in thwarting the Architects and the Shadower would be to seek out Aldo Roth's last living descendant and awaken this person's racial memories so he could ask Roth what he needed to know.

The Architects manipulated federal agents, who shut down further investigations, noting a national security matter.

(Chiller#1) - Floating above the city, Xcron watched its creatures scurry about. Having enjoyed the slaughter, it nonetheless had become bored and sought new games and experiences. It became intrigued with the possibilities in the radically different world from when it had been imprisoned.

As reporter Tracy King argued with her boss about a cover story she was supposed to use for the events, Xcron telekinetically lifted a van into the air and launched it into the crowd, killing others.

(Chiller#1 - BTS) - Presumably informed by Benjamin that Tracy was Roth's descendant, Brian Marx convinced her to come with him as he knew what was really going on, after which he brought her to his room and made her envision her ancestor's involvement.

(Chiller#1) - Xcron possessed a federal agent and apparently killed Dave (one of Tracy's co-workers).

(Chiller#1 - BTS) - Tracy told Marx what she recalled of Roth's history, and when Marx asked the demon's name as that might give them some power over it, she revealed the demon's name as "Xcron."

(Chiller#1) - However, speaking the demon's name summoned it to their side, and Xcron -- having appreciated that the one who had originally summoned him to Earth was still alive -- advised them that to summon it without the right prospective spells was essentually suicide, although he enjoyed considering how long he could make their suffering last.

(Chiller#2) - Realizing that neither of the two was the one who had summoned him to Earth, Xcron ignored Marx's efforts to negotiate with it, but then Aldo Roth took over Tracy's form and cast a teleportation spell, sending him/Tracy and Marx to Washington DC, in the vicinity of the Washington Monument.

(Chiller#2 - BTS) - Agents affilitated with the Architects had the press reveal that the previous attackers were caused by a white supremacist terrorist group known as America First.

(Chiller#2) - Casting a spell, Xcron began tracking Marx and Tracy/Roth who were making their way to the building in which Roth's tome had been buried. As they explored the building, Xcron arrived at the location to which they had teleported. As they unearthed the book, Xcron arrived, having tracked Roth's magic, and slaughtered the house's residents, dropping a number of disembodied heads down the stairs.

When Xcron confronted them, Marx again futilely tried to negotiate with the demon and then cast a binding spell that only held it for seconds. Marx next caused a knight of clubs card to enlarge and attack Xcron with its arms and sword, but Xcron swiftly incapacitated the king. Before Xcron could attack them, however, Marx teleported them away to the Lincoln Monument.

(Chiller#2 - BTS) - Although the spell caused Roth's mind to recede, Tracy recalled that they were within the pentagram established around the center of DC. Marx then transported himself and Tracy to Paris, France, where they were protected from Xcron's discovery within another pentagram (the Great Parisian Pentagle) and where Marx reviewed the tome, learned the Architects' plans and made his own plans to thwart both the Architects and Xcron.

(Chiller#2) - Floating on the edge of the atmosphere, Xcron was frustrated by its inability to detect the location of Marx (to whom it referred as the Realsmith), whom it realized posed a danger to it and must be destroyed. Nonetheless, it considered that Marx would show himself eventually, after which the fun would begin. Despite continued waiting, it sensed that dramatic things were about to happen.

After Marx transported himself and Tracy back to Washington DC and gave her a lucky die to protect her, Xcron spotted their magic flux amid the strange pulsing site below (DC's pentagram) a few miles away from where it had lost them. As Xcron rapidly descended to confront them, Marx facilitated Aldo Roth's return to prominence in Tracy's body. Meanwhile, the pair were spotted by Architect agents, and the Architects prepared to confront them as well.

As the Architects held Marx at gunpoint, noting that they were directly above their base, Xcron arrived and slaughtered the Architects agents, proclaiming that the descendants of those who had brought it to this world must die horribly. However, Roth then tapped in the power of the DC pentagram, of which they were at the center, and bound Xcron. Roth then mystically incapacitated Marx as well.xcron-chiller-processor
xcron-chiller-explosion
(Chiller#2 (fb) - BTS) - Xcron and Marx were taken into the Architect's subterranean base. Xcron was bound to the giant brain-like Processor, a biologic computer created with a mixture of science and sorcery, which the Architects planned to use to more efficiently control Earth's population via Xcron's power.

Wishing to ultimately use him as a new host (as he could not tolerate being in the body of a black woman), Roth had Marx stripped to his underwear and handcuffed, making certain that he had no other items that he could use to facilitate his magic nor could perform any mystic gestures; Roth further placed an enchantment on Marx to prevent him from trying any magic.

(Chiller#2) - Considering Marx to be helpless, Roth and Nash showed him the Processor, to which Xcron was bound.

Via the die he had given to Tracy, Marx then negated Roth's personality and any magic that he had worked, freeing Xcron. As Xcron used the Processor to attack the Architects, Marx teleported himself and Tracy away and then remotely set off the magic items he had brought with him to the base, causing a mystic spell to vaporize the base, apparently slaying Xcron and the Architects' leaders and leaving an immense hole in the center of Washington, DC.

Comments: Created by James Hudnall and John Ridgway.

The early US government conspiracy in this story doesn't strike me as that much different than other stories I've read in various mainstream titles. While creator-owned Epic titles are not automatically Reality-626, I don't think there's anything that specifically excludes this story. An explosion under Washington DC that vaporized a small portion of the city including some underground bunker occurring in 1993, well before the modern era is not that big a stretch to me. I'm not giving it an alternate reality designation, and it can be considered fringe material for now, until/unless some Reality-616 story references the story, characters, etc.

Aldo Roth's descendant was called Tracy King at least twice in the first issue, but in the second issue, she was called Tracy Madrid consistently. Not sure what was up with that.
No-Prize: Her name is Tracy King. Not only does the newsreader call her that, but she signs off her report with that surname and confirms it is her name when asked by Marx. Madrid is an error - she's only called that by the newsreader, who simply misspoke, and then one of the conspiracy's agents, who presumably got the surname from that same erroneous report.
