ÜBERMAUS
Real Name: Presumably some test subject
identification
Identity/Class: Alternate Reality (Earth-85735)
murine mutate
Occupation: Predator, forager;
former test subject
Group Membership:None
Affiliations: Formerly Josef
Mangele;
indirectly Vera Pavlova, Comrade Bog and the Russians
for being the test subject for the formula that empowered Comrade Bog
Enemies: Josef Mangele,
unidentified members of a delegation of German
military and Nazi party officials
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
last scene around Washington, DC, USA, Earth-85735
First Appearance: The One#1
(July, 1985)
Powers/Abilities: Übermaus is gigantic, immensely
strong and highly durable (even while only doubled in size, his skin proved impenetrable to further injections or any other
means of breaching such as bullets or shrapnel).
Possessing an immense appetite, he
could readily devour large numbers of people, wiping out a military
group and the entire population of a small town.
While most mice live for 12-18 months,
Übermaus survived for 40 years in the ocean
Height: Unrevealed (immense; one of the most recent
images show him as being shoulder height-comparable to the 555' tall
Washington Monument (and another showed him to be closer in height to the
289' tall Capitol building))
Weight: Unrevealed (approximately 146,000 to 1,038,545 tons; see comments)
Eyes: Dark brown
Hair: Brown
History:
|

(The One#2 (fb) - BTS) -
German Nazi nutritionist Josef Mangele concocted a serum of human
pineal gland secretions (see
comments) taken from half a million condemned inmates at
Auschwitz and Dachau.

(The One#1 (fb) - BTS/ The One#2 (fb)) <1945> - Mangele injected the serum into an ordinary laboratory
mouse who subsequently became known to him and his staff as
Übermaus.
The results were astounding, as not only did
Übermaus' size and mass double within the first day but his skin
proved impenetrable to further injections or any other means of
breaching such as bullets or shrapnel. |
(The
One#2 (fb) - BTS) -To sustain
the runaway growth in his cell structure, Übermaus was devouring six times
his own body weight every day. As he grew larger and larger, this
apparently caused problems for Dr. Mangele and his team.
Given Germany's long fascination with myths and the
idea of the super race, Dr. Mangele's research was not lost on the German
high command, who, this late in the war were faced with imminent invasion
of their homeland.
(The One#2 (fb))
- On January 10, 1945, a high ranking delegation of
military and Nazi party officials arrived at Mangele's lab in the city of
Zutgart on Germany's north coast to view a demonstration of the Übermaus.
(The One#2 (fb)
- BTS) - Somehow, Übermaus' handlers lost control of their prize.
All of the delegation, along with
Dr. Mangele were soon dead, devoured in a horrible feeding frenzy. By the
next day, Zutgart and most of its inhabitants had disappeared from the
face of the Earth.
(The One#2 (fb)
- BTS) - Footage of Zutgart from January 12th showed a swath of
destruction, as if a gigantic bulldozer had cut through the heart of the
city.
(The One#2 (fb))
- Growing at a fantastic rate and impervious to everything the Germans
could throw at him, Übermaus finally slid into the
North Sea where he was presumed to have drowned.
(The One#2 (fb) - BTS) - After the Russian army overran Zutgart, Mangele's papers and
photo documents were relegated to a Moscow warehouse.
At some point, Verochtka Pavlova
unearthed evidence of Übermaus and pieced together research and documents.
She convinced Premier Mikhail Kubalov of the value of the serum, and he
obtained the needed pineal gland secretions from their gulag system,
ordered the serum to be manufactured, and injected it into a
carefully-screened candidate who became known as Comrade Bog (after an
ancient word for God). Bog was kept ignorant of the history of the
experiment that empowered him, and dietary restrictions were used to
prevent him from growing too large and powerful.
(The One#1 - BTS) - Vera Pavlova
showed a picture of Übermaus and Mangele in preparation of relating his
story.
(The One#2 - BTS) - Vera related
Übermaus' origins, and Premier Kubalov detailed how the process was used
to empower Comrade Bog.
(The One#6 (fb) - BTS) - Having
survived in the Atlantic Ocean for four decades, recent earthquakes drove
Übermaus back to land, and he began laying waste in Washington, D.C.
(The One#6 - BTS) - Vera Pavlova
reported Übermaus' return as the USSR's saving grace following the defeat
of Comrade Bog.
(The One#6) - The POTUS'
advisors noted that Soviets must have sent the giant mouse, as who else
could have created such a creature (besides the USA, of course).
With nothing short of a nuclear weapon sufficient to
destroy the creature, the POTUS prepared to depart for Camp David and
leave his advisors behind to die "heroically." However, as he paused to
watch footage of the super-heroic Charles and Amelia's sex, the pair
returned, caught him viewing the footage, and they threw him through the
satellite that was transmitting the footage.
The One? informed Charles and Amelia -- apparently the
last surviving people on Earth not enslaved by the Other -- that Übermaus
would not last long, as he was very old and the chemical process that
created him had wreaked havoc on his metabolism. The One advised they just
leave Übermaus alone to graze and clean up the mess for them, as he might
live another year.

Übermaus may be my
new favorite character. I would love to see him in another story, but as
he is creator-owned from from a different reality in the Marvel
Megaverse.
Übermaus' history in The One#2
notes Übermaus to have been empowered by a serum from pineal gland
excretions. The pineal gland secretes directly into the bloodstream and
does not excrete anything.
Size and mass of Übermaus
Half-ass
internet research gives me these stats for a mouse's size and weight:
3-4" long,
2-4" long in the tail
1.2-2" at the shoulder
0.4-0.9 oz. in weight
Übermaus
appeared to be as tall at the shoulder as the Washington Monument, which
is 555' tall, or 6660 inches tall, which would make him 3330x the size of
a mouse 2" tall at the shoulder. The cube of 3330 is 36,926,037,000, so
his weight should be that much greater than that same mouse, which would
be about 0.9 oz or .056 pounds. So, about 2,077,089,581 pounds, or about
1,038,545 tons...assuming his mass was not greater due to increased
density/durability.
Another image showed him maybe a little taller than the
US capitol building, which is 289 feet, which would make him more like
146,000 tons...
Übermaus should correctly have the
unlaut over the "U," but it will create an unreadable character and an
error in the profile when I post it, so I have left it out. If someone
else wants to edit the profile to reflect that, that is fine by me.
Josef Mangele was almost certainly
inspired by infamous Nazi researcher Josef Mengele.
This profile was
completed 02/25/2025, but its publication was delayed as it was intended
for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
Thanks to Loki for recommending
Übermaus from The One series, and to Loki, David Zuckerman & Mike
Castle for most of the clarifications!
