well as being skilled with computer technology/software.
History:
(T2: Nuclear Twilight#1 (fb) - BTS) - Good with computers,
Samuels nearly became a computer technician, but he preferred working out
in the field.
(T2: Nuclear Twilight#1 (fb) - BTS) - Samuels,
nicknamed Sammy, was a member of the Human Resistance opposing the
Artificial Intelligence Skynet in the apocalyptic future following (and
possibly before) its "Judgment Day" nuclear assault against humanity,
which occurred in 1997.
(T2: Nuclear Twilight#1 (fb)) - Alongside Sarah and
the teenage John Connor, Sammy protected a group of civilians and
destroyed a pair of Terminators.
(T2: Nuclear Twilight#1) <Circa 2029 A.D.> -
Years later, Sammy continued to serve in the Resistance. After seeing John
depart from the room of Danny Dyson, Sammy was suspicious of Danny's
activities, as it was his father, Miles Dyson, who had created Skynet.
Despite advice to the contrary from his friend Griff,
Sammy went into Danny's room, and Griff followed. Checking out Danny's
computer, they discovered the head of one of the Terminators, and Sammy
concluded that Dyson was trying to recreate Skynet.
(T2: Nuclear Twilight#2) - Griff argued that Danny
wouldn't do something like that. Regardless, knowing that they shouldn't
have been in that room in the first place, Griff convinced Sammy to keep
silent about what they had found.
Both men were called to the ready room by Colonel
Mossberg as they were late for a mission meeting. Both men's distractions
led to reprimands from Colonel Mossberg, which got their attention.
Unable to tell the troops the nature of the mission, John Connor told them
that he needed them to trust him, and he instructed them to capture an
intact and functional endoskeleton (T-800/Terminator robot). He advised
them of how a recent power dip from Skynet had caused a T-800 to
temporarily deactivate, but that it had reactivated before its power
source could be severed.
Upon learning that Reese was on the mission, John -- knowing Reese was his father and needing to prevent him from being killed so he could go back in time and father him -- had Mossberg taken Reese off the mission without any explanation.
Sammy and Griff subsequently rode in the back of a vehicle on their mission, unaware that Reese had gone around orders and had convinced the intended driver, Pulve, to allow him to drive instead.
Having spotted a frozen endoskeleton over a rubble
hill, Reese stopped the vehicle, revealed his presence, and led the group
to capture the T-800 unit. As they worked to disable it, Sammy could no
longer contain what he had found in Dyson's room, and he began to shout
that none of what they were doing meant anything and that there might not
be a resistance to go back when they were done.
As Griff tried to shut up Sammy, however, a trio of
skynet planes appeared above them and began firing, shooting and killing
Sammy and most of the others. Reese and Griff were wounded, and then the
T-800 reactivated...
Danny
Dyson was figuring out how to create a chip that could be used to
reprogram a Terminator, thus creating the bodyguard Terminator of the
second movie.
Terminator (1) goes bootstrap paradox - the time travelers apparently do not create a new timeline but instead ensure the one they came from. If Reece hadn't gone back in time, there would have been no John Connor for the Terminator to be sent back to kill.
Terminator 2 is deliberately ambivalent on this front - bootstrap in terms
of the original Terminator's remains being examined is the only reason
Skynet and its Terminators are able to be developed. On the other hand
they end with uncertainty as to whether or not they have averted Judgment
Day - if only the Terminator had brought back a polaroid of the future to
check, a la Back to the Future.
Judgment Day is mentioned to take place in 1997.
Terminator 3 suggests that the future IS set, as they had failed to avert Judgment Day. Sarah has died from cancer, and Judgment Day happens on the predicted day in 1997.
Terminator Salvation (4) is set after Judgment Day, there's no time travel and nothing to prevent this fitting with the above three.
So up to this point it might be argued that the time travel doesn't change the timeline. The Dark Horse comics were working only with original movie info, at least to begin with, and have some discrepancies with info from T2, but perhaps not so much they couldn't be worked round. Malibu worked with info from T1 and T2, and can't fit with T3, as Sarah is alive post-Judgment Day.
Initially set shortly after T2, Sarah Connor Chronicles starts with the timeline being altered, as a new bodyguard Terminator helps Sarah and John time jump about a decade to the late 2000s; Sarah learns of her future cancer (so confirming that her T3 fate would have happened if not for the time jump) in time to get treatment. Two future resistance fighters who are lovers, but were sent back separately at different points, compare notes and realize that their memories of what should be shared events differ, confirming that each new time travel mission alters the future to differing degrees - however, Judgment Day seems inevitable, though the time travelers keep managing to push it back a bit, so it's always looming but never actually arrives.
Terminator Genesys' whole plot depends on the time travel altering history - Kyle Reece arrives in 1984 to be confronted by a T-1000 waiting for him, only to be saved by Sarah Connor, who has been waiting for Kyle to arrive because when she was a kid a Terminator was sent back to guard and raise her as a soldier from childhood.
Terminator Dark Fate starts with John being killed as a kid by a new
Terminator between T2 and T3. Sarah survives to the modern day, using tech
to detect and destroy new Terminators almost as soon as they arrive.
Cyberdyne never caused Judgment Day, but another company now serves to
fill that role, and the newest Terminators are not related to the original
designs nor to the original version of Judgment Day, so it's a very
similar but strictly speaking different future apocalypse that is looming.
Malibu
published two series, Cybernetic Dawn which follows on from the T2 movie,
and Nuclear Twilight, which is set after Judgment Day but is effectively a
prequel to T2, since it shows how future John Connor gets hold off and
reprograms the good Terminator that he sends back to protect his
younger self.
Fwiw,
the Now version was pretty much all post Judgment Day, dealing with the
war with the machines, while Dark Horse mostly did miniseries about
other Terminators being sent on missions not directly involving the
Connors. The two Malibu series ran for four issues apiece, then finished
their stories in a flipbook, helpfully numbered as issue 0 - so the
reading order for both is #1, 2, 3, 4 and then 0.
Malibu was written with T2 very much in mind, but not any of the later movies. It could be in continuity with Terminator and T2 - in fact, it was intended to be - but it can't be in continuity with T3 (in the comics Sarah Connor is shown to be alive after Judgment Day, and several other survivors from the Cybernetic Dawn series shared their bunker to survive JD and be around in Nuclear Twilight, but in T3 Sarah died from cancer several years prior to JD, and John shared his bunker only with his future wife), nor with the Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series (where JD didn't happen in the 90s), maybe T4 (set after Judgment Day, long enough so that any Malibu characters could have been killed), nor Genesys nor Dark Fate (both explicitly in new timelines diverged from the original course of time).
