History:

(Night Nurse I#1 (fb) - BTS) <10 years before the main story> - When Marshall's father died, Marshall took over his failing business and built it into a success.

(Night Nurse I#1 (fb) - BTS) - The Board of Trustees at Metropolitan General Hospital in Manhattan repeatedly approached Marshall Michaels for years to donate money for a new hospital wing.

(Night Nurse I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Marshall had an emergency appendectomy and then recovered in Room 6-C at Metropolitan General Hospital.

Marshall had been buzzing for assistance for five minutes, but the student nurse on duty, Linda Carter, figured that since doctors rounds were coming up, she would focus on stocking supplies.

After being chastised by Nurse Brundage for allowing Mr. Michaels to wait as they didn't want him to complain or be unhappy, Linda went to check on him.

(Night Nurse I#1) - Linda greeted Marshall, apparently taken aback by his good looks, and asked what she could go for him, and he told her to take the ridiculous look off of her face and help him get onto his feet, as he had a dozen clients to call. While getting Marshall his robe, Linda advised him that his surgery had been very serious and that he needed to rest to heal. Although he initially replied, "Bankrupts need rest, I need work," Marshall found standing to be painful, and he accepted her instruction to lean on her, appreciating her beauty in the process.

(Night Nurse I#1 (fb) - BTS) - In the succeeding days, Linda continued to care for Marshall, and the two became progressively more attracted to each other.

(Night Nurse I#1) - As Linda brought him his lunch, he told her that he was feeling much better, especially around mealtimes. Later, as he was checking out, he told Linda that thanks to her, he almost hated to leave the hospital; he further noted that she had made him feel  feel like a person and not just a prospective donor to a new wing. He asked her to allow him to thank her soon and properly.

michaels-marshall-nn1-kiss(Night Nurse I#1 - BTS) - When Marshall called her apartment two days later, her roommate Georgia Jenkins answered the phone, and Linda feared that he was having medical problems.

(Night Nurse I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Marshall instead asked Linda out on a date.

(Night Nurse I#1) - Marshall picked Linda up by the hospital, complimenting her on how beautiful she looked in civilian garb. The date went well, and included at least a passionate kiss.

(Night Nurse I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Marshall and Linda began to fall in love, addressing each other as darling and dearest.

(Night Nurse I#1) - Marshall took Linda out on his yacht, and she loved the cool breeze while standing on the deck, although he warned her that she might fall in.

At a night out to dinner soon after, Marshall told Linda that he couldn't go any further in life without the girl he loved. He then told her he wanted her to give up nursing and marry him immediately. While Linda definitely wanted to marry him, she reminded him that graduation was only a few days away. He told her that he didn't want her to waste her life as a nurse when they could do so much more, but Linda asked him to give her a little time.

Ultimately, Marshall insisted that she had to give up nursing to be his wife, and that they could be married the next day in Buenos Aires, but they had to leave that night as he had an important business deal brewing in South America. Faced with that choice, Linda declined to go with Marshall, and he told her then it was goodbye for them, and he further told her that he hoped and prayed that she had made the right choice for both of them.

(Night Nurse I#1 - BTS) - Georgia and their other roommate and fellow nurse, Christine Palmer, consoled the tearful Linda.
