Sole, Revenant, Rolling
Thunder, Shockwave Riders (Farahd, Galadriel), Sketch,
Tullamore
Voge

Known Relatives: None known (though most Neo are
related)

with Bludgeon a lot)
Base of Operations: Bogan's underground complex,
Valle Soleada/Los Angeles, California;
formerly The Slash!,
Moscow, Russia;
formerly unrevealed
hidden city of the Neo, possibly South America or Alaska
First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men I#383 (August,
2000)
Powers/Abilities: Cudgel possessed superhuman
strength and durability, although the exact limits of either ability
were never established. He was large and powerful enough to wield an
oversized metal cudgel one-handed and strike with enough force to damage
heavy structural supports and gouge holes in solid ground. He could
coordinate his attacks with Bludgeon, the pair using their matching
weapons to batter opponents from different directions. Cudgel's
principal weapon was a massive metal club or mace. Cudgel was a seasoned
enforcer and close-quarters fighter.
Height: 6'4" (by approximation)
Weight: 260 lbs. (by approximation)
Eyes: Red
Hair: Unrevealed
History:
(Uncanny X-Men I#383 (fb) - BTS) - Cudgel and his Neo
allies Big Casino, Bludgeon, Manacle and Revenant accompanied Sole to
Moscow. There, he ran the exclusive nightclub The Slash! with Cudgel and
the others serving as the establishment's superhuman enforcers. The club
secretly doubled as a front for Sole's criminal dealings, including
Tullamore Voge's interdimensional slave trade. Among those caught in
Sole's orbit were the reality-altering mutant Sketch and Russian
intelligence officer Major Debra Levin.
(Uncanny X-Men I#383) - When Storm investigated Sole's
operations, Cudgel and the others attacked. After Manacle restrained the
X-Man on the roof of The Slash!, Bludgeon and Cudgel were ordered to
bring her down. They repeatedly smashed their giant war hammers into one
of the club's steel supports, collapsing the roof beneath Storm. The
pair confronted her, but proved no match for Storm's lightning bolts
that knocked both of them out. The fight continued until the X-Men
gained the upper hand, upon which the Neo Farahd used a transmat portal
to remove Cudgle, Sole, Big Casino, Bludgeon and Manacle from the scene.
(X-Treme X-Men I#40 (fb) - BTS) - Cudgel and his fellow
enforcers came under the employ of the malevolent psychic presence Elias
Bogan. He moved them to his base in Valle Soleada, California.
(X-Treme X-Men I#40) - Cudgel joined Bludgeon, Manacle, Revenant and
Rolling Thunder in an ambush on Bishop near the California coast. After
Rolling Thunder and Manacle softened Bishop up, Bludgeon and Cudgel
attacked together with their giant maces. Their combined blows knocked
Bishop through the surf and into Manacle's waiting restraints. Bishop
absorbed enough energy from the assault to break free and quickly
overwhelmed Bogan's thugs, but the fight had served its purpose: Bogan's
enslaved telepath Rachel Summers incapacitated Bishop, who was then
taken prisoner.
(X-Treme X-Men I#41) - At Bogan's hidden base, Bludgeon
and Cudgel entered Bishop's cell after the captive X-Man was drugged
with the mutant power-enhancer Rave. Stronger than ever and in a
drug-induced rage, Bishop easily disposed of both enforcers with a
single attack. His blast hurling them hard enough to leave them
plastered against opposite walls. Cudgel later joined Manacle, Bludgeon,
Revenant and Rolling Thunder in watching as Bogan prepared the
now-conditioned Bishop to attack his own teammates.
(X-Treme X-Men I#42) - Cudgel and Bludgeon ambushed Skids
at an abandoned coastal army fort near Valle Soleada. Both assumed the
slim, unarmed X-Man would be an easy target as they rushed her with
their clubs. However, their blows slid harmlessly off her force field.
Their own momentum sent the two Neo crashing into each other and drove
their weapons into the ground. Bludgeon fell into the hole and got
inadvertently knocked out when his own mace hit him on the head. Cudgel
was so distracted, he did not notice Sunspot sneaking up behind him.
Roberto Da Costa disarmed his opponent and used his weapon to beat him
into submission.
(X-Treme X-Men I#43) - Cudgel was among the forces Bogan
marshaled against Rogue and Shadowcat inside his underground complex.
However, Gambit only pretended to be under Bogan's control. He worked
from within to trip up most of the adversaries. Cudgel was taken out
when Gambit hit him with Bludgeon's weapon.
(X-Men: Giant-Size I#1 - BTS) - The Evolutionaries embarked on a
worldwide purge of the Neo, exterminating the race wherever they could
find them. Cudgel was among the Neo believed to have been killed during
the genocide.
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont, Adam Kubert, Tim Townsend
& Dan Panosian.
Possibly the best example of Claremont's early 2000s tendency to create
whole teams of villains who did little more than announce their name and
show off their powers. To make matters worse, he feels pretty
superfluous. Who needs Cudgel when you have Bludgeon... or vice versa?
Their names make the weapon terminology mildly confusing. In X-Treme
X-Men I#43 Gambit explicitly grabbed "Bludgeon's cudgel" and used
it to knock out Cudgel. Sometimes the jokes really do write themselves.
In their first appearance in Uncanny X-Men I#383, Bludgeon and
Cudgel had a noticeable size difference, which disappeared by the time
they returned in X-treme X-Men. In their debut, the clubs they
carried seemed to be enhanced with technology, though in later
appearances they looked like ordinary maces.
X-Men: Giant-Size I#1 established that the
Evolutionaries exterminated all Neo. Unlike Manacle, Cudgel has yet to
be resurrected from the dead... That is, if he and Bludgeon even
survived the destruction of Bogan's underground base.
