History:
(
The Saga of Crystar, Crystal Warrior#1 (fb) ) - Chaos was a demon lord who decided to conquer the world of Crystalium. To this end his hordes of minions and demon slaves invaded, but they were opposed by the land's mightiest warriors, led by that world's king. The resulting war ran for many years.

Eventually the Forces of Order sent the wizard Ogeode to assist the Crystalians against Chaos' forces.

(The Saga of Crystar, Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Ogeode's rival in the Forces of Chaos was also sent to Crystalium, though whether in response to Ogeode's arrival or he had already been present, remains unrevealed. He kept his presence a secret from the locals, acting behind the scenes.

(The Saga of Crystar, Crystal Warrior#1 (fb) ) - Though Crystalium's king was slain, Chaos and his forces were finally driven back by Ogeode using a prisma-crystal, though doing so drained most of Ogeode's power. As he fell Chaos cursed Crystalium, vowing that one day he would send another of his servants against them who would divide the planet against itself, setting friend against friend, brother against brother, and bring ruin to them all.

Only a few months later Chaos made true this promise, sending Zardeth back to Crystalium, where he drove a wedge between the late king's two sons, Crystar and Moltar, transforming the latter and his allies into Magma Men. In response Ogeode changed Crystar and his followers into crystal men, and a new conflict for the world began.

In Crystar the characters often mention the "Forces of Order" and "Forces of Chaos." As the first issue makes clear (but which seems largely overlooked in write-ups about Cystar and the characters therein), at least in the latter case the term "Forces of Chaos" doesn't mean "beings who ally themselves to the concept of Chaos" but "beings who serve an actual entity calling itself Chaos." This may well mean that Order is also an actual individual, not just a generic concept.

Though called a demon, based on the limited information that we have on Chaos it's feasible that was more an assumption on the part of the people of Crystalium than an accurate classification. He looks pretty monstrous and he commands hordes of diversely monstrous creatures, but the same could be said of (for example) Dormammu or Urthona, neither of whom are actually demonic. That said, in Crystar#8 Zardeth does also describe some of Chaos' minions as demons, and he's more likely to understand the differences between demon and just-demonic looking. Regardless, it's yet to be absolutely confirmed.

Similarly, he was depicted as a giant skull-like head with horns and tentacle-like arms ending in claws extending from same, but given it was in the context of a face in the sky observing battles this manifestation may have been a deliberately intimidating magical projection, like the Wizard of Oz's giant head, rather than an accurate version of his appearance.

Could this be another form of the abstract entity Lord Chaos, counterpart to Master Order? Conceivably, though probably not if this Chaos is actually a demon, since Lord Chaos isn't one. Also Lord Chaos doesn't seem to be the type to control hordes of anything (that would seem too orderly of him) or have the ambition to conquer anywhere.

Chaos is a fairly generic name to adopt, so just because others outside of Crystar issues claim to worship Chaos doesn't mean they follow this guy. But they might. In which case the likes of Morcar might also be affiliated to this character.

In theory Chaos is present BTS in every issue of Crystar, given the presence of his minions Zardeth, Moltar and the Magma Men. However, for this profile only the times he was actively present are being counted.

This profile was completed on 07/19/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Crystar.
