History:
(X-Men: Outback I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Through unrevealed
circumstances, Bushranger became the chosen protector of a community of
mutants who could not safely pass among humans. She used her powers to
sense their auras and track them down. Bushranger offered them a place
in Never Never, a refuge in the Australian outback hidden from humans by
the mutant Mirror Seer's mirage generating abilities.
(X-Men: Outback I#4 (fb) ) - Over time, Bushranger met and fell in love
with the unconventional looking mutant Buckland. She was very attracted
to his aura, which to her best represented what a gorgeous person he
was.
(X-Men: Outback I#4 (fb) ) - The Australian Morlocks
were targeted by the Lava Men after their leader King Bassalo was led to
believe that harvesting and refining mutant genes would strengthen them
considerably. The Lava Men managed to bypass the mirages protecting
Never Never by tunneling into the refuge from beneath the surface. They
abducted the community and brought the captives to King Basallo's
underground kingdom.
(X-Men: Outback I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Bushranger was the only member of the
Morlocks who managed to escape, though she was killed in the process.
However, her mutant powers quickly resurrected her and she continued to
make her way to the surface in a desperate attempt to get help. She
sensed the auras of multiple strong mutants deep in the outback and
decided to walk towards their light.
(X-Men: Outback I#4) - After walking for most of the night, Bushranger
located the X-Men's secret base near Cooterman's Creek. She first ran
into Wolverine who tried to deny he was an X-Man, but when she revealed
her mutant power to see auras, he quickly gave up the ruse. After
sharing her story, the X-Men were convinced to help out. Bushranger told
them she would take care of king Basallo herself, asking the X-Men and
their associate
Madelyne Pryor to mainly focus on his army. Bushranger led the team to
Never Never where the mutants marveled at its beauty and sophistication.
(X-Men: Outback I#4 - BTS) - Bushranger guided her allies through the
Lava Men's tunnel straight into their domain.
(X-Men: Outback I#4) - There, they soon ran into Basallo
and his forces who were delighted that Bushranger had returned with more
mutants for them to enslave. However, the X-Men proved more than a match
for the Lava Men. Bushranger remained true to her word and took on
Basallo single-handedly. She trusted her regenerative abilities to
handle the burns she suffered from touching his scorching form.
Bushranger was so determined to defeat the Lava Men's king that she even
allowed Havok to take a blast intended for her. Bushranger gained the
definitive upperhand when Storm discovered that the molten ore in the
Lava Men's bodies was highly conductive. The leader of the X-Men
threatened to strike all of them with unprecedented electrical force.
Unwilling to sacrifice his people, Basallo ordered his forces to stand
down and release the mutants.
(X-Men: Outback I#4) - While they were waiting for the mutants to
arrive, Bushranger had a heart to heart with Havok and Madelyne Pryor,
who believed Bushranger had acted callously letting Havok get shot. She
assured Pryor that she could tell from his aura that he was going to be
fine the second it happened. Pryor then accused her of secretly having
the hots for her fellow X-Man, but that theory was quickly torpedoed
when Buckland showed up to greet her. The happy couple kissed and
hugged, leaving the X-Men perplexed at this unconventional couple, but
Bushranger assured them her lover had a gorgeous aura. The rescued
community returned to Never Never and Bushranger and the others promised
to keep the X-Men's continued survival secret.
Comments: Created by Steve Orlando, Roi Mercado.
X-Men: Outback I#4 is set during the X-Men's time
in Australia, before the events of Inferno. It's hard to tell if
Bushranger or any of the other Australian Morlocks are still around
after all this time, especially given the myriad M-Day style extinction
events that have occurred since then.
In a way, she's that group's Caliban and Callisto in one: a mutant
leader who can also track mutants and happens to be immortal as long as
someone still believes in her. Now, that's a nifty, versatile powerset
if ever there was one. It'd be interesting to find out why someone as
conventionally pretty as Bushranger decided to leave society to spend
her life with a group of misfits. Then again, if she truly only judges
others by their aura, it doesn't matter what they look like, eh?
